Marie Hood - January 14, 1930 - May 10, 2024

Departed: 05/10/2024 (Ruston)
Obituary Preview: Marie Blaushild Hood passed on to her forever home on the afternoon of Friday, May 10, 2024, at her home in Dubach, Louisiana, surrounded by her two sons.  She was 94 years old.  Her love for her Savior and love for her family and friends defined her life.
Marie was born on January 14, 1930, in Ruston, Louisiana, to Sam and Louise Blaushild.  She spent all of her childhood in Ruston and was a student at Ruston High School.  She graduated with the class of 1947.  After high school she attended Louisiana Tech University where she met “Tinker” Hood.  They were married on January 27, 1951, and began building a life together.  Tinker enlisted with the United States Army during their first year of marriage and served for two years.  Both sons, Ivin and John, were born in Ruston, where the family lived in an apartment at Marie’s parents’ house.  In 1960 Tinker and Marie built a house together on family land in Dubach, Louisiana.  It was in this home where she would live for the rest of her life.
Marie was a faithful wife, mother, homemaker, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her sister, Dorothy, remembers she was always drawn to children and children were always drawn to her.  She especially remembers Marie’s attentiveness and love for their baby brother, Junior.  In their early years of marriage, she enjoyed watching Tinker play baseball, and they enjoyed playing ROOK with friends. Ivin and John fondly remember how hospitable their Mama was.  She would cook 3 big meals almost every day and would invite anyone who stopped by the house around the lunch hour to join them at the table, insisting that they stay and eat.  She always had plenty.  Most of all, they remember her devotion and faithfulness to the Lord and how much she loved being in church each Sunday as well as on Wednesday nights.  Marie joyfully served her family throughout her life.  She loved coordinating and cooking meals for gatherings both in her home and at her church. She also loved watching amateur (front yard and cow pasture) and professional baseball. She was a Braves fan for many years until she changed her allegiance to the Astros. She was also a loving and generous Mam-maw to 7 grandchildren who spent many weekends during their childhood at Mam-maw and Pap-paw’s house.  She made some of the best southern cooking in all of Goose Creek, would fry even the smallest fish they caught, and loved playing cards and board games with her grandchildren, as well as watching nighttime shows together.  She was so proud of her 17 great-grandchildren and consistently asked about their latest activities and accomplishments.  Until the past few years she hosted every holiday in their home, filled with laughter and the best aromas coming from the kitchen.  She was also a good friend. She and her friends enjoyed weekday walks and weekly lunches at Blue Light Cafe as well as gathering for ice cream at Dairy Queen following Tinker’s church-league softball.
She and Tinker and their boys were faithful members of Saint Rest Baptist Church, where she was an active member of the Woman’s Missionary Union, planning both the program and prayer calendar for many years.  She also served as church treasurer for over 50 years, Sunday School secretary, and served the church in various other roles. Although she will be greatly missed, Marie leaves a legacy of generosity in love, affection, and selflessness that will be valued for all who remember her.  Proverbs 31:25-31 describes her well:  “She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.  She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue.  She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.  Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her:  ‘Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.’  Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.  Give her the reward she has earned, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.”
Marie is survived by her sons Ivin Hood and wife Liz, John Hood and wife Liz; her grandchildren Will Hood, Jenny Hood Cohn and husband Brian, Kimberly Hood Audi and husband Daniel, Garson Hood Woodard and husband Matt, Seth Hood and wife Vanna, Deanna White, Lance White and wife Chelse; her great-grandchildren Abby and Sydney Hood; Meredith, Brannon and Caroline Cohn; Josiah, Andrew, Abigail and Samuel Audi; Trigger, Campbell and Larkin Woodard; Reid, Jake and Lane Hood; Kennedy and Camille White; sister Dorothy Blaushild Mecom and brother Sam Blaushild, Jr. and many nieces and nephews.
