The memorial service will be livestreamed and a link will be available under the Events Section of Mary’s obituary on the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel website. Inurnment will be in Linwood Park Cemetery, Boone.
Mary Elizabeth Johnson was born August 31, 1940 in Boone County, the daughter of D. Paul and Luceil Eppert. Mary married Charles Johnson in Luther, Iowa, on June 4, 1960. Mary and Chuck had two daughters, Andrae Jean and Pamela Kay, and raised them on the Johnson family’s Century Farm home place in Boone. Mary spent 40 plus years working at Iowa State University, retiring in 2002. Mary was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where her faith guided her life and gave her strength.
Mary baked her way into the hearts of everyone she knew. She was an avid cook and baker, with a reputation for the best cinnamon rolls brought to every family gathering. And if she was not in the kitchen baking, you could find her tending to her vegetable garden and flower beds. It was not unusual for her to have the flat bed of the pick-up truck filled to the brim from flower shopping and then spend the next entire week planting flowers throughout the family farm. And while Mary loved to be in the kitchen, she also enjoyed a good Sunday brunch or dining out with family and friends. Mary loved to try new restaurants, as well as go shopping, antiquing and to craft shows. There was not a craft show that Mary did not attend that she would tell the girls, “We can easily create that ourselves”, and as such, the craft room at the family farm could give any retail craft store a run for their money with her supplies and ambitious ideas.
Mary had a love of travel and her and Chuck were fortunate to take many trips together throughout their marriage, making it to 49 states, Canada, Bahamas, Mexico and Costa Rica. Chuck and Mary loved to take the girls camping on week long adventures all across the country and the girls have fond memories of their many trips. Mary also traveled with both daughters several times to New York City for food, fun and laughter. She went with Pam in high school to four European countries, and a year ago traveled with her niece to Jerusalem to experience the Passion Play. Closer to home, Mary enjoyed numerous trips to Indianapolis to experience the Indy 500, to Canada for fishing trips, and found a true second home in Mesa, Arizona where she would spend her winters away from Iowa for 3 months.
Sports were also a high light of Mary’s adventures – whether it was sitting in the stands at Jack Trice Stadium cheering on her beloved Cyclones in football as a season ticket holder for 50 plus years, or watching her grandkids and great grandkids on a basketball court, a softball or baseball field, at a swim meet, or on the soccer field, Mary was their biggest fan and proudest grandparent. Mary and Chuck belonged to two card club groups where they made life-long friends who they played cards with, as well as enjoyed summers of picnics, camping and biking with these friends and their families. Mary extended this love of card playing with her grandkids, where there were always card games and board games being played at family gatherings, especially during the holidays.
And speaking of holidays, we’d be amiss, if we didn’t share Mary’s love for every single holiday. Mary decorated the entire farm house each and every month for the corresponding holiday of that month. From bedspreads, to table settings, to decorations, and apparel, the house was magically transformed for the holiday. She loved to entertain, host dinner parties, celebrate birthdays, and the more people the better. She invited Iowa State graduate and foreign students to the farm every summer to experience an Iowa farm, an Iowa meal, and Iowa hospitality. And her and Chuck’s 50th wedding anniversary party in 2010 was no exception – a wonderful gathering of family, friends and laughter and a fitting tribute to a wonderful couple.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Chuck Johnson. Also, preceding Mary’s death was her family: parents, Paul and Luceil Eppert, along with 7 siblings – brothers: Robert, Wilbur, Raymond, Frank, Dale, Art, and sister, Jean. Mary is survived by her favorite eldest daughter, Ann (Jeff) Powers of North Liberty, Iowa; her favorite youngest daughter, Pam (Pete) Deacon of Johnston, Iowa; grandchildren: Ottis (Jenny) Bunning of North Liberty, Paige (Lance) Von Ahsen of Williamsburg, Maxwell, Peter John, Jr. and Riley Deacon, all of Johnston; great-grandchildren Hannah and Molly Bunning of North Liberty, and Collins Von Ahsen of Williamsburg; sisters Katherine Huber of Loveland, Colorado and Barb Lytle of Spring, Texas.

Obituary Preview: Elizabeth Joan Snyder, age 86 of Cincinnati, OH, and formerly of Boone, passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the Lodge Nursing and Rehab Center in Loveland, OH.
