Obituary Preview: Alice R. Heintzelman, 95, formerly of Lehighton, died May 18, 2024, at Maple Shade Meadows in Nesquehoning. Born in Palmerton, Alice was the youngest daughter of the late Claude J. and Jennie M. (Zimmerman) Heintzelman.
Alice resided in Lehighton in the same house for 86 years. She began working at the age of 14 at the G.C. Murphy Store during WW II. After graduating from Lehighton High School in 1947, Alice was employed as a bookkeeper at Peerless Mills (Drumheller’s Mill) in Lehighton, for the Penn Northeast Conference of the United Church of Christ in Palmerton, and finally for Blue Ridge Pressure Casting in Lehighton, retiring in 1991.
Alice was a loyal member of Zion UCC, Lehighton, where she sang in the church choir and volunteered as a church bookkeeper. She was a skillful seamstress and for many years made the costumes for the Zion Opera Workshop productions. She also was an accomplished quilter with the church’s Daughters of Zion quilting group, and a renowned pie baker.
Alice is survived by 6 nieces and nephews, 10 great nieces and nephews, and 10 great-great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and three sisters, Helen Stemler, Kathryn Noll, and Louise Heintzelman. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, May 23rd at Zion UCC 2nd and Iron Streets, Lehighton, with Reverend Dean Frey officiating; a calling will precede the service from 10:30-11 AM in the church. The Committal will be private. Obituary Preview: Susan Rhoads-Procina, 66, of East Penn Township, passed to eternal life on May 6, 2024, and was reunited with her husband, Harry J. Procina, who passed away on December 10, 2023, after 25 years of marriage.
Sue was born in Gnaden Huetten Hospital on February 5, 1958. She was the daughter of George W. and the late Joan (Weaver) Rhoads.
She was a 1976 graduate of Lehighton Area High School. Sue went on to further her education, graduating in 1998 from Lehigh Carbon Community College (AAS), in 2003 from Muhlenberg College (BA), and in 2011 from Desales University (MBA). She worked in the accounting field for 20 years, finishing her career as an employee of Carbon County.
Sue was a past Girl Scout leader. She was a past member of Zion Opera Workshop. She was a past President and Treasurer of the Unit 314 Legion Auxiliary, Lehighton.
Sue was a current member of Ben Salem UCC, Andreas, where she was a member of the Bell Choir.
Surviving is a son, Jason Moulthrop, and his wife, Eliza Billes, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and a daughter, Jamie Moulthrop, and her wife, Stephanie Moulthrop, of Emmaus, PA. Sue had four grandchildren: Callen Walck of Emmaus, Gordon Moulthrop of Toronto, Greta Moulthrop of Toronto, and Cardyn Moulthrop of Emmaus.
Sue is also survived by her father, George Rhoads (Jean) of Lehighton, a brother, Steven Rhoads (Cindy) of McMichaels, a sister, Sandra Haffner (Tom) of Cincinnati, and two nephews, Nathaniel Rhoads (Lydia) and Jacob Mortensen.
In addition to her mother, Joan Rhoads, Sue was predeceased by her grandparents Harvey and Mary Rhoads and Ernest and Marion Weaver. Celebration of Life service with Pastor Randy Lentz officiating will be held at 11 a.m. on May 18, 2024, at Ben Salem UCC 1965 Church Hill Road Lehighton, PA, a calling hour will precede the celebration of life service from 10-11 AM in the church. The Committal will be held at the convenience of the family at Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at a later date. Obituary Preview: Doris M. Fronheiser, 90, of Weatherly and formerly of Lehighton, passed away on Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Forest Hills Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Weatherly. She was the wife of the late Raymond Fronheiser.
Born on August 26, 1933, in Mahoning Township, she was the daughter of the late Franklin and Hilda (Fritz) Gilbert. She was a graduate of Lehighton Area High School.
Doris was an integral part of their family-owned business, Gilbert’s Meats, in Mahoning Township for many years.
