Thomas Timberlake Perry - June 21, 1947 - May 12, 2024

Departed: 05/12/2024 (La Grange)
Obituary Preview: Tom Perry June 21, 1947 - May 12, 2024
La Grange- Thomas Timberlake Perry was released from the cares of this life on May 12, 2024. He was born in Lenoir County to the late Francis Andrew Perry, Jr. and Susan Austin Timberlake Perry on June 21, 1947. In addition to his parents, Tom is preceded in death by a brother, Charles Perry.
It goes without saying that Tom marched to the beat of his own drum. He was known to push the limits, but was always willing to accept the consequences of his actions. Tom was a “goof” at heart, fun-loving, and mischievous. He was a master chef in the kitchen, never quite mastered the art of cleaning it up when he was finished. Tom’s family recall him being the definition of a Jack-of-all-trades. Truly one of a kind, Tom’s passing transitioned him from unique to complete.
Family was at the forefront of Tom’s life. His grandsons loved their “D-Daddy” and Tom worshiped the ground they walked on. Loving, considerate, and protective, Tom regularly told his wife and girls not to worry, that he would “take care of it” no matter what “it” may be. He always followed through with that promise. No one left Tom’s presence without the hearing the phrase passed down from his grandmother and mother, “Love you the best!” Tom’s dogs were also a part of his family. He treated them as if they were his children, always instructing Debbie to “tell the dogs I love them” when he wasn’t able to.
His dogs weren’t the only animals that Tom enjoyed being around. He was well-known for his complete lack of fear when it came to snakes. When farming tobacco, Tom was always required to go into the tobacco barn first to check for snakes before anyone else would enter. He fearlessly picked them up and removed them to another location away from everyone. From the everyday green snake to a water moccasin, Tom was never afraid to care for God’s slithery creation.
A service of love and remembrance will be held at La Grange Christian Church on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 11 a.m. Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery in La Grange. Family will greet friends at the cemetery immediately following the service.
Tom is survived by his wife of 35 years, Deborah Herring Perry; daughter, Jessica Gorall (Dwight); a niece whom he loved and raised as his daughter, Elise Tracey; grandchildren, Ryan (Samantha) and Benjamin Gorall; siblings, Francis Andrew “Drew” Perry, III, Fleeta Griffith, Lucinda Mitchell, Janyce Gagne, Loretta Holden, Gwen Ford, and Edwin Perry; along with a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews; and his beloved canine companions.

Ann Duncan Smith - May 07, 1943 - April 27, 2024

Departed: 04/27/2024 (La Grange)
Obituary Preview: Ann Duncan Smith passed away at her home on Saturday, April 27, 2024. She is now breathing easily and free from pain and the sorrow of loss. Ann was born on May 7, 1943 in Handley, Texas to the late Thomas and Muriel Duncan. She was married to the late Charles R (Bob) Smith.
Ann was fiercely independent and strong willed, with a heart filled full of compassion and care for others. As a mama, she loved her children with all she had (and her traits may have been passed on strongly to all 3 of her children). Losing her two sons recently was a heavy weight she never expected to carry. She realized just how much she was loved as she was surrounded and supported by her family during this past year.
By trade, Ann was a retired Registered Nurse. She worked at Wayne Memorial Hospital as a Labor and Delivery Nurse and served on the Seven Springs Volunteer Rescue Squad for many years. She was a faithful part of the FLOK (For the Love Of Kids) and Threads of Love ministries at Garris Chapel Church. While Ann served in all of these capacities, this was her way of loving on others. It was her gift. She had a way of taking care of others for as long as she possibly could. When her health declined, she sought new ways to care for others. The skills she learned growing up, like sewing, helped her to share with others later in life.
Ann was a wonderful mother, but loved being a grandmother even more. From picking strawberries and grapes to playing board games, Grandma/Nanny was always eager to spend time with them. Her passion for Christmas really lit up in her multiple and fun Christmas trees.
The last few years have been extra challenging for Ann. As a woman who does things on her own, having to lean on others was never easy. She was not always able to serve others as her heart longed. She loved her church, Garris Chapel, even though she was not able to physically attend. Her support of her church family was always a part of her. While her independent spirit never wavered, neither did her love and compassion. To know Ann was to love Ann.
A Service to celebrate Ann’s life will be held at Garris Chapel Church on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at 6:00 pm. A time of visitation will take place following the service at the church.
Ann is survived by her daughter, Kaye Smith of Cape Carteret; her daughter-in-law, Donna Smith of La Grange; sister, Tommie Monroe of Hurst TX; sister-in-law, Linda Duncan, Palo Pinto TX; grandchildren, Dylan Smith, Wesley Smith, Callie Davis, Elliott Davis, Addison Smith; great-grandchildren: Carly Billingsley, Audrey Billingsley, Bentley Billingsley, Reid Smith; and a special, dear friend, Pat Mitchell.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Ann was preceded in death by her sons, Bob Ivey Smith and Charles T (Tom) Smith; brother, Jamie Duncan; and sisters, Mary Jo Turner and Charline Keisel.

