Daniel David Stern - July 28, 1943 - July 11, 2022

Departed: 07/11/2022 (Boise)
Obituary Preview: Daniel David Stern was born on July 28, 1943, in Locarno, Switzerland and died in Boise, Idaho, on July 11, 2022. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Paula Knoblock Stern, his daughters, Becky (Steve) and Frances (Orie “Dit”). He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother in law, Glenn Knoblock. The way Dan led his life was encompassed in his marriage to Paula in August of 1985. They were true partners in all things. They shared a deep love of music, travel, and family. Dan and Paula traveled the world together. They enjoyed opera in some of the world’s foremost opera houses. They were “partners in crime” in spoiling the three grandchildren. The entire family is deeply grateful for the loving and constant care she has given him over the past years, exceeding what anyone else would have been able to do. Their marriage is a testament to the love and sacrifice necessary for such a loving successful union. Dan was born in Switzerland in the middle of World War II to Jewish parents, Frans Martin Stern and Dorette Tchenio. The small family survived the war and when Dan was six years old was able to immigrate to the United States, settling in Rochester, New York. Dan entered the Rochester public school system knowing only the Italian and French languages. He had to assimilate quickly, learn the language and socialize. Not surprisingly, he was successful at both, and socializing became a lifelong love. He also was active in his local synagogue, going to religious school several days a week. Dan loved playing baseball and other sports, but he particularly loved playing the violin. Dan went to Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester, where he received his degree in music education. He then moved out west to begin a teaching position in Salem, Oregon. While in Oregon, he joined the National Guard. In Salem, he first met the mother of his children, Julia Rice. He began his doctoral studies at the University of Oregon, where Julia and he were married in 1968. That is also where they had their two daughters, Rebecca and Frances. Much to his great delight, Rebecca attended Eastman and Frances attended the University of Oregon. After receiving his doctorate, the family moved to Las Vegas, New Mexico, for a job at Highland University. Their move to Boise came in 1974, when he accepted a position as Music Director and conductor with the Boise Philharmonic, one he held with great success until 1987. During this time, Dan also conducted many performances with Opera Idaho and Ballet Idaho, as well as teaching at College of Idaho and Boise State University. He guest conducted in Costa Rica, throughout the Northwest as well as at his alma mater, Eastman. He also had the honor of conducting the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. After leaving the Boise Philharmonic, Dan ventured into the financial industry, holding positions with New York Life, Charles Schwab, and as a private banker at Wells Fargo. In 2005, he was asked to take over as Music Director for the Boise Baroque Chamber Orchestra, which had been established in 2003. He loved his return to music, his true avocation, until he retired at the end of the 2018-2019 season. In 2014, he was awarded the Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts. Dan was active throughout his life in a variety of civic and religious organizations. He was a member of the Boise Downtown Rotary Club, serving in multiple capacities, including president. He also was active in the local Jewish community, having an integral role in the merger of Congregation Beth Israel and Congregation Ahavath Israel, and being a lay leader for services prior to the hiring of full time rabbi, Dan Fink. One of his greatest accomplishments was the kind of father and co-parent he was. Becky and Frances always knew that both their parents loved and supported them. Dan and Julia ensured that they were both active in all areas of the girls’ lives growing up. Dan was thrilled when Becky followed in the “family footsteps” and became a successful musician. He was equally thrilled when Frances went to law school, and became a lawyer in Boise. Frances was also nice enough to give him three grandchildren. In 2021 Becky and her husband moved back to the Boise area, so he had everyone where he thought they should be. If asked, Dan would likely state that his greatest pleasure was being a grandfather to his three grandchildren, Ben, Gina, and Angie Dudley. He was thrilled to be near them as they grew up. He rarely missed a sporting event, going to countless baseball, softball, basketball, tennis, and fencing matches. He was the tutor for each of the children’s bar/bat mitzvah, allowing them to have a special bond with him. Dan was a true believer in civil rights and human rights. He had no tolerance for racism of any kind or anti-semitism. As a lifelong Democrat, he had an abiding belief in voter’s rights and social justice. He also felt strongly that each child should be given access to music education. Thus, in lieu of flowers, the family asks that a donation be made in his name to one of the following organizations: Congregation Ahavath Beth Israel, the ACLU, the Anti-Defamation League, the Idaho Commission on the Arts, or any organization that is supportive of democratic ideals, voting rights, and preserving democracy.

