Obituary Preview: WINSTON-SALEM –  Sherry C. Penn-Lane, 59 went to rejoice with her Heavenly Father on April 22nd, 2022 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with her dearest loved ones by her side. She was born on June 30, 1962 in Forsyth County to the late Luther Samuel Cecil and Lorraine Long Cecil.
Sherry dedicated most of her life to assisting and improving the lives of others through her cleaning service which all began with the Bess Family at the age of 18 taking care of two little girls that remained near and dear to her heart, Lauren & Alicia. She was a lover of all animals, cats being her favorite. During season, you would find her browsing the yard sales on weekends as she enjoyed shopping for unique finds, especially jewelry. The simple pleasures in life brought great joy to Sherry. She loved a nice night around the fire pit with family and friends, listening to a variety of good music and most recently the vacations to the beach and mountains she took with Lauren and her daughter Haley. One of her proudest moments was the day her son Shane was married to his lovely wife Sarah. She embraced the quality time she had to share with both him and her beloved husband Adrian Lane of nearly 13 years.
Sherry was a member of Pleasant Fork Church in Winston-Salem and was always very open with her beliefs and trust in our Lord and Savior. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Grandma Long and Grandma Cecil. Wall adopted by heart, best friends Melody and David Brown as well as several special aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other dear friends.
Visitation with the family will be held from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at Hayworth Miller Silas Creek Chapel in Winston-Salem on Wednesday, April 27th followed by a Celebration of Life in the Chapel beginning at 2:00pm with Dr. Joe Long and David Brown officiating. Emily Shaffner Burge - December 21, 1931 - April 22, 2022

Departed: 04/22/2022 (Winston-Salem)
Obituary Preview: Emily Shaffner Burge, 90, of Winston-Salem entered into the more immediate presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 22, 2022. She was born in Conway, South Carolina on December 21, 1931, to Frank A. Shaffner (Frot) and Lella Burroughs Shaffner. Emily moved to Winston-Salem shortly after birth with her family. She was a graduate of Reynolds High School and attended North Carolina Women’s College in Greensboro, NC (currently UNCG). She was married to John Kenneth Burge on August 11, 1951 and remained so for 65 years until his passing in 2017. She was devoted to her Lord, husband and children.
Her first employment after college was at Western Electric in an Administrative position. She also worked during the early years of her marriage with her husband at Floyd S. Burge Construction Company, until the birth of her first child. She was a stay-at-home mom until both of her children were in school, then she began to work part-time again with her husband.
Emily loved Winston-Salem with its history and proximity to a variety of travel destinations, namely the North Carolina mountains and South Carolina beaches. She loved to read her bible, dance, sing, play the piano, garden, sew and cook for her family. She also loved little children and held a special place in her heart for them.
She was very active in her personal relation with the Lord in numerous ways over the years: as a member of the choir; teaching Sunday School for children and young teen girls; assisting with special church service preparations; visiting the sick and shut-ins; giving the elderly rides to church; calling church members to sing Happy Birthday to them; and most importantly, she would go on door-to-door Evangelism calls with other ladies. She also went with her brother Don for in-home visits and Bible studies, which held a special joy for her.
Emily was also active in numerous civic and political activities, especially in the late 1950’s through 1965. She was a member of the Women’s Winston-Salem and Forsyth County Civil Defense Council, serving in such rolls as Secretary and Vice Chair. She also served a term as the Civil Defense Chair representing Sherwood Forest Elementary School. She volunteered a lot of time campaigning and working the polls for Conservative candidates, and served in 1964 as a Forsyth County GOP delegate. She helped others in their efforts to vote by providing transportation and baby-sitting services. She believed, and taught her children, that voting was a privilege and honor that was not to be taken lightly.
She was preceded in death, by her parents; husband; sister, Gretchen Hauser and her son-in-law, Richard Disher. Surviving is her brother, Donald F. Shaffner and wife Martha of Winston-Salem; daughter, Sandra Burge Disher of East Bend; son, Wayne Douglas Burge and wife Tammy of Winston-Salem; grandson Ryan Hamilton Burge and wife Danielle of Longview, Texas; soon to be great-grandson Weston Jack Burge of Longview, Texas; sister-in-law, JoAnn Long of Birmingham, Alabama; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Those of us who remain will miss her, but we rejoice that she is with her Savior and those who have gone home before her.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:30 pm on Friday, April 29, 2022, at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem with a Celebration of Life service at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park located at 2730 Peters Creek Parkway in Winston-Salem.
The family would like to extend their heart-felt gratitude to Emily’s wonderful caregivers at Salemtowne Westerly Place Memory Care, Salemtowne Garden Court Skilled Care and Forsyth Memorial Hospital’s Palliative Care unit.