Elizabeth was born on February 19, 1938, in Boone, IA, the daughter of James and Mary (Lyons) Fitzgerald. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1955.
Elizabeth was united in marriage with Raymond Snyder on May 19, 1956, at Sacred Heart Church in Boone.
Elizabeth was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was the CEO of the Snyder household, and her family was everything to her. She worked 24/7 and filled many roles, including short order cook, Uber driver, room mother, neighborhood mom, and counselor to many who found their way to her kitchen table. In the summer, she would supply snacks and make Kool-Aid “slush” in the blender. She was famous for her homemade chocolate cake, and everyone who walked through her door learned the proper way to eat her cake – in a bowl with milk on it. Her cake was so delicious, not even her husband Ray could taint it by adding Jell-O, bananas, and Watergate salad in the jumbo-sized blue bowl he used when eating it. Her cake is a tradition that lives on through her children and grandchildren, and it is the go-to cake for family birthdays. Elizabeth was selfless; always doing for others. She was a prayer warrior and had a personal relationship with Mary and Jesus. Her prayers often came in handy when her husband and children needed them. She lived for others until the end, even waiting for her children to be with her before saying goodbye (for now).
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 66 years, Raymond in 2022; daughter, Elizabeth Snyder; two grandsons, Colin Snyder and Brendan Snyder; great-grandson, Liam Snyder; four brothers, John, James, Donald, and Leo Fitzgerald; two sisters, Catherine Therese Riordan and Marylee Doerr.
She is survived by her children, Patrick (Shawn) Snyder of Wausau, WI, Michael (Jean) Snyder of Cincinnati, OH, John (Tina) Snyder of Chicago, IL and Mary (Robert) Orr of Omaha, NE; grandchildren, Amy (Chris) Heitman, Dan (Rebecca) Snyder, Margaret (David) Luken, Sarah Snyder, Tyler Snyder, Kiersten Snyder, John Snyder, Margaret Snyder, Andrew Snyder, Joseph Orr, Mary Kate Orr and Elizabeth Orr; great-grandchildren, Lyra and Declan Heitman, Liam, Rory and Finn Snyder, William and Sophia Luken, and Addy Snyder; sister, Yvonne Elsberry of Boone.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 28, 2024 at the Schroeder-Reimers Memorial Chapel at Sixth and Marshall Streets, with a Rosary to begin at 8:00 P.M. Donald J. Howard - September 28, 1948 - March 02, 2024

Departed: 03/02/2024 (Boone)
Obituary Preview: Donald Joe Howard of Boone, IA, died on March 2, 2024 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, IA. This ended his long and hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer, a disease he lived with for 5 years, surpassing every prognosis that his doctors gave him.
Don is survived by his sister, Karen Brady, nephews Ryan, Devin (Tara) and grandnephew Silas. He is also survived by his Aunt Evelyn and 17 cousins. Preceding him in death are his parents, Ross and Frances Howard, as well as his brother-in-law, Terrence Brady. Don had an older brother, Myron Howard, who died in infancy. Don was married twice, with both marriages ending in divorce.
Don was born September 28, 1948 in Marshalltown, IA. Growing up on a farm with his parents and his older sister Karen, Don remembered helping his dad run the farm, running with his dog, riding bicycles, playing with cousins and friends, and enjoying the freedom of farm life.
Don graduated from Green Mountain High School in 1966. He attended Marshalltown Community College for one year, then earned a bachelor’s degree from Mankato State College (now Minnesota State University, Mankato) in 1970 with a math education major and a physical education minor.
After graduating, Don began teaching and coaching in the Boone Community School District. Teaching is a family tradition – all four of the Howards (Frances, Ross, Karen, and Don) worked as teachers at some point in their lives.
In the 1970s, Don taught 7th and 8th grade math, as well as high school algebra and geometry. In 1984, he began teaching Computer Literacy. Don also started a more advanced computer programming course. His students learned the latest technology of the day: computer applications, touch typing, word processing, and eventually, the Internet. “Mr. Howard” was a steady presence in the lives of Boone schoolchildren, and he was proud to have taught long enough to have the children of former students in his classes.
