Obituary Preview: John L. Muhoberac, 75, of Mount Joy, passed away on Monday, April 26, 2021 at his residence. Born in Evansville, IN, he was the son of the late Lawrence G. and Marnesse (Addy) Muhoberac. John was the husband of Marion (D’Oriocourt) Muhoberac with whom he celebrated 55 years of marriage this past November 5th.
John retired from Parkview Baptist High School as a teacher. John was an athlete and loved to play, coach, and watch football and baseball. He coached football while working at Parkview Baptist High School. A history teacher, John loved American history.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Marion, are two children, Ruthlynn Savoy, wife of Alan of Summersville, MO and Jon Muhoberac, husband of Joanne Conway of Dumfries, VA; two grandchildren; and a sister, Anita Fenner, wife of the late Pete of New Orleans, LA.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Lawrence Muhoberac.
Services will be private.

Kay A. Hamilton - November 12, 1933 - April 25, 2021

Obituary Preview: Kay A. Hamilton, 87, formerly of Maytown, passed away on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in York, she was the daughter of the late Kermit W. and Anna M. (Smith) Houser. Kay was the wife of Paul Hamilton Jr. with whom she celebrated 70 years of marriage this past February 24th.
Kay retired from Gimbels department store in Park City Center in 1991. She was a partner at LCBC church in Manheim where she attend for 13 years. Kay loved flower gardening, cooking, and being with her family. She enjoyed spending time at the beach, and was able to enjoy 26 Winters at her beach home in Boynton Beach, FL.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Paul Jr., are three children, Michael Hamilton, husband of Patirica (Kauffman) of Mount Joy, Randy Hamilton, husband of Deborah (Smith) of Lititz, and Sue Ann Lively, wife of the late Robert of Maytown; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and a sister, Donna Ernst of York.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Sandra Luckenbaugh.

Ralph H. Engle Jr. - June 04, 1937 - April 23, 2021

Obituary Preview: Ralph H. Engle, Jr. 83, of Mount Joy passed away on April 23, 2021.  He was the son of the late Ralph H. Sr., and Pearl M. Wolfersberger Engle.   He is survived by his sister Romaine L. Edwards of Mount Joy.
A proud veteran, Ralph enlisted in the US Navy and achieved the rank of  Machinist Mate 2nd Class (MM2) after graduating from Hummelstown High School in 1955.  He was employed by PennDot Engineering, District 8 Harrisburg as a project engineer where he retired.  An articulate and experienced woodworker, Ralph crafted wooden dump trucks, backhoes, and other construction equipment as wooden toys.
In keeping with Ralph’s wishes, there will be no services.  He was interred with his parents in Hummelstown Cemetery.  If desired, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice and Community Care, PO Box 4025, Lancaster PA 17604.

Obituary Preview: Jimmie L. Houser, 78, of Elizabethtown, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2021 at Hospice and Community Care, Mount Joy. Born in Lebanon, he was the son of the late Herman and Irene (Lambert) Houser. Jimmie was the husband of Dorothy L. (Shupe) Houser with whom he celebrated 33 years of marriage this past August.
Jimmie retired from the Horst Group working in maintenance. He was a one of kind. Jimmie played in the band The Camaro’s as well as several other bands. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching movies. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Dorothy, are three children, Dawn Hurd of Elizabethtown, Troy Houser, husband of Lorrie of Lititz, and Paul Hurd, husband of Jennifer of Palmyra; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and a brother, Randall Houser, husband of Rebecca of New Holland.

Dorothy M. Allen - October 09, 1944 - April 19, 2021

Obituary Preview: Dorothy M. Allen, 76, of Mount Joy, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2021 at Susquehanna Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Esther (Ney) Shirk. Dorothy was the wife of the late David L. Allen who passed away on September 5, 2004.
Dorothy was a graduate of Donegal High School class of 1964. She was a member of St. Marks United Methodist Church in Mount Joy.  Until recently she was an active member of the church choir and loved listening to music and watching old movies.  She enjoyed spending time with friends at church events and playing bingo at the Elizabethtown Area Senior Center.  To her time well spent meant spending it with family.  She was particularly fond of “running around” with her sister Pauline to shop and talk about life.  Friday evenings were not complete if they didn’t include a trip out to eat with her son’s family, followed by browsing at a local bookstore for a good story to read.
In her younger years, Dorothy enjoyed taking family vacations to the seashore, which supplied many fond memories.  As a mother, she gave all of herself to raising her children – Todd & Amanda.  She cherished every moment she could get with her grandkids.  To her, family was the most important thing about life – family was life.
Dorothy is survived by two children, Todd Allen, husband of Kelly of Mount Joy and Amanda Reed, wife of Jeffrey of Lancaster; two grandchildren, Amara Reed and Jayden Allen; and a sister, Pauline Johns, wife of Charles of Maytown.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, John Paul, James R., Charles R. “Bob”, and George R. “Dick” Shirk; and two sisters, Helen Broucht and Jean Weaver.

