Obituary Preview: Marie Gertrude (Mansheim) Overberg, 91, came into the world on September 20, 1932, and left this world on May 9, 2024.
She was born the third child to Louis and Catherine Mansheim in Fort Madison, Iowa. Marie spoke fondly of growing up in Fort Madison, her paper route, working at Bishop’s Ice Cream and attending Catholic Central, where she made lifelong friends.
She met the love of her life, Adrian Overberg at a dance in West Point, Iowa. She traded her high heels for work boots and became a farm wife on February 6, 1954.
Together they raised nine children. She was a loving wife and mother, making every holiday special, especially Christmas and Easter, with many of the family traditions started, being continued today. She gave her children wings, encouraging them to find their own way, while letting them know home was always there. She rejoiced in each addition to the family, every wedding, grandchild and great grandchild was celebrated. Her grandchildren loved going to Grandma’s house where she always had their favorite cookie or homemade applesauce waiting. St. Louis Cardinals, college football, Wheel of Fortune, the Game Show Network and scratch offs will always be gentle reminders of her competitive spirit and active mind. She was also the smiling face behind the snack bar at Walmart in Mount Pleasant for many years.
Marie leaves behind a legacy built on faith, kindness and family including her nine children: Rose (Henry) Jennings, Ronald (Suzanne) Overberg, Teresa (Michael) Anderson, Victoria (David) Kokjohn, Angela (Tim) Budnik, Mark (Kim) Overberg, Paula (Mark Foudray) Case, David (Linda) Overberg and Nathan (Katie) Overberg; twenty-two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren; sisters: Shirley Hunold and Cathy (Wayne) Schwartz and one brother: Louis (Fran) Mansheim.

A tiny woman with a big heart, she reigned supreme over the family she and Adrian created and will be forever missed by those who knew and loved her.
A visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2024, at St. James the Less Catholic Church in St. Paul, where the family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A parish rosary will be recited at 3:30 p.m. and a Christian wake service will be held at 5:30 p.m. at the church.

Reed Ross Haeger, Jr. - July 28, 1945 - April 05, 2024

Departed: 04/05/2024 (West Point)
Obituary Preview: Reed Ross Haeger, 78, of West Point, Iowa, passed away at 8:24 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2024, at Birkwood Village in Fort Madison, Iowa, surrounded by his family.
Reed was born on July 28, 1945, in Oak Park, Illinois, the son of Reed “Ross” Haeger, Sr. and Mary (Phelan) Haeger. On August 10, 1968, he married Susan Teresa Hanley in Lewistown, Montana. She preceded him in death on January 15, 2024, after fifty-five years of marriage.
As a boy, Reed spent summers at his grandparents home outside of Rhinelander, Wisconsin at Haeger’s Lodge on Lake Thompson. Upon graduation from Fenwick High School in Oak Park, Reed spent a summer on the Whitetail Ranch outside of Missoula, Montana working as a ranch hand. This experience provided a lifetime of stories and a deep personal connection to the cowboy persona. Reed attended St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in education. Accepting a gift from his father upon graduation, Reed spent three months traveling Europe. Through a college roommate, he learned of and accepted a teaching position at Marquette High School in West Point where he would teach English for nine years. After teaching, Reed dabbled as a restaurateur managing the West Point Knights of Columbus, Donnellson Green Acres Golf Club and as owner/proprietor of Reed’s Pizza in West Point. He finished his full-time working career at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown after twenty years. Reed and Sue purchased the Corner Tap in 1983. In August of 2023, in fine West Point Sweet Corn Festival festive fashion, they celebrated forty years in business.
From area bass fishing tournaments to weekend fishing getaways with Sue, Reed was an avid fisherman. He transitioned from water to land in the game of golf, a pastime passion he renewed with a vengeance. His dedication and knowledge for the game was intense, perhaps even driving a patron or two out of the Corner Tap with his incessant talk of it! His love of reading was evidenced by the many books that went through his hands, thousands and thousands of pages turned. Reed had not only the gift of word crafting, but with those page turning fingers, he would use his woodworking craft to spend hours in his basement making gifts for family and friends, especially his grandkids. Reed was most proud of his family. Four children, thirteen grandchildren, two great grandchildren and counting… Always the teacher, always the storyteller, lighting up at the opportunity to share with them is what he loved best.
Reed is survived by his three daughters: Kathleen “Katie” (Chris) Dailey of Terre Haute, Indiana, Jennifer “Jenny” Steffensmeier (Randy Larson) of West Point, Megan (Bill) Kruse of West Point; son: Ross (Erin) Haeger of Burlington; thirteen grandchildren: Daniel Dailey, Jack Dailey, Claire Dailey, Isaac Steffensmeier (Courtney Abolt), Rachel Steffensmeier (Julian Holmes), Sarah (CJ) Richardson, Aaron (Taylor) Steffensmeier, Nathan Steffensmeier (Larissa Ferrill), Elton Kruse (Madelyn Swigart), Owen Kruse (Katie Beach), Emmett Kruse, Liam Haeger and Gordon Haeger; two great-grandchildren: Quincy and Calvin Richardson; three sisters: Beth (Paul) Reis of Wheaton, Illinois, Jane (Greg) Zimmerman of Downers Grove, Illinois, Anne Haeger of Marion, Iowa and one brother: Mark (Julie) Haeger of Downers Grove, Illinois.
Reed was preceded in death by his parents; sisters-in-law: Sister Kathleen Hanley, CHM, Laurie Voelker; brothers-in-law: Mark Hanley, Edward Hanley, Eugene Foecke and son-in-law: Ben Steffensmeier.
A visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2024,  at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point.
A time of remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday with Father Dan Dorau officiating at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the West Point American Legion after the burial. Following the luncheon, a celebration of life will be held at the Corner Tap.

