Departed: 03/14/2024 (Sewickley)
Obituary Preview: Carol was born on February 12, 1932 to Lawrence Knibb Wiley and Dorthy June Green Wiley in Manhattan, New York. With her parents already successful in show business, Carol was featured on radio programs as a child actress, talented in both acting and music. The family spent time in both New York and Hollywood and eventually returned to their homestead outside of Richmond, Virginia, in Goochland County. Carol graduated from Goochland High School in 1949. After a quick trip to New York City where she discovered she was too short to qualify as a Rockette at Radio City Music Hall (she really did try out) she returned to Richmond, Virginia where she met Robert J. Monahan on a blind date. Bob (Robert), originally from Pittsburgh, PA was working on a job assignment in Richmond. When the job was over three months later, he told Carol “I’m moving back to Pittsburgh, you comin?”  Thus began her married life up north, eventually residing in Sewickley, PA.
Many in Sewickley may remember Carol from the 1970’s as a PTA member, a Girl Scout Leader and a co-founder of PYP (Parents, Youth and Police) a group effort to find a place where youth in Sewickley could hang out safely. She worked for many years at Sewickley Valley Hospital in the Family Services Department. Carol was a yoga instructor in the 70’s and honored that she was invited to host Swami Rama at her Bell Acres home in Sewickley. Carol returned to Goochland County, Virginia in 1992. She spent 25 years there enjoying her gardens, her lifelong friends and neighbors and lived peacefully in the log home her father built.  During this time, she was a prominent drummer and leader of Dances for Universal Peace in the Richmond and Charlottesville areas. Carol eventually moved back to Sewickley to spend her last years surrounded by family.
Carol was a trained dancer and talented musician with a beautiful singing voice. She loved music, nature, her gardens, the creek and her trees. She loved her family and many friends.

Virgil E. Waite, Jr. - June 26, 1957 - March 13, 2024

Departed: 03/13/2024 (Sewickley)
Obituary Preview: Virgil died on March 13, 2024, of natural causes. He was a son of the late Virgil E. Waite and Betty Lou (Masters) Waite of Sewickley, PA. Loving father of Cassandra (Waite) Maloney and Candice Waite. Cherished grandfather of Clara Maloney, Aidan Maloney, and Connor Maloney. Beloved brother of Kathy (Waite) Taylor.
Known to his friends and family as “Butch,” and to his grandchildren as “Pappy,” Virgil loved to camp, hunt, and fish in his younger years. He was a maintenance supervisor at Port Authority Transit, and lived in McKeesport, PA and then Murrysville, PA with his daughters and former wife Barbara. He enjoyed an early retirement, settling in Jeannette, PA.
Virgil’s language of love was service. Although a man of few words, he was a self-taught, master car mechanic, helping friends and family with their auto needs. Always resourceful, he enjoyed looking for the part he needed at the local junk yard. He had a community of close friends that supported each other - cutting grass, fixing cars, and giving rides.
He was also a lively storyteller, recreating in vivid detail the tales of his “hey day,” such as putting bullies in their place and protecting the underdog. He loved country music, his pets, and the thrill of finding a good deal while thrifting.
A lesson to all of us, Virgil enjoyed life’s simple pleasures - the great outdoors, a good television program, and carving out a few minutes of solitude to reflect at his local coffee shop.
Virgil is deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Frank Goff Jenne - March 16, 1939 - February 29, 2024

Departed: 02/29/2024 (Sewickley)
Obituary Preview: Beloved husband of Geraldine (Rapp) Jenne of 56 years. Loving father of Chip Jenne (Kathryn), cherished grandfather of Claire Elyse Jenne and Jamie Harrison Jenne. Frank died the evening of February 29, 2024. He was one of five sons and one daughter to the late William K. Jenne and Robina Kirk Quinby Jenne, and one half-brother from his mother’s earlier marriage.
