Obituary Preview: Florita S. Herne, 93, formerly of Ransom Township, died peacefully on Wednesday, July 31 at Allied Hospice Center. Her husband, Raymond, died December 20, 1968.
Born in Kansas, she was the daughter of the late Jerome and Eunice Sonni Leccese, she was a 1942 graduate of West Scranton High School, and a member of Countryside Community Church, Clarks Summit. Florita was a very hardworking woman, always doing something to provide for her family. She retired from RCA-Thompson, Dunmore where she worked for many years. Florita was an avid reader, when she wasn’t working, she was likely enjoying a good book. She was kind to everyone she met and will be remembered for her smile that could light up a room.
The Herne family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Geisinger CMC, Clarks Summit Senior Living, and Allied Hospice for the care and compassion they extended to Florita.
She is survived by her son, Raymond J. Herne and wife, Helen; her daughter, Sheila J. Ferraro and husband, Robert, all of Clarks Summit; six grandchildren, Michele Vellea and husband Thomas, Robert Ferraro and wife Catherine, Raymond T. Herne, Shelby Vellea, and Andrew Vellea; and three great-grandchildren, Robert Ferraro, Madison Vellea, and Dominique Ferraro.
Florita was preceded in death by her grandson Raymond Ferraro; a brother, Joe Leccese; and a sister Alba Leccese.

Obituary Preview: Joan Sochovka Keppick, a lifelong resident of Taylor, entered eternal life on Thursday, shortly after arrival at Regional Hospital of Scranton. Her husband, Michael died August 6, 1970.
Born in Taylor, she was the oldest of three daughters, born to the late John and Anna Krisko Sochovka and was a 1954 graduate of Taylor High School. She started her career working at the Wilkes-Barre Office of Public Welfare and retired from the Scranton Office. A devoted Catholic, Joan was a daily communicant at mass and was faithful attending St. Ann’s Novena. She was a parishioner of Divine Mercy Parish and the former St. John the Baptist Church, Taylor. Throughout her life, Joan was an excellent cook and baker, especially making ethnic dishes. Her family was the focal point in her life, and she was always there to lend a helping hand.
Surviving are a daughter, Joanne Corey and her husband, William; a son, Michael and wife, Gina; two grandchildren, Chris Corey and Rob Corey, M.D. and wife, Mary; a sister, Anne McCormack; nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, James, June 5, 1981 and her sister, Margaret Sochovka, July 31, 2017.
Family and friends are invited to attend Joan’s Mass of Christian Burial which will be held on Monday, July 22 at 10 am in Divine Mercy Parish, 312 Davis St., Scranton, to be celebrated by the Rev. Francis L. Pauselli. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Taylor. There will be no public calling hours.

Surviving are five sons, Khamtanh and wife, Vasana; Khamphan and wife, Nanthan; Sam and wife, Somsanith, all of Scranton; Seth and wife, Cynthia, Duryea and Xay and wife, Kommaly Old Forge; three daughters, Bounmy Mosangkoun, Minnesota; Ban Keoonela and husband, Savath and Sy Insixiengmay and husband, Vince both of Scranton. Keo has over 125 grandchildren and great grandchildren, who all love her dearly.

Obituary Preview: James N. Sylvester, 79, of Port Orange, Florida, entered eternal rest on Monday, July 8 surrounded by his family loving family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 53 years, the former Anelaine Potkul.
Born in Scranton, on January 13, 1940, he was the son of the late James and Louise Provini Sylvester and was a 1959 graduate of West Scranton High School. Jim proudly served our country with the US Army during the Korean War. For over thirty years, he worked as railroad engineer, retiring from New Jersey Transit. In 2002, he and his family moved from Hopatcong, New Jersey to Port Orange, Florida. Jim was a parishioner of Holy Cross Eastern Orthodox Church, Ormond Beach, Florida. In retirement, Jim was an avid golfer, baseball enthusiast, had a vast collection of coins, and enjoyed playing cards with his many friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, James and Jon, both of Port Orange, FL; a sister, Carol Garminga and a sister-in-law Theresa Sylvester, both of Scranton; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis and Dominick.
Family and friends are invited to attend Jim’s funeral service, which will be held on Monday at 10:30 am in the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St. Taylor, with service by the Very Rev. Together they had two sons, whom she loved dearly. She was a housewife, doing everything she could to make sure her family was taken care of. Margarete was well loved, extremely caring, and always there to offer a helping hand to those who needed it.
In addition to her husband Randolph, Margarete is survived by her two sons, Michael Scott of Jermyn, and Daniel Scott and wife, Teresa, of East Stroudsburg; three grandchildren, Mychael, Maya, and Neveah; two brothers, Gustav Eisenhauer and wife, Petra, of Germany and Eric Eisenhauer and wife, Helka, Germany; and five sisters, Renate Bennett, Vera Shack, Illona Eisenhauer, Korala Eisenhauer, and Elke Soltysiak.

