Cornelius Grogan, Jr. - May 24, 1931 - May 14, 2024

Departed: 05/14/2024 (Madison)
Obituary Preview: Cornelius Malachi Grogan, Jr., age 92, of Madison, formerly of Carthage and Lake Preston, passed away Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at Madison Regional Health System.
Memorial service will be 11 AM on Wednesday, May 22nd at Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be 5-7 PM on Tuesday at the funeral chapel with a prayer service at 6:45 PM and will continue on Wednesday one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Carthage at a later date.
Cornelius Grogan Jr. was born May 24, 1931, in Sanborn, Iowa to Cornelius Malachi Sr. and Anna Marie (Block) Grogan. The family moved to South Dakota in 1933. In 1936, his mother Anna Marie died giving birth in a snowstorm. Cornelius and his siblings lived at Polo Catholic School until Cornelius was in the 5th grade. He was confirmed in 1939. They lived in the school August through May and came home in the summer with no one to care for them.
In 1943, Cornelius and his brother Bob were sent to Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska under the supervision of Father Flanagan. The movie “Boys Town” was based on Father Flanagan and his life there. The brothers ran away in 1945 hitchhiking to Miller, South Dakota where they lived with their brother Tom's wife Ilene while Tom was in the service. He went to school in Miller and Ree Heights until 8th grade. At the age of 14 Cornelius was hired as a farmhand where he lived with his boss for two years in Harold, SD. At 16 he went to Orient and Blunt to work as a farm hand until moving to Miller at the age of 18.
In 1951, Cornelius married Pearlene Reinhardt in Miller SD. After marriage they began living in a trailer house on Lake Louise. He was drafted into the service in 1952. He was stopped by Army officials as soon as he entered the bus. He had been reclassified to A-3 (deferment indicating that drafting an individual would create hardship on draftees’ family). He was married with a child on the way at the time. He was then hired as a farm hand in Miller, Highmore, and Ree Heights. The interview concluded with a handshake. The man who hired Corneilus told him later he knew he was going to hire him because he could feel the calluses on his hand.
In 1954, they moved to Manchester where he again worked as a farm hand for seven years. In 1961, Kelo Land held a Centennial Gold Rush in Manchester which was set up by Joe Floyd. Cornelius picked up Floyd at the airport which was located on the farm where he was employed. Cornelius, Stickler, and Greyer then started a food stand and named it “Rowdy Yates”. A nod to the Clint Eastwood series “Rawhide”. The Senator, Governor, Lawrence Welk, Captain 11, Wishbone, Clint Eastwood, and 150,000 other people attended the Gold Rush. Cornelius even served Clint Eastwood a sloppy joe free of charge. Each of the food stand men lost $25 apiece. A good amount for the time.
They rented a farm near Iroquois in 1962. One calm night Cornelius went outside to turn off the windmill. He saw a silent aircraft hovering 200 feet off the ground. It had no fumes or lights. He described it as a passenger jet with no wings or propeller but with long windows on the sides. As Cornelius looked up a man inside the aircraft looked down at him. The man had a long skinny face. Cornelius could see the man talking to someone but he only saw one individual in the aircraft. The aircraft took off heading south but within 100 feet the UFO disappeared. It took him years to tell anyone what he had saw.
The couple rented a farm in Carthage from 1965-1968. Later in 1968 they went to a farm auction at the courthouse in Howard and bought a farm acreage Southeast of Carthage. It was here where they raised their five children. In 1984 they sold the family farm and moved to the city of Carthage. They built, owned, and operated Carthage Cable which was the first cable business in Carthage. He was also the Mayor of Carthage until 1996.
He managed the Cabaret in Carthage for a year before moving to Iroquois in 1996 where he owned his own bar.
In 2007, the movie “Into the Wild” was filmed in Carthage. At the same time, the family home in Carthage was up for auction. They cast Cornelius in the bar scene at The Cabaret. He was able to meet Vince Vaughn, Sean Penn, and Emile Hirsch. He was also introduced to the sister and brother-in-law of Chis McCandless during filming.
He moved to Lake Preston, South Dakota in 2008 with Roselyn Sjolie. He helped spray trees at her Greenhouse. They were married in the eyes of God by Reverend Wanda McNeil.
He moved to Madison, South Dakota in 2022. He was the first client for the ICAP Community Health Program in Madison. They featured his picture on their first poster.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-Thomas, John, Lynn Grogan and Kenny Synder; sisters-Doris, Margeret Grogan and Phyliss Snyder.
Survivors include brother-Bob Grogan of Colorado; sons-Gary Grogan of DeSmet and Ricky Grogan of Dell Rapids; daughters-Roxanne (Jeff) Leighton of Madison, Dawn Grogan of Sioux Falls and Patty DeRaad of Sioux Falls; grandchildren-Ryan (Kate) Hanson, Lucas Grogan, Lindsay (Eric) Comes, Kristin (Shane) Molitor, Jesse (Kendall) Olson, Cody (Kristen) Leighton, Damian Leighton, Kelsey Brue, Lee and Jack Wesche, Jacob (Mirrisah) DeRaad, Josh and Jada DeRaad; seven great-granddaughters and one great-great-granddaughter.

