Robert Lee Harms - May 07, 1943 - March 21, 2022

Departed: 03/21/2022 (Sunfield)
Obituary Preview: Robert Lee Harms, Sunfield, MI May 7, 1943 – March 21, 2022
Bob Harms was a jolly man with an infectious laugh who wore many hats.  He farmed with his family and in partnership with his brother Ted on acreage in the middle of Sunfield Township (Sunny Center Farms) for the most of his life. Bob supported agriculture through his involvement in Farm Bureau with Eaton County, State of Michigan and National activities.  In 1970, he won the State Young Farmer’s Discussion meet and represented Michigan in the National competition, where he achieved second place.  Bob was an active member of Toastmasters International and loved to talk as friends will attest.  After retirement from actively farming, he was hired at Michigan Farm Bureau where he was the manager of their Group Purchasing department for several years. Later he enjoyed a new direction as a crop insurance adjuster where he could be outdoors and travel around the state meeting farm families.
Bob graduated from Michigan State University Short Course which was a two-year program especially for people who were serious about pursuing farming or agricultural related business. He was a big fan of Michigan State sports.
Bob’s favorite activity was early morning fishing at the cottage on Long Lake near Ionia which we shared with dear friends, Pete and Jan Wilford’s family for 35 years.  He loved to sing and was a founding member of the Lakewood Area Choral Society for 20 years and was given the Emeritus honor when he left the group.  He continued delighting audiences with karaoke performances in the Fort Myers Florida community where we spent winter months for many years.  The most requested song for him to sing was “Oh Lord It’s Hard to be Humble”.
Bob held many positions of leadership in The Sunfield United Methodist Church through the years and enjoyed being part for the Worship Leader team, a quartet that led the music. Bob was a 4-H leader and supported our children with livestock projects as well as guiding them into other skills.
Bob married Nancy (Leech) Harms on March 11, 1967 and they celebrated their 55th anniversary at Green Acres where Bob lived for 10 months due to his declining Alzheimer’s disease.  He passed away on March 21, at Sparrow Hospital Ionia with his wife Nancy two children, Laura Harms, granddaughter Emlin Harms, Charles Harms and wife Amy, and family friend Vicki Pontz were all present.
Bob is survived by his wife Nancy and brothers Ted Harms, Carl Harms and Linda, Ned Harms and Shirley, Judy Harris and many nieces and nephews.

John David Gardner - February 12, 1930 - January 26, 2022

Departed: 01/26/2022 (Sunfield)
Obituary Preview: John David Gardner.  Born February 12, 1930, passed away January 26, 2022 (2 weeks before his 92nd birthday) He was 1 of 3 children of Earnest and Gretchen Gardner (Eaton County) and farmed with them until their passing. They had 3 children of their own, Stephen, Delores & Mark. Stephen is the only living heir.  John was a lifelong resident of Eaton Co. Mi. “Staunch Republican” He was married to his wife Rose E. Gardner (Dunning) for 70+ years. Rose is currently living in an assisted living community in Battle Creek, Mi.  Throughout John & Rose’s earlier years of marriage, they took in adult men from Kalamazoo intuitions to live and work on the farm. They also counseled & housed many teenage boys from troubled homes or backgrounds. Some continue to communicate with them today.  He was a lifelong farmer of dairy, beef, eggs, field crops, MM Farm equipment, etc. He was on the board of directors for McDonald dairy of Flint, Mi. for many years. He & Rose greatly anticipated the company’s annual paid trips that were held and conducted throughout large major cities across the USA. He and son Stephen developed, designed & built one of the very first self-sufficient farm operated crop drying, storage and transportation systems in Eaton Co. Many educational and farm group organizations toured the facility. He took great proud into this fledging enterprise. He was also on board of directors of Eaton Farm Bureau, elected to a term on Eaton Co. School board and served on many church groups/originations throughout his lifetime. He and Rose were especially fond of Pastor Lester DeGroot of Nashville Baptist Church.   His Honesty & Integrity was without question. I felt proud to be his son.   The only man I ever knew that didn’t ever smoke, chew, drink, cheat or swear (well only twice that I heard, swear that is). I also believe that his time on school board GREATLY soured him to the day-to-day politics & interworking of a perceived corrupted and arrogant institution.

Jacklyn Ann Beard - May 26, 1954 - September 30, 2021

Departed: 09/30/2021 (Sunfield)
Obituary Preview: Jacklyn Ann Beard, May 26, 1954 – September 30, 2021
Jacklyn Ann Beard, of Lansing, Michigan, entered eternal slumber September 30, 2021. She is preceded in death by her father, John (Jack) A. Beard, Jr. Ms. Beard leaves bereaved her mother, Phyllis Beard of Portland; two brothers, Michael (Carole) of Portland and Dennis of Grand Rapids. She was a doting aunt to three nieces, Pamela Gensterblum of Lansing, Jennifer (Leif) Dykstra of Chicago, Denise (Jason) Llamas of New York; one nephew, Darryl (Anna) of Illinois; and three great nieces and two great nephews. Ms. Beard leaves behind many friends, including close family friend Bill McMurray.
Jacklyn began her professional career with the Tri-County Office on Aging and then was employed by the Lansing Police Department, serving 30 years in multiple civilian positions. Jackie then embarked on a career with the Michigan State University Detroit College of Law. Jackie, benevolent by nature, could often be found volunteering at the Hospice House of Lansing, the McRee House, and McLaren Hospital. She was also a member of the Portland VFW Auxiliary.
Jackie delighted in travel. If she was not attending a quilting retreat or planning a bus trip to the next quilt show, she had her mother in tow traveling to spend time with family spread across the country. She spent many vacations abroad making new lifelong acquaintances and acquiring new treasures in England and Ireland.
Though her family and friends grieve her loss, Jacklyn leaves a rich legacy. She spent many hours sorting through genealogical records and documenting her family history.  Throughout her life, Jackie was an avid quilter. She was an expert in the appraisal of quilts, antique sewing equipment, as well as a true artist with needle and thread. Jackie was an early member of the Capitol City Quilt Guild and several small quilting groups including the Variable Stars.
Jackie’s quilts are cherished keepsakes by all who were fortunate enough to receive one. She often donated them through Quilts of Valor to military veterans, forming a bond with her father’s Sergeant from World War II. Her immediate family members were sure to receive a hand-stitched work of art for major lifetime milestones. Though today is dark and gloomy, we will wrap ourselves in a hand-crafted quilt by Jackie Beard and remember the days she brought us so much joy and happiness.