Leonard with whom she celebrated 52 years of marriage this past December 28th.
Loretta cherished the time she spent with her family. She gave her life to being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Loretta was an active member of West Green Tree Church of the Brethren. She enjoyed writing,  blogging and gardening.
Surviving in addition to her husband, Terry, are four sons, David Leonard of Atlanta, GA, Steven Leonard, husband of Melissa of Jackson, TN, Jason Leonard, husband of Holly of Mount Joy, and Brian Leonard, husband of Joi of Little Rock, AR. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Fay Martin Kirkpatrick of Columbia and the late James R. Heck Sr. James was the companion of Juanita Stone of Middletown.      James was a graduate of Elizabethtown Area High School class of 1988. He coached and umpired baseball and coached football for the Elizabethtown Boys Club. James was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and played on the church softball team. He enjoyed playing airsoft and spending time with his family and friends. Surviving in addition to his mother, Fay and companion Juanita, are two children, Christopher James “CJ” Heck of Marietta and Tierra Harbaugh, wife of Brandon of Bainbridge; three grandchildren, Kenna and Tristan Harbaugh and Myla Heck; a sister, Cathy Will of OH; and two brothers, Dorian Glunt of East Waterford, PA and Rory Glunt, husband of Ruth of Lititz.      He was preceded in death by a daughter, Trista Leigh Heck.       A memorial service honoring James life will be held at Mount Calvary Church, 625 N, Holly St, Elizabethtown, PA 17022 on Thursday, April 15, 2021 at 6 PM. Interment will be private at Mount Tunnel Cemetery.

Born in Lancaster, she was the daughter of the late Jay and Evelyn (Washstetter) Koser. Shirley was the wife of the late Lawrence P. Sears who passed away on November 3, 2014.
Shirley retired from Kellogg’s. Previously she worked at various restaurants as a waitress. After her retirement, Shirley volunteered at Landisville Elementary School in the art department. The time she spent working with the children was very special to her. She also volunteered at the Longs Park Art Festival. Shirley enjoyed traveling and especially making trips to her vacation home in Rehoboth Beach. Shirley was “rescued” by her rescue cat, Sandy. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Shirley is survived by two children, Terry Way, husband of Cheri of Elizabethtown and Kathy Gainer, wife of John of Lancaster; a step-daughter, Cindy Gochnauer, wife of Karl of Mountville; four grandchildren, Rebecca Sears of Lancaster, Johnny Gainer, husband of Spencer Nendza of Philadelphia, Adam Way of Elizabethtown, and Joshua Sears of Lancaster; and a brother, Herbert Stahl, husband of Susan of Wernersville.
She was preceded in death by two stepchildren, Lisa and Michael Sears; a sister, Joan Bryan; and a brother, Robert Koser.

Albert W. Whalen - September 20, 1932 - April 06, 2021

Obituary Preview: Albert W. Whalen of Mount Joy, PA passed away, surrounded by family, on Tuesday April 6, 2021 at the Masonic Village Health Care Center in Elizabethtown, PA.  He was born in Pottsville, PA son of the late Albert and Marie (Ernst) Whalen.
In addition to his beloved wife of 64 years, June (Heinaman), Albert is survived by his daughter Kim Whalen (Joel Barch), son Scott Whalen, (Brenda Billet), his granddaughter Marisa Whalen and sister Doris (Whalen) Mayberry.
He graduated from Minersville High School in 1950.  As quarterback, Albert led the 1949 Minersville football team to the Eastern Conference Championship defeating Old Forge.   He earned a degree from Elizabethtown College in Business Administration and was also a graduate of Lancaster Business School.
Albert proudly served his country, with honor, in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict.  He served with the Combat Engineers attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He began his professional career at RCA’s Lancaster Plant before retiring after 38 years of dedicated service to RCA as Superintendent of Plant Facilities in 1993.
Albert was a Life Member and Past Commander of the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185 in Mount Joy.  He received the distinguished honor of District 10 Commander of the Year in 1987 and 2009.  He held Life Memberships in the VFW Post 5752 in Mount Joy, Mount Joy Sportsman’s Association, Mount Joy Fire Department, The Lancaster Liederkranz, Casiphia Lodge 551, Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Harrisburg Consistory and Tall Cedars of Lebanon-Lancaster Forest 27.  He was also a proud member of the 11 Gallon Club at the former St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lancaster, PA.  He was Grand Marshall of the 2014 Mount Joy Memorial Day Parade and proudly supported his brethren in the military and first responders.
He loved his family, spending winters with his wife June in Hilton Head Island, SC, chocolate chip cookies and the Philadelphia Eagles.  He was thrilled to have lived long enough to watch his Philadelphia Eagles soar to victory in Super Bowl LII in 2018.
He was a member of Glossbrenner United Methodist Church in Mount Joy.  Albert is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Walter Whalen.