Frank was a dedicated and proud electrical engineer, obtaining his Professional Engineer license in three states. He was also of solid engineering stock. His great grandfather was W.K. Jenne, holder of many patents and developer of the first commercial typewriter for the Remington Company of Ilion, New York. One of the features he patented was the first appearance of a “return” feature that would later come to be known as the Enter button on all our computers. On his mother’s side, Frank’s great grandfather was Arthur Kirk of Edinburgh, Scotland. Kirk immigrated to Pittsburgh and held patents in dynamite and dams and was called the “Prince of Dynamite” for his contribution to clearing debris after the Johnstown Flood, and the “Father of Good Roads” for his contribution to early automobile culture and safety. Kirk received an obituary in the first American automobile magazine. Arthur Kirk was also known for his civic duty. “On Decoration Days (Kirk’s) wagons were at the disposal of disabled veterans who were unable to march in the line to the cemeteries.” Kirk later purchased the Crescent Cement Company in Wampum, PA. Crescent supplied the cement used to build the Brooklyn Bridge, but after many years of company and family prosperity, tragedies and the Great Depression proved a turning point in family fortunes.
Frank was born in Pikeville, KY on March 16, 1939. After moving to Edgeworth, PA at the age of nine, Frank met his future wife Geraldine "Geri" while playing on a set of swings across the street from Edgeworth Elementary School. Their families also attended Shield’s Presbyterian Church where Frank and Geri would marry in 1967. Frank’s family moved to Maryland in 10th grade. Frank then graduated from Milford Mill High School in Reisterstown, MD where he wrestled varsity. Frank’s father died suddenly of a heart attack in Frank’s senior year of high school. He wanted to contribute to his mother and younger siblings’ care, so he stayed close to home and worked and attended Catonsville Community College, until he applied to join the Air Force to fly fighters, as his father did as a decorated pilot in World War I. Frank’s vision was better than 20/20, his mind was sharp and his reflexes quick, but he was found to have tone deafness that disqualified him from military flight eligibility. Frank decided instead to serve honorably in the Air National Guard in Maryland as an electronics technician, after which he worked on navigational systems for Boeing Corporation in Seattle, returning to Pittsburgh where he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1972. Frank began work in the private sector as an electrical engineer until 1984 when he joined the Army Corp of Engineers where he worked for 20 years, managing power design for the many locks and dams around Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, and West Virginia, while also serving where needed when war or natural disasters called regardless of risk to life and limb. He was in Kuwait twice, Bosnia and for flooding and hurricane relief he was in Florida, South Dakota, and Ohio. He was honored with the NATO medal for service in Bosnia and received several commendations from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for his contributions around the United States.
Frank’s life was dedicated to improving the material conditions of his family and the quality of his work. Once while testing equipment in the office for use at a job site, he discovered a voltage problem present in his office building. He tested the voltage in other government-owned buildings and wrote a report detailing potential savings of hundreds of millions of dollars annually for which he received a financial award, a commendation, and a meeting with the Secretary of Energy’s office in Washington, DC.
Frank was known for his quick wit and sense of humor. He loved his cat Spot for all of Spot’s 21 years. He loved hiking, joking, and laughing with his son Chip for which his son is eternally grateful.
Frank was an adventurer at heart. As a young man he built his own cabin in the Pacific Northwest, in Bellingham, WA, and then built his own kayak to navigate the San Juan Islands, until he married Geri and they moved into Seattle as newlyweds.
Upon returning to Pittsburgh and completing his education at Pitt, Frank and Geri bought a house in Edgeworth, PA on Woodland Road and had their son Chip. Due to Frank’s work the family moved frequently, including stints in the Texas Panhandle, Northern Quebec, and Colorado, where Frank worked on early oil shale projects for major mining concerns on the Western Slope of the Rockies. Frank took up running in the 1970s and ran the famous Bolder Boulder 10K race each year the family lived in Colorado. When the oil shale industry changed Frank moved his family back to Pittsburgh and from there made it his home base for the remainder of his career and retirement. His long and lauded career spanned 5 decades and took him around the world in pursuit of electrical design solutions in the public and private sector. Western Pennsylvania was home, but the world was his job site.