Charles Hooten - March 20, 1940 - April 17, 2024

Departed: 04/17/2024 (La Grange)
Obituary Preview: Charles Hooten March 20, 1940 – April 17, 2024
Tarboro-Charles Raymond Hooten, 84, finished his course of faith and stepped into life eternal with his Savior on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. Charles was born in Lenoir County to the late Jesse Pettigrew and Faye Dawson Hooten on March 20, 1940. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Alice Summerlin Hooten; his second wife, Louise Eason Hooten; his siblings, J.P. Hooten, Doris Hooten Anderson, and Chester Hooten; and his nieces, Karen Hooten Fulcher, Jean Hooten Davis, and Jane Hooten Khalilian-Reese.
Charles began his career with Burlington Mills in 1963 and was faithfully employed with the same company for the duration of his career, retiring in 2001. Marrying Alice Summerlin in December 1982, the two enjoyed a happy life of love and devotion for over 28 years until her death in January 2003. After her death, Charles was truly blessed to find and marry Louise Eason in April 2005. Though their life together was short, they enjoyed six happy years.
Getting together with family was a highlight for Charles, especially when food was involved. He often spent the weekend with his late niece, Jean Davis, where she would prepare wonderful meals much to his enjoyment. In later years, he enjoyed his weekly visit with his niece, Sandra, where a trip to Wilbur’s Barbecue was always in order. He loved a good meal, but nothing made it better than a little dessert to top it off. Grateful for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, Charles lived his faith openly, readily able to quote scripture and always wanting to be involved in church. When he moved away from Tarboro to live in Goldsboro, he attended Faith Free Will Baptist Church as often as he could. While Charles’s life wasn’t always easy and he, like us all, often fell short of the glory of God, he was keenly aware of God’s mercy and grace and lived a life of testimony to Romans 8:38-39: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
A service to remember Charles’s life will be held by the graveside at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Wilson, at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2024.
Charles is survived by his nieces and nephews, Sandra Cromer, Jay Hooten (Andrea), Billy Hooten (Julie), Donna Dickens (John), Phyllis Phillips (Charles), and Bryan Hooten (Amy).

