Obituary Preview: William L. Knowles, age 88, of Battle Creek, passed away Monday, August 31, 2020 at the Glenn Arbor Hospice Residence. He was born February 28, 1932 in Genoa, Ohio the son of Clarence Mack and Flossie Anna (Dunn) Knowles. Bill was an electrician at Clark Equipment Company for 32 years, retiring in 1981. He served in the Michigan Army National Guard for 12 years, loved camping and travelling and was a gifted handyman who could fix anything. On May 5, 1956 he was married to Beverley A. (Walsh) who survives. Also surviving are their four children: Vickie Barlond, Lynda (Joe) Knowles-Panczyk, David Knowles and Joy Dore all of Battle Creek; five grandchildren: William (Lacey) Knowles, Gina (Eddie) Kline, Annie Archie, Ryan (Samantha) Wolf and Stevi (Trevor) Hegner and thirteen great-grandchildren; a sister: Annette Alderson of Bellevue and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters: Mary Jo Bowen and Claris Charameda. Obituary Preview: Byron J. “Mac” McDonald, 87 of Battle Creek, Michigan passed away on Saturday August 22, 2020. He was born July 27, 1933 in Passaic, New Jersey to John B. “Mac” and Joan (Litwan) McDonald. He is survived by his children: Michael J. McDonald, Kelly A. McDonald and Stephen P. McDonald all of Battle Creek and was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Nancy A. McDonald and his parents. Mac graduated from Lakeview High School in 1951 then attended both Notre Dame, St. Bonaventure, and Western Michigan University. He was the quarterback and defensive end on the1950 Lakeview High School football team that went 9-0. From 1953 to 1955 he served in the U.S. Army. Upon his honorable discharge he worked at the Kellogg Company for 19 years and was active in the union. Mac was very involved in politics. From 1974 until 1989 he worked for the State of Michigan as an Administrative Assistant, Senate Appropriations Committee Administrator and Special Assistant Senate Leader. He also served on the Calhoun County Labor Council, Calhoun County Mental Health Board for 12 years, Substance Abuse Council, Calhoun County Health Board for 14 years and the Calhoun County Commission. Mac loved to travel with family. He loved the Jersey Shore and his family’s Long Beach Island, New Jersey home where he bodysurfed in the ocean. He enjoyed going to the beach every spring break at Cocoa Beach, Florida and every summer visiting South Haven. He enjoyed many concerts at W.M.U. and locally of the Gold Company, Jazz concerts and Post Band Concerts with his wife and son Mike. Mac loved sports. He watched his son Steve both play and coach. He was a 60 year plus Notre Dame Football season ticket holder and a lifelong Notre Dame football fan. He also refereed Saturday St. Philip football games with Jim Hayes as well as sponsoring and coaching a baseball team. Mac’s other love was spending holidays with family and his food. Handmade perogies, New Jersey hoagies, chilidogs, White Castle sliders, peanut butter and sweets were his favorites. Obituary Preview: Richard Earl Burton Sr. passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 16, 2020.  He was born on June 1, 1940 in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of Earl and Birdine (Surine) Burton.  He attended Lakeview High School until 1959. He worked many jobs as a young man, including Fire Apparatus and Model A & T.  He loved racing his stock car around the track in Galesburg where he managed to win a time or two.  When he wasn’t racing, he enjoyed watching the cars buzz around the track and rooting on his favorite NASCAR driver.  He enjoyed spending time in the garage building things out of wood.  He loved fishing and being on the water.  He was a big jokester, and rarely did you leave his house without a good laugh.  He enjoyed family gatherings and listening to music with family and friends at Niko’s.  He was a loving husband, dad, and grandpa and was especially proud of all his grandkids.  He is survived by his loving wife Nancy Burton, his son Richard Burton Jr., his daughter Debbie (Tom) Reynolds, stepchildren Terry (Scott) Denny, Tannis Hansen, and Larry Bell Jr., his sisters Carolyn (Frank) Gammon, Paulette Leonard, and Linda Ayers along with 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Danny Burton, and two sisters Beverly Hurst and Donna Burton.  In accordance to his wishes, cremation has taken place.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2020 at the Richard A. On August16, 1997, he was united in marriage to the former Cathy Jo Hewitt who preceded him in death in 2013. Surviving is his mother, Anna Hanke; a sister, Linda Hanke; step-children, Erin (Merik) Warren and Carrie Johnson; 3 grandchildren and mother-in-law, Joann Hewitt. Obituary Preview: Conrad C. Warren, age 78 of Battle Creek, died Monday August 10, 2020. He was born May 1, 1942 in Battle Creek, Michigan the son of Delson Carl and Violet M. (Cross) Warren. Conrad worked for the City of Battle Creek for 29 ½ years as an equipment operator, retiring in 2000.  On September 4, 1971 he was married to Irene M. (Millard) who survives. Also surviving is his son: Todd Warren; four stepsons: Quinton Malone, Leon Malone, Keith Malone and Russell Malone; two grandsons; two great-grandsons; two sisters: Janet and Sharon Warren; two brothers: Jack and Gary Warren; many nieces and nephews. John was born James Washy on Oct. 15th 1936, in Woodbury, N.J., and was the eldest son of James and Helen Bech Washy. He took the name of St. John Marie Vianney when he graduated from Immaculate Conception Province OFM in Wappinger Falls N.Y. John is survived by Luise Kaufmann and their two daughters, Imre Vincent and Kishkamia Kaufmannvianney; granddaughters, Aubreyn, Karley and Ella; son-in-law Jason Vincent; sister-in-law Lauretta Washy; nieces and nephews and Roberta Sinclair and family. He was preceded in death by his son Tovah Kaufmannvianney; siblings Sister Bernadette Washy, Andrew Washy and Sister Rose Washy.
