Christine Kate Fanty - May 29, 1939 - May 15, 2024

Departed: 05/15/2024 (Leavenworth)
Obituary Preview: Christine Kate Fanty, 84, of Leavenworth, died Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at KU Medical Center. Christine was born May 29, 1939, in Munich, Germany. She grew-up during and in the shadow of World War II with her mom, Anne, her aunt, Kate and brother, Manfred.
In 1956, 18-year-old Christine came to America to be a nanny for the Benenson family in New Jersey. She spent eight years with them helping in raising three girls, Emily, Carol and Barbara. During that time, she met her husband, Albert Fanty, and they were married on Dec. 16, 1966. They lived in New York City and had their first child, Maurice, on May 2, 1969. Later moving to New Jersey, they had their second child, Michele, on May 8, 1971. Christine was a stay-at-home mom raising her two children with Albert until Albert’s sudden death on June 14, 1980. Overnight she became a single parent. Christine then moved her family to Leavenworth to be closer to Albert’s family in 1981 where she lived until her death.
She worked at Armed Forces Insurance for over 20 years, retiring as the supervisor of the office cleaning staff. She also helped out with the monthly birthday lunches and catered for many of the board meetings.
Christine was always looking to stay active in her life. Each year, while the kids were growing up, she would make sure to take her family on a vacation. These vacations were something everyone looked forward to. After the kids moved out, she continued to take a summer trip each year on her own. Breckenridge, Colo., was one of her favorites just to be in the mountains and she would go just about every year. Christine and Michele would also take weekend and day trips to places around Kansas City to places Christine wanted to go. Sometimes they would go to Branson for a day trip because she wanted to shop or eat at a restaurant there. Instead of bringing back souvenirs from places, she would bring back some type of local food. This is something that she has passed down to her children.
Christine also joined the Y in Bonner Springs and went to the gym to swim and workout five or six days a week, only stopping in the last six months because of a leg wound. She had lots of friends at the Y that she would go out with once a week for lunch after working out and then they would have a monthly birthday potluck lunch. She loved to cook and would always be looking for new recipes to try out. If you were at an event that she made food for, you more than likely tried one of the dishes she brought, because she could never just bring one. Christine also became very active in 5K’s, competing in many around Kansas City and in different states, often finishing in the top third in her age group. Getting an age group metal was always a big highlight for her. She was proud of all her age group metals and had them hanging on the wall of her home.
Even though she liked to be active and out doing things, her house was the place she loved to be most. She had a big yard and for many years she would have a huge vegetable garden with tomatoes, lettuce, green beans, squash and zucchini. She loved the fresh vegetables she could use in her cooking or eat in a salad. When at home you could find her out in the yard working in either her vegetable garden or her many flower gardens. Even when she was nearing death when she would have a moment of clarity she would say I’m going home and try to get out of bed.
Christine’s spiritual life was also very important to her. She is a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church.
Even through Christine’s death was sudden and shocking, she has lived a very good life.
She is survived by her children, Maurice Fanty of Olathe, Michelle (Michael) Goetz of Leavenworth; and brother, Manfred Reithmeier of Munich, Germany.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at St. Joseph Church. Burial will follow at Ft. Leavenworth National Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church or Best Friends Animal Society.