Marie is preceded in death by her devoted husband Milton Lavelle “Tinker” Hood, her father Sam Blaushild, her mother Louise Galloway Blaushild, her sister Betty Blaushild Smith and husband Lee, her sister Evelyn Blaushild Cuny and husband Sonny, her brother-in-law William “Bill” Mecom, and her daughter-in-law Trigger Stevens Hood.
Her family would like to express their sincerest gratitude to her devoted friends Mederick Canterbury, Frances Harrison, Ann Ford, Ann Trammel, and Randy and Lisa Ray.  A special thank you to Dr. Ben Grigsby and the staff at Willis Knighton Family Medicine and to her in-home caregivers who took such attentive care of her from Tender Touch Svc., LLC: Vivian Cockerham, Evelyn Andrews, Phyllis Jackson, Sherry Cabrera, and Debra Green; as well as care-givers Susie Cox and Patricia Ellis.
A celebration of Marie’s 94 years of life will be held at Saint Rest Baptist Church in Dubach, Louisiana, on Wednesday, May 15, at 1:30 pm, with Dr. Randy Ray officiating and Lisa Ray leading worship.  Visitation will precede the service from 12:00-1:30.  Following the service, her interment will be held at the St. Rest Baptist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons Will Hood, Seth Hood, and Lance White; as well as her grandsons-in-law Brian Cohn, Daniel Audi, and Matt Woodard; and her nephews Rusty Woodard and Brian Woodard. Fredric Lee Hoogland - February 18, 1936 - April 22, 2024

Departed: 04/22/2024 (Ruston)
Obituary Preview: A Celebration of Life will be held for Fredric Lee Hoogland, 88, of Ruston, at 3 PM on Friday, April 26, 2024, in the Chapel at Temple Baptist Church under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Dale Oden officiating.   Visitation will be prior to the service from 2 PM to the time of service.
Fred was born on February 18, 1936, and passed away peacefully on April 22, 2024, following a lengthy illness.   He lived most of his life in Ruston and said he never wanted to live anywhere else.  He was a graduate of Ruston High School and graduated in Horticulture at Louisiana Tech University.
Fred was a dynamic force in our community. His entrepreneurial spirit, vision, and leadership profoundly impacted those around him. As a business owner in the nursery and landscaping trade, Fred’s innovative ideas and dedication propelled his ventures to great success. His tireless efforts and time spent training others in the nursery and landscape field enriched the lives of countless individuals through employment and career opportunities.
Fred was a true leader in every sense of the word.  He owned and operated Hoogland’s Nursery and Landscape, Inc. and was very active in the Louisiana Association of Nurserymen, earning his way to being president of that association.   He served in the Ruston Jaycees as president and was later named Outstanding Young Man of the Year in Ruston. Fred was on the Lincoln Parish Police Jury for sixteen years, serving as president of the jury for his last eight years.  He was active in many other civic organizations including the Ruston Kiwanis, the Farm Bureau, and served on the Lincoln General Hospital Board (currently Northeast Louisiana Medical Center).
Beyond his many professional accomplishments, Fred was deeply committed to the betterment of our community. He generously contributed his time, resources, and expertise to various charitable causes, leaving a legacy of compassion and service. Fred’s lifelong passion, dating back to his junior high school days, was his vision for Lincoln Parish Park.  As Ruston’s Glen Harris appropriately wrote in June of 2018, “If there ever was a visionary, a person who could look at something and imagine what it could become, it was Ruston’s Fredric Hoogland.” Fredric was one of those men that if he could dream it, he could build it.  Whether inventing a means to streamline an operation at his nursery and landscape business or using his backhoe to build a ten-acre pond, dam, and spillway, or the thousands of yards he landscaped, Fred’s talents and unwavering work ethic were unmatched.