John’s life was led by his love of the Lord and his desire to be a light to those in need. In addition to his missionary work John worked at Grand Trunk Railroad in Battle Creek, Mich. He gave selflessly and was always using any extra time or resources to spread God's message of Peace. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday Aug. 20, 2020, at St. Jerome Church, 229 Collier Ave, Battle Creek, Mi 49037. The family will receive visitors at 10 a.m. to share memories and stories of this man that meant so much to so many. Denny graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1964 and worked at Post Cereals for 36 years retiring in 2000. He enjoyed all sports but especially shooting pool, bowling, and playing softball. He was a fan of the New York Yankees and loved music and dancing. On September 1, 1977 he was married to Rebecca “Becky” (Jones), who survives. Also surviving are his children: Denee Dyer and Brent Dyer; six grandchildren which his world revolved around: Jimmy Jackson, Kadim and Kalin Worthington, Hunter, Haley and Becky Dyer; his beloved great-grandson: Mason Williams; brother Max Dyer; two sisters: Rebecca (Mike) Doren and Pamela Ward; many nieces and nephews, and his dog Tinkerbell. Denny was preceded in death by his grandmother Bertha Martin “Little Ma”, his father Garland Dyer; his mother Ruth Burke and three brothers: Michael, Ronald, and David Dyer. Wennive lived in Craigsville, WV, and worked at a clothespin factory in Richwood, WV. She then moved to Battle Creek and worked at the Kellogg Company until her retirement. She attended Friends Church, was a great cook, loved find a word puzzles and reading books. She loved God, her family and thoroughly enjoyed her grandsons. Surviving is a brother, Randall Cox; grandsons, Brian and Chad Bevins; great grandchildren, Dustin, Zachary and Madison Bevins; 2 nephews she and her mother raised, Lonnie and David Cox; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Delmas Bevins; brothers, Lou, Denny, Bob, Bill and John; sisters, Thelma and Ettive. Private services were held with interment at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. She continued her education at Cooley Law School and received a Doctorate in Law.
Cathy loved cooking and entertaining, spending time with friends and family, and watching game shows. She volunteered any chance she could, whether it was car-pooling kids to soccer practice, pushing the garbage can around the school cafeteria at lunch or organizing boxes at her local food pantry.
She is survived by her children, Rob, Rachel and Ryan Hoffman; her brothers, Chris (Julie) and Ron(Maria) Robbins; her “adopted parents” Elaine and Skip Robbins; her step-mother, Diana Robbins and her best friend and sister, Julie Brandt-Staky and an extended amount of family and friends.