Frank was keenly aware of and proud of the history of his family in America. He also loved stamp and coin collecting, and as a true Scotsman he was a tinkerer, spending time each week in his workshop on inventions, creating prototypes as varied as coin displays and hand-powered bicycles that his son tested out over the years. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will continue to be deeply loved and missed. He was a man of great kindness of heart.

Obituary Preview: Warren Martin Clark was born December 10, 1931, in Porters Falls, WV and died on Sunday, December 24, 2023 in Sewickley, PA. He was the eldest son of Velda Taylor Clark and Thomas Alexander (Alec) Clark. He was raised on a farm in the hills of Wetzel County, WV where he learned love and respect of the land and all living things. He inherited a strong work ethic from his parents and grandparents and learned how to thrive when times were lean, how to make do with what one had and the importance of lending a willing helping hand to neighbors and others in need. He graduated from Tyler County High School and then served in the army as a Corporal during the Korean War. Afterwards he began studies in Engineering at the College of Steubenville on the GI bill while also starting a job at Weirton Steel. Through one of his army buddies, Guy Wagner, he met the love of his life, the beautiful Rose Mary Muti from Butler, PA and they married in 1955. He worked there for the next 40 plus years in a variety of areas, including the blast furnace and eventually as brakeman on the steel mill’s railroad. He built their home at 160 Orpha Avenue in Weirton with his own hands and tools, pretty much on his own, brick by brick. He  served as an outstanding role model of kindness and hard work and supported his family well, assuring that all of his three children were able to pursue higher education and all three chose to attend West Virginia University.
He was active in his local American Legion and supported his wife, Rose, in her many volunteer activities at St Joseph the Worker Parish, the Weirton Senior Center and Weirton General Hospital.
He was a skilled woodworker, loved playing cards with friends and family, was an avid reader, cross word puzzle solver and lifelong learner. He was highly intelligent and correctly guessed more final jeopardy answers than most contestants even at age 92.

Obituary Preview: Lois Fowler Striffler, age 93, of Bell Acres, was peacefully called home to her Lord and Savior, while surrounded by family, on Wednesday, December 20, 2023. Born to the late Stanley Hess and Emily (Theys) Hess on December 29, 1929, Lois led a full, rich life always holding family first. Lois was preceded in death by husband William H. Fowler and her second husband Jack Striffler.
Those who knew Lois are fully aware of her spiritual faith and zest for volunteering. Lois was a 73-year member of the Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, as well as a founding and charter member of the Big Sewickley Creek VFD Ladies Auxiliary. At her church, there was not a vacation bible school, a dinner, a cherry pie sale, an apple butter sale, a cookie sale, or raffle without Lois volunteering and contributing. Her commitment to the community and particularly the Big Sewickley Creek VFD Ladies Auxiliary was unparallelled. Lois, not long ago, proudly told the younger auxiliary members about going house to house selling bricks to build the original fire house. It would be impossible to count the number of fish fries, roast beef dinners, catering events, craft shows, bake sales and other fundraising efforts that Lois participated in.
Lois also loved sports. As a teenager she was a state gymnastics medal winner before graduating from Ambridge High School in 1948. For seven decades, Lois attended Little League, Quaker Valley High School, and Miracle League Baseball games and she was an avid Pirates fan.
