Marie Pearl Bartley - June 14, 1933 - March 22, 2024

Departed: 03/22/2024 (Yakima)
Obituary Preview: Marie Pearl (Elliot) Bartley was born a Coal Miner's Daughter, in Casper, Wyoming, on Wednesday, June 14, 1933. Marie committed her life to being a loving mother, devoted wife, and caring aunt, and grandmother.
Marie grew up on the Wyoming Prairie during the Great Depression. This is likely where she became such a strong woman even at an early age. The oldest of four sisters, with an older brother as wild as the Wyoming winds, Marie learned at an early age how to make ends meet. She did it as if she were the richest person in the room. Marie was an active gardener who loved spending hours outside with her flowers, berries, and plants. She was a "tough old bird," and an extremely strong woman, suffering a broken hip in her later years and pulling through, claiming it "didn't hurt too bad".
She spent hours recording movies she liked onto VHS tapes, keeping her taped treasures in card catalog form, and checking them out to friends and family as if she were a librarian. On return visits, if you hadn't returned a movie you had borrowed, she would be sure to remind you. It's unknown if any late charges were invoked, you just might not have gotten any dessert after dinner.
Marie was a wonderful cook, impressing friends, family, and neighbors with her famous "blonde brownies," shortbread, goulash, chili, and split pea soup, along with many other favorites. She enjoyed adding vinegar to her bowl of lima or navy beans, a taste you either liked or hated but worth trying. You could always count on a meal from Marie's Kitchen on every visit. You could also bank on her telling you one thing if you were late at dinnertime, "There's the quick and the hungry," even if she didn't really mean it.
Marie always had a bowl of candy that was visited by the sweet tooth's upon arrival, and often throughout one's visit. I dont think I ever heard her say "that's enough", although she would usually tell the younger children, "As long as it's alright with your parents". The candy bowl was something the grandchildren especially looked forward to. Marie lost the love of her life, Jack, in 2010. They were married by candlelight on the evening of St. Patrick's Day 1951, at Memorial Bible Church in Naches, Washington. Jack and Marie enjoyed each other's company so much. Marie would often go on adventures that many spouses would have graciously declined. Jack enjoyed shooting and hunting and Marie would assist with "target practice" and game spotting. Marie had a keen eye for spotting animals in the wild for Jack, which came in especially handy in the later years when Jack's eyes were not as great as they once were. Jack enjoyed Jeeping, Marie would hold the youngest child on her lap, traveling endless miles over some of the most challenging jeep trails and mountain roads in Central Washington. Not even having a Jeep tip on its side (her side) during an unsuccessful hill climb deterred her great admiration for her lifelong companion. As the saying goes, "Beside every great man stands a greater woman."
Marie is survived by her sisters, Judy Boster and Kathy Fairbank, both from Boise, ID., daughters, Sally (Darrell) Curless of Williamsburg, MO., Jackie (Richard) Swanson of Yakima, WA., and sons, Alan Bartley of Hilo, HI., and Mark (Christine) Bartley of Sequim, WA. Marie was blessed with 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Marie was also beloved by many nieces and nephews. Marie will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to have known her. Its a joy to know that Jack and Marie are on some crazy adventure right now in heaven. Let's just hope that Saint Peter doesn't gain too much weight eating all those blonde brownies. Love You, Mom!
At her request, there will be no services.