Mary Newcomb - March 02, 1935 - March 30, 2024

Departed: 03/30/2024 (Madison)
Obituary Preview: Mary Newcomb, 89, passed away on March 30, 2024 in the Madison Hospital. She was born to Elmer Leno and Dorothy Wood Selgestad in Madison, South Dakota and lived in the area for most of her life, including more than 30 years at her beloved home on Lake Madison.
Mary grew up on the farm, where she preferred working outdoors with her dad, actively assisting with the family’s farming operation. She would spend long summer days in the field, driving tractor and hauling bales. She was proud that she could drive a stick shift by age nine.
Mary attended General Beadle School, located on the campus of what is now Dakota State University, beginning in the first grade, graduating in 1953. In June of 1953, she represented Madison in the state finals of the Miss Universe pageant. Then, eager to experience city life, Mary moved to Sioux Falls where she had an apartment, worked at a bank and enjoyed all the City had to offer with her many friends.
Still looking for adventure, Mary and several of her friends moved to Long Beach, California, where they worked and enjoyed Southern California beach life. Mary returned to Madison, glamorous and tanned, enrolled in college, and immediately captured the attention of Bill Newcomb, who had recently returned from the Navy. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married in Madison in 1955, and by 1960 had four children.
Mary and Bill owned and operated Newcomb Motors, selling and servicing Pontiac, Buick and Cadillac vehicles under their General Motors franchise. Mary could regularly be seen around Madison, four children in tow, driving the latest model Tempest or GTO, looking very cool in the styles of the day, always wearing her signature sunglasses.
Mary and Bill were entrepreneurs, owning and operating additional small businesses in Madison, and eventually opting to start a family farming operation of their own outside of Madison. Mary would later independently invest in real estate, buying and “flipping” homes that she personally renovated, doing everything from demolition and carpentry to design. Her skills were put to the test when she and Bill built their own home at Lake Herman in the 1970’s. Mary’s real estate efforts eventually enabled her to buy her own farm, which provided sustainment for the remainder of her life.
Mary and Bill were close to the large Newcomb and Selgestad extended families and enjoyed many fun holidays and gatherings with the families of their combined nine siblings. For a time in the 1950’s and 60’s, new babies were arriving almost every year, adding to the fun.
Mary had many wonderful friends in Madison and from around the country, with Newcomb Motors providing the opportunity to visit, and be visited by, corporate executives and their spouses. One common theme was that everyone loved Mary and her wonderful hospitality. For many years, they would host friends from around the country for epic annual pheasant hunting excursions and parties. The friends they made were friends for life and greatly enriched the experiences of the Newcomb family. Mary was thought of as a true friend and absolute confidant by her friends.
