Helen was born on 13 February 1943 in Houston, Texas to James Earl and Elizabeth (Elsie) Wilkie.
Helen graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in Fine Arts and initially went on to teach in the Houston area elementary school system like her mother (no fun having your parent as a teacher…especially in the days of corporal punishment).  To pay the bills, she took up drafting and went on to have a long career working with architects and engineers putting their ideas onto paper and leaving her fingerprint on numerous cities throughout the United States.  All the while she enjoyed being outdoors, pursuing art and growing plants.
Helen was active in the community no matter where she lived.  While she lived here in the Tularosa Basin, she shared her talents in lapidary and silver smiting at the Alamogordo Senior Center.  She also belonged to the local rock hounding club and Otero Master Gardeners to help fuel her passion for the arts, being outside and sharing with others. Her fellow master gardeners sent a condolence that embodies what she meant to them and the community: “She was an absolutely wonderful person, gracious and sincere and had a great love for every aspect of gardening.  She was helpful, understanding and patient with those who asked her for help or advice.  She will be greatly missed.”
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Lee Powell and Michelle Zeisset of La Luz NM, her sister-in-law Liz Wilkie of Huntington, Texas along with Liz’s extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Elsie Willkie; and her brother Lawrence Alber Wilkie.

Kira Brittany Davis - September 21, 1991 - March 28, 2022

Departed: 03/28/2022 (Alamogordo)
Obituary Preview: Kira, our precious, sweet girl went to be with God March 28, 2022, at her home in High Rolls. Kira was born in Alamogordo on September 21, 1991, to Raymond and Kathy Davis of Mayhill. She was our only little girl.  She came to our family to two older brothers, Janscen Davis of High Rolls, and Chris Davis of Mayhill. She was followed by another brother, Rylan Davis of Mayhill.  One girl in the middle of those boys made Kira a tough little girl.  She finally became a girly girl in high school. But she was always tough, and to the point and did not put up with anyone’s attitudes.  Kira graduated from Cloudcroft High School in 2010.  At the time of her death, she was working for the Cloudcroft Historical Society; and she absolutely loved her job, as she was so interested in history of the area, especially trains and logging. She always told us she wanted to find a “logger” like her daddy to marry.  She found that in Daniel Hewitt, her soul mate. Dan and her kids were Kira’s whole life.  Dan brought with him his kids, Korin and Jayden Hewitt plus an amazing and supportive mother-in-law, Janice Hewitt. Kira took to mothering those kids like an expert. Jackson Hewitt was born to Kira and Dan January 31, 2015. He was her heart, as she often said. Kira loved her children unconditionally.  Kira was a partner to Dan, but her love was being a mom to those three kids.  She loved teaching all three to cook different things. Kira was a fantastic cook and could outcook her mom many times over.
Kira is survived by her soul mate/husband Daniel Hewitt, her sons Jackson Hewitt, and Jayden Hewitt; and her daughter Korin Hewitt; her parents Raymond and Kathy Davis, mother-in-law Janice Hewitt, her brothers, Janscen who was Kira’s favorite hunting buddy, killing the biggest elk in the mountains at that time; Chris who was Kira’s almost equal in the knowledge of music; and Rylan Davis who was Kira’s partner in crime and almost twin. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Gwyneth Davis, Tabitha Davis, and Jenee Davis. They were her friends and sisters she never had.  Kira loved kids. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Madaleine and Broden Davis of High Rolls, Anna-Lee Davis of Mayhill, and Rambler Davis or Mayhill. Kira was the ultimate aunt that her nephews and nieces will never forget.   Kira also has two living grandparents that survive her, Faye Davis of Mayhill and Fred Griffin of Mayhill.  Kira is also survived by so much extended family that loved her; too many to mention here, aunts, uncles, and cousins.  Kira was pre-deceased by her Memom, Marie Griffin and her grandpa, Bill Davis.
Our daughter was taken much too soon and will never be forgotten. She will live on in her parents, children, soul mate, her brothers, her in laws and nephews and nieces. She will be in her parents’ hearts always. Services will be Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at 1:00 pm at the James Canyon Cemetery for family and friends.  Please no flowers, as Kira was a mountain girl all the way. She loved the mountains and would prefer to just be where wildflowers and trees grow. Pall bearers will be her brothers, Janscen, Chris, and Rylan Davis; uncles Danny and Billy Davis, and her daddy that loved her so very much, Raymond Davis.  Honorary pall bearer is Daniel Hewitt, Kira’s logger love of her life!
Kira touched so many lives on this mountain that it is impossible to cover it all.  Our baby girl will live on in her babies, her parents and her brothers and Dan.

