Marvin Eugene Kaufman - February 12, 1945 - October 03, 2021

Departed: 10/03/2021 (Atlantic)
Obituary Preview: Marvin E. Kaufman, 76, of Atlantic, Iowa and formerly of Newton, Kansas went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 3, 2021, at Atlantic Specialty Care in Atlantic. He was born to Marvin J. and Elsie Kaufman on February 12, 1945, on his mother’s birthday, in McPherson, Missouri.
In his elementary years in the rural Newton, Kansas area, Marvin attended the Candy, Kelly and Pleasant Acres schools. He graduated from Newton Santa Fe High school and then attended Ozark Bible Institute in Ozark, Arkansas, Grace University in Omaha, Nebraska, and graduated from Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, Missouri. He received his Master’s Degree in Educational Administration at Pensacola Christian College in Pensacola, Florida.
During his time in Missouri, Marvin attended the wedding of his uncle and met the bride’s lovely niece, Marilyn Harder. Romance was certainly in the air and the younger couple were soon united in marriage themselves on June 9, 1967, at the Emmaus Mennonite Church near Whitewater, Kansas.
Marvin taught at Citadel Bible College in Ozark, Arkansas and was Director of Admissions for ten years. He later worked as a school principal for over 30 years in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas and Texas. He was always thrilled to hear from his former students and made a host of friends while working as a sporting goods sales associate for seven years at Walmart in Newton, Kansas. While in Atlantic, he kept busy buying and selling on the local swap site and worked as a funeral assistant at Roland Funeral Service for several years.
Marvin had a multitude of interests and hobbies. He loved fishing, hunting ducks, geese, and coyotes. Racoon hunting was tops! He was also known to treasure hunt with his metal detector in hand and grandkids by his side; they also helped more than one friend find their lost valuables. He enjoyed collecting Hot wheels, Indian arrow heads, knives, old fish tackle, car license plates and working on his Corvettes.
He loved church and would often say, “I can hardly wait till we can go to church Sunday.” Active in church all his life, he served on numerous boards and came to their aid as Assistant Pastor on many occasions. Marvin was most recently a member of the Evangelical Free Church of Atlantic, Iowa. Sharing Jesus with others was very important to him. “To know God and to make him known” was his goal in life. He was constantly reaching out to those who seemed to have few friends. Helping and encouraging others was his pleasure and in turn, his ready smile and constant jokes made the day of everyone around him!
His wife Marilyn and his family were his greatest joy. Taking Marilyn out for a cinnamon roll or out to eat was always a highlight and Sunday afternoon drives were a regular occurrence. Combing the beach with his son Monty, bass fishing with his son Myron, and “antiquing” with his daughter Mindy were his delight. Words can’t describe the elation he found in his grandkids; attending their ball games, fishing or watching the ducks and geese land on the lake at dusk together and teaching them how to identify various birds, were enthralling.
Marvin is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marilyn Kaufman of Atlantic, Iowa; sons, Monty (Linda) Kaufman of Ankeny, Iowa and Myron (Kim) Kaufman of Forsyth, Missouri; daughter, Mindy (Vic) Nichols of Atlantic, Iowa; grandchildren, Jay (Emily), Hannah, Cameron, Clayton, Ada and Jett; brother, Burdette Kaufman of Newton, Kansas; and sisters, Karolyn (Johnny) Atchison, of Arkansas and Luella (Glen) Vance of Kansas.
He is preceded in death by his parents.