Margie Louise Allton - October 25, 1938 - June 26, 2022

Departed: 06/26/2022 (Boise)
Obituary Preview: Margie Louise Farrow was born in Cedar City, Utah on October 25, 1938, to Raymond Lee Farrow and Jean Walker. Margie was the second child born to the family which included her older brother Gayland, her younger sister Francis, and her younger brothers Richard and Dennis. At the time of her birth Margie’s family lived in Delamar, Nevada. When she was three years old the family moved to Summit, Utah, where she lived until she graduated from high school. Following high school Margie attended LDS Business College in Salt Lake City and the College of Southern Utah in Cedar City. Margie met her husband – Merle Marcus (Marc) Allton, Jr. while working as a secretary in Las Vegas Nevada. The couple was married in Summit, Utah on April 1, 1961 and spent their early married years living in California and Nevada before settling down back in Summit to raise their three children: Eva Marie Allton, Raymond Marc Allton, and Lee Gary Allton. Margie stayed at home until her children were all in school, then resumed her secretarial career working at the Cedar City Office of the Utah Highway Patrol. In 1992, Marc and Margie both retired from their careers and moved to Meridian, Idaho. While living in Meridian Margie evolved from being a mother to being a grandmother as her children married and began having families of their own. At this time Margie began her hobby in earnest of making quilts and blankets. She made hundreds of blankets and became an active participant in Project Linus, a non-profit organization which provides blankets to needy children in the Boise area. Margie continued to be a devoted mother throughout the years, giving support to her children and grandchildren through their trials and life challenges, including the tragic loss of her daughter Eva in January 2014. Margie was always a fighter, which helped her as her health begin to deteriorate. She lived with a pacemaker for years, but that didn’t keep her from visiting her family and doing all the things she enjoyed. Margie would often express her gratitude and love to Lee for his care for her in her declining years. Margie passed away peacefully at her home in Meridian, Idaho on June 26, 2022. Margie is survived by her husband Marc; children Raymond (Cynthia) Allton, and Lee Allton; siblings Carolyn Farrow, Francis (Charles) Corder, Richard (Esther) Farrow, and Dennis Farrow; grandchildren Madeline (Mark) Hulet, Allison (Ryan) Pehrson, Camille Allton, Marcus (Lauren) Allton, James Allton, Emily Allton, Gabriel Bridges, Sophia Allton, and Stella Allton; and eight great-grandchildren. Ainslee Rae Larsen - September 04, 1982 - June 25, 2022

Departed: 06/25/2022 (Boise)
Obituary Preview: Ainslee Rae (Hurst) Larsen was born on September 4, 1982, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was tragically taken from us on June 25, 2022, when she was struck on a motorcycle by a drunk driver in Emmett, Idaho. She is survived by a beautiful daughter, Kylee (18), talented son, Jeremiah “JJ” (15), her baby, Trey (11), with an imagination that could power the world, and a supportive significant other, Travis Baessler (49), all of whom she loved dearly.  She also leaves behind her parents Ray and Lorie Hurst, brother Riley Hurst, sister Mallory Christensen, and sister Sidnee Murray, who were her foundation. She always felt their love wherever she was. Her parents were an integral part of who she became and spoke with them often. Her ties to them and those around her kept her moored in a sea of uncertainty that we all find ourselves in.   There are so many facets of her that are difficult to put in a simple description of her life. She cheered loudly for and loved those close to her. To such an extent that when she cheered for her children, the other teams felt that they had to cheer for her children as well. She was fascinated by the science of periodontal medicine and all of the ways it could improve a person’s life. She would light up at the increase of confidence and the quality of life for all of the patients she helped. She was incredibly talented in her work and felt a deep connection with those who were blessed enough to come into her life. She collected memories and smiles and kept a jar by her bed with beautiful things to say to people so she never ran out of light to bring with her wherever she went. Words and phrases cannot capture the loss we all feel or the moments with her that will never be. We thank everyone for all of their thoughts and prayers and all of those who have supported us through this senseless tragedy.  A public viewing will be held on Friday, July 1, 2022, 4:00 to 7:00pm, at the LDS chapel located at 5530 W. Venetian Drive, Eagle, Idaho 83616. Her celebration of life will be held the following day, Saturday, July 2, from 5:00 to 8:00pm at the Scentsy Commons amphitheater, 2901 E. Pine Avenue, Meridian, Idaho 83642.