An important part of Mary’s life was sports, which she both loved to play and watch. The Madison Country Club was a hub of family activity, and Mary worked to promote a junior golf program and ensured all of her children learned how to play. Mary herself became the women’s club champion and was a regular on the links on “Ladies Day”, often bringing along her daughters so they could learn the sport. Mary also loved playing basketball and a basketball hoop was one of the first items to be installed at any new Newcomb home. Her unique shooting style is a fond memory of her children and grandchildren. Mary was also a founder of a women’s jogging club in Madison, an activity that had not been widely adopted at the time.
Mary was a vocal promoter of opportunities for women and girls in sports as well as in education and society. She engaged in her own form of activism in support of equal rights and freedoms for women and girls. She emphatically and repeatedly stressed the importance of a college education and that all careers were options for women. She was proud that all of her children graduated from college and completed post graduate work.
After all of her children had graduated from Madison High School, Mary moved to Sioux Falls and worked in the retail industry for several years. Mary made the most of her Sioux Falls life, enjoying many friends and hosting family and friends at her beautiful town home in Southeastern Sioux Falls. Mary was very artistic and her many homes over the years were beautifully designed and decorated, often with some form of art she had made herself. She always made her houses into homes that were welcoming and warm to friends and family. In 1988, Mary returned to Madison, purchasing a home at Lake Madison, where she primarily resided until her death. Mary’s focus was by then her grandchildren and visiting Grandma at the lake is a fond memory of all her grandchildren. Her oldest grandchild, Nicholas, remembered her and the lake times in this way: “We all loved her deeply and have countless happy memories to share about her. My favorites are from our time at her lake house, where we enjoyed simple pleasures like getting dirty, fishing, and exploring without parental supervision. It was a childhood filled with adventure, curiosity, and testing boundaries.”
Mary also devoted her time and expertise to constructing and operating an apartment complex in Dell Rapids, SD on the land of her grandparents, Alfred and Marie Angel Wood. She served as sole trustee of the Wood Family Trust until shortly before her death.
Mary is survived by her children Sherri (Stephanie Ketter), Kihei, HI, Parker, Wayzata, MN, Stacy (Rick Weiland) Sioux Falls, SD and Lex, Oldham, SD; five grandchildren, Nicholas, Adam, Carter, Taylor and Alex Newcomb-Weiland, all of Sioux Falls; two great grandchildren, Emerson and River Newcomb-Weiland, also of Sioux Falls; and three sisters, Jean Bakke, Webster, SD, Joann Redmann, Renton, WA, and Susan Deniger, Port Orchard, WA. She was a favorite aunt of the many nieces and nephews who survive her. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Leon, of Madison, SD and Vincent, Yankton, SD, a nephew, Greg Bakke, of Webster, SD and a niece, Cindy Hein-Petzoldt, of Sioux Falls, and her former husband.
Visitation and funeral service will be held on Friday, April 5 at the Rustand-Weiland Funeral Chapel in Madison. The family will be present from 1-2 PM and the funeral service will begin at 2 PM, with a reception following at Nicky’s. Interment will be Saturday at St. Ansgar Cemetery, Colton, SD, where she will be laid to rest next to her beloved parents. The Kahler-Brende Funeral Home of Dell Rapids and the Rustand-Weiland Funeral Home of Madison are in charge of arrangements.