She was a member St. John’s Lutheran Church, Mahoning Twp., where she served as a nursery and Sunday school teacher, sang on the church choir and was always willing to volunteer when needed.
Doris loved going to yard sales, gardening, bird watching and attending races in Middletown, NY.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna wife of Bob Hall of Lehighton, granddaughter, Stacy w/o Craig Rex Jr., great-grandsons, Craig III and Hunter Rex, and brother Neil Gilbert husband of Kay of Lehighton. She was predeceased by her sons, Howard “Homer” and Alan Fronheiser and brother, Dean Gilbert.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, May 10th at 11 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church 826 Mahoning Drive West Lehighton with Reverend Tony Pagotto officiating, calling from 10-11 AM prior to the service. Maureen R. Eckman - July 27, 1930 - April 21, 2024

Obituary Preview: Maureen Ruth Eckman, 93, died Sunday April 21 in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Born July 27, 1930, she was the youngest child of Russell D. and Sarah Irene Miller of Lehighton, Pennsylvania. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in New Mahoning and graduated in 1948 from Lehighton High School, where she was freshman class president. Following high school, she graduated from Allentown Business School and worked in the office of the New Jersey Zinc Company in Palmerton until 1954. In 1953 she married her high-school sweetheart, James (“Jim”) Eckman, and the couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary before his death in 2019.
While raising three daughters, Maureen volunteered as an assistant leader in Girl Scouts, Good News Club, and Vacation Bible School. She was a reading tutor, bowled with the Tea Timers league, and was a member of Christian Women’s Club in Lehighton. She belonged to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mahoning as a child and young adult, attended Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church in Lehighton in the 1970s, and became an early member of Christ Evangelical Free Church when the congregation began meeting in her brother’s garage. She remained active in that church and sang in the choir for twice-annual cantatas until moving to Dover, Pennsylvania in 2005 to be closer to her grandchildren. While living in Dover, she attended Church of the Open Door in York and sang in a choir there.
Maureen loved children, dogs, and chocolate. She was a kindhearted and thoughtful woman who got along well with others and enjoyed gathering with family and friends to eat or play games. She and Jim traveled frequently and saw much of the lower 48 states by car and RV. They spent more than a decade of winters in Florida, including several years at Hawthorne Village in Leesburg, and stopped at Ocean Lakes Campground in Myrtle Beach for two weeks each year on their way south.
Later in their life together, Maureen and Jim lived in Dover and at Cross Keys Village in New Oxford. As a widow, Maureen lived for five years at Country Meadows in Hershey. In addition to her parents and husband, Maureen’s daughter, Shawn Sipe, granddaughter, Emily Sipe, and brothers Glenn E. and Burton Miller died before her. She is survived by her older sister, Loise Pinkerton Fritz of Lehighton; her daughters Sheila Eckman (partner of Berneta Walraven) of Vashon, Washington, and Shannon Christman (wife of Mark) of Hershey; grandchildren Sarah Coates (wife of Tyson), Alex Christman, and Danica Christman; great-grandchildren Evelyn Coates and Henry Coates; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, April 26th at 10:30 AM at Christ Evangelical Free Church 2420 Blakeslee Blvd Drive West Lehighton, PA with Pastor Nick Mance officiating, Committal Service to follow at Sky-View Memorial Park in Hometown. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 9:30-10:30 AM at the church. She was a 1971 graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School in Haddonfield, NJ and a graduate of Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology and Mental Health.
Deborah loved working and helping people at the Mental Health Department of Mount Sinai Hospital in Philadelphia for many years.
She enjoyed painting, gardening, photography, and was a Ballet dancer and teacher.
She is survived by her life partner, daughter, Marni Egan of West Penn Twp., son, Mark Egan of San Francisco, CA, stepsons, Philip Freda Jr. of Los Angeles, CA and Matthew Freda of Philadelphia, grandchildren, Christopher Martino and Brenna Long and sister, Denise Lehman of Long Beach Island, NJ. Born May 2, 1935, in Allentown, she was the daughter of the late Lester and Glenna (Nester) Garloff. She was a graduate of Allen High School in Allentown.