Sue Watkins - March 02, 1939 - March 11, 2022

Departed: 03/11/2022 (Alamogordo)
Obituary Preview: Sue Watkins March 2, 1939-March 11, 2022
Sue Watkins, formerly Sue Van Winkle, of La Luz passed away on March 11, 2022, after suffering a stroke.  Friends and family surrounded her with love.
Her former husbands, Jerry Watkins and Al Van Winkle, both of Alamogordo, her parents, Earl and Ann Stratton, and sister, Judy Farrow, predeceased Sue.
Her four children and their spouses, Don & Colene Van Winkle of Boulder, CO, Kathy and Jerry Miller of Mayhill, NM, Judy and Jeff Rabon of Alamogordo, NM, and Laurie and Chuck DeWolf of La Luz, NM, survive her.
Sue’s pride and joy apart from her children were her grandchildren and great grandchildren.   Molly Priebe, Judd Priebe, Garett Miller (Marisela) and son Gabriel, Andy DeWolf (Michele), Chase Rabon (Laura) and son Arlo, Travis Rabon (Natalie), Kevin DeWolf (Marisa) and daughter Ivy, Katie Jones (Kyle) and daughters Lorelei and Dakota, and Stacy Jones (Derek).  Sue’s marriage to Jerry Watkins, whom she called the love of her life, in 1995 arrived with a second family, all of whom she embraced as her own:  Kay and Tommy Standefer, Steve and Karen Watkins. Jan and Brett Toohey, David Watkins, and Kelly Watkins.
Sue’s life was enriched with the relationship she had with her best friend/sister, Jean Stratton and family of Santa Fe, NM.  The Stratton sisters raised and loved each other’s children like their own.  Kevin, John, Jennifer, Ron, (passed in 2014) and Don are cherished members of Sue’s family.
Sue was born in Portales, NM on March 2, 1939 to Earl and Ann Stratton.  Being the middle of three daughters and true to the middle child’s role, she was a bit impulsive, imaginative, a creative daredevil, and peacemaker.   That combination of traits continued in her adult life, evolving around passions and again, wrapped in her purpose of serving others.    As children, the Stratton sisters were heavily influenced by their Grandmother who lived next door, Ethel Hunter. Sue always credited her Grandmother for eliciting and drawing out her unique take on life and purpose while on the planet.
Sue married her sweetheart from Portales High School, Al Van Winkle, in 1955 and together raised four children.   The young couple worked hard together and in 1972 opened The Butcher Shop on Indian Wells Road in Alamogordo.  Sue managed all administrative and accounting as the entire family worked shoulder to shoulder to elevate this fledgling venture from start up to a success that eventually served as the capital source for the six store Van Winkle’s IGA grocery operation, that today operates as Lowe’s.  A family bond that only comes from working shoulder to shoulder with all members of our family was forged during the Butcher Shop years that Sue, in predictable fashion, nurtured.
Sue was a life long volunteer, embracing each passion to serve with her whole being.   In 1967, during the Civil Rights movement, Sue sought permission to start a Girl Scout Troop, Troop 2, operating out of a new Methodist Church that straddled an unspoken line in Alamogordo that separated white from black and brown.  Troop 2 became a phenomenon that was rare in southern New Mexico: a dynamic and racially mixed group of young women who at an early age became best friends, co-volunteers and extensions of how we should treat one another as fellow humans, irrespective of color or where we lived.   Perhaps by providence or maybe coincidence, Troop 2’s role in the subsequent merging of the two junior high schools in town, postured these young women to model for others the acceptance, love, and respect they felt for one another.  Sue always smiled with quiet pride when she heard about those young woman’s later lives and successes. Organizations and roles Sue served and believed in included Casa, Friends of Camp Mary White, Hospice volunteer, election poll worker of Otero County, Civil Rights Activist, Sunday school teacher at Grace Methodist Church, Girl Scout Leader, Cub Scout Leader, and PTA Volunteer.   Her quick mind, love for others, and community presence, all combined and inevitably spawned new forums of service and volunteerism.  At one point in her late seventies, as she was going back to volunteer for Hospice, her children, in a half serious/half kidding manner requested that she take a line from AA by saying,  “Hi, my name is Sue and I am a habitual volunteer.” At Sue’s request, her family will hold a celebration of her life in her beautiful orchard in La Luz, when “it is warm and the roses are blooming.”

