Judy Layman - September 14, 1949 - April 29, 2024

Departed: 04/29/2024 (Dandridge)
Obituary Preview: Judy Marie Phillips Layman went to join our Lord in Heaven on April 29, 2024, after a long, courageous battle with cancer. We believe she is dancing and rejoicing in Heaven with Jesus. Judy was born in the rural Cedar Bluff community in Sevier County, Tennessee, on September 14, 1949, to Verner Elmer and Ruby Fox Phillips. Judy was a hard worker her entire life. When she was a young child, she helped her brothers, Don and Larry, on the family farm, working endlessly in the hay and tobacco fields. When she was 15, her mother went to work at Cas Walker’s, and Judy was tasked with cooking, cleaning, and caring for her younger siblings. Her younger brother Bruce and younger sister Grace called her “mama”. After graduating in the top ten percent from Sevier County High School in 1967, she attended East Tennessee State University. Her dream was to be a teacher. After three years in college, Judy married Tony Layman. She did not graduate from college; however, her dream of teaching finally came to fruition when she was called to be a substitute teacher. Judy was dedicated to helping the children achieve educated and productive lives, as well as providing them with care and compassion. Mom was known for her radiant smile and hilarious, one-of-a-kind sense of humor. Making people laugh and smile were her favorite things to do. She was well known for her outrageous April Fool’s jokes. Judy loved gardening and always had one of the most beautiful gardens in the neighborhood. She frequently shared her produce with her neighbors, friends, and family. Judy was completely dedicated to Jesus and her family. She loved her grandchildren with all of her heart. She was the best Granny, Nanny, and Mammaw ever. She was preceded in death by parents, Ruby Lorraine Fox and Verner Phillips, grandparents, Julia Allen and Roscoe Fox, and Margaret Sutton and Jonah Phillips, mother-in-law and father-in-law, Blanche Byrd and Woodrow Layman; sister-in-law, Joann Chambers; brothers-in-law, Philemon Layman, Lowell (Delores) Layman, and Buford Layman. Judy is survived by her husband of 54 years, Everett “Tony” Layman, daughter Wendy (Mike), son Brennan (Jacinda); grandchildren Selena (Jason), Athena (Michael), Brody, Elijah, Wyatt, Quentin, and Journie; great-grandchildren Asher and Iris. She is also survived by her siblings, Amy (David), Don (Kay), Larry (Laura), Thelma (Richard), Grace, Bruce (Ramona); sisters-in-law, Sharon (Fred) Simms, Linda Layman, and Lynne Wallace; special nieces, Karen and Lori, special nephew, Daniel, and many other nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and cousins. We also want to thank Covenant Hospice for the care they provided our Mom. We especially thank nurse, Heather, for the kind and compassionate care, as she went above and beyond for Mom. The family will receive friends at Resthaven Memorial Gardens Chapel Mausoleum in Dandridge, TN, on Thursday, May 2nd, 2-4pm, with the funeral service at 4pm. The graveside service will be immediately following. The service will be officiated by Pastor Zane Stuart, with special message by Rev. Fred Heard. Pall bearers are Daniel Herron, Richard Herron, Billy McKee, Brody Floyd, Shannon Simms, and David Phillips. Honorary pall bearers are Jason Botts, Derrick Voyles, Barry Simms, Chad Phillips, Paul Herron, Jason Moses, and Michael Schaefer. Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary often falls to a family member, close friend, or funeral home staff. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the notice.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), surviving family members, and funeral or memorial service details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary greatly, but most are between 100-500 words. The goal is to provide a concise yet meaningful tribute to the deceased.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to upload photos of the deceased. These can be recent or from throughout their lifetime.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed and personalized tribute to the deceased.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and any specific requirements they may have. Some newspapers may accept online submissions, while others may require email or phone submissions.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, it is becoming increasingly common for people to write their own obituaries in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words.

What if I don't want to include certain family members in the obituary?

This can be a sensitive issue. It's essential to consider the feelings of all family members involved and make decisions that respect everyone's wishes. If necessary, consult with a funeral home or obituary writer for guidance.

Can I include humorous or lighthearted elements in an obituary?

Absolutely! Obituaries don't have to be somber and serious. Including anecdotes or personality traits that showcase the deceased's humor or spirit can make the notice more engaging and celebratory.

How do I handle errors or inaccuracies in an obituary?

If you discover an error in an already published obituary, contact the newspaper or online platform immediately to request corrections. Be prepared to provide documentation supporting the changes.

Can I republish an obituary at a later date?

In some cases, yes. If you want to reprint an obituary on a special occasion, such as the anniversary of the deceased's passing, you may need to obtain permission from the original publisher or pay a republication fee.

What is the average cost of publishing an obituary?

The cost varies widely depending on the publication, location, and length of the obituary. Expect to pay anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars for print publication, while online platforms may offer free or low-cost options.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers, genealogy websites, or libraries that maintain historical records. Local funeral homes or genealogical societies may also have access to archived obituaries.

Can I use social media to share an obituary?

Absolutely! Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter can be effective ways to share news of a loved one's passing with a wider audience. Many funeral homes and online obituary platforms also offer social sharing features.

What is the purpose of an online guestbook?

An online guestbook allows friends and family to leave condolences, share memories, and sign their name in remembrance of the deceased. This provides a digital space for mourners to express their sympathy and support.

How long are online obituaries typically available?

The duration varies depending on the platform or website hosting the obituary. Some may keep notices online indefinitely, while others may remove them after a certain period (e.g., 30 days).

Can I create a memorial website or page for my loved one?

Yes! Many online platforms offer tools to create custom memorial websites or pages where you can share stories, photos, and memories of the deceased.

What is the role of an obituary in the grieving process?

An obituary serves as a tangible representation of a person's life and legacy, providing comfort and closure for those who are grieving. It also offers an opportunity for friends and family to come together in support of one another.

How do I cope with reading an emotional or difficult obituary?

Taking time to process your emotions is essential. Allow yourself to feel whatever emotions arise, and consider reaching out to supportive friends or family members for comfort.

Can I use an obituary as inspiration for other types of writing or creative projects?

Absolutely! Obituaries can serve as powerful prompts for writing exercises, storytelling projects, or even art pieces that celebrate the life and legacy of the deceased.

What resources are available for those struggling with grief after reading an obituary?

Hospice organizations, counseling services, and support groups can provide valuable resources and guidance for individuals coping with loss. Online forums and communities dedicated to grief support can also offer connection and comfort.
