Obituary Preview: Quietly with his family at his side, on Monday, October 19, 2020, John Robert Adams, 93, passed into life eternal.  Although John suffered a stroke a few months ago, he pressed on.  Ten days shy of his 94th birthday John succumbed to complications and entered into rest on October 19, 2020.  Greeting him with outstretched hands was his wife Marie Theresa who waited patiently 35 years for this reunion.  With them are their daughters, baby Marie and Michelle; as well as John’s parents, John Lawrence and Mary Agnes McGarey Adams his siblings, Mary Louise Smith, Anna Catherine Carroll, Thomas Joseph, Edward Francis, James Richard, and William Henry, and so many more of the family.

John was committed to his family, took great pride in his children, and always gave credit to Marie. He was never so content as he was at family gatherings. He retired from US Steel after more than 35 years of service, mostly in its Treasury Department.    John also volunteered with the USX Federal Credit Union serving on its supervisory committee for several decades.
Being the typical Irishman, John enjoyed a large, loving family and the company of many friends. He loved laughter and song, and could often be found singing with family, friends and barbershop quartets.
John possessed an unwavering faith, prayed the rosary daily and attended mass every day with the exception of the last few years.  He then began watching weekday mass on EWTN.  He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians Monroeville, the BPO Elks Braddock, and  he was a life member of the American Legion.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to inform friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a sense of closure and help to celebrate the life of the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary, although it can also be written by a funeral home or newspaper staff member.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, city of residence, and information about their family, such as spouse, children, grandchildren, and siblings. It may also include details about their occupation, hobbies, achievements, and military service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and help readers remember the person who has passed away.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department or website to find out their submission guidelines and deadlines. You may need to provide the text of the obituary, as well as payment information for any associated fees.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance, often as part of their estate planning or as a way to ensure that their life story is told accurately. This can be a unique opportunity to reflect on your life and legacy.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides a sense of the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

This depends on the publication or online platform. Some may allow corrections or revisions within a certain timeframe, while others may not permit changes once the notice has been published.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This varies depending on the online platform or website. Some may keep obituaries archived indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period of time.

Can I share an obituary on social media?

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to share an obituary on social media sites like Facebook or Twitter. This can be a convenient way to notify friends and family who may not see traditional newspaper notices.

What if I want to keep an obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce someone's passing, you can opt for a private or "family-only" obituary. This might be shared through email or other private channels rather than being published openly.

Can I include charitable donations in an obituary?

Yes! Many families choose to include information about charitable donations in lieu of flowers or other gifts. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased person's memory and support a cause they cared about.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers or websites that specialize in genealogy research. Local libraries or historical societies may also have archives of old newspapers that you can access.

Can I write an obituary for someone who died many years ago?