Departed: 01/05/2024 (West Point)
Obituary Preview: Mary Jo Menke, 75, of Davenport, left this world on January 5, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with cancer.
Mary Jo was born on March 12, 1948 in Ft. Madison, Iowa, the first daughter of Linus and Betty Meierotto.   Mary Jo was united in marriage to Ben Menke on May 9, 1970 at Holy Family Catholic Church. Together they had four children: Tracy (Chad) Buhman, George (Carrie) Menke, Erin Menke, and Meredith (Michael) Ortega.  She was a loving grandma to eight grandchildren: Katie (Adam) Fitzsimmons, Kyle (Madi) Buhman, Cole Buhman, Brooke Menke, Camryn Menke, Josh McBride, Christian Behrens, and Peyton Behrens.  She was also blessed with two great-grandchildren: Rylee Buhman and Calvin Fitzsimmons and was excited to welcome her third great-grandchildren in April.  She was beloved by three siblings: Diane (Dennis) Dietzman, Mike Meierotto, and Kaye Lynn (Dirk) Jacobs.  All of her family were treasured by Mary Jo and was she was affectionately known as Grandma Jo.
When her children were young, Mary Jo had the privilege of being a stay-at-home mother for 20 years. She had a great love of animals her whole life starting with horses in her youth and later with family pets including caring for her children’s dogs/cats. She was a craftsperson like her mom and a gifted seamstress who made clothes, quilts, doll clothes, purses, etc. her whole life.  Besides being a mom, grandma, and great grandma, an amazing cook, and seamstress, Mary Jo had a twenty-one-year career as a respiratory therapist at Genesis Medical Center in Davenport.
Mary Jo had the strongest faith. When we learned of her diagnosis of bile duct cancer it was a shock to us that it progressed so quickly. She had her siblings praying the rosary every night and she was very proud of that. Every time anyone asked how she was feeling, she would always say “I’m fine”. She shared with us that ever since she was a little girl, she knew she would die from cancer and that it would hurt. She had no fear and was content to leave this world in hopes of soon seeing her Mom and Dad again and all of her pets.
Mary Jo was kind, gracious and giving. She knew what would make each member of her family happy and she provided it. When her Mom passed away 3 years ago, she stepped up to make the care packages that our Mom and Grandmother had made for all of us which included her exclusive pickles, canned beef and potholders along with cookies and pies. She gave us so much more than gifts with those packages. She gave a piece of herself every year and a memory of Mom and Grandma.
Growing up on a farm near West Point, Iowa brought a lot of joy and love of animals. There were many species of pets which included: dogs, cats, pigs, cattle, sheep, pigeons, parakeets, bunnies, skunks and horses. Above all, Mary Jo loved horses. Whenever she saw horses off in a field, her heart would swell. In her youth she rode horses all over the farm to play westerns and graze cattle. Her playground was enormous. Mary Jo never seemed angry. She was always mild mannered unless you rose with her in her van. Then the road rage would come out!!! She became a totally different person and everyone who rode with her kept their mouths shut!
Some of her wishes before she left were to see her cousins and her friends from the past again. Her family was able to grant her that wish by gathering at our grandpa’s home near St. Paul, Iowa.
A graveside service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Calvary Cemetery, West Point, Iowa with Father Dan Dorau officiating.
There will be a luncheon immediately following at the American legion in West Point. We invite all family and friends to join us in celebrating Mary Jo's life on Saturday, March 2nd and look forward to seeing as many of you as can make it.

They had four children of which she was immensely proud. She was relentlessly by Gene’s side. But she also loved playing cards and gambling at the casino (penny slots!) with Lucy and all her Red Hat friends. She did have an ornery side and could be a little feisty, especially at coffee (If that coffee pot could talk!). She had a particularly special relationship with her niece, Vicki, with whom she shared many laughs and a few tears.
She is mostly remembered for her capacity to love her husband and family. She was an amazing wife, mother, and grandmother and friend. Her beautiful smile will be greatly missed.