William L Britt - April 26, 1939 - April 17, 2024

Departed: 04/17/2024 (La Grange)
Obituary Preview: W.L. Britt April 26, 1939 – April 17, 2024
La Grange-William L. Britt, 84, was welcomed at the gates of Heaven on Wednesday, April 17, 2024. W.L. was born in Wayne County to the late Theodore Britt and Ludi Jernigan Britt on April 26, 1939. In addition to his parents, W.L. was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Edith Thornton Britt; and his brother and sisters.
Beginning his career at the Piggly Wiggly on Lionel Street in Goldsboro, W.L. learned the skills of butchery and started a career that lasted 62 years. Working for various companies throughout his tenure, W.L. retired from the Food Lion in La Grange.
Hardworking as the day is long, W.L. had a work ethic that few could achieve. His family looked forward to every Tuesday, as this was his day off. While there are many things that could have occupied his free time, W.L. always chose family. Wanting to raise his children in a Christian home with principled lives, he believed in church, discipline, and hard work for everyone.
Always up for a ride, W.L. would drop everything when given the opportunity to travel. Whether taking a long trip or riding down the road, sights would remind W.L. of times gone by. A master story teller, he’d captivate you instantly in his recollections and make you feel as if you were right there with him in his memory.
A highlight for W.L.’s week was Wednesday when the Weekly Gazette came in the mail. Reading Glen Penuel’s “In and Out of La Grange” column and looking for the joke of the week brought great delight. He’d add that joke to his collection, as he always had something funny to say.
No matter where W.L. was, he was sure to run into somebody he knew. Deeply involved in his community, he was a longtime member of the La Grange Volunteer Fire Department and a charter member of the La Grange Rescue Squad. He also served as president of the local Woodmen of the World.
A soldier in the army of God, W.L. was promoting the cause of Christ everywhere he went, in thought, word, and deed. Whether discussing the scripture with friends or walking around singing “Amazing Grace,” you knew W.L.’s heart by his actions and demeanor.
When retirement came for W.L., time with his family always to precedence. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren lit up his world, and his most prized title was PaPa Britt. While this was the name given him by his grandkids and greats, many in the area thought of him with equal affection. Gathering with the men at Ken’s grill, heading out on a fishing trip, or enjoying breakfast with his son and grandson were simple pleasures that made life complete.
If you’ve never had W.L.’s barbecue chicken, you’ve never had the best. His sauce couldn’t be beat and he was a master griller. He assisted with many fundraisers at church while attending La Grange Church of God. In recent years, W.L. faithfully worshiped his Lord at Tabernacle Pentecostal Holiness Church in Goldsboro.
A service of love and remembrance will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 at Rouse Funeral Home with Pastor Ronnie Heath officiating. Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
W.L. is survived by his children, Tony Britt (Darlene), Lisa McLeod (Rocky), and Jeff Britt (Amy); grandchildren, Matt Cartwright, Ashley Bradley (Tony), Kaylen McLeod, Brandon Bizzell, Hunter Britt (Hannah), Jack Britt, Jacob Robbins (Olivia), and Brandon Robbins (Nicolle); great-grandchildren, Brayden Chavis, Makenna Chavis, Kinsley Robbins, Grayson Cartwright, and Peyton Bradley; as well as Tracy Bissette, and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2024 at Rouse Funeral Home.

Tim Colie - March 14, 1958 - April 16, 2024

Departed: 04/16/2024 (La Grange)
Obituary Preview: Tim Colie March 14, 1958 – April 16, 2024
La Grange-Timmy “Tim” Rick Colie, 66, quietly departed this life for life eternal on Tuesday evening, April 16, 2024. Tim was born in Lenoir County to the late Eugene “Gene” Thomas Colie and Peggy Bryan Colie on March 14, 1958.
A devoted Christian, Tim’s primary goal in life was to maintain a close relationship with his Lord. He lived his faith openly and worshiped regularly at Institute United Methodist Church. Serving in the church where he was raised and where he was married, Tim gave back to his church family and offered his ministry to the Lord through service in leadership. Most recently, he chaired the Church Council. On Men’s Sunday, he joined the ranks of the choir, and he utilized his new skill of piano playing numerous times during worship services.
Proud of his family, Tim poured his time into the things that made them happy. When you saw Tim, Diane was usually right by his side. His children took precedence in his life, and he was always invested in the activities of his grandkids. If a field trip was coming up, Tim would make sure to be a part of the crew. Surf fishing with his brother-in-law, John, was always a fun getaway, and any time spent with his twin sister and baby sister was valued. In whatever sport his nieces and nephews were involved, he’d show up for the game to cheer them on. Wherever they lived, Tim easily made friends and considered them a special part of his family as well.
A deep love for our country was engrained into Tim’s being. Serving with the United States Navy for thirty years, Tim retired with the rank of Master Chief. Serving in three wars and traveling all over the world, his devotion to his country was strong and fierce. Following his distinguished career, he continued for ten years as the second-in-command with Honor Bridge.
Known for his kind and gentle nature, Tim was mild-mannered and calm since he was in his mother’s womb. Never one to be in the midst of conflict, he’d simply walk away if anything became heated. He loved with his whole heart and genuinely cared about everyone he knew. He looked for the good in all and only spoke when he had something positive to say.
While Tim battled cancer, he took each day as a gift and lived life to the fullest. Never complaining about his condition, he simply walked by faith and found joy in everything. Wanting to learn to play piano, he began weekly lessons and practiced daily. He was a regular golfer with the Senior group at Falling Creek Country Club, and he pulled for his beloved Carolina Tarheels every time they played. Tim’s return to North Carolina was mainly to take care of his mother in her final years, but it was as much of a blessing to him as it was to others. He rekindled many old friendships, fell in love with home all over again, and often said, “This is right where I need to be.”
A service of love and remembrance will be held at 3:00 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home on Sunday, April 21, 2024 with Pastor Linda Grider officiating. Committal with military honors will follow at Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home on Saturday, April 20, 2024.
Tim is survived by his wife, Diane; sons, Dustin Colie and wife, Ashley and Nickolas Colie; grandchildren, Christian and Chloe; twin sister, Kim C. Hallow and husband, John; baby sister, Gina Colie; his faithful canine companions, Eli and Abby; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to her parents, Rachel was preceded in death by her siblings, Basel, Warren, Andrew, and Edward Hildreth, Janie Sides, and Mary F. Turner; as well as her beloved dog, Buddy.
With a marriage lasting nearly 63 years, Rachel and her husband, Mickey, built a life they loved. She was loving mother to her three children and the best “Grandma” her grandchildren could ask for. No one’s cooking compared to Rachel’s. She enjoyed preparing meals and watching her family enjoy each dish. A fan of the Duke Blue Devils, her support only waivered when they lost and she needed to pull for State. She was employed with Lenoir County Public Schools for nearly 19 years and was a longtime member of Harper Southern Presbyterian in Albertson.
A service of love and remembrance will be held at Rouse Funeral Home on Monday, April 15, 2024, at 2 p.m., with committal following at Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation in the hour before the service, as well as other times at the home.