Outside of the classroom, “Coach Howard” was a fixture in Boone athletics. Coaching was his biggest passion in life. He loved helping young people accomplish their goals and grow as people and athletes. He coached girls track for 34 years, serving the last 3 years as the varsity girls track coach. He was a girls basketball coach for 26 years, working as an assistant coach for the Toreadors varsity team that made the state tournament in 1989. He also coached boys track, boys basketball, and football. In addition to coaching, Don officiated basketball and volleyball for decades, and kept score for volleyball, basketball, and football games. To honor Don’s lifetime of service to Boone athletics, the annual Boone track meet was renamed the “Don Howard Invitational” in 2023.
Don was active with the Boone Educators Association, serving as president 3 times and working on contract negotiations with the school district for at least 15 years. Though he was known for his mild-mannered nature, Don was a tough negotiator. One year, in commemoration of a successful contract, Don’s fellow teachers gifted him with a belt buckle featuring a fire-breathing dragon.
Don retired from teaching in 2006 after 36 years and continued coaching track and field until 2023. Across his teaching and coaching careers, Don served the youth of Boone for 53 years. When he retired, the school district estimated that Don had taught 3,420 students and coached 2,219 athletes.
In addition to teaching and coaching, Don took on community leadership roles in Boone. He served on the Board of Directors of the Boone County Fair for 13 years, where his responsibilities included managing the finances of the fairgrounds. He also served on the steering committee of Pufferbilly Days and the board of the Boone County Community Credit Union. Don was a past member of the Boone Jaycees and Kiwanis Club.
In the summers, Don traveled widely. His favorite trips were long backpacking treks in the Montana wilderness. Closer to home, Don painted houses with a crew of fellow teachers, and also furthered his studies in education, taking classes from Iowa State, Drake University, and Bemidji State. He ran recreationally for many years, having completed many 10Ks and one marathon. He biked across Iowa on RAGBRAI twice. He loved doing puzzles, playing sudoku, watching old movies, and following college football and basketball.
Don loved his family, spending lots of time in Colorado with his sister and his nephews, who especially loved skiing with him. In October of 2023, despite being very ill, Don insisted on traveling to Colorado to meet his newborn grandnephew.

Obituary Preview: Our precious, beloved son Scott, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 26, 2024 at 23 years old. Scott was born to Michael Scott and DeAnna Lynn (Cassabaum) Fank on July 7, 2000 (almost en route) at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. He’s the second oldest of three loving siblings; Heidi Nichole, HolliAnna Marie, and Luke Michael. He was homeschooled through high school at L.P.J. Academy and graduated in May 2018. He then attended DMACC in Boone for one year. He completed his Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering at Iowa State University, excelling in his coursework and graduating suma cum laude in May 2023. While attending ISU, he interned at PowerFilm Solar in Ames and very much enjoyed learning under Brad Scandrett. In February of 2023, Scott traveled to Asan, South Korea where he completed two semesters of a foreign exchange program. He poured his energy into his language classes, becoming fluent in reading Korean and competent in speaking it. In addition to his Korean language classes, over the course of two semesters he was assigned thirteen Korean language partners who he met with weekly to help them learn English and became a good friend to many of them. Near the end of his stay in Asan, he was chosen for a two-week program where he assisted in teaching English to grade-school children.
Scott’s brief life on earth was characterized by a zeal for discovering and hands-on learning. He never wanted to learn for the sake of learning, he always wanted to master whatever he was interested in. He loved being creative; having a wide-range of interests including piano, guitar, drums, ukulele, electronics, explosives, 3D printing, auto mechanics, photography, cooking, and baking. He loved being active in sports and seemed to excel in whatever he set his mind to conquer; such as wake boarding, wake skating, snowboarding, volleyball, biking (including a unicycle), and juggling. Scott’s passionate, polite, kind, servant heart produced a love for mentoring and encouraging his siblings and everyone in his life.

The Lord Jesus captured Scott’s heart at an early age and he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior. Scott was baptized at Hidden Acres Christian Camp in June of 2007. His God-given competitive nature made Bible verse memorization fun and challenging at AWANA, and he received the Timothy Award.
On the day of Scott’s homegoing, he had been focusing on the following promise from Jesus: “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgement, but has passed from death into life,” John 5:24. We can rest assured that Scott is free from pain, suffering, and sin, resting in the love of our Savior and those of us who have put our trust in Him will be together for eternity.