Joshua "JJ" Park, Jr. - July 31, 1972 - September 23, 2021

Departed: 09/23/2021 (Atlantic)
Obituary Preview: Joshua Park Jr., 49, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Thursday, September 23, 2021, at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.
Joshua Wallace was born on July 31, 1972, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Joshua Wallace Sr. and Delores Lorraine (Wittmuss) Park. He grew up in Red Oak and Elliott; moving to Atlantic when he was in 4th grade. His love for football started at a very young age, often tackling himself while playing alone in the yard. In high school he worked for his dad at Atlantic Transmission Center and at Hy-Vee. During his junior and senior year, he lived with his sister, Janet and brother, Chuck and they formed an incredible bond and had a significant influence in his life. He always looked to them for advice all the way to the end of his life. Josh graduated from Atlantic High School in 1990.
He was married to Deb Stephenson-Nokes and to this union one son, Tate Ryan was born and Josh became a step-dad to Samantha and Scotty. Josh was later united in marriage to Jacqueline Butler on February 17, 2001, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic…until the end of time. The couple was blessed with two sons, Jacob Christopher and Cole Jackson.
Family, football and fishing were the things that Josh loved most. His boys were his world and he was their biggest fan, right alongside Jacque, cheering them on at all of their activities and encouraging them in life. Josh was a favorite uncle to his niece and nephews. They adored him and loved to dogpile on him any chance they got. He always looked forward to getting together with both sides of the family at various times of the year. You could always find him satisfying his sweet tooth at the candy dish eating one right after another and smiling each time he would open a new piece…especially if there were Kit-Kats. Josh would never turn down a trip for ice cream and would without a doubt order black raspberry and swirl it just like he did as a kid to make sure it was the perfect purple. He was a lifelong Minnesota Vikings fan, continuing to cheer for them to the end even though their games often end wide right. Josh now has the best seat in the house to cheer on the Atlantic Trojans and the Vikings. He may have even played an important part in their win against the Seahawks the Sunday after he passed away. In addition to the Vikings, he would cheer for any team that was playing against the Cowboys! Josh looked forward to casting a line in the water at any farm pond that he could get access too; he could spot them a mile away.
His love of turning wrenches led to an over 30-year career as a diesel mechanic and shop foreman at Atlantic Carriers, Inc. He was a dedicated employee and even when he was away from work, he was always thinking of or talking about work. Most of the time it was acceptable, except for maybe when they were greeting people at his and Jacque’s wedding.
Josh was a gentle giant, he was often described by others as quiet, kind and genuine. His smile would light up a room. Some might also say he was a little OCD after catching him with a tape measure on different occasions when cutting scotcheroos. His four-legged boys, Diesel and Maddox, loved him dearly and will miss greeting him at the end of each day with wagging tails.
Joshua will be deeply missed by his wife, Jacqueline; sons, Tate Ryan Park, Jacob Christopher Park, and Cole Jackson Park; step-daughter, Samantha Eichstadt; mother, Delores Hoover; step-mother, Leona Park; siblings, Sam (Christine) Park, Janet (Keith) Harvey and Charles (Jamey) Park; step-siblings, Don, Gene, Karmen, Kevin, Toni and Matthew; mother-in-law, Ann Butler; father-in-law, Jim (Laurel) Butler; brother-in-law, Chris (Ann) Butler; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and extended family.
He is preceded in death by his father, Joshua Park Sr., step-son, Scott Stephenson; step-sister, Laura Champlin; maternal grandparents, Gerald Wittmuss and Rose Wittmuss; and paternal grandparents, LaRue and Gertrude Park.
A Celebration of Life Memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 9, 2021, at Hillside Hope Assembly in Atlantic. Burial will be in the Atlantic Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be held prior to the service at the church from 12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.
The service will be livestreamed and a link will be available at www.rolandfuneralservice.com and it will also be available for viewing on the funeral home website by noon on Sunday. The church requests that those attending the service please turn off their Wi-Fi so that it does not interfere with the livestream. The livestream will also be shown at Roland Funeral Home for any overflow and for those that would prefer to social distance.