As for our community, Fred’s lifelong quest for the land acquisition and development for the Lincoln Parish Park was his crowning achievement. Over several years Fred spent countless hours and days walking the woods of Lincoln Parish in an effort to find the perfect location for the Parish Park.  He succeeded. Fred oversaw the construction of our Lincoln Parish Park and turned a patch of woods on the Farmerville highway into the jewel it is today. Upon the opening of the park, Fred served as the first Lincoln Parish Park administrator overseeing and building pavilions, beaches, campgrounds, roads, playgrounds and much more. Fred’s attention to detail ranging from the flower beds, to the park entrance, to the location of the BBQ pits in the campground was amazing.
Fred was most active in the lives of his two boys Mike and David.  He built camps in the woods with catwalks running between the trees, rope swings for entertainment, and took the boys and their friends on many hunting and camping trips. His home on Highway 80 East was the place to be.  The Hoogland’s hosted huge July 4th cookouts with the famous washer-pitching tournament. From the camps he built in the woods to the involvement in Mike’s and David’s sports careers, Fred was involved in everything.  He was a very caring man.
Later in life, Fred married the love of his life, Margaret Sims Dunn Hoogland.  At their home on Ashland Street in Ruston, he turned a swampy cypress tree-bottom into a showplace with beautiful ponds, woods, and grounds.
Fred’s magnetic personality and charisma drew people to him. His presence lit up any room he entered. While exuding confidence and strength, he also had a genuine warmth and generosity that endeared him to many.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, John and Winifred Hoogland, his brother Richard Hoogland, his daughter Cynthia Lee Hoogland, his son, Michael John Hoogland, and great granddaughter, Holly Diane Hoogland.
Fred was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.  His survivors include his wife of 22 years, Margaret; his son David and wife Kellye and their children Jay and Will (Madison); his daughter-in-law Valerie and children John (Carlyle), Caroline (fiancé Brendan Lind), and Hunter (Olivia); Margaret’s children Sonia Beatty, Susan Hermes and husband Randal, Tucson Dunn and wife Natalie, and their children and grandchildren. He is survived by great-grandchildren Wrenly Blaise Hoogland, Hays Holt Hoogland, and Marshall John Hoogland, two brothers Donald and Jimmy (wife Dorothy Etta) and one sister Jane McDermott (husband Tom).
Special recognition and gratitude to Fred’s groundskeeper/friend D’Wesley Mardis for his three decades of hard work and loyalty and for making the grounds on Ashland Street look so beautiful.  Also, a huge thank you to Rachelle Lathan of Rachelle Lathan and Friends Caregiving Service for taking such personal and loving care of Fred over the last 6 years. Memorials may be made to Lincoln Parish Park – 211 Parish Road – Ruston, LA  71270

Lois, though humble in spirit and never wanting to be the center of attention, was a woman of many talents.  She will be remembered for her excellent cooking, her sweet and kind spirit, and her generosity.  Her family will miss her sense of humor, exceptional wisdom, and her unconditional love.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Dr. Charles Foxworth; son, David (Foxy) Foxworth; her parents; and her sister, Aleiace Tabor.  She is survived by her daughter, Judy Foxworth; granddaughter, Teri Ray Freeman (Jason); grandson, David Todd Ray; great-grandchildren, Tyler Freeman, Zachary Ray, Tucker Ray, Braden Ray, Brooklyn Ray, and several nieces, nephews, and many friends.
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Karen Cockerham, Sylvia Palmo, Gracie Thornton, Billy Jerro, and Twight Shelton for their compassionate and devoted care these past several years. There are not enough words to adequately convey what Lois’ life exemplified.  She loved Jesus, her family, and friends.  She was a lady of impeccable character and integrity.  Because Lois was a Christian and knew that God is in charge of all things, she always reminded us that “everything will be alright.”