Terrance William Ryan was born November 10, 1937 in St. Louis, MO to John Francis “Frank” Ryan and Josephine (Foreman) Ryan. The family moved to Aurora, MO when he was 7 years old and he went on to graduate from Aurora High School in 1955. He loved the small-town life of southwestern Missouri, a wonderful older brother to his sweet sister, Sheila. Hunting and cave exploring were his pastimes along with blowing up whatever target with cherry bombs.
After graduation and a year at Wentworth Military Academy, he enrolled at Purdue University and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  While attending Purdue University, Terry was part of the twenty-four-man Purdue Drill Team, which holds the title of, “The Finest Collegiate Drill Team in the United States.”  He was also an ROTC member graduating as a Lieutenant in the Army. His first assignment was in Germany in 1961 just as the Berlin Wall went up. He spent 4 years there. While serving in Germany, Terry learned to ski in the Alps, a hobby that became a life-long passion, one which he taught and passed on to generations of family and friends.
In 1966 he was assigned as an Advisor to a Vietnamese Ranger Group operating in the highlands well away from any base. He loved his time with these men eating off the land with a bowl of rice a day. While on assignment with them he was hit by sniper fire and spent several months recuperating in Japan. He asked for a second tour and went back to serve with a U.S. Special Forces group operating on the Ho Chi Minh trail in Laos and Cambodia. After his tour he was assigned to teach ROTC at Indiana University. At the same time, he got a Master’s degree in Student Personnel and decided to resign his commission and work in Student Personnel in Higher Education. He then spent the next 35 years guiding, mentoring, teaching, and leading DSU students and his Student Affairs team. He loved it; although everyone notes he had trouble with his famous words, " Let me be brief". He met his future wife, Lynn, while at Indiana University and they married in June of 1973. They moved to Madison in 1975 and were only going to stay a couple of years. They celebrated their 50th anniversary this past June. Their daughter, Colleen, was born in June of 1980 and even though Terry had lived in the jungles of Vietnam he never liked the "surprises" that changing her diaper might bring. But he took great pride in teaching her to ski, calling her “My little skier.”
He loved the water, working outside, chopping firewood, running, working out, and reading. He dedicated his career to helping students and continued teaching college algebra for 10 years after retiring from student services. He stayed involved in DSU athletics by running the game clock for DSU football & giving an opening season address to the football team. He also ran the shot clock for DSU basketball games. Jesse’s family strongly encourages memorials be sent instead of flowers. Please send memorials for Kade & Jace Bruns Trust at First Premier Bank, 202 NW 2nd St., Madison, SD 57042.
On October 6, 1978, Jesse was born the middle child of three to Dan and Linda (Bachmann) Bruns of Madison, SD. Jesse graduated from Madison High School in 1997 and attended Dakota State College in Madison where he played his favorite sport, football. We all loved number 38, Jesse's football number that was retired from Madison High School. Jesse's sons wear the number 38 on their jerseys today. Jesse left college to pursue his dream of raising Registered Angus cattle with his dad. Together Jesse and Dan built a successful Angus herd for over 40 years. An annual bull sale is held at the farm every year in March, but sadly, he will not be there this year. Jesse was a member of the American Angus Association. He also assumed the dealership for Gallagher Fence. Jesse was also employed at Madison Livestock, Madison, SD, for 30 years where he gained the respect and trust of many cattlemen.
Jesse was highly respected in the cattle business throughout South Dakota. Jesse was a kind and generous man with the ability to talk to anyone and make friends. His smile was contagious and anyone who met him became his friend.
Jesse was an avid fan of SDSU and the Madison Bulldogs and he rarely missed an event his sons were involved in. He loved coaching both of them in football and baseball (as his dad stated I think he is reliving his high school years through his boys). With all of that being said, Jesse's sons were his pride and joy.
Jesse is survived by his wife, Kari (Heinricy) Bruns; 3 sons, Kade and Jace Bruns and John Callies; mother, Linda Bruns; brother, Don Bruns (niece Witten Bruns) and sister Kaylynn Bruns (nieces Addison and Paislee Cooney) all of Madison, SD; mother and father-in-law, Jim & Alana Heinricy; brother-in-law, Adam Heinricy (Abi Plawman) of Sumner, WA; his “adopted brother” (cousin) Matthew Bruns; aunts & uncles, Kevin and Crystal Manthey, Dawn Holley, Ron Bruns, Gary Bruns, Bill (Diane) Bruns and Keith Gates and several cousins and his dogs Jack and Ruby.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dan (2019); grandparents, Don & Ardeth Bachmann and Eldyn & Ellen Bruns; brother in-law, Chad Cooney and aunts, Gloria Gates and Gwen Bruns and his two dogs Bull and Lucy.
There were many things Jesse was passionate about and the ones we will always remember him for are his love for his boys, his family, his dogs, and his love for the cattle business.

Joanne Marilyn Petersen was born on March 22, 1933 to Elmer and Pearl (Eggebraaten) Petersen. Together with sisters Rochelle and Kathy, the family lived outside of Rutland on the family farm. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the person's passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who need to know about the funeral or memorial service. They also provide a sense of closure for loved ones and help to notify others who may not have been aware of the person's passing.

Who writes an obituary?

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, such as the date, time, location, and any special requests or instructions.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 1-2 paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the notice and make it more meaningful to readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to ask about their submission process and deadlines. Some newspapers may have online submission forms or email addresses where you can send the obituary text and any accompanying photos.

Can I publish an obituary online?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?