Her father, Harold Robbins and grandparents, Bob and Marion Robbins preceded her in death. Obituary Preview: Annette Renee Holland passed away at her home on August 3rd, 2020. Annette was born January 4th, 1960 in Chicago, IL. Annette enjoyed watching all kinds of movies, although karate movies were Annette’s favorite. Annette enjoyed playing games on her computer, crocheting, along with spending time with her kids and grandkids. Annette also enjoyed playing with her pets and talking to her best friend Verntitler. Annette obtained a CNA certification in 1987 and worked in several nursing facilities over several years in the Battle Creek, MI area where she moved to in 1985 with her six kids. Annette was happy to be doing what she loved which was nursing. Annette known to her friends and family for her willingness to help others, great sense of humor, her “tell it like it is” voice/attitude, and her love for family. Annette loved “Betty Boop” and collected it often along with dolls. Annette’s favorite tv shows were Let’s Make a Deal, The Price is Right, Property Brothers and Love it or List it, which she watched daily with her common law husband of 25 years plus Larry Titler. Annette was preceded in death by her mother, Mildred Jean Holland Banks. Annette was survived by her six kids; Pierre Holland, Latasha Holland, Joseph Holland, Josie Holland, Russell Holland, and Jennifer Holland.  Twenty plus grand children and nine great grandchildren.  Two brothers and two sisters; Benard Holland, Lationa Holland, Marlon Holland and Kimberley Holland Johnson,  several nieces, and nephews. Annette known for the super wonderful person, women, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, and auntie that anyone could have ever had. She is loved and will be clearly missed. Sandra was preceded in death by her father in 1997 and her mother in 2015. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 31, 2020 at Calvary Baptist Church with The Rev. Thomas C. Jay graduated from Lakeview high school in 1993, Jay received an associate degree in HVAC from Eastern Arizona College.  Jay held many different jobs but his entrepreneurial spirit always lead the way.  Jay loved woodworking, bowling, helping the less fortunate homeless and veterans and his doggie Coco. Jay loved model railroading and at one time was president of the Battle Creek model railroaders club.
Jay is survived by his parents Ken and Sherry Beninghaus, Jim and Nancy Sheldon. Siblings Tiffiany (Eric) Amaro, Tonya (Tim) Beninghaus-Slack, Ken Beninghaus Jr. Jimmy (Jennifer) Sheldon Jr. All from Battle Creek. Simone (Jason) Buller of Burlington. Mark was born on December 07, 1952 to the late William Norwood and Betty Lucille Updegrove. Mark moved to Battle Creek, Michigan from Baltimore, Maryland when he was a young child. After attending Battle Creek Central High School, he joined the Air Force where he was medically discharged. He then moved to Dayton, Tennessee where he spent a few years before moving back to Battle Creek. After working as a Quality Control Manager at United Steel and Wire Company for eight years, Mark worked as a security officer at Kellogg’s where he retired from in 2014.  For the last sixteen years, Mark and Carol have been devoted to The Potter’s House Church where he played bass. He enjoyed music, singing, playing guitar and bass, softball, and fishing.  Through the whole process over these four months and for the last thirty five years Mark’s wife, Carol  Ann Updegrove has stood by his side. His survivors also include his four daughters, Rose Updegrove King (Todd) of Coldwater, Michigan, Ami Marie Patterson (Don) of Dayton, Tennessee, Missie Faye Lytle (Steve Hale) of Dayton, Tennessee, and Dorothy Ramsey-Owen (Christopher) of Battle Creek, Michigan. Mark and Carol have ten grandchildren: Sami Butler, April King, Jaison King, Izaac Smith, Chirsten Jenkins, Lyla Payne, Jade Smith, Emily O’Brien, Gavin O’ Brien, and Gabi Messer and also two great grandsons: Braxton and Chad Butler. Mark is also survived by his Uncle and Aunt Roland and Ginny Wolf of Baltimore, Maryland as well as the abundance of nieces and nephews.  Mark is also proceeded in death by his younger brother Anton “Tony” Lucht Updegrove. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 18, 2020 at The Potter’s House Church, 226 Capital Avenue North East, Battle Creek, Michigan.  The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.  Interment will take place following the service at Morgan Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to The Potter’s House Church.  Condolences may be left for the family at www.henryfuneralhome.org

Obituary Preview: Herman passed peacefully in his home, Sunday, July 12, 2020.  He was born on February 17, 1930, in Battle Creek, the son of Herman and Rose (Severance) Blankenburg. He had been a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1948. Herman was a veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1951 then the Air National Guard before being honorably discharged in 1952. He attended the Allied School of Mechanical Trades Technical Institute in Chicago, earning his Master Machinist Certificate. Herman was employed as a machinist with the Kellogg Company for 40 year, retiring in Oct. 1990. He married the love of his life, Sharon E. Kline on August 31, 1963. She preceded him in death in 2005.  He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Kellogg 25 Year Club, Elks Lodge #131 and the American Legion Post #298. He was an avid sportsman. He played football in the Air Force. He bowled, golfed, played city league baseball, basketball and softball. Surviving are his children, Susan (Chris) Goins of Battle Creek and Michael (Nina) Blankenburg of Piqua, OH; grandchildren, Sarah and Daniel Goins; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a twin brother, Edward Blankenburg, sisters, Catherine Blankenburg, Mary Huver, Della Blankenburg and Ellen  Ainsworth . Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:00 p.m., Monday at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home and Cremation Services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00, Tuesday, July 21, 2020, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will be at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