Jettie Gaines - February 02, 1928 - September 11, 2021

Departed: 09/11/2021 (Atlantic)
Obituary Preview: Jettie Gaines, 93, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Saturday, September 11, 2021, at the Exira Care Center.
Jettie Pearl was born on February 2, 1928, in Nettleton, Mississippi the daughter of Herman and Annie Wilmoth (Waycaster) Schlicht. She was the youngest of nine siblings, known as Tootsie to them, and grew up helping pick cotton and corn on the farm. When the work was finished it was time for a game of tag or “mad dog” as they called it. The family had a nanny whose name was Cassy and they all thought the world of her. Early on Jettie gained an appreciation for music and started singing and eventually learned how to play the guitar from her brother-in-law, Alvie. In 1946, the family moved to Iowa and Jettie started working at the Blue Star Canning Factory. Little did she know that a coworker would be her future mother-in-law, encouraging her son, Harry “Bub” Leonard Gaines to meet Jettie. It was a good match; the couple was married on January 1, 1947, by Reverend Darling at the Christian parsonage in Atlantic. Jettie and Bub looked forward to spending quiet time fishing together on the bank of the Nishnabotna River. Most of their married life was spent in Atlantic except for a short time in North Hollywood, California from 1991-1997. They lived in the same home at the corner of First and Birch in Atlantic for 51 years; rebuilding after the original home was destroyed by a fire.Jettie was a stay-at-home mom, and in later years worked evenings at the Atlantic News -Telegraph.
As a child Jettie was baptized and at the age of 88 was delighted to share her faith and testimony in Jesus Christ by being baptized by immersion on September 11, 2016, at First Church of Christ in Atlantic, where she was a member. She also was a member of the Eagles Lodge.
Jettie loved to bowl and she faithfully watched soap operas, especially Days of Our Lives. She was an avid BINGO player, traveling with friends to places near and far. How far, you may ask? Las Vegas and Oklahoma were a few of the stops. Her love of music carried into her adulthood and she looked forward to playing at family gatherings, with her brothers on summer vacations in Mississippi, and with various groups at local events. In Jettie’s eyes there was no time for sitting, she kept busy tending to her large garden which produced gigantic blackberries, shelling hickory nuts, baking, or whatever else she could do to stay productive and on the go. She treasured time with family and reminisced about playing hide and seek with the kids before bed, spending time with the grandchildren which included a few rides in the convertible and on the motorcycle, and going to her uncle’s house in Walnut for a game of washers and homemade ice-cream. Always made from scratch, her apple and peach pies and hickory nut cookies were delicious and a hit at all the family gatherings. In later years she was thankful for the companionship from her dogs, BINGO and Whistle.
Jettie is survived by her daughter, Linda (Larry) Fulk of Hamlin; sons, Herman “Tab” (Rhea) Gaines of Pleasanton, TX and Todd (Barb) Gaines of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren; Scott (Chris) Fulk of Atlantic, Wendi Harrah of Clarion, David Fulk of Dows, Jim (Kristal) Fulk of Atlantic, Jason (Rachel) Fulk of Atlantic, Nicole (Gregory) Holmquist of Everett, WA, Tyler Gaines of Council Bluffs, Jonathan (Jessica) Gaines of Treynor, Rachel Gaines of Council Bluffs, Mary Mills-Foley of Altoona, Natalie (Scott) Suhr of Adair, Joshua (Norma) Gaines of Porter, TX, Megan (Michael) McCarthy of Norfolk, NE and Emily Gaines of Phoenix, AZ; 39 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Annie Schlicht; husband, Harry “Bub” Gaines; son, Harry “Bill” Leonard Gaines III; and siblings, Mable Schlicht, Amanda (Dalton) Snelson, Margaret (Sam) Seymore, Annie May Hodges, John Lee (Virginia) Schlicht, Herman (Frances) Schlicht, Robert (Betty) Schlicht and Alma (Monte) Dillehay.

Larry Ackerman - November 14, 1940 - August 27, 2021

Departed: 08/27/2021 (Atlantic)
Obituary Preview: Larry Ackerman, 80, of Atlantic and formerly of Griswold, died Friday, August 27, 2021, at Allen Place in Atlantic.
Larry Dean was born on November 14, 1940, at home in Griswold, Iowa, the son of Ross John and Velma Augusta (Bees) Ackerman. Growing up he was very close to his Grandpa John and looked forward to spending time with him and having sleepovers. He took piano lessons and often had to miss out on being with his friends so he could practice. Rowdy, ornery, a prankster were a few words that may have described Larry as a kid and there were lots of stories to tell of this but one in particular involved the moving an outhouse . . . hmm. He graduated from Griswold High School in 1957.
Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corp for six years and later the United States Air Force for 4 years. Larry served during the Vietnam War; working in communications. He was proud to be a Veteran and always shared how fortunate he was to see so many areas overseas including Japan, Turkey and Greece. Larry’s favorite by far was Japan; even climbing Mt. Fuji a couple of times.
After returning from the service, he began farming with his father, in addition to working as a Union Construction Laborer. Larry married Catherine (Anderson) Davis and lived in Griswold. They were blessed with two children, Ann and Pat.
Larry was an animal lover but his cat, Tina and schnauzer, Tiger, whom he had as a buddy for 20 years, held a special place in his heart. His ability to build things with bricks was unbelievable, making anything you could imagine including a swimming pool for the kids.
If you could sum Larry’s life up in one word it would be pool; his life revolving around when the next chance to shoot a game would be, whether it be with friends or in a tournament. His name was one to watch out for not only in the local leagues but also in the surrounding states. In 1976, he built his own personal pool hall at his house which he was very proud of; loving to split wood for the wood burning stove he had installed in it.
Larry is survived by his daughter, Ann Ackerman of Griswold; son, Pat Ackerman of Griswold; granddaughter, Darci Ackerman of Atlantic; sister, Sherryl Kehm of Omaha brother, David Ackerman of Council Bluffs; and his nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and brother, Marlin Ackerman.