Diane Dean - November 14, 1949 - April 12, 2024

Departed: 04/12/2024 (La Grange)
Obituary Preview: Diane Martha Dean November 14, 1949 – April 12, 2024
Dudley-Diane Martha Dean, 74, was welcomed home by her Lord and by her husband on Friday, April 12, 2024. Diane was born in Plymouth, Massachusetts on November 14, 1949 to the late Edward H. Bennett, III and Phyllis E. Jenner Bennett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 25 years, Lonnie Norman Dean, Jr.
Though born in the North, Diane would tell you that she moved to the South as quickly as she could. No matter where she lived, her love for kids was evident. From working in preschools to running an in-home daycare and cherishing the moments with her own grandchildren, Diane was happy to be in the presence of little ones. Her skills in crafting were the perfect complement to her love for children.
At home, Diane’s craft room was where she spent much of her time. She was a master at creating beautiful scrapbooks, and could make just about anything with a few pictures of her family.
For nearly twenty-five years, Diane and her husband, Lonnie, were inseparable. Their love knew no bounds, and any time spent together was precious. When Lonnie passed away just over a year ago, Diane’s day-to-day life was changed dramatically. Though carrying on with the affairs of the day, her grief over his absence was always on her mind. Just as she had lived her entire life, Diane continued to face her adversities head on and persevere. Through it all, she held hope in the promise of reuniting with Lonnie again.
Diane’s personality was magnetic, and she connected with people quickly. Building a relationship with Diane was easy, for she loved with her whole heart. Her love for people was only surpassed by her love of the Lord. Diane was a member at Generations Church and looked forward to every opportunity to join with fellow believers in ministry. Just a few weeks ago, she prepared over 700 stuffed eggs for the annual Easter Egg Hunt. Her love of Jesus and those who shared her faith created a great community that Diane loved.
A service of love and remembrance will be held at Rouse Funeral Home on Saturday, April 20, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends in the hour prior to service. Committal will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Diane is survived by her sons, Christopher (Lori) Karampatsos, Phillip (Tammy) Karampatsos, Rev. Jason (Jennifer) Karampatsos, and Bella-Lynn (Loyce) Schofield; step-son, Lonnie (Kimberly) Dean; step-daughter, Pamela (Robbie) Reinhold; grandchildren, Alicia, Melvin, Alexis, Mark, Beverly, Bobby, Matthew, Hannah, Deborah, Shantel, Cameron, Ella, Autumn, Hailey, and Christian; great-grandchildren, Chase "Bean" Daelyn, Asher, and Sienna; older brother, Daniel Bennett; younger sister, Jodi McNamara; as well as her fur babies, Maxwell, Maggie, and Misty.