Robert "Bobby" Mizell - November 25, 1943 - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Ruston)
Obituary Preview: Sadly, the world has said goodbye to a good, great, and godly man this week, Robert “Bobby” Mizell of Choudrant, LA.  He was a loving and deeply devoted husband to Carol Davis Mizell. They had an amazing, happy, and adventurous life together. He abundantly provided her needs physically and emotionally. She was his first and only love and they have celebrated over 60 wonderful years together. He was a kind, funny, smart, and engaging father to Lisa and Kim. He was there for them. He provided for them plentifully as children. Then, later, as adults, they vacationed together. Traveled doing mission work together. And holidayed together. He was there!
Bobby was a successful and honest businessman in Lincoln Parish. Mizell Electric Service was a trusted name in our community. He did excellent work at a fair price. He retired young, and then had various adventures, including camp host at several campgrounds.
He was a God-fearing Christian who served as a deacon at Dayspring Baptist Ministries in Ruston, as well as Pleasant Grove Baptist and First Baptist in Choudrant. He was faithful to give financially, sing (and often was song leader), teach when needed and support the church family. He never caused any division or trouble in any church.
Bobby was a hunter, a traveler, an artist, song-writer and a wonderful singer. He used his talents to uplift the kingdom of God. He made people happy and was always, always a gentleman. He was good-natured and did not have a temper problem. He could fix anything that was broken. He was a people-person and very hospitable. He always opened his home up for friends and family. His Bible has enough personal notes to create his own commentary.
He is leaving this world and headed to a better place, not because he was so good, but because he accepted Christ as his personal Savior so many years ago. His wife has been loved and cared for, his children have been loved and his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great, great grandchildren have a legacy for which they can be proud. The Mizell family name is respected because of who he was. We, the rest of us children, have a goodly heritage and will strive to make him smile a bit from heaven.... that is if he can take his eyes off of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Bobby is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Nola Mizell; sisters, Mary Lou Walker, and Ruby Dison; and brothers, Fred Mizell and Richard Mizell.

Joseph Daniel "Dan" Hollingsworth, Jr. - May 14, 1934 - March 18, 2024

Departed: 03/18/2024 (Ruston)
Obituary Preview: Joseph Daniel “Dan” Hollingsworth, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home on March 18, 2024.  He had spent the day doing the things he loved: preparing to plant this year’s tomatoes, walking his beloved dog Beau, and even making dinner.  He had gone out that morning to buy his wife Faye her favorite flowers and his son-in-law a birthday card.
Dan was born on May 14, 1934, in Meridian, Mississippi.  He graduated from Meridian High School in 1952 where he cultivated an interest in broadcasting at his high school radio station. After graduating from Meridian Junior College in 1954 with a specialty in Broadcast Engineering, Dan went on to work as a transmitter engineer for WTOK-TV in Meridian.  He soon moved over to the radio division as chief engineer-announcer, and his passion for the radio business took flight.  Radio also led him to the love of his life, Beverly Faye Brown, who worked at her father’s drugstore where Dan stopped in regularly before his shifts across the street at WTOK.  With only $50 in his pocket and a dream of someday owning his own business, he married Faye in 1955 and they started a family.
As a young man, Dan worked in every facet of radio, from sales and programming to engineering, writing and producing advertising, announcing and sports broadcasting.  Following promotions to managing and constructing radio stations in Alabama and Mississippi, at age 34 Dan had the opportunity to purchase KRUS AM/FM, and together he and Faye decided to take a chance and move with their 4 children to Ruston, Louisiana in 1968.
As Dan built his businesses, he increasingly embraced opportunities to serve his community.  He was the founding chairman of Ruston/Lincoln Crime Stoppers, a former member of Lincoln General Hospital and Ruston Chamber of Commerce Boards of Directors, and president of the Ruston Civic Symphony. In 1992 he received the Louisiana National Guard’s highest Civilian Honor for service to the National Guard during the Gulf War.
Dan’s radio stations in Ruston reflected his commitment to community service and broadcast excellence, with KXKZ winning Radio Station of the Year in Louisiana mid-sized markets for twelve years.  Dan became a leader in the industry as a former president of the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters (LAB), a 9-time Louisiana Associated Press Best Editorial Award winner and a recipient of the LAB’s Lifetime Achievement Award for service to his community.