Helen Stillian - November 27, 1934 - August 24, 2021

Departed: 08/24/2021 (Atlantic)
Obituary Preview: Helen Stillian, 86, formerly of Atlantic and Avoca, Iowa, died Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at the Good Shepherd Healthcare Center in Mason City, Iowa.
Helen was born at her aunt and uncle Louis and Eva Eisterhold’s home near Wiota, Iowa, on November 27, 1934, the daughter of John Gabriel and Marie Lenora (Lamberty) Showers. She grew up on a farm and helped raise her siblings in addition to helping with farm work. Helen graduated from Oakland High School in 1953.
Following graduation, she moved to Atlantic and was married, blessed with two children, Sandy and Charlie. In the years to follow she also lived in Avoca and Omaha, working as grocery store cashier, waitress, bartender, and clerical assistant. Helen returned to Atlantic in 2007 and worked at West Central Development.
Helen was a member of SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She volunteered countless hours helping with various activities and also looked forward to getting together with the women’s group to make quilts. She was committed to her faith, routinely praying the rosary. In addition to the church, she also volunteered her time at the Senior Citizens Center and with the Cass County Democrats.
She was always busy doing activities like tending her flower and vegetable gardens, crafting, puzzling, playing cards or BINGO, and sewing. The sight of fresh flowers brought Helen such joy that she always had a vase in her room at the care center. Fishing was something she loved from a young age and she later enjoyed taking her children and grandchildren to fish with her. Helen also enjoyed travelling. A few of her favorite trips were to Alaska, Canada, Yellowstone National Park, Vatican City and Germany. She had a spunky and social butterfly personality. She was without fail up for a good laugh often giving others a hard time in jest. Helen loved writing letters and was diligent about keeping contact with family and friends through letters, phone calls, and visits.
Helen’s family will remember her as a hard worker who always provided for her family and took care of the things that came along with that. This was a huge undertaking due to her meager salaries so she worked extremely long hours to provide for herself and her family. She liked to cook and was proud of her chili, deviled eggs, cinnamon rolls and holiday candies. Helen loved to share her goodies with others and it was said her peanut clusters and buckeyes were some of the best. Her heart was full when her grandchildren were around, always appreciating their company and help. Helen often rewarded them with one of her tasty treats or gifts from her stash of BINGO prize winnings.
Helen is survived by her daughter Sandy (Brian) Opstvedt, son Charlie (Stephanie) Stillian, grandchildren Shawn (Kim) Opstvedt, Josie Stillian, Chanon Opstvedt, Candace (Philip) Mundt, Hanna Stillian, step grandchildren Annette Helle, Cynthia Helle, and fifteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Lester (Linda) Showers, and sisters Maxine Prochnow, Marge Showers, Jean (Tim) Knapp, Judy Stender, sisters-in-law Dorothy Showers, Margot Showers, Yvonne Nucaro, brother-in-law Clarence Polkingharn, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Leo and Dennis Showers, and one infant sibling.
Open visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Friday, September 3, 2021, at Roland Funeral Home.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 4th at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Atlantic. Burial will be in the SS Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery in Atlantic. Ruthe Brocker - April 01, 1926 - August 03, 2021

