Kenneth C. Bice - February 25, 1953 - April 20, 2022

Departed: 04/20/2022 (Verona)
Obituary Preview: Verona - Kenneth C. Bice, age 69, of Verona, WI, passed from a rare, aggressive cancer on Apr. 20, 2022. Ken was born on Feb. 25, 1953 to Richard and Beatrice Bice (née Brown) in Beaver Dam, WI. Soon after, his family moved to Edgerton, where he attended schools and graduated in 1971. Ken then earned a Masters in Human Factors Engineering from UW-Madison in 1977.
In his early career, he was a human factors engineer and software developer for Texas Instruments, working on exciting projects in early speech technology and hyperlink concept products. He was a tech enthusiast and early adopter, curious and optimistic about what the future may bring. He and his wife chose to raise their children closer to other family, so they returned to Madison, where Ken worked at CUNA Mutual until retirement in 2013. Following successful surgery in 2014 to remove a brain tumor, Ken became involved with The Bodgery, a makerspace in Madison, and served on its Board until this past year. During retirement, Ken started a local chapter of e-NABLE, building 3D hand and arm prosthetics. He thrived designing creative custom prosthetics that benefited others in need. He also mentored both UW-Madison and Verona High School students to nurture their interest in STEM fields.
Ken was a bright light wherever he went, using his humor and easygoing, good nature to put others at ease. He was a wonderful and engaged dad who’d often be the one having the most fun in a swimming pool, telling masterful puns as well as lame dad jokes, scheming new pranks, and finding ways to become involved with his family’s interests in any way possible. Ken was named to the Wisconsin Lacrosse Federation Hall of Fame as one of the original Board members who helped establish the sport in the state. He also served as a youth hockey and lacrosse referee to support his son’s avid sports interests. Friends enjoyed his wacky Halloween costumes over the years, and also knew Ken as the man who rolled into parties with his traveling margarita suitcase. Over his lifetime, he stayed active, enjoying golf, judo, skiing, floor hockey and bicycling. In his years after retirement, he traveled the world with his wife and daughter. Despite being in good health otherwise, his cancer took him down quickly.
Ken married Patricia (née Hochmuth) in an outdoor double wedding on the memorable, stormy day of July 30, 1977. Those attending joked Pat’s sister would get married, while the fierce storms moving in would delay Ken and Pat’s vows. They were wrong, and both couples celebrated their 40th wedding anniversaries together during yet another weather newsmaker, a record-breaking heat wave in Vancouver.
Ken is survived by his wife, Pat; son Kevin of Verona; daughter Kinsey (fiancé Travis Ladd) of Seattle, WA; brother Daniel Bice (Janis) of Lake Geneva; sister-in-law Rose Bice of Edgerton; and many beloved nieces, nephews and their children. He was preceded in death by his parents, his father’s second wife, Carol Bice (née Matts), and brother Donald Bice.