Coincidentally, he served on the Ruston City Hall/Civic Center Advisory Committee that oversaw the construction of the current City Hall and Civic Center, never imagining that one day he would serve four terms there as the Mayor of Ruston.
Elected in 1998, Dan saw his new role as a way to give back to the city that had given him and his family so much.  His tenure brought the city economic growth and development, new and revitalized partnerships with Louisiana Tech, and extensive improvements in infrastructure, all the while insuring the city’s sound financial footing.  Most important, he truly cared about all of Ruston’s citizens and worked tirelessly to improve their safety and preserve Ruston’s beauty and charm.
Dan was awarded the 2012 Louisiana Tech University Artis Scogin Distinguished Service Award for his work with the university, including partnering with the university to help establish Louisiana Tech’s Enterprise Campus project.  He received the 2013 Ruston-Lincoln Chamber of Commerce Robert E. Russ award, the community’s most prestigious award for community service, and a Distinguished Service Award from Louisiana Tech’s administration and faculty in 2014.
An active member of Trinity Methodist Church, Dan’s Christian faith made him a rare public servant -- honest, humble, and selfless, never seeking recognition or the spotlight.  In his public and private life, it was second nature to extend himself to help others. At the end of his final term in office, Dan said, “God has blessed me in so many ways. I have always done work that I loved to do…always enjoyed going to work, no matter what the challenges or obstacles. Public service is particularly gratifying and immensely satisfying when you have a role in making things better for others. But none of this would have been possible had it not been for the constant support and encouragement of my wife Faye.”
In retirement Dan never stopped learning and growing, engaging his family and friends on politics, history, gardening, cooking, music, and many other areas of interest.  His Wednesday morning coffee group was a highlight of each week. He had recently begun grafting fruit trees and at age 89, was planning to resume playing the piano for residents at the local nursing homes.  Those who knew Dan well mourn a kind and loyal friend and a faithful and loving husband, father and grandfather.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Daniel “Dan” Hollingsworth, Sr. and Marguerite Hollingsworth; his brother Richard Hollingsworth; his sister Virginia Harrison; and his granddaughter Caroline Adelle Semerad.
Dan is survived by his wife of 68 years, Beverly Faye; five children, Beverly Theresa Hollingsworth Vieillescazes (Pierre), Lauren Adelle Hollingsworth, Margaret Christine Hollingsworth Rabun (Mike), Joseph Daniel Hollingsworth, III (Audrey), and Emily Anne Hollingsworth Nientimp (David); four grandchildren, Emma Vieillescazes, Rachel Hollingsworth, Madeline Nientimp and Daniel Nientimp; one great-granddaughter, Anna Adelle Navarria; his brother Jimmy Jackson Hollingsworth (Lourdes), sister-in-law Faye Wilkinson Hollingsworth and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service and celebration of Dan’s life will be held at Trinity Methodist Church in Ruston on Tuesday, March 26, at 11 a.m.  Visitation will be held at Trinity Methodist Church from 9 a.m. until the time of service, under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Homes in Ruston, LA.

Departed: 02/29/2024 (Ruston)
Obituary Preview: Freddie “Susie” Hood Woodard passed away on the morning of Thursday, February 29, 2024, at Northern Louisiana Medical Center, surrounded by her family. She was 93 years old.
Susie was born on January 4, 1931, in Hilly, Louisiana, to Katie and John Hood. She spent most of her childhood in what is now the Goose Creek community of Lincoln Parish and attended St.  Rest Baptist Church with her family. She was a student at Nobles School before moving to Ruston High School, where she graduated with the class of 1947. After high school, Susie began in the Home Economics program at Louisiana Tech University before marrying Homer Woodard, with whom she had six children. The family faithfully attended Alabama Baptist Church near Arcadia. In the early years of their marriage, the Woodards moved as Homer’s work demanded, but they eventually settled down in Ruston and built the home where she lived for the remainder of her life.