Departed: 08/03/2021 (Atlantic)
Obituary Preview: In Memoria –
Ruthe Marie (Clemmensen) Brocker passed away on August 3, 2021.
Ruthe was born April 1, 1926 to Anna and P.C. Clemmensen of Atlantic, Iowa. Along with her older brother, Paul, she spent her formative years on West 14th Street in a comfortable home adjacent to Sunnyside Park. Despite the challenges brought on by the Depression, Ruthe enjoyed a loving, supportive home and spiritual life. A lifelong member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, she was baptized, confirmed, and married at the original Eighth Street Building; her parents, children and grandchildren all enjoyed the services and fellowship of the new church on East 13th Street.
Thanks to a brilliant mind and academic discipline, Ruthe would receive a full tuition scholarship to attend Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. Remarkably, she began her studies in the chemistry department where she was the only woman. In 1946 young women were not always made welcome in the sciences, but she boldly pursued her studies, often at the consternation of her male colleagues.
It was this tenacity and extraordinary personal charm that would have first gotten the attention of a returning World War II veteran by the name of Eugene Brocker. We are told that they would have first met at a Pi Phi sorority mixer; a year later, on a hot afternoon in August of 1949, they were married in St Paul’s surrounded by their families and many friends.
That fall while Brock finished his business degree, Ruthe returned to Atlantic where she first took a teaching position in the nearby community of Lewis, and then later in the spring transferred to one in Harlan. Once reunited, the Brocker’s would take up residence in Anita where they soon purchased what was to become Town & Country Insurance.
Thanks to their hard work and enthusiasm for their new community, the insurance business began to grow. That fall Ruthe happily accepted a position with Anita Public Schools. Soon the family began to multiply with the birth of a daughter Kristen in 1952 and Kirk a year later. Sadly, Kristen would pass away in 1954. A second son, Kyle was born in March of 1956.
Now an active, full-time mother, Ruthe cared for her family’s needs while embracing her new community. Still active members of St. Paul’s in Atlantic, she also began volunteer work with the local Women’s VFW, the Anita Public Library, and as a leader and future officer of the local PEO chapter. Gardening, tutoring and managing the busy household at 309 Locust filled her days and provided some of her happiest memories.
While helping with the expanding family business, Ruthe gave birth to a daughter Kerry in 1960 and a son Kevin in 1966. By this time, Ruthe and Brock were discovering the joys of travel. Throughout the remainder of her life Ruthe loved her international adventures including trips to Greece, Russia, Denmark, England, Panama, the Caribbean, as well as most of the western and northern United States. A fair angler and anxious flyer, Ruthe always made for a great travelling companion.
With her usual energy and passion Ruthe would return to the classroom and a new building in 1977. Along with her teaching assignments in the English department, she was also a respected faculty sponsor of the school newspaper - the Spy – as well as a coach/judge for both forensic and journalist contests. For many years you would find Ruthe attending a Friday athletic event only to be out the door early on Saturday to take a car load of students to a contest somewhere in Iowa. Honored by the Iowa High School Speech Association, the National Forensic League, and the Newspaper Association of Iowa, Ruthe helped build on a level of excellence that Anita has always enjoyed.
With her children now grown, Ruthe maintained her already busy schedule by taking leadership positions with PEO, as well as two new passions – The Danish Immigrant Museum and The Browning Society. Driving the thirty miles to Elk Horn with her closest friend, Rhoda Kelloway, they would contribute to the museum as administrative assistants and docents. Thanks to her passion and knowledge of literature, Ruthe became a frequent contributor to the Browning literary society. One of her favorite subjects was the Nebraska born author, Willa Cather, a person to who Ruthe devoted much time and energy during her Master’s program. The old man smiled. 'I shall not die of a cold, my son. I shall die of having lived.” Willa Cather, Death Comes for the Archbishop
And then there was bridge; there was always time for bridge. A game she first learned in college would remain a lifetime passion. Highly skilled and fearless, Ruthe loved playing with her local club, as well those couples and personal friends who found their way to 2303 Hilltop, the Brocker’s family home from 1980 to 2018.
It was in the fall of 2019 that Ruthe and Brock moved to an assisted living facility in Waukee, Iowa. After his passing in July of 2020, Ruthe moved into a smaller more personal operation, the Gardens at Legacy Point where she remained until July 20, 2021. Ruthe’s health began to fail shortly after a fall that fractured her hip. She passed away under the kind care of the staff at the Kavanagh House in east Des Moines. Ruthe Marie Brocker was known as a gracious and intelligent woman, a good friend and a loving mother. As her literary mentor, Willa Cather once remarked, “The fact that I was a girl never damaged my ambitions to be a pope or an emperor.” Although Ruthe never showed much interest in either position, there is no question that she would have brought her considerable talents to these or any situation she chose. We love and cherish her memory. One of her favorite poets reminds us:
The world is not conclusion. A sequel stands beyond - Invisible as music - As positive as sound Emily Dickenson
Ruthe is survived by sons, Kirk (Pam) Brocker of Ankeny, Iowa, Kyle (Karen) Brocker of Napa, California, Kevin (Jill Rydl) Brocker of Polk City, Iowa, and daughter, Kerry (Collin) Hulse of Parkville, Missouri; grandchildren, Celia, Claire, and Halley Brocker and Brenda (Sean) Sullins; and great-grandchildren, Sophia and Landon.
She is preceded in death by her parents, P.C. and Anna Clemmensen and her brother, Paul.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 11, 2021, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic. The funeral service will be recorded and available at www.rolandfuneralservice.com by noon on Thursday. A private family burial will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Anita.
Visitation with the family will be held prior to the service at the church, beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
In light of the current situation the family would appreciate face coverings and social distancing be observed.
Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation to the Brocker Family Trust to provide a future scholarship.