Lois is survived by her five children: Cindy Fowler (Boyd Addlesperger) of Mansfield, OH, Kerry Fowler (Deborah) of Leet Township, Gayle Mayes of Bell Acres, Clyde Fowler of Leetsdale, and BJ Fortuna (Wayne) of Bell Acres; eight grandchildren: Llalan Fowler, Washington, DC, Clyde Fowler, Jr., Ambridge, Nathan Robinson, Tionesta, Joshua Fortuna (Nikki Polites), Cranberry Township, Chelsey Fascetti (John), Allison Park, Brianna Massot (Valentin) Angers, France, Emma Osselborn (Keith), Wexford, and Miracle League All-Star, Jayne Mayes, Bell Acres; and five great-grandchildren: Gia Robinson, Avery Fortuna, Ella Fortuna, Aleigha Polites, and Alivia Polites.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 11 a.m. in Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 670 Pleasant Hill Rd., Wexford, PA  15090. A luncheon reception and brief ceremony will follow immediately at the Big Sewickley Creek VFD, 1850 Big Sewickley Creek Rd., Sewickley, PA 15143. Memorial Donations can be made to Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 670 Pleasant Hill Rd., Wexford, PA, 15090, The Miracle League of Southwestern PA, PO Box 1519, Cranberry Township, PA 16066, or Big Sewickley Creek VFD, 1850 Big Sewickley Creek Rd., Sewickley, PA  15143. Arrangements are entrusted to RICHARD D. James D. Persuit - May 23, 1956 - November 01, 2023

Departed: 11/01/2023 (Sewickley)
Obituary Preview: Jimmy passed away suddenly on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, in his home. He was born May 23, 1956, and raised in Sewickley. He attended St. James Grade School and graduated High School from Quaker Valley in 1974. At Quaker Valley, Jimmy played football, hockey, and baseball. He went on to earn a B.S. degree in Parks and Resource Management from Slippery Rock University. Jimmy loved sports, but more than his love for sports, was his passion for anything outdoors. His love of the outdoors led him to take a job as a forestry ranger in the state of Oregon. After returning to Sewickley, he was hired as a flight attendant for Piedmont Airlines (US Air). He loved the fact he could travel half of the month and have the other half of the month hunting, fishing, and boating. He was a true self-made man and was an autodidact learner. No matter the challenge, whether it was tearing apart a 1980 Volvo 244 transmission and putting it back together, or wiring a home and electric panel, Jimmy would study it and get it done. Never afraid of heights, he took a job painting tall power cable towers when he was out west in Oregon and later bridges, including the Sewickley Bridge when it was rebuilt in 1981. When he wasn't flying, hunting, or fishing, Jimmy would purchase and renovate five homes, some from the ground up, and do much of the work himself. Jimmy’s love of sports and hunting came from time spent with his grandfather and namesake, James "DaddyT" Persuit. They spent many weekends rabbit hunting and Daddy T was his little league (Phillies) coach. Jimmy would fish and hunt all seasons such as turkey, bear, buck, and doe. His favorite spot to hunt and spend his time was in Tionesta, PA. From the age of 16, he spent years hunting and fishing staying at the "Meanor Camp", until he decided to build a place of his own in 1994. He built a 10 bedroom, 3-bathroom lodge on two acres, that he wanted his brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews to enjoy the outdoors for years to come.  He was also very generous and stressed the need to give back. As a young man in his twenties, he followed in his grandfather's and father's footsteps, and coached Ohio Valley T-ball and Bronco league teams, to help young kids learn the game of baseball. With his time at US Air, he started a company sponsored Special Olympics program in the Charlotte, NC area, and then here in Western PA, when he was transferred back to Pittsburgh. He volunteered to deliver meals on wheels each week in between renovation projects. Jimmy's smile lit up the room. He loved all animals, especially dogs. He organized family picnics, all sports weekends, Easter egg hunts, and trout fishing weekends. When he was 10-12 years old, he gathered a large group of his friends, and they would camp out in tents at the Walker Park shelters along the Little Sewickley Creek overnight, before the first day of trout season. Everyone was welcome. It became a tradition for many years for extended family and friends. He started a tradition of inviting friends to the Persuit home for Christmas Eve, which was followed by all his five siblings and that tradition is still alive today. Jimmy was always about making good lifelong memories and we have many! Peace be with you Jimmy Dale.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his father, Gerald Persuit, and his best friend, Tina Bettor. He is survived by his mother, Rose Cicero; siblings Mary Persuit of Sewickley, Danny (Jenine) Persuit of Roanoke, TX, Robert (Jeanne) Persuit of Wilmington, NC, Lucy (John) Malarik of Bell Acres, PA, and Frank (Sheri) Persuit of Glen Osborne, PA. He also leaves behind eight nieces and nephews that he loved dearly, Jackie, Derek, Kelsey, Janelle, Sidney, Morgan, Jake, and Avery.