Barbara worked as a cook for St. Mary’s Villa in Elmhurst until her retirement. She previously worked in the accounting department at Woolworths in Philadelphia, Dettra Flags, owner with her husband of Pappy’s Carpets in Phoenixville and the Country Store in Gouldsboro.
She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lehighton.
Barbara was a talented seamstress, loved crafting and spent many days at craft fairs, playing cards and camping.
She is survived by her daughters, Cindy Hess of Altoona and Karen wife of Forrest Shaffer of Lehighton, grandchildren, Ryan Kulp, Thomas Bullock, Danielle Hess and Morgan Shaffer, great-grandson, Cooper Bullock and brother, James Garloff of Emmaus. She was predeceased by her daughter, Donna Jane Bullock. Luke’s Hospital. He is the loving husband to his wife of 53 years, Betty Joan. He was born in Philadelphia on May 23, 1944. He was raised by powerful women who helped him become the incredible man he was; his mother, Charlotte Gormley, his aunt, Ruth Schneider, his grandmother, Leticia Donnelly, and sister Charlotte Pierno. On top of this, he was also the father to three amazing daughters, Jennifer Ann and her husband Dave,”the son he never had”, Kathleen Elizabeth “The Golden Child” (Doug) and Cynthia Suzanne (Tom). He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Tomko, and his cousins, Barry and Dot Schneider, Elaine and Doug Allman and Geri & Maury Luff, and their families. He also has Scott Carroll, who was like a son. He was a
graduate of the Class of 1962 from Woodrow Wilson High School in Levittown, PA. Grandpa was also blessed with 13 wonderful grandchildren who made him laugh and smile all the time! Lauren, Donald, David, Josh, Trevor, Maxwell, Joey, Zoey, Jami, Marissa, Kiera, Lauren and Madison! He also had the joy of having 7 great grandbabies: Fey, Harle, Juliette,
Kolt, Khaleesia, Kyla, and Kadence. Joe had a magnetic personality and was loved and respected by so many people! His smile would light up the room and his laugh was contagious! After living 60 plus years in Levittown, he and Betty moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin, living with their daughter and grandkids, enjoying a great decade of becoming Packer shareholders, lifelong Packer fans, and becoming a board member of the National Railroad Museum! He was an avid train enthusiast and lived the dream of being the Polar Express Conductor for quite a few years! They returned to Pennsylvania in
2015 and lived in Collegeville and Lehighton with their other daughters and grandkids. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. He was a 4th degree Knight of Columbus, and a proud shareholder of the Green Bay Packers. GO PACK GO! Obituary Preview: Stewart E. Miller, of Lehighton, PA, passed away on the morning of March 21st, 2024. He was 70 years old.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Miller of Belmont, MA, son Norman DeRemer and family of Allentown, PA, and his loving companion of nine years, Marsha Vaclavik of Lehighton, PA.
A lifelong railroader, working for many outfits in the Northeastern part of the country, his reputation preceded him wherever he went. Many would say Stew seemed like the meanest man they'd ever met, but it never took long for that initial impression to fall away. His many friends and colleagues remember him as a funny, generous, and reserved man, with an encyclopedic knowledge of the rail system and a love for good books, as a keen observer of the sky and weather, and as a talented artist making HO scale layouts and equipment. Additionally, he was a dedicated member of the Lehigh Valley Veterans Association, often paying for the dues of other members and the annual door prizes, and not accepting reimbursement.
There will be no formal service, the family requests you remember Stew in your own way, preferably by gently annoying a small cat or dog, or admiring a good thunderstorm.

He was a 1976 graduate of Palmerton Area High School, where he was a member of the Wrestling(4 years) and Track and Field Teams. His proudest accomplishment was his Gold Medal in the Southeastern Regional Class B Wrestling Tournament in 1974, which placed him in the State Wrestling Championship Tournament.
He attended and graduated from Lehigh County Community College in 1978 with an associate degree in Chemical Technology.
