Aaltje (Ali) Doesburg Laninga - December 23, 1949 - October 22, 2021

Departed: 10/22/2021 (Bellingham)
Obituary Preview: Ali passed to her heavenly home Friday, October 22, 2021 after an 11 month battle with ALS.  The oldest of 4 siblings, she was born in the Netherlands on December 23, 1949 to Geert and Jantina Doesburg and immigrated to the U.S. with her family in 1958.  Initially settling in Everett, WA, the family soon moved to Mount Vernon, WA where Ali's father had purchased City Bakery.  As a teenager Ali was soon employed at the bakery. Tragedy struck in January, 1965, when her father passed at age 47, leaving her mother to run the bakery and raise four children.  Being the oldest meant assuming many household duties at age 15. Christian education was important to the family so Ali and other high school aged youth from Mount Vernon car-pooled to Lynden to attend Lynden Christian High as sophomores in 1965.  Throughout her school years, Ali sang in choirs.  In elementary school she was part of the Mount Vernon Christian Choraliers – a singing group that gave performances throughout the state.  In high school she again participated in choir.  If she had to stay after school for an evening performance, she needed to find a place to have dinner.  Having become friends with the Klaas Laninga family of Lynden soon after their arrival in 1958, she often found a place at their dinner table.  And that's how she met Herman.  Before long they started dating and on July 29, 1969 they were married and made Bellingham, WA their home.
Ali was soon employed at Smith's Bakery when the owner learned she was a baker's daughter and knew her way around a bakery. She became a stay-at-home mom when her three children were born. Once the children were all in school she re-entered the work force. She served as receptionist for 10 years at the Bethany Christian Services adoption agency. After that she was employed in various medical offices, ending her career at Peace Health's Center for Senior Health. Ali continued to find joy in singing. She joined the Whatcom Chorale in 1974 and sang until the Covid-19 Pandemic forced the group to stop in 2020.  Ali was an active and giving person.  Besides her involvement at Hope In Christ Church on Praise Teams and choirs, she also served as a Sunday School teacher and a Deacon.  She volunteered for many years at the Bellingham Food Bank, helped serve at the annual Lighthouse Mission Thanksgiving dinner and served the homeless at the annual Project Connect day at Bellingham High. She also coordinated her church's involvement in Family Promise, an Interfaith Program designed to get families off the street and into housing and jobs. Ali is survived by Herman, her husband of 52 years, daughters Tamara Laninga (husband Pat Gillham) of Bellingham, Geralyn Cunningham (husband Michael) of Telkwa, B.C., and son Matthew Laninga of Bellingham.  She adored her nine grandchildren: Josiah, Abigail, Bethany, Aleya, Emma, Nate and Zander Cunningham and Skyer and Jonna Gillham. She will be greatly missed!
A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, November 27 at 2:00 PM at Hope In Christ Church, 710 E. Sunset Drive, Bellingham, WA 98225.  Gifts in her name are suggested to Bellingham Food Bank, Interfaith Coalition/Family Promise or Hospice House of Whatcom County. The service will be broadcast live: https://www.facebook.com/Hope-in-Christ-Church-1674436286145769