August Oliver Gerke - June 16, 1982 - March 20, 2022

Departed: 03/20/2022 (Verona)
Obituary Preview: August Oliver Gerke 6/16/82-3/20/22
Augie wouldn’t want a traditional obituary, in fact, I know he wouldn’t want one at all, unless it was written by someone who truly knew him and would be able to talk about him openly, freely, and without reservation. That is the kind of person Augie was; he didn’t mince words and told it exactly like it was. And so, as his older sister, I am honored to write this obituary for my little brother.
August Oliver Gerke was born on June 16th, 1982 and grew up in Verona, Wisconsin. The second child of Nancy and Randy Gerke. He was the self-proclaimed “favorite child” although this was an argument the two of us would have many times throughout our life.
Augie wasn’t much of a fan of “school” but loved sports. He was a natural athlete and excelled at anything involving balls. Kidding aside, he really loved sports and spent a lot of his childhood on the wrestling mat as part of the Verona Youth Wrestling Program.
Growing up, Augie and I spent a lot of time biking around the neighborhood and making up games in our basement and backyard, and by the time our childhood was over, I lost count of all of the items we broke as the dynamic Gerke duo. His lifelong best friend Justin Larson was always in tow and was a willing accomplice in many of our childhood antics. Augie lost one of his front teeth during a heated game of kickball in our backyard and was hit by a car on my watch while we were crossing a busy street in Verona. It’s a miracle he made it through childhood with me as his big sister. Despite all of this, there was never a shortage of fun, drinking too much soda, belching, calling our mom at work to tattle on one another, watching The Golden Girls, playing Nintendo and sneaking out onto our roof when we were both grounded. Even though Augie drove me crazy sometimes, he truly was a pal and a confidant.
Augie graduated from Verona High School in 2001 and came close to qualifying for state in wrestling, something he was always very proud of. He was incredibly fond of his high school wrestling coach Bob Wozniak and as an adult continued to want to give back to the wrestling program. Augie also loved playing football for the Verona Wildcats.
Augie got his first job at age of fourteen at the Cozee Inn in Verona.  Even after starting a full-time position at Newcomb Construction, he continued part-time at Cozee for over sixteen years because he loved the owners. Augie viewed Barb and Gary as a second set of parents and would have done anything for them. He started as a dishwasher and worked his way up to the “shrimp de-crapper”. Augie’s favorite catch line from his time in the restaurant business was “ding fries are done!” Augie had dreams to one day attend culinary school and I wish he could have fulfilled that dream. He would have made an incredible chef. Augie also worked at the Duluth Trading Company in Belleville and Ellis Manufacturing in Verona.
Bruce Meier was an influential mentor to Augie and loved him unconditionally. Bruce worked with Augie at both Newcomb Construction and Bachmann Construction. When you talk to anyone about Augie’s work ethic, the overwhelming consensus was that he worked harder than anyone they knew.
More than anything, Augie loved his dog, Sugar. Girlfriends often joked that Augie loved Sugar more than them. Augie had a tattoo honoring his favorite girl and was devastated when she passed away in August of 2021. Another one of Augie’s loves as an adult was bowling. Augie was in many bowling leagues and loved attending state bowling competitions. Augie also loved playing fastpitch softball with my dad and cheering on the University of Michigan.
When we remember Augie, it is important to acknowledge our mom, Nancy. She stuck by him through thick and thin, helped take care of his dog Sugar, and loved him with her whole heart. She would have done anything for him and made sure Augie always knew he was loved.
Augie was the kind of person that once you got to know him, you would never forget him. To know Augie, was to love him. Augie was a non-stop prankster and always knew the right thing to say or do to make you laugh. Augie’s one liners were the best, and when people remember him, they smile thinking about what a great guy he was and how funny he was. He was incredibly loyal and would have done anything for those he loved.
Augie was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Gotthold and Marion Gerke. Augie idolized his grandparents and often visited their graves when he felt sad.  He was also preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Donald Olday and his beloved dog Sugar.
Augie leaves behind his parents, Nancy and Randy Gerke, sister, Brenna (Gerke) Siebold, brother-in-law Joel Siebold, nieces and nephews, Jocelyn, Jonah, Leo, Hazelle and Hank Siebold, and maternal grandmother, Janice Olday.
There are so many things I will miss about my brother. His infectious laugh, inappropriate t-shirts, love of ketchup, the way he drank milk right from the carton, his use of the phrase “f&%k that” and his love of wearing the red speedo and the Borat sling to name a few. And most of all, I will miss my yearly text to let me know that the McRib is back. Love you long, long, time, AOG Dog. Until we meet again, give Sugar, grandpa and grandma, and Neen a big kiss and hug from me. I hope you knew how much we all loved you and not a day will go by when we won’t think of you. “Yeah, a picture's worth a thousand words But you can't see what those shades of gray keep covered. You should've seen it in color.” -In Color, Jamey Johnson (Augie’s favorite song)
A celebration of life is planned for the afternoon of July 16th, 2022 at the Blue Mounds VFW, 2787 Erbe Rd, Blue Mounds, WI 53517. More details to come.