Todd worked as a Purchasing Agent for Structural Metal Fabricators, Inc, in Palmerton from 2016 until his retirement. Previously, he worked at Mack Trucks in Macungie and Kovatch Mobile Equipment in Nesquehoning.
He was a member of Mauch Chunk Rod and Gun Club, Beaver Run Rod and Gun Club, Zinc City Motorcycle Club and High Mtn. Dirt Bike Riders.
Todd loved riding motorcycles, snowmobiles, boating and drag racing.
He is survived by his girlfriend, Wendy Heffner of Reading, son, Dana Mertz of Lehighton, brothers, Barry husband of Beverly of Lehighton, Rick husband of Joan of Palmerton and Randy husband of Deborah of Danielsville, nieces and nephews, Tracey, Rachel wife of Jeffrey, Steven husband of Jen, Brooke wife of Patrick, Brent husband of Brittani, and Josh husband of Marisa, great nieces and nephews, Katie, Isabelle, Wesley, Violetta, Bryson, Brody, Zoe, and Callan. On June 20, 1970, Melodie married her high school sweetheart the late Darryl Klotz and they were married for 34 years until his passing in 2004. Born June 26, 1951, in Lehighton, she was the daughter of the late Melvin and Ruth (Fisher) Storm.
She was a 1969 graduate of Lehighton Area High School and served as the reunion class Treasurer.
She was an active member of the former St. Peter’s E.C. Church in Weissport, where she served many roles including children’s teacher, secretary of the missionary society and church secretary.
Melodie enjoyed gardening and tending to her flowers, taking photos, watching and feeding the birds, and especially loved spending time with her family and friends.
Melodie will be remembered as a loving and generous wife, mom, daughter, sister, and Nannie. Her kindness, grace and friendship will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her children, Michael Klotz of Lehighton, Jeneen wife of Anthony Donadeo of Mt. Laurel, NJ, and Jillian wife of Kevin Flintosh of Orefield, brother, Melvin Storm Jr. of FL, sister, Melinda wife of Timothy Nothstein of Lehighton, grandchildren, Zackary Klotz, Gianna and Alyssa Donadeo, Cody, Connor and Carissa Flintosh, nieces, and nephews. Jeff was born on August 14th, 1958, to Parker Biery and Ida (Oun) Scholdice in Allentown, PA. After he graduated from Jim Thorpe Area Vocational Technical School, he continued his education with an associate’s degree from Williamsport Area Community College in Heavy Equipment Operations.
After graduating he started his first job at Balliet Trucking, followed by Liquid Carbonic as a truck driver. He ended his career as a technician with Linde Corp. formerly known as Praxair.
In 1984, he married his first wife, Lisa (Long) Walck. They went on to have two daughters, Jazmin and Taylor.
In 2003, he married his current wife, Debra (Neff) Biery. He became a bonus Dad to her three sons, Kirk, Kipp, and Kreg Henritzy.
In Jeff’s free time he enjoyed golfing, playing scat, watching YouTube videos, visiting wineries, and spending time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife Deb; daughters Jazmin (Joesph), Taylor Aldinger (Mitchell); stepsons Kirk (Rita), Kipp (Nicole), and Kreg (Hannah); grandchildren Wyatt and June Aldinger, and Otto Henritzy; Mother Ida Scholedice (Clarence); brothers Mark Biery (Jill) and Christopher Biery (Brenda); sister Diane Kibler (Godfrey); and his many nieces and nephews. Jeff is predeceased by his father, Parker Biery, stepmother, Margaret Biery, and niece, Ciara Kibler. Born on January 21, 1941, in Tamaqua, he was the son of the late Charles and Ethel (Wessner) Urban. He was a 1958 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School, after high school he served in the US Army from 1958-1961.
Following his service, he graduated and was class Valedictorian of the former Franklin School of Science and Arts in Philadelphia with a degree in Medical Technology.
Charles was the director of Laboratory services at Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital for over 40 years.
He was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Mahoning Township, member of the Lehighton Masonic Lodge #621 and a former Cub and Boy Scout Leader.