Barbara "Bobbie" Hall - October 06, 1927 - April 14, 2022

Departed: 04/14/2022 (Winston-Salem)
Obituary Preview: Barbara "Bobbie" Alley Hall was born on October 6, 1927, in Rockingham County to Augustus Wesley Alley and Ollie Mae Moore Alley, the youngest of seven children. She was predeceased by her husband, Marvin Lee "Tink" Hall, her son William Brent Hall, her brothers, Thomas and A.W., and her sisters, Lula Carter, Frances Ingram, Elizabeth Flynn, and Helen Dula. She is survived by her daughters Pamela Pogue (Thomas), Melissa Aldridge (Gary), Bridget Cella (Stephen), Barbara Gordon (Greg), and her 'nother daughter, Ann Hall. She was the proudest grandmother and great-grandmother to 28, including Brittany Haun (David), Brad Pogue (Amber), Lauren Biek (Aaron), Zach Aldridge (Kim), Meri Wessels (Drew), Daniel Aldridge (Amber), Sam Aldridge (Jessika), Katheryn Woodruff (Kyle), Halley Erickson (Will), Alex Shefferly (Kevin), Charlie Gordon, and Greta Gordon, and sixteen great-grandchildren.  Bobbie greeted each day of her 94 amazing years with a combination of fierce independence and generous love and warmth. A member of the Greatest Generation, she grew up in Rockingham County and Winston-Salem, enjoying outdoor pursuits as a self-described tomboy in her youth – and sharing many fond memories with her six siblings. She met the love of her life, "Tink" Hall, at Hanes High School (both class of 1944), and they shared a beautiful life together for 36 years until his death. She was even a member of the Hanes High City Championship Basketball Team and was always proud that they beat cross-town rival, R.J. Reynolds. A member of Ardmore Baptist Church since 1954, she was a faithful Christian and churchgoer, logging thousands of hours in weekly Sunday School, YAH (Young At Heart), and Handicrafter meetings, producing hundreds of pillows and handwarmers for cancer and cardiology patients. Her sewing prowess was demonstrated through meticulously produced homemade dresses (so much better than store bought!) and baby quilts for every grandchild and great-grandchild. In addition, her meals were legendary – and she was a pro at feeding crowds of up to 50 with favorite dishes such as spaghetti and Moravian chicken pie.  Bobbie was our walking miracle, having survived numerous health challenges over the last 25 years. Her family is grateful for every extra day we got to give her back just some of the love she so generously offered us each day.  A celebration of life will be held at Ardmore Baptist Church on Saturday, April 16, 2022, at 1:00 p.m. If you would like to make a memorial donation, please direct it to the Special Ministries Fund of Ardmore Baptist Church (c/o Ardmore Baptist Church, 501 Miller Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27103).  Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family of Mrs. Hall.

Montie "Grizz" Lee Hamby - September 04, 1950 - April 01, 2022

Departed: 04/01/2022 (Winston-Salem)
Obituary Preview: Montie Lee Hamby (a.k.a. Grizz), left this earth for his heavenly home suddenly on April 1, 2022, at his residence in Winston-Salem, NC.
Montie was born in Welch, West Virginia, in September of 1950 to Albert Lee Hamby and Shirley Jean Deskins Hamby.  He is survived by his wife, Diana Perkinson of Winston-Salem; his daughter and granddaughters, Erika Hamby, Rhyse, and Mckai Keene of Wilkesboro; daughter, Rachel Hamby of Wilkesboro; sister, Debra Thomas (Jeff) of Creedmoor; nephew Chan Welborn (Michelle) and their children Katie and Cole of Wake Forest; and Dolores, former spouse, of Wilkesboro.  Montie was retired from Forsyth County Schools where he kept the playgrounds safe.  Other work involvements included: Migrant and Seasonal Farm Workers, Wilkes Senior Center, Watauga Youth Network, Wilkes County Parks and Recreation, and Senior activities at Salemtowne Life Plan Community.
He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and community.  Montie was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He lived his life with joy collecting good stories along the way. He was quick with a joke, a quip, to hum a tune and to let out a laugh. He also had a rare depth of spirit, artistry, and sincerity behind his sparkling blue eyes and clever grin. He had a story for any occasion and was a lover of good conversation.  His passion about topics led to many spirited discussions, all of which he was, of course, the winner. He was a true artisan and enjoyed making and teaching pottery, basket-weaving, flute-making, drawing and painting, handmade longbows and strip canoes, and anything else he set his mind to.  He was proud of his Cherokee heritage and incorporated native influences in his art. He played guitar and harmonica and enjoyed music from bluegrass to Jimmy Buffett, to opera. He was an accomplished marksman and held 1st place in many pistol and revolver matches in NC.
He truly enjoyed learning and sharing what he learned with friends and strangers alike.  He had a deep appreciation for nature; often pausing mid step to admire a wild-flower or to catch a glimpse of a hawk perched on a line. He loved to identify plants, trees, and birds. He had a passion for animals and served several terms on the board of Animal Adoption and Rescue Foundation, as well as fostering dogs and cats for them.  He was never without dogs, cats, or fish in the home. Although he loved to fish, in his later years he liked to say he practiced pre-release, pointing to the fish, and saying, “I could have had you!”, a testament to his wry sense of humor.
Montie was particularly dawn to the rivers and forests of North Carolina and was a fierce advocate for them.  He was a founder of the Yadkin Pee-Dee River Trail Association and Yadkin Riverkeeper program and served on the boards of both organizations, as well as serving on the board of Clean Water for North Carolina.  For 35 years, he organized cleanups along the Yadkin. He spent countless hours clearing brush and building trails for Mountains to the Sea Trail, Over-Mountain Victory Trail, and the Appalachian Trail.  He was blessed to paddle, hike, backpack and pick up trash along countless miles of these trails and various others throughout his life.
It is in these earthly places, Montie’s spirit will still be felt as well as in the minds and hearts of all that knew and loved him, until we see him again.
In keeping with Montie’s wishes, memorial services will be simple and private. For those wishing to honor his life, memorials may be made in his name to Yadkin Riverkeeper or Yadkin River Greenway.