Barbara June Engleman - March 01, 2024 - March 18, 2024

Departed: 03/18/2024 (Yakima)
Obituary Preview: Barbara June Engleman left her earthly body and went home to her Lord and Savior on Monday, March 18, 2024. Barbara was born in Boulder, Colorado, and spent her earlier years in Colorado, before moving with her family to Canada, when she was eight years old.
She returned to the States for college, where her cousin, Pete, introduced her to the love of her life, Homer Dee Engleman. They had a wonderful courtship, writing letters back and forth, while Homer served in the Navy. They were married on the 6th of July 1969. Both shared a love for children and lived a full life raising their four kids in Selah, Washington.
Barbara was the ultimate homemaker and crafter. She baked breads, cakes, and cookies weekly for her growing family. Sewing was also her passion, and she spent years honing her craft, even going so far as to pursue a degree in fashion design. Her daughters were especially delighted to wear some of her creations throughout their childhoods and teenage years.
Barbara was a deeply faithful woman and found joy in life and serving God. She especially enjoyed being a mother, grandmother, foster parent, and as a Sunday School teacher, youth leader, 4-H leader and farmer. She was also an avid supporter of her grandsons sporting and farming events. She was often seen in the stands, rain or shine.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Homer, her sister, Kathryn Zeigler, and her father, George Zeigler. She is survived by her mother, Ruth Roberts Zeigler, her other two sisters, Anne, and Beckie, her four children and their spouses, Greg and Amy Engleman, Pennie and Gary Sandt, Debbie and Ron Reyer, and Jeremy and Emily Engleman. She is also survived by her four fabulous grandchildren who were her pride and joy, Savannah, Bria, Zachary, and Gavin.
Barbaras steadfast faith and absolute certainty as to where she was going is a great comfort to her family, and is also a testament to her unwavering faith and deep relationship with God. She was excited and overjoyed to see her husband, father, and father-in-law again. If we could tell our mom anything now, we would say, "We know you wanted everything private, but sorry, Mom, we wanted you to be recognized for what you were because you were a wonderful mom and we are proud of you and the life you led."
A Graveside Service will be held in her honor, at Terrace Heights Memorial Park, on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at 11:00am.

Lavon Marie Sills - March 01, 2024 - March 14, 2024

Departed: 03/14/2024 (Yakima)
Obituary Preview: Lavon Marie Sills passed away peacefully on March 14, 2024. She had just celebrated her 90th birthday. Born to Archie and Lilah Joslin, in Cambridge, Idaho, in 1934. Lavon and family moved to Yakima at the age of six. Lavon grew up in a large loving family of eight, six girls, and two boys.
She graduated from Yakima High School at the same time as her best friend and sister, Lee.
Lavon married and had three boys that she raised by herself after the marriage ended.
She worked at Red Lion Inn, as head housekeeper for 37 years. Lavon never drove. She walked to and from work, saying she could not afford the upkeep of a car. She also used the city bus, and being the friendly person she was, soon made friends with the drivers. In her spare time, she loved to go to the pool, first with her own boys and then with her grandchildren, who learned to love the water as much as she did.
Lavon was able to purchase her own home by saving her money and living frugally, all while helping others whenever they needed it. Lavon joined an exercise group at the local YMCA that she attended weekly. While there, she became fast friends with the other ladies, they would have coffee and snacks before class so they could visit and catch up. Soon they were meeting for lunch once a month to celebrate birthdays. This lasted until Lavon was injured in a fall and was unable to participate, so they still stayed in touch by phone. She always enjoyed her time spent with these kind ladies.
Lavon loved to travel, as did her sister, Roberta. Together they went on many trips with the Harman Senior Center. What adventures they had! Even ziplining together, both in their eighties. Imagine. After an illness and hospital stay about four years ago my husband, Robin, Lavons oldest son, and our family welcomed her into our home to live with us. We enjoyed her so much and have many fun memories to look back on. Lavons love for family was the most important thing in her life.
I would like to give a special thanks to Lavons grandson, Dennis (little Denny). They shared a very close relationship. Dennis would willingly and lovingly do anything for his grandma, be it taking her to doctors appointments, picking up prescriptions, or even just a shopping trip to Walmart. All she had to do was call. Their love for each other was a wonderful thing.
Lavon is survived by her sons, Robin (Debbie), Chris (Tami), sisters, Roberta Morgan, Lois Guthmiller, Marge Wright, brother, Lonnie (Lillian), and sister in-law, Mary Joslin, grandchildren, Dennis (Michelle), Kristie, Stephanie, Amanda, and Layne, and 11 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Archie and Lilah Joslin, sister, Bodeen Hayes, sister, Lee Alm, brother, Gerald Joslin, son, Dennis (Denny), and grandson, Brandon.
At her request, there will be no services.