Elaine N. Krzeminski - February 12, 1922 - March 15, 2022

Departed: 03/15/2022 (Verona)
Obituary Preview: Elaine Krzeminski, 100, passed away peacefully in Cedarburg, WI March 15, 2022.  She was born February 12, 1922 to Emil and Charlotte (Poltrock) Erickson in Chicago, IL.  She loved her hometown and remained there until very late in life.  After graduating from high school, she stepped into the role of “Rosie the Riveter” and spent much of the World War II years working in a Chicago factory making screws, bolts, and nuts for the war effort.
After the war, she worked at the Ecko Products Manufacturing Factory where she met her future husband, John Krzeminski.  They married in 1948, and began to raise a family in a Chicago northwest neighborhood.  She enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom.  She also enjoyed watching her Chicago Cubs and playing with her grandchildren.  It wasn’t until 1997 that John and Elaine decided to relocate to Arizona, following her daughter and grandchildren there.  They followed her again when they moved to Verona, WI in 2004.
Elaine loved her life in Verona and would have stayed, but once again to be closer to her family, she moved with them to Cedarburg in 2017.  She had many fond memories of Verona and her condo life with her pet cat and dog.  Having lived in Chicago most of her life, she could hardly imagine the moves she had made.  Yet, she often harkened back to her Chicago days.
Preceding her in death was husband John, and son James Lee.  She is survived by daughter Lois (Moore), and son Tom.  Also, grandchildren, David (Melissa) Moore, Jodi (David) Charles, and Ty (Xai) Moore.  Elaine was also so proud of her two great granddaughters.
Burial will be at St. Andrew on Sat. March 19th, 2022.

Patricia Jeanne "Pat" Vollenweider - December 11, 1948 - February 17, 2022

Departed: 02/17/2022 (Verona)
Obituary Preview: Verona-
Patricia Jeanne Vollenweider, encourager, hugger, and expert at hosting a fabulous gathering died February 17, 2022. For her 73 years, she lived a robust and joyful life based in Verona, Wisconsin.
“Try something that scares your pants off but won’t get you hurt. You might learn you can do anything!” is something Pat recently mused on experiencing new places and people. She and her loving husband Steve took an uncharacteristically last-minute trip to Hawaii where they snorkeled in a volcano. They kickstarted their retirement with a trip to Australia, where she braved trying a kangaroo tail cooked in the desert sand. She explored European countries and spelunked in a lava-tube cave in Iceland.
An inspiration for two adoring daughters—Julie (Josh) Robertson and Laura (Joe) Bremer—they enjoyed many “Vollenweider Women Weekends of Fun,” pre-GPS “adventures” (getting lost), and a trip to Ireland, where she spent time in the back seat with her eyes closed as they drove on the wrong side of the road, navigated tight village lanes, and ended up accidentally driving in a parade.
She danced onstage with Andy Williams in 1967. She made lifelong friends with two fellow smart girls at UW-Whitewater. She married her true love in 1973—even after he spent countless years of elementary school-style declarations of love such as pulling her hair and chasing her. She swapped tips on parenting and teaching with her longtime friend and neighbor across the street. She spent years playing euchre with a rowdy group of gal pals. She kept up with friends at a regular retired-teacher’s breakfast. She lent her time and talents as a volunteer with her church and the Verona Public library. And she cherished special time one day a week watching her precious grandsons Miles and Lincoln.
When she retired in 2010 from teaching elementary school, an outpouring of past students from her 38-year career wrote letters to share that she was their favorite teacher, taught them some of their most memorable lessons, and always knew that if they needed a dose of kindness and caring—she was there.
Her parents Richard and Jeanne Margaret Duppler welcomed her to what’s next, as she transitioned from this life. Setting the example for how to do life right, she leaves her family—including six younger brothers, Mike, Greg, Jeff, Mark, Jim, and Chris—and friends with a tremendous legacy of love, memories, and laughs.
Thank you to the difference-making individuals with SSM Health St. Mary’s Care Center and SSM Health Hospice Services for their compassionate care of Pat and her family.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries are important because they provide a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also informing others of their passing. They can also serve as a historical record, providing valuable information for genealogical research and family histories.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, an obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. In some cases, a close friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include a brief biography, achievements, and any notable accomplishments.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary, but it's generally recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important information. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many newspapers and online obituary platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper varies, but typically involves contacting the newspaper's obituary department directly or using an online submission form. Be sure to check their guidelines and deadlines in advance.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it's becoming more common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life is remembered in the way you want it to be.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the most basic information. An obituary is a longer, more detailed tribute that provides a fuller picture of the person's life.

What if I need to cancel or withdraw an obituary?

If you need to cancel or withdraw an obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform as soon as possible. They may have specific policies and procedures for handling these situations.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Yes, including quotes or lyrics that were meaningful to the deceased can add a personal touch to the obituary and help capture their spirit.

What if I'm writing an obituary for someone who was estranged from their family?

This can be a sensitive situation. Consider focusing on the person's accomplishments, interests, and positive qualities, rather than their family relationships.

How do I write an obituary for someone who had no immediate family?

In this case, you might focus on the person's friends, colleagues, or community connections. You could also highlight their achievements, hobbies, or volunteer work.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?
