Departed: 03/26/2024 (Beacon)
Obituary Preview: Joan Bernadette Winchell (nee LaColla), loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many, passed away on March 26, 2024, following a brief illness. She was 88. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 33 years, Roger Winchell, and her six siblings - Gerald LaColla, Louis LaColla, Claire LaColla Lee, James LaColla, Grace LaColla, and Gloria LaColla.
Born in Beacon, NY in 1935 to James and Matilda LaColla, she spent her youth in Beacon before attending college at SUNY Albany, earning a teaching degree in 1957. She briefly taught in the Schenectady, NY school district before going on to earn a master’s degree from SUNY New Paltz in 1976. During a summer break from college, she worked at the historic Mohonk Mountain House resort where she met Roger, marrying in 1958. Together, they had four sons between 1959-1969. She remained committed as a stay-at-home mom until her youngest finished Elementary School, at which time she resumed a rewarding career in teaching. As a longtime resident of Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, she taught mathematics and Spanish at Cornwall Central HS for nearly 20 years, leaving a profound and enduring positive impact on countless students who remained in contact with her for years after graduation.
Upon her retirement in 1995, Joan led a very active and fulfilling life. She traveled the globe, from the Alaskan wild, to the great cities of Florence, Paris, Rome, Edinburgh, Saint Petersburg and Seville, to name but a few. She strolled the beaches of Australia, climbed the pyramids at Chichén Itza, visited the Forbidden City and the Vatican, listened to howler monkeys race across the overhead canopy in a pitch-dark Costa Rican rain forest night, walked along the Great Wall, and explored waters from the Yangtze River to those of the Scandinavian Vikings. Her wit, generosity, compassion, and resiliency were dominant traits that consistently shined throughout her life. She was also passionate about her beliefs and convictions, never being one to shy away from ensuring her opinions and preferences were heard. To those closest to her, it was undeniable that she was one of the toughest, most courageous, and determined women to ever bless this Earth. She beat cancer…twice, survived open heart surgery, and endured grueling medical treatments and procedures over the span of four decades, all for the chance to experience the possibilities that life had to offer. She was a fighter throughout her life, bringing tenacity and perseverance to the battles she faced, continuously scrapping to beat whatever odds were stacked against her. Joan had no quit in her. She was steadfast in her desire to live the fullest life possible, displaying remarkable fortitude, strength, and resolve. She was a devout NY Giants and Eli Manning fan in the latter half of her life, always having faith he would pull off those big wins. Mildred C. Colonna - January 08, 1927 - March 24, 2024

Departed: 03/24/2024 (Beacon)
Obituary Preview: Mildred "Millie" Colonna, the sassy lady everyone knew and loved, passed away peacefully (on her terms) on March 24, 2024. She was 97 years old. The last of the 12 Mohicans. Millie was born on January 8, 1927 in Cold Spring, NY to the late James Nastasi and Carolina Barrone. She was one of 13 children. At the age of 17, she married the charming and handsome Peter J Colonna on June 4, 1944. They were married at Our Lady of Loretta Church in Cold Spring. During their 60 years of marriage, they were blessed with 2 children, Peter and Susan who both say, "she was the best mother in the world!"
Millie worked for IBM for over 20+ years before retiring.
Her greatest talent was cooking. You could find her in the kitchen everyday cooking and baking, but on Sunday afternoons, she loved making big Italian dinners for her family (but enough for an army). Instead of eating with us, she was in her glory, just watching everyone enjoy her food. Those Sunday dinner memories will live on in our hearts and bellies forever. Her meatballs, eggplant and pasta fazool will be greatly missed.
Though she found joy in trips to the casino, playing BINGO and cards, watching horror movies, shopping, dancing and cooking, her greatest joy and happiness was her family. When she spoke of them her face lit up with her beautiful smile. No matter what age she was, she got down on the floor to play with her 13 great-grandchildren (and great grand pups). They were her pride and joy.
There aren't enough newspapers in the world to describe this remarkable woman with a heart of gold. Millie definitely broke the mold and made a profound impact on others. She made everyone smile and laugh with her wonderful (sometimes naughty) sense of humor. She exuded unconditional love, kindness, generosity and compassion. Not just for her family and friends but for every human being and animal she encountered throughout her life. The word hate was not in her vocabulary. Millie is a perfect example of what God wants us all to be. It's been an honor and privilege to know this amazing woman and to be a part of her life. She will be painfully missed but never, ever forgotten.
Millie is survived by; a son, Peter Colonna of Poughkeepsie, a daughter, Susan Pellegrino and her husband John of Olive Hill, KY. Her grandchildren; April Stevens of Hopewell Junction, Raymond Renzo and his wife Theresa of Verbank, Tonya Colonna and her husband Robert Falcone of Poughkeepsie, Kimberly Shields and her husband Jeff of Wappingers Falls, Corinna Carrillo and her fiancé, Sean Detoro of Wappingers Falls, John Pellegrino of Olive Hill, KY, Jennifer Wood of Hopewell Junction, Melissa Johnson and her husband, Greg of Marlboro and Lisa Vumbico and her husband, Marc of Lagrange. Her great-grandchildren; Jeffrey Jr, Cody, Dylan, R.J., Thomas, Miguel, Carmella, Toriann, Raymond, Lucciano, Brian, Nicholas, Bliss, Jack, Nicholas, Marissa, Scott and Reina. Her great-grand dogs; Prancer, Puddin, Debo and Denali and predeceased by Dexter, Honeylove, Bailey and Chloe.
She was predeceased by her husband Peter J. Colonna in 2004, her daughter-in-law, Michele Colonna, her grandson, Scott Wood, her great grandson, Steven and her loving brothers and sisters, Anthony, Salvatore, Silvio, Alfred, Anita, Rose, Julia, Viola, Nena, Valentina, and Gloria.
Family and friends will gather on Monday, April 1 from 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Riverview Funeral Home by Halvey, 2 Beekman Street, Beacon. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 2 at 10 a.m. at St. Joachim Church, 51 Leonard Street, Beacon. Burial will follow at St. Joachim Cemetery, Beacon.