Ruth Ellen Hooten - December 26, 1932 - April 09, 2024

Departed: 04/09/2024 (La Grange)
Obituary Preview: Ruth Ellen Hooten December 26, 1932 – April 9, 2024
Bucklesberry-Ruth Ellen Sutton Hooten, 91, was welcomed home on Tuesday morning, April 9, 2024. Delighting in the presence of her Lord, her joyous reunion was filled with many who finished their course before her. Born on December 26, 1932, Ruth Ellen was the youngest child of Wesley Bryan and Violet Ruth Sutton.
With a love for home, Ruth Ellen spent her entire ninety-one years on the same piece of land in the heart of Bucklesberry. Raised on the family farm in the house built by her grandparents, she relocated just one-tenth of a mile south when she married the love of her life, Chester. There, the two raised their family in a Christian home where the love of God and neighbor along with the value of hard work were paramount.
From sun up to sun down, Ruth Ellen was dedicated to her family and work on the farm. Maintaining her own garden, she would plant, weed, and harvest only to follow that work with cooking, canning, or freezing what she harvested. This was in addition to maintaining her home, caring for her children, and cooking three meals a day. When evening came, she was right out with the rest of the family pulling weeds, digging potatoes, or whatever was left to be done. As busy as she was, there was still time for cross stitch and crochet, and an evening view of The Young and the Restless and Bold and the Beautiful on her VHS recordings.
Many can attest to the vast amount of delicious food that was created by the work of Ruth Ellen’s hands. Sunday lunch was an every week occurrence with a buffet of great magnitude. For a time, this meal was preceded with one on Saturday evening as another chance to gather her big family around the table. Dinner time in the summer was a meal just as big as Sundays, as Ruth Ellen prepared for all the hands working in tobacco. There’s no counting how many chocolate chip cookies, batches of fudge, or square-layered cakes were made in her kitchen. When someone passed away, Grandma was sure to visit the family with a freshly-made cake in hand. Shut-ins were often served a meal from her kitchen, as she always made enough to share with others.
A life of simple faith, Ruth Ellen started and ended her day in conversation with the Lord. The Upper Room or Our Daily Bread was read every morning, followed by reading a passage in the Bible. Every meal was started with returning thanks, and every evening she bowed on her knees to offer prayers of thanksgiving, pardon, and intercession. Going to church was a way of life, and she was present when the doors were opened for as long as she was able. Most notably, she cared for her neighbors and lived out the commandment of Jesus to love one another.
There is no recounting the numerous ways Ruth Ellen cared for her family. Every morning, she made breakfast for Chester and had his place all prepared. On Sunday, his clothes were ironed and during the week, they were laid out and ready. She raised her children and, when grandchildren came along, she became a second mother to them. Any care and compassion that she received from her family in her last years was simply a return of thanks for the countless ways she blessed them over the years. One of Ruth Ellen’s biggest wishes was to remain home for the duration of her life. The family is grateful that her wish was fulfilled and indebted to her caregivers that made sure her quality of life was superb: Debbie Anderson, Becky Croom, Kristi Easter, Angie Herring, Kim Langston, Karen Pridgen, Delores Stallings, and the late Loretta Morgan. More than caregivers, each became part of Ruth Ellen’s family.
A service of love and remembrance will be held at Hickory Grove Church of Bucklesberry at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 14, 2024 with Rev. Robert Flynn and Rev. Norma Roberts officiating. The family will receive friends in the hour prior to service in the Fellowship Hall. Committal will follow at the Sutton Family Cemetery on Sutton-Hooten Road.
Ruth Ellen leaves behind a family that loved her as much as she loved them. She is survived by her children, Phyllis Hooten Phillips and husband, Charles, Sandra Hooten Cromer, and Bryan Hooten and wife, Amy; seven grandchildren, Joshua Mewborn and wife, Kari, Jaimie Mewborn Kelly and husband, Jason, Jacob Mewborn and wife, Laura Beth, Timothy Fulcher and wife, Brooke, McKayla Hooten Harlos and husband, Josh, Lauren Hooten Hughes and husband, Chris, and Micah Hooten and wife, Emily; thirteen great-grandchildren, Jonah Mewborn, Drew Mewborn, Levi Mewborn, Chester Reid Fulcher, Ellen Mewborn, Addie Jo Fulcher, James Randolph Kelly, Todd Fulcher, Sarah Harlos, Sybil Ruth Mewborn, Oliver Hooten, Isaiah Harlos, and Anderson Hooten; long-time best friend, Evelyn Sutton; along with many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ruth Ellen was embraced at the gates of Heaven by her husband of 69 years, Chester Hooten, daughter, Karen Sue Hooten Fulcher and husband, Barry; son-in-law, Dr. Bill Cromer; siblings, Blanche Whittington, Sue Faulkner, Billie McPherson, and Allen Sutton; and a special niece, Laura Ruth Polselli.