Angelo Juarez - May 30, 1962 - May 01, 2024

Departed: 05/01/2024 (Leavenworth)
Obituary Preview: The world lost a kind, ornery soul whose many mijas and mijos will miss dearly.
Angelo Juarez, 61, of Tonganoxie, Kan., died Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at his home.
He was born May 30, 1962, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Joe and Dolores (Acosta) Juarez.
Mr. Juarez grew up in the Roanoke neighborhood of Kansas City, Mo. He attended Westport High School. In his younger years he worked at Pizza Hut and Rosedale Bar-B-Q.
He saw his fair share of rock concerts in the 1980s, including Journey and Lynyrd Skynryd. His signature wardrobe for those concerts were sleeveless T-shirts, cut-off shorts with striped tube socks and Nike Cortez shoes.
Mr. Juarez completed an apprenticeship as a wireman journeyman electrician in 2000 and then worked in IBEW Local 124 in that role until 2007, when he had to stop working due to health issues.
He moved to Tonganoxie several years ago to be closer to his niece, Erica Colvert and her children, Andrew, Holly, Journey and Michael. Erica's family began taking care of "Uncle" several years ago and remained his caretakers until his death.
Mr. Juarez made frequent trips to the doctor for dialysis in his later years, but always had a glowing disposition. He wore Hawaiian shirts to many of his dialysis treatments. His great-niece Journey ironed those vibrant shirts weekly in preparation for his clinical trips.
Mr. Juarez’s kindness shined through frequent cookie-baking dates with nephews, nieces and their friends, along with a slew of kickball games in the Tonganoxie Public Library parking lot with some of those same youth. One could hear his favorite Motown tunes playing as he whipped up baked goods with family and friends. Mr. Juarez unofficially provided free trash service in his residential development. He picked up neighbors’ bags on his motorized scooter and dropped them in the complex’s Dumpster. His mischievous side also made appearances. Mr. Juarez told of a teacher duct-taping him to a desk for misbehaving when he was in school. In his later years he liked to tease youths and on occasion would follow them on his scooter while holding out his prosthetic eye.
Though Mr. Juarez never experienced a safari, he did encounter his fair share of zebra cakes, as they were his favorite Little Debbie snack.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings, an infant brother, sisters, Eva Juarez, Anna Lupercio and Barbara Mata and brother, Ricky Juarez.
Survivors include his former wife, Debbie Pacheco; sister, Christina (Jose) Ponce, Kansas City, Mo.; and brother, Raymond (Nancy) Juarez, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; 18 nieces and nephews; and 33 great-nieces and nephews.
A GoFundMe account has been established in Mr. Juarez’s name to cover funeral costs at gofundme.com/manage/support-for-angelos-family-in-difficult-times. Arrangements in care of R.L. Leintz Funeral Home.

Janet Marie Smith - August 02, 1939 - April 15, 2024

Departed: 04/15/2024 (Leavenworth)
Obituary Preview: Janet Marie (Arnold) Smith 84, of Leavenworth, Kan., was called home to her Savior on Monday, April 15, 2024. She was born Aug. 2, 1939, in Leavenworth, Kan., to Floyd and Marie (Kreutzer) Arnold, the youngest of five children.
She graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1957, where she was an avid cheerleader for the Leavenworth Pioneers. She then went to work for Hallmark Cards Production Center where she met the love of her life, Charles G. “Jake” Smith. Jake asked her out and one of their first dates was attending a Catholic church service. This date was such a success that they exchanged wedding vows on May 21, 1960. Their union continued to grow stronger with the birth of two sons, Craig (Vicki) Smith of Grafton, Mass., and Kyle (Kelly) Smith of Lansing, Kan.
Janet mastered the art of becoming an exceptional seamstress as taught by her second to the youngest Arnold sister, Betty “Boopie” Sager. She was meticulous in every project that she has ever completed which included her household organizational skills, quilting, cross stitching, sewing repairs and her delicious apple pies.
Besides being a very devoted Catholic wife, Janet’s most loved role was watching her family continue to grow. She took pride in her dedicated role as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, cousin and aunt to many nephews and nieces. Janet was blessed with six grandchildren, Alyssa (Kevin) Simpson, Taylor (Casey) Sutton, Anna Smith, Michaela Smith, Ryan (Natasha) Hoppe and Kelsey (Brett) Goedeke; and six great-grandchildren, Bailee, Brielle and Rhett Hoppe, Ace Goedeke, Jameson Putt and Iris Sutton. There were always ample baby quilts and cross stitched items to be handed out.
Janet was very active in the Sacred Heart Altar Society where she developed many close and long-lasting friendships. Her family and friends were very important to her and she never hesitated to provide anything she could offer to make sure that others would be surrounded in love and comfort.
Once Jake retired from Hallmark Cards, Inc. in 1996, they became even more inseparable whether it was at home watching a KU basketball or Chiefs game, traveling to Branson, going to local sporting events, attending family functions or just dancing together in their home, they truly never parted from one another. Jake preceded Janet in death Feb. 3, 2023, after almost 63 years of wedded bliss.
Jake’s collection of angels finally grew on Janet (she had no choice). So, now this very special lady has earned her angel wings and will be reunited with not only her soul mate but also with her parents and mischievous four Arnold siblings, Shirley Smith, Elsie Roberts, Betty Sager and Genie Arnold.
The family would like to thank everyone for the comfort that Janet was provided during her last month on Earth whether it was prayers, thoughts, cards, phone calls or visits. She made the statement, “I didn’t realize so many people loved me so much.” A special thank you to the Council on Aging and to the Olathe Medical Center Hospice House.
Visitation beginning with praying the rosary will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2024, at the R.L. Leintz Funeral Home.