Born in Magnolia, AR, she was the daughter of the late Hughey and Emma Eads. Betty was the wife of the late Harrison L. Melleby who passed away in 1980.
Betty worked various jobs before she was a sales associate at Watt & Shand Department Store. She was also a homemaker, who enjoyed cooking and entertaining. Betty also enjoyed nature, the outdoors, flowers and gardening. She took trips and tours with her traveling friends throughout the United States. Betty loved her dogs. She was a member of Chiques United Methodist Church in Mount Joy. Family was most important to Betty, she always kept up with her extended family in Arkansas, Texas and Missouri. She cherished the time with her daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Betty ended every phone call and family visit with “ I love you more”.
Betty is survived by three daughters, Carolynne Wanner, wife of Alfred, Rachel Baxter, wife of Lee, and Martha Bedford, wife of the late Robert; five grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and a great great granddaughter with two on the way.
She was preceded in death by her nine siblings.

​Donna was a graduate of Henderson High School class of 1971. She retired from Donegal School District as a Library Assistant after 29 years.  She volunteered at the Milanof-Schock Library since the early 1980s. She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served for over 40 years in many different capacities.  Donna centered her life around her family and faith.  She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.

James Bryner Endslow - December 30, 1926 - March 27, 2021

Obituary Preview: James Bryner Endslow, 94 of Marietta, passed away at St. Anne’s Retirement Community on Saturday, March 27, 2021, following a lengthy decline in health. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late William Harold Bryner and Marguerite Elizabeth (Spangler) Endslow. He is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Jean (Coller) Endslow. James is also survived by his three daughters and their families:  Margaret Kramer (Brad) of Mount Joy, Julie Shade of Camp Hill, and Ellen Endslow of West Chester; three grandchildren: Erin Kramer Ingoglia (Marc) of Bergenfield, NJ, Zachary Kramer of Landisville, and Olivia Shade of Pittsburgh; and one great-grandson: Brayden Ingoglia.
Jim was something of a renaissance man, having dabbled in a variety of careers throughout his life. He was a farmer, a carpenter, a mechanic, as well as a draftsman and surveyor. James eventually became a computer programmer and data processing manager, often complaining that he had been born too soon since he wasn’t able to truly take advantage of the computer generation. He retired from Huth Engineers in Lancaster after 25 years of service. He was also a private and commercially licensed pilot and spent a number of years operating the Donegal Airport.
A 1944 graduate of East Donegal Township High School, he studied chemistry for one year at F&M College and took numerous additional part-time and evening courses throughout the years. He was drafted into the Army, where he served two years stationed in Aschaffenburg, Germany.
A Free and Accepted Mason for 73 years, he was an active member of the Ashara-Casiphia Lodge #551, Lancaster Lodge of Perfection, Lancaster County Scottish Rite Club, Harrisburg Consistory, Donegal Masonic Hall Association, Zembo Temple, and York Rite. He was invited to become an honorary member of Supreme Council, 33rd Degree, Northern Masonic Jurisdiction in 1976, one of the youngest ever to be so honored.
Jim was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Mount Joy since 1961, where he was active in Sunday School and the choir for many years.
He is predeceased by three brothers – Harold B., George S., and William S Endslow.

