He drove truck for Shook Asphalt for many years and was a talented mechanic. Pops could build just about anything out of nothing! He lived his life on the edge; enjoying motorcycles and dirt track racing, and even found time for salmon fishing. Carpenter, age 75, of Sheridan, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, June 17, 2022, passing away at her home under the loving care of her family and Kindred Hospice.Marilyn is the wife of Rev. Robert Carpenter, pastor's wife to the Sheridan Church of God. She has been very involved at the church serving in a number of various roles. Marilyn has also enjoyed volunteering at the Montcalm County Commission on Aging, where one of her favorite jobs was driving people to events and appointments. She also worked as a Census Taker for several years and liked visiting people as she collected their information. However, next to Marilyn’s love for Jesus, her favorite thing was her family and she cherished every moment spent with them. She loved knitting and crocheting things for them, going to their sporting events, listening to their band and choir concerts, and attending all their other activities. Marilyn was a wonderful wife, loving mother, and the best grandma of all times and she will be dearly missed.Surviving Marilyn is her husband of 56 years, Rev. (Apps) VanderMey. Carolyn graduated from Sheridan Rural Agriculture High School in 1958. She married Marco J. Wolschon on January 20, 1968. Together they raised two daughters.Carolyn enjoyed flea markets, traveling, camping, and many other activities with her husband and girls when she was younger. In her later years she liked working on crosswords and sudoku puzzles. Carolyn worked for 20 years at two lumber yards as a bookkeeper and she retired after 20 from the Post Office.After her retirement she enjoyed spending time between Michigan and Georgia. Obituary Preview: Michael Eugene (Duke) Peiffer passed away on Monday, May 30, 2022, following a long battle with cancer at Medilodge of Monroe. Duke was born on January 21, 1946 to Gene and Colleen (Miller) Peiffer. He married Patti Fishell on March 17, 1973, at her home, during a blizzard. She survives him. Also, surviving him are his sons Wm. Layth (Irina) of Charleston, South Carolina, and Mat (Ashley) of Carleton. He was the eldest of 6 children and all of his siblings survive him; Pat (Joyce) of Acme, Tim (Jean) of Skandia, Kathy (Mike) Foley of Manistee, Karen Peiffer of Manistee, and Craig Peiffer of Dundee. Also surviving Duke are many nieces and nephews, and his Butler family cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, Luke, and niece Drew Foley.Mike served his country in the DMZ in Korea, during the Vietnam Conflict, facing combat and surveillance missions. The V.A. recognized that his service caused the cancer that took him. Mike worked as an electric lineman for Consumers, providing essential services, for over 35 years, always making sure Senator Road was with power. After he retired, mom and dad got a generator. He also had several business ventures: Suns Comic and Collectibles in Greenville, The General Store in Carson City, and the infamous garbage route with Terry P.Mike was a family man, a great provider and excellent father. After his first field trip with the kindergarten class, he was on the couch with a wet cloth on his head, muttering, “They don’t listen, they don’t listen, they don’t……..”He was a member of the American Legion in Carson City and the VFW post in Sheridan. Mike will be remembered for his work ethic, his dedication to those he loved, (including those softball girls), and his great sense of humor. The first visitation for Duke will be on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 from 5 - 8 PM at the Simpson Family Funeral Home in Sheridan (246 S. Main St.). She will be deeply missed by all that knew her. Joyce spoke of her time on the family farm and how life was then, the blessings and hardships. They had their hard times but it made them stronger. She spoke fondly about her father telling both her and her sister to stay at school until he could come with sled to bring them home in the winter snow. The family moved into Vestaburg where she continued her schooling and played on the school’s women’s basketball team and, as it turned out, her coach was her future sister-in-law.Joyce met and dated James Stauffer. They eloped and were married on April 11, 1952. They moved many times throughout the course of their marriage. Joyce and her husband helped run the family restaurant, “The Shack”, with James’ family at Rock Lake. They finally settled in for good in Kentwood, Michigan in 1962. In 1970 she began working as the librarian at Bowen Elementary School where she was loved by all students and staff. After the school day was done, she taught knitting and crocheting to students. She retired after 26 years and she loved every minute of it. She was an excellent seamstress as she made her daughters outfits for holidays and special events. She was always there to help others in any way she could. There were overnights, making Christmas cookies and gingerbread houses, and trips to Florida.She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and those she has touched during her time here on earth. In honoring Joyce’s wishes, no formal funeral ceremony will be held and a private committal service will be held at a later time.