Jean Emily Lee - April 09, 1929 - March 03, 2022

Departed: 03/03/2022 (Alamogordo)
Obituary Preview: Jean Emily Lee The pioneering matriarch of our family at Hat Ranch gained her angels wings and flew to heaven on March 3, 2022. She was surrounded by family and in peace at her home in Alamogordo, NM.
Born Jean Emily Althaus in Fort Bayard, NM on April 9, 1929 to Mrs. Emily Joughin and Harry John Althaus Sr.  Jean was one of four children of this couple attending school at Fort Bayard, NM until 8th grade graduation. She attended high school in Silver City, NM and then obtained a bachelor’s degree in physical education at Western New Mexico University.  While attending college Jean participated as a cheerleader and on the women’s baseball team.  From an early age she helped her father maintain the golf course at Fort Bayard and learned to play golf.
While at college Jean married the love of her life, Charlie T. Lee.  Upon graduation this couple moved to the family ranch in the Sacramento Mountains.  After the condemnation of the ranch in 1958 by McGregor Range the couple moved to where the present-day Hat Ranch is located.  Jean and Charlie had one daughter, Linda J. Lee and a son, Don L. (Bebo) Lee. Jean began homeschooling Linda for one year when she was instructed by the New Mexico Secretary of Education to “do like the other country women and move to town for your children’s education”. This was written in a letter Jean still has.  Jean did in fact come to Alamogordo with her children where she was active in Sierra Elementary PTA, Girl Scouts of America, and Alamogordo 4H. Jean still maintained the books for Hat Ranch and went to the ranch every weekend and school break.
Jean became a founding member of the Otero Cowbelles in 1972 an advocate group for beef.  During this endeavor she was also a lifetime member and officer of various positions in the state-based New Mexico Cowbelles and nationally in American National Cattle Women.  In addition Jean served as a secretary to Senator Charlie Lee during the years 1981-1984 in Santa Fe when secretaries were not provided to the legislators. Jean served as governor appointed Board of Regents for the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired from 1978-1998.  In 1993 Jean received the New Mexico Cowbelle of the Year award.
Jean is preceded in death by two brothers, Louis H. and Harry F. Althaus.  Her husband Charlie of 54 years, one daughter Linda J. Lee and one granddaughter Heather R. Davis.
Jean is survived by her son, Bebo and his wife, Madalynn; her grandson, Colton Lee (Katelin Spradley) and granddaughter, Dalton and husband, Brian Lamczyk all of Alamogordo; grandson, Shawn and wife Nicole Williamson of Etiwanda, CA; granddaughters, Misty (Sean) Orr of Alamogordo and Amber (Wade) McClain of Tularosa; great grandchildren are Morgayne Smith, Kamrynne Davis and Kimberlee Orr of Alamogordo and Jordan Walker of Tularosa.  Jean is also survived by one sister, MaryJane McDowell of Nixa, MO and two nieces, Jody (Ted) McMurry of Ozark, MO and Roxanne Althaus of Lubbock TX; a nephew, Brian (Deb) Althaus of Albuquerque, NM; as well as great nieces and nephews.
Jean was a caring and kindhearted person that treated everybody the same.  The ethics that she lived by impressed on her children and grandchildren.  She was always supporting and encouraging to all that she encountered.  If you knew her "quiet" voice, you knew the beautiful blue eyes and a smile that would melt your heart were soon to follow.  Her next question might even be, "When are we going back to the ranch?"  Here's Mrs. Big John signing off.
We would like to give a special thanks to the caregivers for treating “grandma” like part of their family always throughout the years. We also would like to thank Kara and the team at Encompass Home Health in Ruidoso for an excellent job and their support.
Services and visitation will be at Scenic Chapel located at 1334 N. Francisco Duran - May 03, 1952 - January 24, 2022