Geraldine F. Smeigh - July 14, 1935 - March 26, 2021

Obituary Preview: On March 26, 2021 Geraldine “Gerry” Smeigh was called home by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with her family by her side at Moravian Manor in Lititz.
Gerry was born in Springfield Township, York County. She was the daughter of the late Harry K. and Ester I. (Krout) Keiser. Gerry is survived by her husband, Jon of Elizabethtown. They would have celebrated 70 years of marriage on July 28, 2021. She is survived by her son, Todd Smeigh and daughter-in-law, Dawn (Splain) Smeigh of Elizabethtown, granddaughter, Rachel Smeigh of Mount Joy, a grandson, Nathan Smeigh of Elizabethtown, and a grandson, Kyle Spigelmeyer of Elizabethtown. She is survived by a sister, Portia (Keiser) Smith and husband, James Smith of Roseboro, North Carolina. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces, nephews and their children. Gerry was proceeded in death by a sister, Mary (Maxwell) Oberlander and a son, Lynn E. Smeigh
Born July 14, 1935, Gerry was a life-long resident of York until 2011 when she and Jon relocated to Elizabethtown. Gerry was a member of Salem United Church of Christ and a long-time member of the choir. Her music ministry touched so many throughout her life. Her voice was beautiful and when she sang the words from the hymns could be felt by those who listened.
Gerry was a clerk and also a model for Dentsply International in York for over 30 years. She was a wonderful homemaker and a good friend to so many. The things most important to her and closest to her heart were her family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, hosting holiday meals, spending time with her grandchildren, visiting friends from church and enjoying her grand-dog, Cassie.
A celebration of Gerry’s life will be held on Saturday, April 3rd, at the Sheetz Funeral Home, 16 East Main Street, Mount Joy, PA. Family and friends are invited to visit with the family between 10 and 11 AM, with the service beginning at 11 AM. Pastor Kevin Becker from Salem UCC will be the officiant.

Kathleen A. Gotshall - October 11, 1950 - March 24, 2021

Obituary Preview: Kathleen A. Gotshall, 70, of Mount Joy, entered into God’s presence on March 24, 2021 after a courageous battle with cancer. Originally born in Kulpmont, PA she was the daughter of the late Alex W. and Lucille K. Shaffchick. She was the loving wife of Daniel D. Gotshall and together they celebrated 47 years of marriage in December of 2020.
Kathy attended Mt. Carmel High School, where she graduated third in her class; though with consideration of unweighted coursework, she would have been named Valedictorian. After graduating from the McCann School of Business and Technology, Kathy worked under Dr. Zavarous at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA. She then worked from home for many years as a medical transcriptionist, while devoting her life to raising her two children.
Kathy attended Community Bible Church and was a member of the Life Class. She also found fellowship and friendship within the Hempfield United Methodist Church. She enjoyed watching I Love Lucy, and shared special times watching the Waltons and Jeopardy with her husband. During the summer months, Kathy loved to go to yard sales and vacation at Harvey Cedars Bible Conference and Sandy Cove Ministries with her family. Kathy was a voracious reader and enjoyed taking her grandchildren to children’s programs led by Miss Jan at the Milanof-Schock Library. Her favorite Christian author was Max Lucado. She spent many hours scouring Pinterest for crafts and science experiments to do with her grandchildren; spending time caring for them was one of her life’s greatest delights. Kathy also loved to scrapbook and made many scrapbooks over the years that will be treasured by her family.
Kathy will be remembered as a kind and caring woman of deep faith who touched many lives, and as a loving friend, wife, mother and grandmother; she will be truly missed.
In addition to her husband, Kathy is survived by a son, Robert Samuel, husband of Simone (Brouse) of Mount Joy; a daughter, Rebecca Joy, wife of Travis Meiss of Columbia; and a brother, Michael Shaffchick, now living in North Carolina. She also will be deeply missed by her beloved grandchildren, Leah and Caleb Meiss.

Joan L. Way - July 12, 1921 - March 20, 2021

Obituary Preview: Joan L. Way, 99,  passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 20 at Elizabethtown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness. Joan was mostly known as Mom and Nanny, but in her lifetime she was also wife, sister, aunt and friend to those who knew and loved her.
The daughter of Henry and Kathryn Gruber Sites, Joan was married for 59 years to William J. Way when he died in 2000.  Surviving are her children, Patricia and William, her granddaughter Alicia Showalter, married to Ian, great-grandchildren Beckett and Delaney Showalter, and several nieces and nephews and their children.  Several sisters and a brother pre-deceased her.