Ida Eleanor was born on September 4, 1916, in Massena, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer P. and Sadie Ann (Wilson) Spieker. Ida was a twin to her brother, Ira, both weighing 10 pounds when they were born! She loved sharing memories of her childhood including helping her dad on the farm, harrowing with a team of horses, tea parties with siblings, and giving the horses a little push when they weren’t pulling the cart up the hill.
On March 18, 1939, she was united in marriage to LeRoy Mehlmann at the Methodist Church Parsonage in Atlantic. The couple made the Mehlmann Family farmhouse their home; getting electricity in 1941 and living there for the next 70 years. You never doubted when you visited that you would find a fresh cookie on the table or snack ready when you came in from chores. Her pies were delicious (the lady fingers too) and the grandkids also would have voted her macaroni and cheese and chocolate sauce #1!

Timothy Post - July 23, 1967 - July 23, 2021

Departed: 07/23/2021 (Atlantic)
Obituary Preview: Timothy Post, 53, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, formerly of Cumberland, died Friday, July 23, 2021, at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs.
Timothy Glenn was born on October 11, 1967, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Franklin Glenn and Beverly Joan (Nellis) Post. The family lived in northern Missouri and Peru and Cumberland, Iowa while he was growing up. As a kid he looked forward to riding his dirt bike and working alongside his dad fixing cars.
His sister, Tammie recalls some of her favorite memories with Tim while living on the farm being feeding the animals, having snowball fights, and digging tunnels as long as city blocks so they could get to the bus. And let’s not forget the infamous race to outrun a Blue Racer, a very fast and poisonous snake. She also reveals how appreciative Tim was that she spent countless hours tutoring him and helping him read. Tammie would without a doubt say he got his stubbornness from his dad. Friends, Ted and Angie Johnson, and their sons, Cody and Cole recall having many fond memories of Tim in the time they shared together. They looked forward to Halloween when he would stop over and carve Pumpkins with them, always having the patience to carve some of the most difficult designs. The roasted pumpkins seeds were always enjoyed as long as they would have enough to roast after throwing them at each other. The artistic talent won him 1st place in the Headless Horseman Pumpkin Carving Contest one year. He was always up for anything whether it be playing a game with Cody or helping Angie on some of her home decorating and remodeling ideas, he always agreed. They will be forever grateful for their friendship, what a blessing he was to have in their lives and will cherish all the memories, he was like Family!
Tim loved to make things out of wood and put together models of any kind and finishing them, painting even the tiniest of details with ease! There wasn’t anything that he couldn’t make or do when he put his mind to it!! The last couple of years Tim’s passion was buying, selling and repairing bicycles. He also enjoyed mowing lawns and gardening, sharing his crop with others. He enjoyed spending time with his friends and was always willing to help anyone in need; even if he didn’t have much himself or meant he went without. Tim will be deeply missed by all that knew him!
Tim is survived by his sister, Tammie Jo Post and her husband, Robert “Wild Wolf” Leavitt of Spokane, Washington and many extended family and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Franklin and Beverly Post.
Family and friends will host a Celebration of Life graveside service at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 14, 2021, at the Peru Cemetery in East Peru, Iowa.