Lorita Huffines Fulghum - November 14, 1952 - March 25, 2024

Departed: 03/25/2024 (La Grange)
Obituary Preview: Lorita Fulghum November 14, 1952 - March 25, 2024
La Grange- Lorita Huffines Fulghum went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 25, 2024. She was born in Nashville, TN to the late Cora Edwards Goodman and Morris Goodman, Sr. on November 14, 1952. In addition to her parents, Lorita was preceded in death by her daughter, Malissa Smith; granddaughter, Lindsey Johnson Whitley; and brother, Thomas Goodman.
Never one to meet a stranger, Lorita would strike up conversation with everyone she came in contact with. She was a beloved server at the café in Neuse Sport Shop for many years. Its patrons knew her by name and visited for the conversation as much as for the food. Whether working or out and about, Lorita always looked her best. Her teased hair and winged eyeliner was her signature style well before it became a popular trend.
Though her opinions were strong and would, without doubt, be heard, Lorita believed in honesty and doing the right thing. Whether from intrigue or disdain, Lorita’s cocked eyebrow often spoke her mind before her lips. She believed in the Word of God and spent time in scripture every morning when she awoke. She rarely missed a sermon by Steven Furtick and enjoyed his sermons and services on television. A fan of Westerns and Little House on the Prairie, Lorita could often be found enjoying a good show and a hot cup of coffee.
Only second to God was Lorita’s family. She was a loving mother and treasured her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as precious jewels. While she is gone temporarily from sight, Lorita will forever remain in their hearts and memories.
A time of visitation will be held at Rouse Funeral Home on Friday, March 29, 2024, from 2-3:30 p.m.
Lorita is survived by her daughter, Michelle Matthews Johnson; grandchildren, Scotty Johnson (wife and children), Grace Johnson, Briana Johnson (daughter, Rosalee), Shannon Herring (husband, Tyler Herring and children, Malachi, Douglas, Camden and Kylie), Tabatha Barwick (husband, Justin, and children, Colton and Harper), as well as great-grandchildren, Isabella Whitley, Anthony Whitley, and Ruth Ann Whitley; former son-in-law, Douglas Whaley; and five siblings.