Born in Hershey, she was the daughter of the late Harvey H. and Sara (Brightbill) Ebersole. Violet was the wife of the late James L. Frey Sr. who passed away on October 24, 2014.
Violet was a graduate of Hershey High School class of 1954. She retired from Hershey Foods working in data processing. She was a member of Bright Hope Church in Elizabethtown. Violet enjoyed Southern Gospel Music, NASCAR, and most of all spending time with her family.
Violet is survived by two sons, James L. Frey, husband of Gail of Elizabethtown and Randall E. Frey of Palmyra; two grandchildren, Sarah E. Frey of Mount Joy and David J. Frey, husband of Kati of Elizabethtown; a great grandson, Timothy Frey; two brothers, Roy B. Ebersole, husband of Velma of Manheim and Gary R. Ebersole of Elizabethtown; and a sister, Ruth A. Ebersole of Hershey.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Harvey H. Ebersole Jr. and his wife, Sandra Ebersole; and Violet’s sister in law, Verna Ebersole.

Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late Robert E. and Bertha M. (Liethiser) Krause. Ron was the husband of Linda L. (Smeltz) Krause with whom he celebrated 42 years of marriage.
Ron was a graduate of J.P. McCaskey class of 1966. He received an Associate degree from F&M College and a Bachelor of Science from Southern Nazarene University. Ron retired from Armstrong World Industries in 2003 after 36 years of service as a Human Resources Manager. After retirement he worked for Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Human Resources and again for Armstrong consulting. Ron enjoyed trips to Cape May and going on cruises. Most of all he enjoyed his trips with his grandchildren to Disney.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Linda, are three children, Robert C. Krause, husband of Lisa Krause of Lancaster, Stacie L. Baker, wife of Paul C. Baker III of Willow Street, and Courtney E. Krause of Lancaster. Also surviving are ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Roy was well liked and always willing to help others. A Free and Accepted Mason, he was a member of the Ashara-Casiphia Lodge #551, Mount Joy, the Zembo Shrine, Harrisburg. He was also a member of the Susquehanna Beneficial Association, Moose International #596, Elizabethtown, and the American Legion Post 466, Marietta and Post 197, Bainbridge, and the Hillside Rod & Gun Club, Blossburg, PA.
Roy is survived by a sister, Doris Jane Fogie, wife of the late Donald E. of Bainbridge; a brother, Jack L. Gutshall, husband of JoAnn of Vestal, NY; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James W. Gutshall, husband of Kathryn.

Obituary Preview: Melvin R. “Mel” Hufford, 87, of Mount Joy, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2021 at the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. He was the loving and devoted husband of Peggy (Offer) Hufford for almost 66 years.
Melvin was a veteran of the United States Armed Forces and spent time serving in Germany. He graduated from Hershey High School in 1952. He spent many of his years working for M&M Mars and retired from Donsco, Inc. in Mount Joy.
Melvin enjoyed gardening and planting beautiful flowers for his wife. He maintained a vegetable garden each year and was known by his family for growing the best green beans. He also enjoyed repairing small motors. His family and friends always knew they could count on him to fix their lawn equipment.
In addition to wife, Peggy, Melvin is survived by his son, Michael Hufford; daughter, Melody (Hufford) Miller; three grandchildren, Gary Miller, Noel (Miller) Wisniewski, wife of John Wisniewski of Elizabethtown, and Alexandra Miller; and one great-granddaughter, Jazmin Melendez.
His wife and family would like to thank Masonic Village for the care and compassion they provided to Melvin. He will be dearly missed and memories of him will be cherished forever.
A private graveside service will take place for the family at West Green Tree Cemetery.

A Free and Accepted 32nd Degree Mason, he was a member of the Eureka - West Shore Masonic Lodge #681, Mechanicsburg, the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Harrisburg, and the Harrisburg Consistory.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Mary, are two sons, Brian J. Hill, husband of Dusty of Crestview, FL and Daniel J. Hill, husband of Maureen of Colorado Springs, CO; 5 grandchildren, Courtney, Colby, Alex, Mackenzie, and Zachary; and a brother, John S. Hill, husband of Emily of Beech Creek, PA.

Paul proudly served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard of the United States. He retired from Alcoa after 41 years of service as a lab technician. Paul was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mount Joy and a lifelong member of the Fire Department Mount Joy. He enjoyed driving his thunderbird, watching Penn State Football, playing golf with the seniors at Groffs Farm and trips to his cabin. Most of all, Paul cherished the time he spent with his family especially with his grandchildren.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Mary Ann are four children, Jeany Herr, wife of Dennis of Lebanon, Paul Lauver Jr., husband of Dori of Landisville, Craig Lauver of Bainbridge, and Todd Lauver, husband of Misty of Mount Joy; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a great great grandchild; a sister, Evelyn Shenk of Manheim; and a brother, Ronald Lauver of Hazelton.