Departed: 01/24/2022 (Alamogordo)
Obituary Preview: Francisco "Cruz" Duran, who was born on the 3rd of May 1952 in Alamogordo, New Mexico to Josefina Enciso Moncada and Victor Duran, has sadly departed his earthly home after a short and tragic battle with cancer.    Frank leaves behind his wife and the "Apple of his eye", Stella Duran.  After joining the USMC in 1971 and doing a tour in Vietnam, he returned home to Alamogordo where he met the love of his life.  Falling in love, he lived to make Stella happy and serve her with the love he felt she deserved.  Without question, he stepped up and raised her two sons, loving Frank Diaz Jr. and Jose Diaz as they were his own and proudly named himself their father.  As Frank and Stella continued their loving life together, they eventually expanded the family with two more children, Rosa Wilson and Elfego Duran.  With a persistent work ethic and immense love for all his children, he never faltered as a man, father, or husband.  Cruz worked faithfully and persistently to ensure his family was taken care of, providing a humble but loving life.
Frank was endlessly loved and honored by his family and friends.  He never ceased to bring a smile or a laugh to those who encountered him.  With his silly and sarcastic sense of humor he was quick with a comeback, or just injecting silliness into any conversation no matter who he was speaking with.  He would almost always be seen with a fresh, hot cup of coffee or cigarette in hand, waving to those he knew as they passed by outside of his place of business.  He will be extremely and dearly missed by many.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Stella Duran; his children, Frank Diaz Jr, Jose Diaz, Rosa Wilson, Elfego Duran and James Brusuelas; his sisters, Martha, Barbara, Eloisa and Josie; his brothers, Tony, Bart, Lawrence and Jimmy.  He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and grandchildren and even great grandchildren who he especially adored.  Frank is now reunited with his parents and siblings, Elfego, Victor and sister, Terry Duran, who preceded him in death.
Services will be held at Mountain View Assembly of God on 12th and Cuba Avenue on the 12th of February at 2:00 PM.  Please join us for the reception after the service at the same location.
The Duran family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Scenic Chapel to direct the funeral services.

Rochelle Marie Mieras - September 09, 1939 - January 10, 2022

Departed: 01/10/2022 (Alamogordo)
Obituary Preview: Rochelle Marie (Pelletier) Mieras, 82, passed away on January 10, 2022, in Alamogordo, New Mexico. She was born on September 9, 1939, in Ipswich, Massachusetts to J. Arthur Pelletier and M. Marguerite (Poirier) Pelletier.
Our mom always said she ‘lived an awesome life” and doing justice for a vibrantly lived life is difficult in just a couple of paragraphs. Our family would like to share with you that mom graduated from the Beverly Hospital School of Practical Nursing in 1961 at a time when nurses wore all white (including a Nurse’s cap) and carried a whet stone to sharpen needles before you gave a shot to a patient, washed and re-powdered gloves, made formula from scratch and cloth diapers ruled the day.
Rochelle and DJ married in 1961 in Ipswich, Massachusetts and started our family in Rochester, NH, not far from Pease Air Force Base in Kittery, Maine. She became a world traveler- courtesy of the U.S. Air Force. A C130 trip to Spain and two duty stations; then headed to Michigan where mom held down the fort with five kids under the age of 10 in an old farmhouse, working as a nurse while dad was in Vietnam. Then on to Idaho, Kansas, and eventually to New Mexico.
Mom graduated with her Associate Degree in Nursing in 1975, managing full time classes with said five kids and husband. She restarted her Nursing career at Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital in Alamogordo, NM working on the Surgical floor and a short time later transferred to the Operating Room. Mom loved the OR pace, patient care opportunities, and most of the surgeons & staff.  She was promoted to OR Manager, bringing in the first Laparoscopic surgeries in New Mexico to our hospital. She retired after 22 years, with 9 years as an OR supervisor. Mom also taught and managed the Clinical Lab for the Nursing program at NMSU-A for several years. Known for her New England accent and hysterical sense of humor, she was a force to be reckoned with for students who did not pay attention to proper wrinkle free bedmaking and OR quality sterile technique. She was proud to have been President of the Altrusa Club of Alamogordo, and a longtime member of AORN. Mom loved riding motorcycles with dad and the “Retreads”, drove her own Yamaha 750 Sega, enjoyed dancing at the Desperado, sewing, bingo, camping, and an occasional “rummy dummy” while playing a wicked game of Spite and Malice (no cheating). Mom touched the lives of many people in her 43 years of nursing, and certainly for the years we were lucky to have her as our mom. She is sorely missed.
Survivors include her three daughters,  Kimberley (Jerry) Warf of Alamogordo, NM, Michelle (Curtis) Nelson of Alamogordo, NM, Nicole (Damon) Tankersley of Alamogordo, NM;  two sons, Timothy (Sharon) Mieras of Laborcita Canyon, NM, and Christopher (Stacey) Mieras of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and Memere to three grandsons- Daniel (Kathleen) Montoya, Zachary Tankersley, and Michael (Cassie) Mieras all of Alamogordo, NM; four granddaughters, Caitlin Montoya of Lochbuie, Colorado, Elizabeth (Scott) Bailey of Alamogordo, NM, Deanna Mieras and Leah Mieras of Colorado Springs, Colo.,  Grace Warf of Alamogordo, NM and eight great grandchildren. One sister, Elena Poirier of Rochester, NH and one brother, Phillip (Sylvia) Pelletier of Rochester, NH; numerous nieces and nephews, and much-loved friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Donald James “DJ” Mieras, her father Joseph Arthur Pelletier, mother M. Marguerite Pelletier, brothers Tommy Pelletier and David Pelletier.
A Celebration of Life for Rochelle will take place on Saturday, February 5th, 2022, at 1100 a.m. at the Scenic Chapel located at 1334 N. Scenic Dr., Alamogordo, NM.
The family has chosen a private graveside internment.
Should friends desire, contributions can be made to Alamogordo Hospice. The Mieras family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Scenic Chapel to direct the funeral services

