Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their family, accomplishments, and any notable achievements.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by a family member or close friend of the deceased, although it can also be written by a funeral home or newspaper staff member. In some cases, the deceased may have written their own obituary in advance.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, and other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and the individual's life story. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful to readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, many people choose to write their own obituaries in advance as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately and with dignity. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life and accomplishments.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, typically including only the most basic information. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and legacy.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help to make the tribute more engaging and memorable.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the newspaper or online platform. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for print publication, with online options often being less expensive or even free.

Can I publish an obituary online only?

Yes, there are many online platforms that allow you to publish an obituary without printing it in a physical newspaper. These websites often offer additional features such as guest books, photo galleries, and donation links.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration of an online obituary's availability varies depending on the website or platform. Some sites may keep them active indefinitely, while others may archive them after a certain period of time.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, yes. Contact the newspaper or online platform where the obituary was published to request changes or corrections. Keep in mind that some publications may charge for revisions or updates.

What if I need to correct errors in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication immediately to report any errors or inaccuracies. They will work with you to correct the mistakes and reprint or update the obituary as needed.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about memorial donations or charitable funds in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How do I handle sensitive or private information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive or private matters related to the deceased's life or circumstances surrounding their death, it's best to exercise discretion when writing the obituary. Focus on celebrating their life and achievements rather than dwelling on negative aspects.

Can I include quotes or poetry in an obituary?

Absolutely! Quotes, poems, or lyrics that were meaningful to the deceased can add depth and personality to the tribute. Just be sure to obtain any necessary permissions for copyrighted materials.

What if I'm unsure about what to write in an obituary?

Drafting an obituary can be a daunting task. If you're struggling, consider enlisting the help of a friend or family member who knew the deceased well. You can also consult with a funeral home or professional writer for guidance.

How soon after a person's passing should an obituary be published?

The timing of publishing an obituary varies depending on cultural traditions and personal preferences. Typically, it's published within a few days of the person's passing, but it can be delayed until after funeral services or at a later date if desired.

Can I republish an old obituary for a anniversary or special occasion?

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to republish an existing obituary on special occasions such as anniversaries or birthdays. This can be a meaningful way to continue honoring the deceased's memory over time.

What if I want to create a more extensive tribute beyond an obituary?

You may consider creating a memorial website, scrapbook, or video tribute that showcases more photos, stories, and memories of the deceased. These types of tributes can serve as a lasting legacy for generations to come.

Is it appropriate to include pets in an obituary?

Absolutely! For many people, pets are beloved family members who play an important role in their lives. Including them in an obituary can be a touching way to acknowledge their significance.

Can I write an obituary for someone who has been deceased for many years?

Yes! Even if someone has been deceased for many years, you can still write and publish an obituary as a way to honor their memory and share their story with others.