Patrice Guarneri Smith Hayes - Unknown - March 21, 2024

Departed: 03/21/2024 (Beacon)
Obituary Preview: Patrice was born to Joseph and Regina (Fay) Guarneri on April 30, 1954 in Beacon, NY. She and her brothers and sisters, Michael, Gina, Eddie, Kathy, Joey, and John, made the first of their large collection of lifetime friendships while living on East Willow Street.
Patrice graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes High School in 1972, attended SUNY at Delhi, moved to NYC, completed secretarial school in Manhattan, and continued to make more and more forever friends along the way as they went to countless concerts and music festivals together.
Patrice became a part of the Smith family when she married Jeffrey Smith in Wappingers Falls, NY on September 17, 1977. She was a proud and loving mother to Joel, GinaLynn, Jeffrey Jr, and Gregory and, although she had four children of her own, there is no way to know the number of kids that called her “Mom” as her doors, arms, and heart were always open to anyone that needed them.
In 1992, Patrice and the kids moved to Sarasota, FL (all packed into the car and loaded onto a train). There, her circle of friends and loved ones continued to grow as more people were drawn to her energy, spirit, laughter, and love.
Patrice would meet her missing piece, Woody Hayes, as they shared boat drinks and danced the conga lines as members of the local Parrot Head chapters. Patrice and Woody were inseparable from the time that they met and Patrice joined the Hayes clan when she and Woody were married in Sarasota on July 24, 1999. As Sara, Michelle, Alyssa, and Dean joined the family, Patrice became Gram-ma (or Gram-me Trice) to Emma Jean, Jon William, John Henry, Nicholas Paul, Charlotte Grace, and Bennett Joseph and she cherished her grandchildren with a love that knew no limit.
Patrice loved an adventure, traveled the world with a very loose plan (and never a map), took LOTS of pictures, never missed a birthday, wedding, anniversary, new birth, reunion, or gathering, and held every friend and family member deep in her heart every day of her life and was always sure to let them know how much they meant to her.
Patrice was predeceased by her mother and father, her husband, Woody, her sisters-in-law, Marie and Patty, and her dear friend, Kathy Fearon.
A viewing will take place at Toale Brothers Funeral Home in Sarasota on Tuesday, March 26, from 6:00-8:00pm.
A funeral mass will take place at St. Thomas More Church in Sarasota on Wednesday, March 27, at 10:30am.
There will be celebration of life gathering at Patrice’s home following the mass.
A burial service will take place at Sarasota National Cemetery on Tuesday, April 2, at 1:30pm.
We would like to say Thank You to all of the family, friends, doctors, nurses, and home health staff that helped take care of Mom. We appreciate you more than you know.