Keith Esbeck - May 18, 1959 - July 15, 2021

Departed: 07/15/2021 (Atlantic)
Obituary Preview: Keith Esbeck, 62, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Thursday, July 15, 2021, at his home.
Keith Nolan was born on May 18, 1959, in Atlantic, Iowa, the son of Roger Owen and Marian Lee (Young) Esbeck. He grew up north of Marshalltown in Conrad, Iowa and attended BCL schools. He exceled on the football field; playing on varsity as a freshman and reminisced about winning the state championship his senior year. Keith graduated from BCL High School in the Class of 1977.
Following graduation, he moved to the Hancock area and worked at a factory in Council Bluffs for a short time before starting his career at Hy-Vee. On April 17, 1982, he was united in marriage to Donna Richter and the couple was blessed with three children, Brian, Blake and Brandi. The kids will warmly remember how he was always there for their various activities and treasure the time they spent together on many trips to the Carson Rodeo, Iowa Cubs games, and Friday nights at the Danish Inn. While working for Hy-Vee he was the Kitchen and Deli Manager; living various places for work until moving to Atlantic in 1999. He later was employed at Owner Revolution in Atlantic and mostly recently retired after over 15 years from working in the kitchen at the Glenwood Resource Center. His love of cooking also led to some side restaurant and bakery ventures opening The Kickstand in Panora in 1994 and Ezzy’s in Atlantic in the early 2000’s. Keith’s hot beef sandwich was a meal to talk about, one of the best around. He also made delicious donuts and pastries. Keith was a straight forward kind of guy and never hesitated to give you his two cents worth. He had a good heart and was always good about sending out cards. This past summer he was able to watch the grandkids t-ball games. He loved being outdoors and looked forward to searching out that perfect spot to trap and in the spring to hunt mushrooms. His favorite fishing holes included Schildberg’s north quarry and Lennon Mill, off of Lake Panorama. Keith seemed to have a green thumb when it came to gardening; nurturing an apple orchard and several gardens at one time for many years, including at his parent’s in Panora, grandparent’s in Exira and a few in Atlantic. While living in Des Moines Marilyn worked as the senior writer in the communications department at Dial Financial Corporation headquarters in Des Moines, writer in the public information department at Iowa Department of Social Services, and served as President of Fundware, a software package program for non-profits. Lois S. Coomes - July 16, 1927 - June 16, 2021

Departed: 06/16/2021 (Atlantic)
Obituary Preview: Lois Shirley Coomes, 93, of Atlantic, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at 7:40 p.m., at Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic.
Lois was born on July 16, 1927, in the family farmhouse north of Atlantic, the daughter of Louis Leonard and Bertha Wilhelmina (Goettsch) Helbourg. As a child she and her sister, Donnis often rode to school on their pony. Following graduating from Atlantic High School in 1945 she received Normal Training and taught in Pymosa and Washington Townships. When Lois would tell of her days in teaching, she was always recalled how wonderful she thought it was when the older students helped the younger ones. The years she taught were later helpful as a 4-H leader and in giving advice to her daughter, Jolene when she was homeschooling her own children.
On May 28, 1950, she was united in marriage to Maurice Dean Coomes at the Peace Evangelical and Reformed Church in Atlantic. They lived southeast of Wiota until moving to her family’s homeplace north of Atlantic in 1964. The night they moved in was memorable due to the storm that left a tree on their front porch.
Lois canned countless jars through the years of what she had harvested from her large garden. She enjoyed reading novels and collecting knick-knacks. All the traveling and camping they did as a family and later just as a couple created memories she treasured. Every summer the family would go camping for vacation; attending the Seattle World Fair one year. Favorite trips as a couple were to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and Alaska. Lois also explored outside the United States in Germany and England with extended family. Every year she looked forward to neighbors gathering with their families to celebrate New Years, 4th of July and the end of harvest. Lois was often referred to by others as a brick; stable in unstable situations and supportive. She was someone you could count on; she was giving and would do anything for her family and friends, even going alongside Dean in the Barbershop Chorus. Lois was a member of the Wiota United Methodist Church and was active as a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher.
Lois is survived by her daughter, Jolene Sue (Duane E.) Laugerman of Grimes; son, Jeffrey Dean Coomes of Atlantic; four grandchildren, Joanna Laugerman and Janelle Laugerman, both of Des Moines and Andrew Laugerman and Alex Laugerman, both of Grimes; sister, Donnis Helbourg of Atlantic; sisters-in-law, Donnis Phillips and Sharon (Harold) Waag; and cousins, LaVerne Goettsch, Russell (Kathy) Goettsch, Sharon (Dwight) Svuba, Betty (Alvin) Goettsch, Betty (Randall) Goettsch and Virginia (Gilbert) Goettsch.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Bertha Helbourg; husband, Dean Coomes; daughter, Janelle Coomes; and infant brother, Leroy Helbourg.
A graveside service will be held at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, June 19th at the Atlantic Cemetery. Following the service, visitation with the family present will be held at Roland Funeral Home until 11:00 a.m.