Harold Allen Tharp - February 05, 1922 - December 31, 2021

Departed: 12/31/2021 (Alamogordo)
Obituary Preview: Harold Allen Tharp was born on February 5, 1922 in a parsonage home in a little east Texas town named Groveton. He completed Milby High School in Houston, TX at age 16 and took a job at Dow Chemical Corp. in Freeport, TX. He enrolled in night school at Rice Institute, then progressed rapidly to General Manager of the Dow Hotel, Apartments, and Homes serving their plant executives that managed the world’s largest magnesium and ethyl glycol chemical plants with over 100,000 employees.
On Dec. 7th, 1941, the day that changed everyone’s plans for the future, Harold decided he would join the Army Air Corp which in 1948 became the United States Air Force. He was finishing his sophomore year in accounting at Rice Institute when he joined the Army Air Corps in March 1942. He had completed WTS for ferry pilots taking fighter aircraft to Europe when the shortage of bomber pilots became critical. Harold was a member of the first twenty single engine pilots chosen for the four engine training without having graduated from twin engine school. He was later chosen as a pilot instructor in the B-24 Liberator, which is what he was doing during World War II at the time Japan surrendered September 2, 1945.
Harold remained in the Ready Air Force Reserve until his retirement with the rank of Lt. Col. on November 28, 1974. During his thirty-two years and eight months of service, he held assignments as Director of Procurement, Contracts & Logistics at Ellington AFB, Dyse AFB, and Harlingen AFB (all in Texas) Francis E. Warren AFB in WY, Warner Robbins AFB in GA, Eglin AFB, FL: Hamilton AFB in CA, Wright Patterson AFB, OH: Kirtland AFB and the AF Missile Dev. Center, in NM. He completed his military career in a full colonel position as Liaison Officer to the Governor of New Mexico for the Secretary of the Air Force. His assignment and offices were in Santa Fe. In case of a national emergency, Harold would have assumed direct command and control over all Air Force personnel on active duty in New Mexico with all communication channels direct to the Air Force Secretary’s office in the Pentagon, Washington DC.  Harold never returned to his interest in accounting but chose to attend night school five nights each week at both Texas Southmost College and Texas A and I University to earn his degree in Agriculture and Animal Husbandry.
He continued with his Air Force civilian career as a Contracting Officer for the Air Force Systems Command to be assigned as one of the five COs called to the Pentagon to review and finalize the nine thousand page contract with Lockheed Aircraft Corporation  for the cargo aircraft, Galaxy C-5, which in 1966 was the largest and costliest aircraft and government contract ever written. Three years later, Harold retired from the Air Force Missile Development Center at Holloman Air Force Base in July of 1969 as the Director of Research and Development Contracts Division.
Harold’s equal love to flying was conquering the challenges of creating a new business and making it a success against all adversities. He was never satisfied to have only one career or profession in progress at one time and continued to invest in new business ventures simultaneously with his military and civilian Air Force careers.
In between the two, Harold financed and/or founded and operated over two dozen business ventures over the past seven decades. To mention a few, he put his first business on a side street next to his dad’s church in Gilmer, Texas when he was just nine years of age. He and a partner sold cold drinks, sandwiches, and candy all at a 40% mark up with a whopping success. His brothers laughingly claimed that years later the same $400 profit from that summer went into building the O’Reilly Automotive Parts Store at 500 S. What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary websites, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a chance for loved ones to pay tribute and celebrate the person's life.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or cremation service may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template for the family to use.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and any notable achievements or hobbies. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online obituary websites allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and help readers remember the person.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary.

Can I write my own obituary?
