Obituary Preview: Gregory “Greg” Thomas Puckett, 67, of Salem passed away on Thursday, May 16, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dodge Puckett, Jr. and Mary Hylton Puckett, and his beloved dog, Buster. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 44 years, Charlotte E. Greg was a 1975 graduate of Glenvar High School in Salem. He retired from his most recent Salem businesses, West Salem Tactical and Salem Custom Cabinets. He taught water aerobics classes at Green Ridge Recreation Center and Lancerlot Sports Complex. He was the creator of Greg’s Beer Reviews on YouTube where he opened each review with, “Let’s see what's in the fridge today.” He enjoyed tasting craft beers and giving his honest, informative, and humorous opinions about the beers. He started crafting beer in his home and then moved on to paid reviews of craft beers and IPAs sent to him. Greg also enjoyed preparing delicious meals and sharing his meals and tips for successful cooking with his friends on social media. He enjoyed life to the fullest and rarely met a stranger. Greg’s laughter and sparkling blue eyes would light up the room. He will be missed by his fans, friends, and students.
Greg was also a motorcycle enthusiast. He enjoyed many motorcycle adventures and always looked forward to his next ride with his MC friends. He traveled all over the United States including one 6-week trip across the country. During Greg’s lengthy hospital stay, his closest Salem friends honored him with a motorcycle ride-by which also included a beer taste and review from his hospital bed. The family would like to thank Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for honoring Greg and his friends and allowing this special afternoon on the patio. The family would also like to thank the 9th-floor Neuro Trauma ICU and 10th-floor Palliative Care Unit and the wonderful nurses, doctors, and other professionals who lovingly cared for Greg.

He loved woodworking, running his own sawmill, using “old interesting tools,” and building projects. He enjoyed history, traveling, camping, collecting old books, and studying genealogy. He was an accomplished musician—building and playing his own instruments. He played guitar, dobro, banjo, auto-harp, mandolin, fiddle, dulcimer, organ, piano, harmonica, jaw harp, harpsichord, and even spoons and a hand saw. As a child, he was a champion checkers player and loved playing in the woods with his brothers, especially with wooden wagons and wild animals, including skunks. His career included serving in the US Air Force, installing and repairing elevators for the Otis Elevator Company, and working in electronics testing for 30 years at General Electric in Salem. After retirement, he volunteered at the Johnson Farm on the Blue Ridge Parkway, mastering an “ole timey accent.” He purchased a sawmill, sharing his hobby, humor, and kindness through sawing logs. He made many buildings and furniture with his sons and others throughout the community. He even disassembled, moved, and rebuilt an old cabin. Many folks knew him as “the sawmill man.”
He loved his family, spending many hours researching genealogy and hosting family reunions. He loved taking family vacations. Yet, “for his vacation dollar, he couldn’t beat Colonial Williamsburg.” He and Judy went there for their honeymoon, took many family trips there, and returned for their 40th anniversary.
Russell never met a stranger—he always was the kindest to cashiers, baggers, servers, and tour guides since he was just “naturally curious.” There was never a dumb question. He was Walmart’s most underpaid greeter.

In her home, she co-hosted with her husband a monthly Bible Study titled God At The Movies. She also took part in Bible Study programs and film showings at the Richfield Retirement Community. She was pleased to be considered, with her husband Fred, as an intercessory missionary in visiting and helping their son and family when they served as missionaries in Spain.
Her daughter Carol Lyn Eichelman Webster is an award-winning drama and English teacher at William Byrd H. S. in Roanoke County, and her husband Buddy Webster is employed by Fuji. Her son Fred and wife Mary Kay Eichelman are home missionaries who work with international students at Virginia Tech and State University.