Mary Hutton Colie - December 21, 1936 - March 22, 2024

Departed: 03/22/2024 (La Grange)
Obituary Preview: Mary Hutton Colie December 21, 1936 – March 22, 2024
La Grange-Mary Martha Hutton Colie, 87, was welcomed into the presence of her Lord on Friday, March 22, 2024. Mary was born in Covington, Kentucky to the late James Fred and Esther Leola Beers Hutton on December 21, 1936. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two siblings, James Fred Hutton, Jr. and Edna Reed; and her husband of almost 63 years, Rev. Willard Colie, Sr.
Growing up in rural Kentucky, Mary learned early on the value of hard work and the commitment of family. Losing her mother at an early age, Mary quickly stepped in as a caretaker and provider for her family. With her father working as an engineer with the railroad, Mary’s fascination for trains was deeply rooted. Whether watching them pass by or riding as a passenger, there was no prettier sound than that of the train whistle.
Though Mary never served in military service, she was devoted to her country and those who served through constant and faithful prayer. Having received a list of names of servicemen and picking one to pray for, Mary didn’t realize the name she chose would soon become the love of her life. Through fervent prayer and pen pal communication, Mary and Willard grew closer to each other. Before they even met, they recognized that the Lord had brought them together.
Devout in her Christian faith, Mary served her Lord in thought, word, and deed. Her musical talents were offered up in praise alongside the talents of her family. With Willard on rhythm guitar, Mary on bass, and their son, Mickey, on lead guitar, the trio enjoyed singing and playing old gospel favorites together.
Hardworking and determined, Mary worked many years as an inspector in the shirt factories. When she came home, cooking, cleaning, and caring for her children while helping her husband with the farm were duties she gladly attended. The gathering of her family around the table was one of her greatest joys, and her pride in each of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was evident.
Of all the serene beauty in the world, Mary thought God’s best artwork was found in the mountains. No matter the season, there was beauty to behold in the rolling hills and steep peaks.
A graveside service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery with Rev. Mickey Colie officiating.
Mary is survived by her six children, Rev. Willard “Mickey” Colie Jr., Dawn Renee Colie Price and husband, Eddie, Anita Ann Colie Stanley, April Lee Colie, Melodia Lynn Colie Outlaw and husband, Tony, and Kim Dee Colie Hughes and husband, Cary; daughter-in-law, Lisa Boothe; eleven grandchildren, Robert Colie (Delilah), Bobby Colie, Raven Colie, Sierra Colie, Ryan Boothe (Ashley), Ethan Price, Brianna Colie, Jamie Outlaw, Scott Outlaw (Jennifer), Alex Hughes and Jordan Hughes; nine great-grandchildren, Kevin, Logan, Tyler, Ayden, Corbin, Caroline, Loclyn, Emma, Gracie, and Oaklay; sister, Alma Lou Parker; and special friends, Francisco and Cassandra Mendez and their daughters, Arianna and Nathalia.

Obituary Preview: Wendell Whitman October 24, 1938 - March 14, 2024
Goldsboro- Arthur Wendell Whitman Sr., 85, quietly and peacefully passed away on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Wendell was born in Wayne County to the late Jesse Willard Whitman and Ardell Hardy Whitman on October 24, 1938.
From early on, it was evident that Wendell was meant to share his life with Margaret Potter. They attended school with one another from the beginning and eventually became high school sweethearts. Their young love and friendship grew into a marriage that spanned nearly seven decades. They were two peas in a pod and one was never far from the other. Together they raised their son, Wendy, and built a life they loved.
As a father, Wendell was Wendy’s teacher, hero, and best friend. They enjoyed times spent hunting crows, attending baseball games and NASCAR races, and indulging in a good bologna sandwich. The two shared an affinity for working with their hands. From honey-do lists to larger home projects, carpentry consumed many afternoons and weekends.
Wendell had a deep love for baseball and was a diehard Yankees fan. Mickey Mantle was his idol and Wendell always insisted on being #7. Having played the sport in younger years, Wendell leapt at the opportunity to coach when Wendy was old enough to play. Wendell’s love of sports freely flowed into golf and basketball as well.
Wendell was a man of his word. He never meddled and was always a good provider. His priority was to care for his family, and he never failed to do so. Wendell carried himself with pride in his appearance and displayed an aura of confidence. With a loving, caring, and considerate personality, Wendell’s presence was noticed in a crowd. His work ethic stood out and he had a way of making work seem fun. No matter the situation, Wendell remained patient and easy to get along with.
Wendell was a member of the Goldsboro 2nd Ward- Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was also a longtime member of Wayne Masonic Lodge #112. With 40 years of service, Wendell was a dedicated and faithful sales representative with Stone Container Corp.
A service to celebrate and remember Wendell’s life will be held Monday, March 18, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Rouse Funeral Home. Burial will follow at the Potter-Whitman Family Cemetery.

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in newspapers, online obituary platforms, or funeral home websites to inform friends, family, and the community of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify friends and acquaintances, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the grieving family.

Who writes an obituary?
