Verna Fay Dawson - November 26, 1929 - March 25, 2024

Departed: 03/25/2024 (Brookings)
Obituary Preview: Verna Fay Dawson, 94, of La Mirada, CA, was called home on March 25, 2024, in Brookings, OR. The simple life she led, full of laughter and love, was an inspirational example of a life lived well. Humble, kind, gracious, and steadfast are just some of the qualities that made up the fabric of who she was, and there are no words that can express the loss felt by those who came to know and love her.
Verna was born on November 26, 1929 in Manhattan, KS to parents, Ernest Otto Brown and Daisy Anna Jones. At age 4 after her father’s passing, she moved with her mother to Los Angeles, California, where she lived most of her life. It was there that she met her best friend and future matron of honor, Jesse White, while working her first job at Woolworth’s on Broadway in Downtown L.A. Soon after, Verna met and married the love of her life, Benny Edward Dawson, on August 7, 1949 during a passionate elopement to Las Vegas, NV. The love and commitment between Ben and Verna was so great that it could not be expressed in just one nuptial ceremony, so they renewed their vows a second time later that year on November 4, 1949 at Madeleine’s Wedding Chapel in Los Angeles, CA with all their family and friends in attendance. Verna and Ben built their home and family together in Norwalk, CA, where they welcomed their four children into this world and built a loving home for them to grow and thrive for 20 years. Verna became a member of her community in every sense of the word, offering her services not only in home to her family, but also to the people of Norwalk by way of her roles as a Sunday School Teacher at First Christian Church, a position she held for over 20 years, a volunteer staff member at Studebaker Hospital, a founding member of the Meals on Wheels Program of Norwalk, and a Girl Scout Troop Leader for the young ladies of the local chapter. In 1972, Verna and her family moved to La Mirada, CA where she lived for the next 40 years, until finally moving to Brookings, OR with her daughter, Carolyn, where she spent her remaining years surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Verna was most content when being of service to others, be it her volunteer efforts or her creative art, sewing, and crafting projects that produced many artistic expressions which adorned the walls and tables of local church boutiques and antique shops for decades. She was an avid reader and master at crossword puzzles, which she completed at an impressive rate daily for most of her life. The only time she was found to be insistent was during her nightly ritual of watching Jeopardy, an event everyone knew was not to be disturbed.
Verna was a conduit of love, good works, and dutiful service throughout her life, but of all her loving and passionate contributions, her greatest were those made to her family. Devoted to her loved ones, she led a life all would benefit from by its example. Through tragedy, she endured in support her family, through times of struggle, she persisted and created a foundation for them to remain grounded upon. She was joyful and compassionate, faithful and funny, smart and sassy - a beloved wife and a mother for the record books.
Verna has returned to the company of her beloved husband, Benny Edward Dawson; her children, Diane Gail Dawson & Thomas Edward Dawson; her daughter-in-law, Linda Rose Dawson; and her great-grandchild, Bëjorn Christian Camarillo. She is survived by her children, James Ernest Dawson and Carolyn Leigh Dawson; her grandchildren, Holly & Kore Lais, Dale & Lauren McGuffee, Jeremiah & Victoria McGuffee, and Elizabeth & Matthew Camarillo; and her great-grandchildren, Kaleb, Jadence, Benjamin, Gloria, Wyatt, Elora, August “Wolf”, and Theodore.
To honor Verna’s life of devotion, a private Memorial Service will be held at 1:00pm on May 5, 2024 at The Pacific Room of Driftwood Shores, 88416 1st Ave., Florence, OR 97439, followed by a Graveside Committal Service, set to take place at 11:00am on May 24, 2024 at Little Lake Cemetery, 11959 Lakeland Rd., Santa Fe Springs, CA 90670.
Our family would like to express our sincere thanks and gratitude to all those who have expressed their condolences and offered their support during this challenging time. Verna brought joy and light into this world that remains bright within us in her absence. Her legacy of selfless love and service will endure forever in our cherished memories to inspire those of us blessed to have been a part of her journey. We will hold her in our hearts until we reach our place beside her once again in God’s Heavenly Kingdom.

