Richard Randall Warmack - September 23, 1924 - February 16, 2024

Departed: 02/16/2024 (Oroville)
Obituary Preview: RICHARD RANDALL WARMACK Richard Randall Warmack, born September 23,1924, and lifetime Oroville resident, passed February 16, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was a loving husband, devoted father, joyous grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be missed by them all. Richard led an amazing life, living to 99 years 4 months and 24 days. He graduated from Oroville High School after which he served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II. As a Radio Operator in the JASCO unit, 4th Division in the Pacific, Richard fought in the battles of Roi and Namur, Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian, and lastly Iwo Jima. After the war, Richard returned to Oroville and became a partner in the family store, “Warmack’s”, with his father Randall. Richard took over entirely in the early 70’s, shepherding it through many economic shifts and the ever-changing consumer landscape by focusing on customer experience and adjusting his offerings. Richard was a leader in the Downtown Merchants Association until his retirement in 1989 and a Past President of the Oroville Exchange Club. In 1963, Richard married his beloved Jane and became cherished and appreciated father to Jane’s four children in addition to his daughters Rhonda and Candis whom he loved dearly. Richard was a relentlessly curious man and loved reading the Wall Street Journal, Discover Magazine, Scientific American, National Geographic, Consumer Reports, and any book or magazine related to his current interest. Whatever he was interested in, he went full tilt and loved sharing his knowledge and creativity. He was an avid chess and tennis player. He dabbled in water color painting (helpful when his daughter needed inspiration in high school art class). He dove into sailing (with first mate, Jane), motorcycle riding, computers, woodworking, and even made his own arrows when teaching his son archery. He was an audio geek, and in the 60’s, made his own stereo speakers and wired the entire house so music could be played anywhere by
flipping a switch for the desired room. Richard also became an outstanding photographer (turning one of the “clutter closets” into a darkroom for developing his own pictures), and started his own photo card company, “Warmack’s Photographic Adventures.” His cards featured his own and his wife’s beautiful photographs of the local Butte County area and their beloved Tahoe, which were sold locally and all around Lake Tahoe. Some of his photos went on to become dramatic enlargements that grace the walls of several homes. Richard had a wonderful sense of humor and could always make people laugh with his quick wit, which he never lost, even on his last day: When the nurse asked him if he needed anything, he said “I would like some wine, just a small amount.” Unfortunately, the nursing staff did not have any, so a nurse gave him a sip of water. His response was, “That’s not wine!” and chuckled. Richard is preceded in death by his father and mother, Randall Edward Warmack and Florence Josephine Richardson Warmack, as well as his younger brother, Lorence “Larry” Ben Warmack. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jane Warmack; six children and their spouses: Catherine (Francisco), Joan (Charles), Carl (Pamela), and Willow (David); two daughters from his first marriage: Rhonda and Candis; 14 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; and two nephews Mark Warmack and Jay Warmack. Richard’s nephew, Mark, in a testament to Richard’s legacy said, “He is a great man, a very strong role model. A monument to humility, wisdom, and grace... and we were all so lucky to have him.” A memorial service will be held at the Grey Fox Vineyards in Oroville at 2:30 pm on Friday, April 5.

Obituary Preview: On 9/28/1927 Wanda Juanita Mathis Chilton was born in Pittsburg, KS as a member of the Cherokee tribe. When she was Two years old The Great Depression hit and shortly after The Dust Bowl happened. She became an "Okie,” which is a term for the very poor migrants from Oklahoma, also being a woman, and Native American life seemed to promise nothing but struggle.  She experienced and lived through times most of us only heard about from our history books such as: WWII, The Cold War, the end of Segregation (Civil Rights), the coronation of Queen Elizabeth. Television/color television, Voting Rights Act which gave Native Americans the right to vote in 1965 (she would have been 38 years old at this time) and so much more. Through her 96 years on Earth she remained a kind and loving person. She was always in a positive mood and valued family MOST. All she ever wanted was for her family to be together. She could often be heard saying "As long as you have a roof over your head, some food, and gas in your car to go somewhere you got it made." She did not care about, or focus on fancy things. She held tight to her Native heritage and traditions. Native American beadwork was a passion of hers. She had 3 children, 8 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. To everyone she met, she became “grandma.” She made everyone feel welcome at her home, and you couldn't leave without eating something. In the early moments of the new year, she decided that 96 years had been long enough and it was time to go home.

Miranda is a local nurse, Gabrielle is a activities assistant at a local SNF, Chantel is attending Butte College and Olivia is a senior in high school. Edith and her husband Bill lived locally in Palermo, Edith taught many kids in Sunday School and helped as much as she could as her local church. Edith and Bill had many animals on their farm over the years and enjoyed living the farm life. They were married for years, Bill was from Arkansas and passed away October of 2018. Edith enjoyed her last years living next to her daughter Carolyn. They attended a local sewing group with the church ladies and Edith continued to attend her local church until her health declined so much she was unable, but would listen weekly. Edith spent the last year and half with her daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughters at home caring for her. Close friends and family visiting her at home. Edith chose to live her last days under the care of family members and a wonderful hospice team caring for her. Until her very last days on the days she could barely speak saying “Rejoice in the Lord” still saying her prayers as she had lost her vision when she would hear the clock ring for the new hour. Edith passed with her granddaughter and daughter by her side until the very end on November 11,2023. As i write this with tears in my eyes, remembering all the wonderful memories. Of all the horses I got to ride at their house, or all the baby animals me and my grandparents bottle fed or watching my daughters have the same excitement when they saw the palm trees at the end of the road as we got close to Grandma and Grandpa of palermo. I know the prize that she got when she got to heaven for all the acts of her faith were greatly rewarded!
1 Thessalonians 5:16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