Obituary Preview: Jeanne M. Conroy Pregmon, of East Mountain, died peacefully with her family at her side at the Jewish Home of Eastern Pa, on Thursday, July 4. She is survived by her devoted husband, Donald and together they celebrated 59 years of marriage on June 25.
Born in Scranton, she was one of two daughters born to the late Thomas and Helen Cleary Conroy and was a 1958 graduate of South Catholic High School. After Jeanne’s children began school, she received her beautician certification and thus began her career of many years of Pregmons Beauty Salon and she also worked for several years at St. Joseph’s Center with the newborns, prior to their adoption. A faithful and devoted Catholic, Jeanne had a deep devotion for the rosary. She was a lifelong member of the Holy Name of Jesus Church, and following the consolidation of her church, she became a member of Saint Peter’s Cathedral. Her family was the center of her life, along with her dog, Holly Rose and she never missed attending an event in their lives. Throughout the years, Jeanne played golf with the mixed league at Pine Hills, enjoyed shopping, going to auctions and loved watching game shows. Above all, Jeanne was a kind and gentle lady.
The Pregmon family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Mary Ann McDonald, the VNA Hospice and the staff of the Jewish Home, gratefully acknowledging, Sue and Ginny for their care and compassion show to them.

Obituary Preview: Mary Mayak Skamanich Usckavizy, 94, of West Scranton, entered eternal rest on Tuesday afternoon, with her family by her side at Linwood Nursing Center. Her first husband, John Skamanich died December 15, 1981.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine Domashowitz Mayak. She was a longtime member of St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church, West Scranton. For over twenty-five years, she was a custodian at PNC Bank. Mary enjoyed spending quality time with her family, sewing, making homemade horseradish, helping with gardening, making Kielbasa and volunteering for her church making pirohy. She was a loving, caring and wonderful mother who will be greatly missed. She will be remembered for her “Heart of Gold” for everyone.
Surviving are two daughters, Marge Bednar and husband, John and Elaine Skamanich, both of Scranton; a son, Ronald Skamanich and wife, Linda, Duryea; four grandchildren, Jennifer Aponick and husband, Joseph, Kari Skamanich, Todd Skamanich and wife, Gerri and Kayla Skamanich; seven great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister. The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the nurses, aids and staff at Linwood Nursing Center and Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their love, care, concern and for going above and beyond, especially the last several days of Mary’s life. Obituary Preview: Joseph Strok Jr, of the Greenwood section of Moosic, entered eternal rest on Thursday evening at Allied Hospice. He is survived by his wife, the former Sherry Sabitus and together they celebrated 17 wonderful years of marriage.
Born in Baltimore Maryland, he was the son of the late Joseph Sr. and Dorothy Bernacik Strok and graduated from Riverside High School, Class of 1975 and furthered his education at Penn State, Harrisburg, where he received his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. In 2016, he retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, where he was employed for 33 years. Joe was the code enforcement officer for Moosic Borough and was a member of the Moosic planning commission. He was a parishioner of St. Stephens Russian Orthodox Church, Old Forge. Throughout his life, Joe enjoyed working in his garden, riding his motorcycle, taking out his convertible and playing horseshoes. An avid and excellent bowler, he belonged to the Unpredictables and Providence Men’s Leagues. Every spring, he looked forward to his fishing trips with the TCF club in Canada. His family and his dog, Missy, were by his side each day and brought him much comfort and happiness.
The Strok family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Paula Ronjon, the oncology department at Geisinger Wyoming Valley, the staffs of Allied Hospice and Traditional Home Health for the care, support and kindness given to them.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Julianna Warnack and husband, Craig, Wilkes-Barre and Dominique Juliano, Charlotte, NC; a son, Nicholas Sabitus, Carlsbad, California; three grandchildren, McKayla White, who was the apple of his eye and Madison and Nathan Warnack.