Louise Adele Sygitowicz - February 16, 1946 - October 20, 2021

Departed: 10/20/2021 (Bellingham)
Obituary Preview: Louise Sygitowicz, age 75, of Bellingham, WA, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at home Wednesday, October 20, 2021, after a brief battle with melanoma (skin cancer).
Born in Butte, MT to Mel and Sarah ("Sally") Bremer in 1946, Louise spent her early years in Sturgis, SD until the family moved to Whatcom County where she spent the rest of her life. After they graduated from Mount Baker High School, she married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Bill Sygitowicz. They were married over 56 years and had two children, Dan and Mikyn.
Louise made friends wherever she went. Working for decades at Georgia-Pacific resulted in a beloved community of friends who remained close to her until her death. Raised as a Lutheran pastor's kid, she and Bill later became members of First Presbyterian Church in Bellingham, another network of dear friends. Neighbors on Academy hill were an extended family, and Louise's calendar was always full of gatherings with those she loved. (Did we mention she loved people?) Louise was one of those unique people who upon entering a room made it better for everyone.
Louise was a playful, loving, and dedicated mom to her children, and was devoted to her three cherished grandchildren. Faith, family, and friends were central to Louise, and she delighted in all those around her. Louise took joy in creativity and relationships, and when she wasn’t filling her home with laughter and parties, she could be found in her craft room working on a new project or more likely at a coffee shop with friends. As she said after her own mother's death, "She is dancing with Jesus now." We will miss her greatly.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Bill, her sister Carolyn Julin, her children Dan (Kelly) and Mikyn; her grandchildren Carson, Chloe, and Ashby; and her many much-loved cousins, nieces and nephew.

Departed: 10/18/2021 (Bellingham)
Obituary Preview: Ralph Milford “Mel” Winsor
Our beloved dad, brother, grandpa, uncle and friend passed away on October 18, 2021, in Bellingham, Washington. Mel was born in Red Bluff, California, on April 12, 1949. He was the son of William (Pop) and Jeanne Zuleger. He is preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. He also leaves behind his former wife, Sharlene, who remained his good friend until the very end.
Mel was a live wire. He loved a good party, good tequila, and family gatherings. Mel looked forward to traveling the National Parks and a road trip to Maryland to visit one of his daughters. He was able to spend several months with his youngest daughter in Hawaii over the last couple of years, soaking up all the rays of sunshine he could.
Mel grew up as an Explorer Scout, rebuilding and racing a car. He went through carpet apprentice training along with his stepbrother Bruce and best friend, Matt. Mel owned his own business on Orcas Island for 20 years. During his time on Orcas Island, he became a member of the American Legion, filling many leadership roles. Mel continued his volunteer service once a month for the American Legion pancake breakfast; he was famous for his Mickey Mouse pancakes. Mel volunteered for the Army at the age of 17, where he earned a Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam.
Mel worked hard all his life. Pop always had "projects" waiting for him on each visit to his parents' house, in either California or Mexico. As a result, he had many long-lasting friendships spanning from Washington to Mexico. He was an excellent cribbage and pool player, some games getting quite loud but always fun and lively.
Mel fought hard; he was often referred to as the man with 9-lives. Yet, he maintained his positive outlook on life and continued to wear his infectious smile up until the very end. We could all learn from him and the joy he had for life.
A Celebration of Life will be held next spring at the American Legion on Orcas Island.

He traveled all over to see his own kids and grandchildren perform at their peak in their given sport. He was an original DIYer who took pride in his quality wood working making many furniture pieces. He was quite the handyman and volunteered his talents to many of our fortunate neighbors who found themselves in need of a solid fix. Books were our Frank’s lifetime companion as he loved a good novel or biography.
He was a graduate of Washington State University in 1970 where he majored in Accounting and maintained his AICPA membership throughout his long tenure in Agricultural Business working for Western Farmers in Seattle, WA, Farm Credit Services in Spokane, WA, and Farmland, in Kansas City, MO. After a distinguished 50-year career he retired from Madera Fresno Farm Credit out of Fresno, CA in 2019 as the Chief Risk Officer. His work ethic was unequaled, and it’s been said that his contributions will have a real impact on the future of the company in positive ways.
A Celebration of Life has been scheduled for March 26, 2022, at the Squalicum Boathouse in Bellingham, WA, time to be determined.  A donation in Frank’s name can be made to your choice of organizations but the family does suggest the Whatcom Hospice Foundation or the Friends of the Big Fresno Fair.  Frank worked passionately to support 4-H & FFA youth programs.  At the fair, Frank enjoyed cooking breakfast for hundreds of kids as well as selflessly working to provide tools and toolboxes to ag-focused youth.  Friends of the Big Fresno Fair Attn: Toolbox/Junior Livestock Program, 1121 S. Chance Ave, Fresno, California 93702.
