Obituary Preview: Ray Conley, 99, of Petoskey, passed away on December 22, 2019.  He went to be with the Lord just 2 months shy of his 100th birthday.
Ray was born in Duluth, Minnesota to William and Emelda Conley, a Catholic family of 8.  Ray was baptized at St. Jean Baptiste, a French speaking Catholic church.  He graduated in 1937 in a class of 16 from St. Jean’s school.
Ray began his banking career in Duluth, graduated Univ. of Wisconsin’s banking school and in 1943 he joined the US Treasury Department, Comptroller of the Currency. He became a chief national bank examiner of the Ninth Federal Reserve District. Ray’s success as an examiner included discovery of major embezzlements which led to convictions.  However, his large district (from Michigan west to Montana), kept Ray on the road and away from his family.
In 1953 Ray was delighted to accept the offer from the Curtis family to become Cashier of the First National Bank of Petoskey.  Ray remained with the bank, becoming President and Chairman of the Board, and retiring in 1985.  He worked hard to serve, support and improve his community.  Ray worked tirelessly along with other community leaders to establish a hospital and a college and was a founding member of the Board of Directors of NCMC.
Ray was a man of strong Christian faith.  He was generous and caring, helping those in need, especially widows, but always quietly and without fanfare.  Ray was a friend to many, kept his promises, never spoke ill of others, and strictly kept confidences entrusted to him.
Ray was married to his wife Lois for 55 years when she passed away in 2007.  Ray and Lois had three children.  Ray is survived by his children Wallace (Debbie) Conley, Kathleen Meyers, Maureen Conley and granddaughters Amanda Meyers, Jamie (Keane) Palmer, and great grandchildren Henry Palmer and Ava Conley Palmer.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife Lois (89), granddaughters, Michelle Conley (11), and Caitlin Conley Abbatt (18mo); and by all of his siblings, including his youngest brother Don this year.
The family will receive friends at the Schiller Funeral Home in Harbor Springs on Friday, December 27th from 5-7pm.  The funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Childhood of Jesus Church of Harbor Springs at 2pm on Saturday, December 28th with visitation the hour prior.  A reception will follow at the Parish Hall.
Ray will be laid to rest on Monday, December 30th at Greenwood Cemetery with a committal service at 9am.

Marlene was born on December 7, 1935 in Harbor Springs, the daughter of Aubrey and Helen (Reed) Bradshaw and graduated from Harbor Springs High School.   Following high school, Marlene went to work as an Operator for Michigan Bell, working there for 12 years.
On June 6, 1964, she married Gayle Ray Bunker and the two made their home in Harbor Springs where they raised their son, Michael Bunker.  Gayle preceded Marlene in death after 41 years of marriage on February 24, 2006.
Marlene was a longtime volunteer at the Hiland Cottage in Petoskey and made lap blankets for both the VA Hospital in Gaylord and the Hiland Cottage.  She enjoyed yard work and various forms of crafts from quilting to pottery, to making lampshades and arranging flowers.  However, she was far from an average 80-year-old woman, as she was also quite adventurous.  She loved the looks she received when she drove her son's big truck, she learned to ride a motorcycle later in life, and last year drove a four-wheeler across the Mackinac Bridge.  She never missed the Semi Tractor Truck Show in St. Ignace or the Parade of Lights on the Mackinac Bridge and was always up for hopping in the car and going for a ride.
Services celebrating Marlene’s life will be held at the Schiller Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 6th at 11am with Rev. David Behling officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10am until the time of service.  Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.
Those wishing to honor Marlene’s memory are asked to make a donation to the American Cancer Society.

Why are obituaries important?

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to fill out.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include information about memorial services, donations, or other ways to honor the deceased.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. It's best to check with the publication or platform for specific guidelines.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

Contact the newspaper or online platform directly to find out their submission process and deadlines. Some may have online forms or email addresses for submissions, while others may require phone calls or in-person visits.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some may charge by the word or line, while others may have flat fees or package deals. Be sure to ask about pricing when submitting your obituary.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help capture the personality and spirit of the deceased.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If there are sensitive issues or controversies surrounding the deceased's life or death, it's best to approach these topics with tact and discretion. Consider consulting with other family members or friends before deciding what to include.

How long after death should an obituary be published?

The timing of publishing an obituary varies depending on cultural and personal preferences. Some families prefer to publish immediately after death, while others may wait until after funeral services or at a later date.

Can I update an obituary after it's been published?

How do I preserve an obituary for future generations?