Susie’s children—and later grandchildren and great-grandchildren—were the center of her life. She lovingly attended to their needs and saw that they were provided for in the best way possible. An excellent sewist, she sewed clothing for them and made alterations whenever asked. Much to the delight of her family, Susie regularly hosted Sunday lunch, where everyone enjoyed her home cooking (including her exceptional mac-and-cheese and fried chicken). Her grandchildren grew up knowing that going to “Granny’s house” meant they could expect adventure, few rules, and incredible snacks. While building her family, Susie also built an improbable career, finally retiring at 88 years old. She worked as a bookkeeper at her parents’ business, J.L. Hood Lumber Company, and at Ruston Lumber. Later in life, she worked in the Trinity United Methodist Church office before concluding her career working part-time at Louisiana National Bank. Her kindness, infectious smile, and positive attitude cemented her reputation as a beloved co-worker. Susie remained a member of Temple Baptist Church until her passing and was a dutiful participant in the Hearts of Grace Sunday School Class.
Susie is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Jackie Woodard Whitlock; her son, Bart Woodard; sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Joe Fallin; brother, Tinker Hood; and sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Don Love. Left to cherish her memory are her children Lexie Woodard Crawley (Bo), Russell Woodard (Cynthia), Libby Woodard, Brian Woodard (Jenifer) and son-in-law, Howard Whitlock; her grandchildren, Bethany Woodard Kristovich, Nicholas Crawley (Teresa), Katie Whitlock Kimbrough (Allin), Todd Whitlock (Brandi), Brittany Crawley Hunt (Cass), Lexie Woodard Polito (Mike), Dustin Whitlock (Kelsey), Jessica Crawley Habibi (Brian), Russell Woodard, Jr. (Gabrielle), Avery Woodard, Muriel Woodard, Claudia Perry, and Chloe Woodard; and her great-grandchildren, Anna Kristovich, Blake Hunt, Arabella Polito, Zachary Woodard, Mia Whitlock, Emme Hunt, Shelby Whitlock, Lilah Kimbrough, Reese Whitlock, Luke Crawley, Bo Hunt, Norah Whitlock, Olivia Kimbrough, Cohen Whitlock, Ellie Hunt, Kash Habibi, Nash Crawley, Colt Woodard, and Waylon Woodard; sister-in-law, Marie Hood; first cousin, Medrick Canterbury; and, numerous nieces and nephews that still refer to her as “Favorite Aunt Susie”.
A service, officiated by Dr. Reggie Bridges and Rev. Dale Oden with guest speaker and dear family friend, Dorothy Clarkson-Jackson, will be held in the Temple Baptist Church sanctuary on Monday, March 4, at 1 p.m. under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Ruston.  A visitation will be held at 11 a.m. Following the service, her interment will be held at the St. Rest Baptist Cemetery. Pallbearers will be her nephews, Ivin Hood, John Hood, Dennis Love, and Jerry Love, and grandsons Todd Whitlock, Dustin Whitlock, Russell Woodard, Jr.  and Zachary Woodard.
In 2021, at the age of 90, Susie underwent open heart surgery that limited her ability to be totally self-sufficient in her final years. The Woodard family would like to thank Dr. Mark Blackwelder, Dr. Billy Smith, and their staff for attending to her medical needs and providing excellent health care. The family is also grateful for her in-home caregivers from Benton Care Service: Katheryn Baker, Kim Benton, Damonica Brooks, Bobbie Goodjoint, Shaniqua Grant, Linda Mayfield, and Aisha Richburg.

make the most of it, and let God bear good fruit in your life. Our family is most grateful for the beautiful people at the Arbor and Terrace who cared for our beloved Pat while she lived there. We also thank Premiere Hospice for their love and care in her