Charles loved traveling the world with his late wife, Diann, attending the monthly GHMH retirees’ luncheons, but especially loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, whom he adored.
He is survived by his son, Greg Urban husband of Kathy of Tamaqua, Daughters, Kristin wife of Dan Butz of Lehighton and Melissa wife of Troy Hartman of Andreas, Sisters, Deanna Fannock and Charlotte wife of Dave Houser both of Tamaqua, grandchildren, Dr. Taylor Urban, Tanner Matsago, Tyler and Emily Butz and TJ Hartman, great-granddaughter, Mayrn Matsago, nieces, nephews, and canine companion Gordon. Louisa was active in the community, serving on both the Lehighton Area School District and CCVTI Boards of Education for many years, including several terms as Board President. She was also a tennis coach for the newly formed Lehighton High School Tennis Team. Athletics were a large part of Louisa’s life. An avid tennis player, golfer, scuba diver, and (sometimes) skydiver, she was always on the move. She was the tennis singles champion of both MVCC and Maple Tree Inn Tennis Club and as a golfer she achieved two holes in one. She was a member of the Mountain City Scuba Diving Club and Above the Poconos Skydivers. She also enjoyed photography, card games, and traveling.
Louisa was the wife of the late Dr. John E. Steele and the daughter of the late Charles Parker and Eva (Walker) Smyth. She is survived by her sisters Patricia (wife of Jon Hlafter) and Lynn (wife of the late Robert Olszewski), daughter Jennifer (wife of Craig Gilham) of Fair Play SC, son John Steele and his wife Michelle of Atlanta GA, grandsons Matthew and Benjamin, and several nieces and nephews.

Emma E Snyder - July 01, 1933 - December 16, 2023

Obituary Preview: Emma Evelyn (Wertman) Snyder, 90, was taken into God's kingdom on December 16th, 2023. She was born to Clarence Wertman and Jennie (Kistler) Wertman in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest of four children: sister, Leah Wertman (Fritz), half-sister, Hilda Kistler (Stahler), and half-brother, Miles Kistler. She was raised on the family farm with her parents and three siblings and graduated from Tamaqua High School.
Emma graduated in 1955 from St. Luke's School of Nursing where she also received a Nursing Excellence Award from the Obstetrics division. During her nursing career, she worked at Allentown State Hospital, in the private practice of Dr. Marvin Snyder in Lehighton, and at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
She married Gordon Thomas "Tom" Snyder in 1955 at St. John's UCC in Mahoning Valley. They had two children: a son, Bruce, and a daughter, Ann.
Tom and Emma later moved from Mahoning Valley to Hershey, PA. Emma worked as a nurse at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. They joined Derry Presbyterian Church and were both active members there. Following retirements, they sold their Hershey home and moved back to the home area -- first to Macungie and later to Mahoning Valley -- where they became members of Ben Salem United Church of Christ.
In their later years, Emma and Tom moved closer to family in Lancaster County, where Gordon died in 2018. Shortly thereafter Emma moved into the Masonic Village Retirement Community in Elizabethtown. Her daughter Ann was by her side when she passed, and she was attended to by the staff, loving friends, and by her five grandchildren (her pride and joy!). Those left to cherish her memory include her two children and their spouses: Bruce/Melanie (Lititz PA) and Ann/Mark (Virginia Beach VA), five grandchildren and spouses: Eric/Christina Snyder, Hannah Snyder, Catherine "Catie"/Andrew Shelton, Sarah Pavilack and Jon Pavilack. Emma also had 4 great-grandchildren: Weston, Reece, Elle, and Frances. This past summer we celebrated Emma's 90th birthday at Masonic Village.
She built her life around her husband, her children, and her grandchildren. She took enormous pride in the achievements of each of them. She was also proud of her nursing education and career. and making crafts for her Family and Friends. Surviving Eldora is her daughter Nadine Snyder and two sisters, LaRue Fink of Andreas and Teena Miller of Maryland and a wonderful group of 28 nieces and nephews.