Beverly Louise Larsson - July 02, 1921 - January 01, 2024

Departed: 01/01/2024 (Brookings)
Obituary Preview: Beverly Larsson
Beverly Louise Larsson went home to be with the Lord on January 1, 2024, at the age of 102. Beverly was born on July 2, 1921 to Cashus and Martha Phillips and had three siblings, William, Bobbie, and Virginia. She attended school in Clatskanie, Newberg, Gold Hill, and graduated from North Bend High School in 1939 with the class Scholarship Medal.
Beverly met Richard “Dick” Larsson at a dance in Marshfield (Coos Bay). Money came hard back then. As Mom would tell the story, Dick would work to earn a little money to take her on a date and, after dropping her off at her house, he would have to leave his car and walk home until he earned enough money for gasoline and the next date. Dick was persistent in his courtship and they were married on January 11, 1941. After World War II, they returned to Coos Bay to raise their growing family while Dick worked for Marshall Wells and, later, Coast-to-Coast Hardware stores. Dick’s work had him on the road and away from home too much.
In 1960, they moved to Gold Beach after purchasing the local Coast-to-Coast Hardware store. Mom always said that they moved to Gold Beach to both get Dad off the road and for the educational and extracurricular opportunities Gold Beach offered their children.
After selling the hardware store, Mom and Dad were true road warriors, traveling all around the state following their children and grandchildren compete in a multitude of athletic and equestrian events. Their efforts were recognized in 1996, when they were named Grandparents of the Year by the Oregon Wrestling Association. Mom loved her Oregon Ducks football. She attended dozens of home games even late into her 90s and would never miss a game on television. While she loved all of these activities, she really just wanted to continue being involved with her family. Mom was our rock. She was defined by her warmth and caring, her values, the importance of family, and her belief in God.
Beverly was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Richard Larsson, Sr. and her oldest Son, Richard Larsson, Jr. She is survived by five children and their spouses, William “Bill” Larsson and wife, Debi; Laurence “Larry” Larsson and wife, Emery;  Brian Larsson and wife, Teri; Jill Bell and husband, Tad; Jan Hayes and husband, Storm, and daughter-in-law, Pam Larsson.
She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, extended family members, and numerous close friends. If you asked Mom, her family were all angels and could do no wrong.

Departed: 09/12/2023 (Brookings)
Obituary Preview: Ruth Anne Becktell, known affectionately as Ruth, went to her heavenly home with her savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 12, 2023, in Brookings, Oregon, at the age of 79 after fighting with cancer for three years. She was born on March 15, 1944, in Dallas, Texas, to the late Herbert W. Butt and Olive Butt.
Ruth will be immediately missed by her surviving family: Mark R. Becktell, husband, Valerie J. Becktell, daughter, Martin R. Becktell, son, who will be mourning their loss of their dear Wife and Mother respectively.
In the words of her husband, Mark, "Ruth was the sweetest, kindest, caring, and most generous person God ever put on this green earth. She had a heart of gold and touched the lives of everyone she met.” And her son Martin remembers her as, “A truth seeker, curious, intuitive, joyful, and a tireless servant of her family and friends.” Ruth will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

She gardened, and read about homeschooling, becoming one of the pioneering homeschool mothers in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, where she and Mark moved to in 1974 and where she gave birth to her children. She also read voraciously and gained numerous friends whom she would selflessly serve when needed.
Ruth attended Coeur d’Alene Bible Church for years and then Christ the King Lutheran Church, also in Coeur d’Alene, where she played the piano for services and accompanied soloists and special choirs. Being the daughter of a pastor, her Evangelical Christian faith was at the center of her identity her whole life and she constantly turned to her Bible and prayer and sacred music for guidance and comfort.
Ruth will be lovingly remembered by her surviving siblings: Elaine Warner, Dorothy Lewis, Lois Tusant, Naomi Altemus, Irene Weldon, Jonathon Weldon, Ester Cook, and Rachel Weldon. She was preceded in death by her brother, Stephen Butt.