Joseph Novotka - December 22, 1927 - June 26, 2019

Obituary Preview: Joseph W. Novotka, 91, of the Lincoln Heights Section of Taylor, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday at his home. His beloved wife, the former Helen Mokay, died August 3, 2016 and together they were devoted to each other for 68 years.
Born in Taylor, son of the late Walter and Mary Polaschak Novotka and he was a 1946 graduate of Taylor High School where his excellent athletic abilities in baseball, basketball, and football, set numerous records which earned him great recognition and football scholarships which he rejected to marry the love of his life. He taught himself carpentry and other skills to build his own home, starting with the foundation, to the very last finishing touches. Joe went on to build 95 homes and mentored many young carpenters. Prior to his retirement, Joe worked as a carpenter for the University of Scranton.
He was a parishioner of St. Ann’s Basilica. In his younger years he served his parish in many ways: an usher, building the stands for the parish picnic, ran bingos, served as PTA president for St. Ann School, and most noteworthy built a Baptismal Font which was used by the parish for many years.
Joe enjoyed gardening and canning his own produce, cooking, baking apple pies, fishing, golfing, bowling, playing with great grandchildren, and so many other things. Sunday’s was family time and reminiscing about the past. He was very creative, innovative, clever, and capable of fixing anything. His quiet, yet witty, strong presence will be greatly missed by many. As Joe became homebound, his granddaughter, Joanna became a tremendous help to him, along with daily visits from his children.
The Novotka Family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Dr. Mark Lyons and the nurses and staff of Hospice of the Sacred Hearts for their support and care.
Also surviving are four daughters, Marsha Foy and husband, Tom, Justus; Marilyn K. Howells, Scranton; Joanne Connor and husband, James, Taylor; and Janice Novotka, Scranton; four sons, Joseph and wife, Maria, Frederick, Md.; Walter M. and wife, Jackie, Louisville, Ky.; Michael and wife, Peggy; and Ronald J. and wife, Sherry, all of Taylor; 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

William Hyduchak - April 08, 1946 - June 20, 2019

Obituary Preview: William “Bill” J. Hyduchak, 73, Taylor, died Thursday at Geisinger Community Medical Center.
Born in Taylor Hospital, Taylor on April 8, 1946, son of the late George Sr. and Marie Gnall Hyduchak. He was a graduate of the Taylor-Moosic High School, Class of 1964.
He earned an Associate Degree from Keystone College in 1968 and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Millersville University in 1970 and the consummate educator furthered his graduate studies at Marywood University. He was a lifelong member of St. George’s Orthodox Church, Taylor, where he served many years as a trustee. He was very generous to his church, Diocese and its institutions. Bill was also a member and President of the Senior ACRY (American Carpatho Russian Youth), St. Georges Choir and Social Club which was near and dear to his heart. He could be found every week there singing traditional Carpathian folk and church songs and always encouraging young people to learn the songs, music and their heritage. A delegate to the Diocesan Church Councils (Sobor) beginning in 1979, missing only one meeting. He was involved in almost all church sponsored events. Bill was member of the First Russian American Federation, Johnstown and the PA State Education Association Retired and Southern Poverty Law Center, Montgomery, AL.
He was active in Democratic politics, especially in his youth, beginning when he was 14 in 1960 when John F. Kennedy was elected President. He was President of the College Young Democrats at Millersville, and committee man for the fourth ward in Taylor Borough. While at Millersville he was active in Democratic politics and campaigns in Lancaster, PA. Bill was a social studies teacher at Riverside Jr. Sr. High School for 36 years and served as Student Council Advisor for several years followed by numerous years as District Director of District IX of the State Board of PA Assoc. of Student Councils (PASC).
He is survived by sister-in-law Barbara Hyduchak, Throop. Nieces Denise Arnold and husband Bob, Tucson, AZ and Dee Ann Vida and husband Chris, Clarks Summit; Nephews George and wife Ann, Phoenix, AZ and William Hyduchak, Olyphant, Aunts, Uncles, numerous cousins and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his Brother George Hyduchak.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service on Wednesday at 8:45 am from the Semian Funeral Home, 704 Union St. Taylor followed by services at 9:30 am in St. George’s Orthodox Church, 743 S. Steve Olexovitch - April 12, 1930 - June 19, 2019

