Jerry Willie Thompson - January 17, 1955 - January 08, 2024

Departed: 01/08/2024 (Thomasville)
Obituary Preview: On a clear winter day in Thomasville, North Carolina, Willie and Tisha Thompson welcomed a son. Jerry Willie Thompson was born on January 17, 1955. The seventh of twelve children, he was determined to stand out from the rest of them and succeeded. Raised to be hardworking, he, like the other boys, took his turn delivering newspapers for a quarter a week and stocking the shelves in the Stevenson’s grocery store.
He grew up with his brothers and had his share of fun, playing ball in the backyard and on the streets of Thomasville. He started driving trucks for the Amazon Cotton Mill. Jerry attended Thomasville Senior High and graduated in the class of 1973. After his graduation, he served one tour in the United States Army.
Soon after leaving the Army and beginning his long career in the hospitality industry, Jerry met the love of his life, Audrey. The two married in February of 1982. Three years later, in May 1985, they had a daughter, Shaunta.

Jerry’s retirement was energetic, and he enjoyed every minute. He made time for his friends, Michel Evans, Donald Mock, and Terry Davis. He spent time with family and loved ones. He treasured watching the NY Giants, playing cards, and, of course, he prioritized one of his favorite pastimes….golf.
These things preoccupied the majority of Jerry’s enjoyment until the birth of his grandchildren, Alexis and Alivia. Jerry loved them deeply, and they quickly became one of the brightest lights in his life. They were just as enthralled with him. He spent a lot of time playing and getting to know them. He considered his time with them as time well spent.
On January 08, 2024, Jerry Willie Thompson passed away in his sleep.
Jerry was honest, dependable, hardworking, loving, and joyful. Jerry lived a life full of joy. His joy was contagious, and it quickly spread to those around him. He was quick to smile. He could brighten a day just by walking through your front door. He was full of jokes and stories that he shared willingly. He had a memorable laugh that could warm any heart. Departed: 12/08/2023 (Thomasville)
Obituary Preview: Life Reflections
James Clarence Kirkland, first born son of the late Elizabeth and Sylvester Kirkland, Sr., was born on December 16, 1945 in Thomasville, North Carolina.
James attended Church Street High School in Thomasville, North Carolina and was a member of the class of 1964. While attending school he was a member of the Church Street Hornets football and basketball teams. As a basketball player, he was well known for his "yo yo" basketball shot. As a result of his achievements in both sports, in 2022 he was inducted in the Thomasville High Schools Athletic Hall of Fame.
Shortly after leaving high school he relocated to Reading, PA where he resided for 18 years. While residing in Reading, he played semi pro football with the Reading Keystones for two years. Also, during this time, he improved his self-taught golf skills and began to participate in numerous golf tournaments and winning many trophies. Upon his return to Thomasville, James joined the Greensboro Golf Club where he made many friends and continued to play in tournaments across the country. James was a man who never let anything defeat him. His next challenge was learning to play Chess. His cousins/best friends, Gary Craddock and TR Harris, taught him to play. Being a very competitive man, he began to challenge other players, winning some and losing some.
James was employed at Carpenter Steele, in Reading, for many years. After his employment at Carpenter Steele ended, he changed professions and became a long distance truck driver. He drove for several major trucking companies, including Dunkin Donuts and Hertz Penske. Upon returning to Thomasville, he was employed with Thomasville Furniture Industries, Epes Transport and Schneider Trucking. He retired in 1994.
In 2005 he met his best friend and life partner, Johnnie Maria Booker, who lived just around the corner from his home. They were united in marriage on October 22, 2010. Johnnie and James enjoyed traveling together. Their special destinations were Atlantic City and Harrah's Cherokee. Having never traveled by train, his dream was to travel by train from High Point to Raleigh. When not playing golf, he enjoyed watching golf on television, especially when Tiger Woods was playing. He was fortunate to see Tiger play in person at the Wachovia Championship in 2007. Because of an old football knee injury, he was unable to continue to play golf at the level he enjoyed, so he retired from the sport and stored his golf clubs.
In 2019 James decided to join his wife at First Missionary Baptist Church and became a member under the leadership of Pastor Calvin Smith.
James was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Rosa Billie, Mary Lindsay and brother, Danny Kirkland.