Obituary Preview: On August 15, my dear hubby sailed into the sunset after fighting off pneumonia for over two weeks, just shy of his 85th birthday. We met in 1964, married in 1965 and moved to Brookings soon after.
Not only do I miss him incredibly, but 6 children, 14 grands and a number of great-grands and still growing are going to miss his booming presence. Add to that his sisters and families, cousins, friends and fellow fishers, his faithful dog Dirk and many more.
We will celebrate his life on Friday, August 25th. Viewing for those who want will be at Redwood Memorial from 10-11am. Rosary will be recited at Star of the Sea Catholic Church at 12:30pm, followed by funeral Mass at 1pm and informal reception after at the parish hall around 2pm. Come and join us as you can.
Burial will be, per his wishes, at Ward Memorial Cemetery, high on the hill overlooking the ocean where he spent most his life commercial fishing.
Like the song says, Bill Goergen lived hard, died hard, and left beautiful memories. A native Oregonian, he lived and attended schools in McMinnville, Roseburg and Port Orford, and then lived in Coos Bay before settling in the early 60’s in Brookings. However, that doesn’t count all the fishing towns up and down the Pacific, chasing tuna, crab, bottom fish, shrimp, black cod, salmon and more.
After graduating from Pacific High School in Port Orford, Bill majored in Business at Oregon State University, then worked various jobs including fishing, before enlisting in the U.S. Army in the early 60’s, serving in the electronics field in Germany. After returning home in 1964, he took his Army savings and purchased the fishing vessel “Takli”, going back to his first love on the sea. Author Salvadore Genoves once said “…there are three kinds of men: those who are alive, those who are dead, and those who go to sea,” Commercial fishermen in those days fit that example, especially Willy the Fox, so named by his fellow fishermen in his early Port Orford days. His wife Peggy and eventually 6 children fit into that life running up and down the coast with camping gear and kids piled into the car to wherever Dad was delivering his catch.
After fishing the “Takli” for a number of years, Bill set his sights on the “Karen”, a multi-purpose boat that let him expand into drag and shrimp fishing. The family was well settled into the home they still occupy in Brookings, so life expanded into school and sports activities.
In the early 90’s, a group of fishermen formed a partnership to take on the lack of ice needed to expand fishing trips and marketing. Bill led the way to finding grants and loans to build the facility that became Harbor Ice and still serves the fishing industry at the port. Issues in seafood marketing led the group to also lease a facility at the Harbor to sell their own products. Bill went back to school to gain the skills required to process and license their catches. What became Chetco Seafood Co. expanded to include a seafood market and small restaurant. Gradually Bill bought out the other partners, and the business became a buyer for fish brought in by small local boats, providing fresh product for the business. When he retired, the business changed hands to his son and his partner and exists today as Catalyst Seafood.
Bill’s life was filled not only with business, but also his children’s activities and his love of hunting in all forms. Trips to Eastern Oregon for big game alternated with bird hunting with his well-loved dogs. He especially enjoyed trap shooting and reloading his own ammo. He and wife Peggy tried to get away each year for a vacation to special places in Hawaii, Mexico, or to visit family. As the family expanded with grandchildren and then great-grandchildren, and expanded again with special groups of friends, Christmas, holidays and camping trips up the Chetco were well attended and exciting events.
Bill was preceded by his parents, Leo and Louise Goergen, brother Richard (Dick) Goergen, son Michael Goergen, and a great number of family and friends, including his fellow fishermen. He is survived by his wife Peggy and children: Terese Britt and daughter Amie’s family; Bryan (Tammie) Goergen and sons Mark, Daniel and Christian and families; Anella (Tony Gaffke) Ehlers and sons Adam and Izak and families; Willy (Mandi) Goergen and children Jessie, Andrew, Hannah and families; and granddaughters Cnaushua Madere, Chanda Sollinger and daughter Corinna; his sisters Donna (Ron) Terzenbach and children Penny and Aaron; Patsy Gunther and son Eddie and family; nephews Todd and Matt Goergen and mother Bethna and families; and much loved cousins also survive as well as all of Peggy’s family, which became his family too. In addition, there are a great number of friends who are family, especially all those that called him Grampa.
Services were held at Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Brookings with the assistance of Redwood Memorial Chpel. Memorials may be made in his name to his favorite charities: Wounded Warrior Project, St. Jude’s Hospital for Children or Catholic Charities, USA.