Obituary Preview: Steve Olexovitch, 89, of Taylor, PA died peacefully in his sleep on June 19, 2019. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Romayne Maslanka Olexovitch on April 28, 2016.
Born in Taylor, PA on April 12, 1930, son of the late John and Mary Dicko Olexovitch. He was a graduate of Taylor High School, Class of 1948. Steve served proudly in the US Army during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Ann's Basilica Parish and the Taylor Senior Citizens.
A natural athlete, Steve excelled in both football and track at Taylor High School, but his true passion and talent was for the game of golf. While in Connecticut he held the distinction of being club champion of Fairchild Wheeler and Tashua Knolls Golf Clubs a combined 5 times as well as winning several member-guest tournaments. His most distinct accomplishment before retiring and returning to PA was becoming the CT Senior State Amateur Golf Champion. He continued to win numerous awards in golf after retirement and even scored a hole-in-one last year at the age of 88, at Pine Hills Golf Club, Taylor.
He was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and had a special knack for making everyone around him laugh. He will be sadly missed by family and his many friends.
Surviving are a daughter Marie Parker and husband Tyrone, Stratford, CT, sons Steven and wife Lisa, Palmyra, PA, Paul and wife Debbie, Stratford, CT and Gary, Newtown, CT. Adoring grandchildren, Stephanie Jameson, Brett, Chris, Michelle, Gabrielle and Jack Olexovitch, Alicia, Morgan, Jillian Parker and Jade Turski, Great-granchildren, Carson, Ivy, Scarlett Olexovitch and Isla Jameson, numerous nieces and nephews, and his loving niece Christine Hembury, who was like a daughter to her Uncle Steve. Also, a special thanks to Dave and Kevin Prislupsky for their incredible generosity through the years. He was preceded in death by a daughter Teresa Olexovitch Sweeney.

Her beloved husband, William Leggon Jr. died February 2, 2010. They were joined in marriage on January 21, 1990 in St. George’s Orthodox Church, Taylor and together, they started a new beginning.
Born in Scranton on June 24, 1952, she was the only child of Anthony F. and Louise M. Cigna Kafchhinski. Shirley was a 1971 graduate of Central High School and furthered her education at Penn State in accounting and computer science. For over 25 years, she was assistant supervisor in the business office at Lackawanna Health Care. Sturges. She was a lifelong parishioner of St. Paul of the Cross Parish. Shirley enjoyed traveling, especially to Bradenton, Florida in the winter months, and while there, she was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Post 3174, the American Legion, Post 24 and the Women of the Moose Lodge, Chapter 1072. She and her late husband, enjoyed dancing and they were members of the VFW, Post 4909, Dupont. Surviving is a son, Ronald A. Malinchak, Carbondale; two grandchildren, Ronald Jacob and Adria Gabriell, who brought her much joy and comfort; and an aunt, Josephine Cigna,

Born in Taylor, the only son of the late Steven and Mary Fedor Mekilo. Steve was a 1972 graduate of Riverside High School. Prior to his retirement, Steve was employed B Braun Medical for many years. Steve passion was his 1988 Harley Motorcycle. When is granddaughter Gracie was born, she then became the light of his life. He enjoyed the simple beauty of life and will be dearly missed.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Joshua and wife, Kathy and their daughter, Gracie, Sammamish, Washington and Justin, Lehighton. A sister Barbara Cordova and husband, Tony, Albuquerque, New Mexico; a loving Godfather to Sarah Lyon, Dunmore; Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, a lifelong friend Ray Paroby, Clarks Summit.

Born in Scranton on July 13, 1948, she was the daughter of the late William and Marion Williams Lotz. In 1966, Charlene graduated from Scranton Technical High School. For over 27 years, she was employed by Burger King Restaurant, Dickson City. She was a parishioner of St. Mary’s Visitation Church, Dickson City. Charlene enjoyed baking and cooking not only for her family and friends, but for anyone in need. She was a devoted grandmother, mother, wife and friend, especially to her cousin. Her favorite team was the Philadelphia Phillies.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son T.R. Homenchak, Dickson City; a daughter, Dawn Borosky and her husband, Joseph, Throop; two grandchildren, Sean and Kelly Homenchak; a cousin, Sandra Hannick, Scranton.
She was preceded in death by two brothers Ronald and James Lotz.

Surviving are her four sisters, Shirley Killino, and husband, Donald, Old Forge, who were her caregivers and were at her side until the end; Dora Connell and husband, James, Taylor; Betty Evans and Rosemary Skibar, both of Long Pond; four brothers, Joseph Rodriguez and wife Rosie, Midlothian, Texas; Sal Rodriguez and wife, Nancy, Totowa, New Jersey; James Rodriguez and wife, Emily, Fort Wirth, Texas and Genaro Ortiz, McAllen, Texas; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene Rodriguez and Marcus Ortiz.

Throughout his life, Gene loved restoring old cars, especially his 1994 Camaro, and given his ability to fix anything, was the inspiration for others. Gene’s greatest joy in life was his family, evidenced by the unwavering love and devotion he expressed for his wife, children, and grandchildren.

He was a parishioner of Divine Mercy Parish and St. John the Baptist Church, Taylor until its closing and was a member of the Amalgamated Transit Union, local 168. Ray was a train enthusiast, along with watching western movies and listening to the polkas. Upon retirement, he enjoyed cutting the lawns for many of his neighbors and hence forth became the neighborhood mayor. His family was the center of his life and his grandchildren and great grandchildren meant everything to him.

He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies and New York Giants fan. His family was the center of his life and he was very proud of his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children; Diane Fahringer and husband, Doug, Trooper; Peter A. and wife, Kristi, Scott Twp. and Lisa Casella and husband, Vincent, Old Forge; five grandchildren, Sam and Peter Fahringer, Vincent Casella, Kassidy Chuff and Nicholas Casella; a brother, Salvatore Trionfo; a sister-in-law, Ann Trionfo, a brother-in-law Ted Goosley and wife, Sonia; nieces and nephews.

Fred was a liflong member of the Embury United Methodist Church, West Scranton
He loved trains and had a collection of Lionel trains and accessories with some that were up to 70 years old and, every Christmas, would put up a massive display under the tree. He loved watching movies, especially westerns with cowboys, and old serials. He enjoyed reading western stories/novels and doing jigsaw puzzles.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Nancy, Lori and Jeffrey, all of Scranton; a nephew, Ted Brown and wife, Susan, White House, Tenn.; nieces, Judy Brown, Clarks Summit; and Eleanor Murphy and husband, James, Clarks Summit; and numerous other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by sisters, Molvina Canterbury, Ellen Mohr and Beatrice Bradshaw; and brothers, Lewellyn John and Carl Bittenbender.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Mountain View Care Center for the compassionate care given to Fred during his short stay with them; they were truly a blessing.

Madge was an avid bowler with the Taylor Ladies Bowling League, a member of the Taylor Senior Citizens and an avid reader.
Surviving are three sons, George and wife, Pamela, Lehighton; Robert M. and companion, Mary Calles, James and wife, Deborah, all Taylor; a daughter, Carol Vesperino, Pittston, ten grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John and a sister, Dorothy Ameika.

Joe was a parishioner of Divine Mercy Parish and Saints Peter and Paul Church, Avoca until their closing. He was a member of the American Legion Post 604, Moosic and served on the Moosic Borough Planning Commission. After retirement, Joe loved to decorate his home, which he loved and took great pride in it.
Suzanne would like to express her deepest gratitude to the staff of Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and to Hospice of the Sacred Heart for their compassion and care given to her dad the past few months.
