Departed: 03/05/2024 (Minoa)
Obituary Preview: Dr. John Thomas Hogle passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2024.  He had been sick for several months and was cared for by the 6th floor doctors, nurses and staff at the Veterans Administration Medical Center and his loving family.  He was the eldest son of the late Thomas W. Hogle and Arlene (Waters) Hogle.
After graduating from Minoa High School, Tom volunteered to serve his country and joined the Army.  He was shipped to Vietnam where he endured the deep rice paddies, heavy mosquitoes, and explosive booby traps to fight communism – something he believed strongly in doing.  He patrolled the Mekong Delta in an unusual pairing between the Army and Navy known as the Riverine Force, with his brothers from Charlie Co. 9th Infantry Division’s 4th Battalion, 47th Infantry.
Upon his discharge from the Army, Tom attended Auburn Community College, received a Bachelor of Science from SUNY (State University of New York) Oswego, and a master's degree from SUNY Plattsburgh.  He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and earned a Ph.D. in history.  Tom began his career with the University of Maryland teaching military members for the Department of Defense.  He traveled all over the world teaching in Korea, Iceland, Germany, and Bahrain, to name a few.
Tom returned to Syracuse and taught at Morrisville State College for more than 25 years.  He taught History, Philosophy, and the Constitution.  He served the campus community and local community enthusiastically.  He volunteered regularly for Constitution Day and the National Abolitionist Hall of Fame.  Tom was an enthusiastic storyteller, and his informal authentic and energetic style was well-received both in and outside the classroom.  Whether Tom was lecturing in class or sharing his thoughts on advancing Morrisville State College, it was obvious that he cared deeply about his students and the broader mission in higher education.
Tom was highly active in the United University Professionals local and served as President.  He was active in the local Democratic Party and captivated by national and local politics.
He was a passionate amateur athlete playing rugby, college and semi-pro football, and I have heard that he had a special gift for Basketball.
He is survived by his siblings, Robert (Anne), Maureen (Aida), Therese (Joan), George, Kathy (Berle) Jones, Michael (Becky), Phyllis, and Nanette (Sean) Gorman and several nieces and nephews.  He is predeceased by his sister, Marilee, and brothers, William and Curtis, niece, Renee and great-nephew, Tyler. Shirley A. Servello - May 14, 1935 - February 25, 2024

Departed: 02/25/2024 (Minoa)
Obituary Preview: Shirley A. Servello, 88, of East Syracuse, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 25, 2024.
Born in East Syracuse on May 14, 1935, she was the daughter of Edward M. and Genevieve N. Scanlon. She was a graduate of East Syracuse High School. Shirley married her high school sweetheart, Fred, in 1954 and was a devoted wife for 62 years until his passing in 2018. She worked in the business office at J. C. Penney’s in New Hartford for more than 20 years.
Shirley’s life was centered around her family. She was a devoted mother to 6 children born over 10 years, the first when 21 years old. With a husband often working long hours to support the family, Shirley somehow managed to get children to scout meetings, band and sports practices and performances, swimming lessons, first jobs, and church, to name just a few.  She also volunteered as a Girl Scout leader when the need arose. And family camping trips, water skiing, and picnics were in the mix. She was a great cook, and the family notably looked forward to an impressive stack of home`made breads on Tuesday of every week for many years. From today’s perspective her efforts were remarkable and provided a great start to those young lives.
With the kids out of the nest, Fred and Shirley moved to their new A`frame house on the shore of Oneida Lake in the 1980’s. There, Shirley enjoyed a new found peace and quiet – watching sailboats on the lake and the comings and goings of geese and ducks, sitting on the porch talking with a neighbor, quiet boat rides, enjoying her flower plantings, and working on large jigsaw puzzles in winter. And the lake was a wonderful place for family gatherings especially with the many grandchildren and great-grandchildren who gave her great joy. Her beloved Labrador retriever, Ginger, was her constant companion for 11 of those years.
Shirley played the flute in the band and sang with the glee club in high school and enjoyed watching song and dance. Late in life when she was stricken with a slow progression of dementia, music provided a wonderful relief to the stresses of this disease.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick A. Servello; mother and father; sister, Barbara Joslin; and brother, James Scanlon. Surviving are son, Frederick (Gayle) Servello Jr.; daughters, Paula Budd, Kathy (Jack) Hefter, Roxanne (John) Garrett, Louann Jenkins, and Suzanne (Teddy) Talbert; grandchildren, Travis, Matthew, Jennifer, Tamara, Rachel, Riley, Samuel, Rene’ and My’a; great`grandchildren, Jenavieve, Camy, Tyra, Aiden, Luke, Charlotte, and Stella; and many nieces and nephews.
The Servello family offers a special thanks to the dedicated memory`care staff of the Iroquois Nursing Home for their caring manner in all that they did for our mother and grandmother.
Calling hours will be Saturday, March 9 from 9:30 am to 11:00 am at R.H. Schepp & Son Minoa Chapel, 6530 Schepps Corners Rd, Minoa.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 am at St. Matthews Church, 229 W. Yates St., East Syracuse.  Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Minoa.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who want to pay their respects. They help to notify others of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and provide a sense of closure for loved ones.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer will gather information from the family and create a concise yet meaningful tribute to the person who has passed away.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral or memorial service, charity donations, and any other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. A longer obituary can provide more detailed information about the person's life, while a shorter one might focus on the essential facts.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral homes allow you to upload photos of the deceased. This can help personalize the obituary and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. They may require specific formatting, word count, or deadlines for publication.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary is a more detailed tribute that celebrates the person's life and accomplishments.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance as a way to ensure their legacy is told in their own words. This can be a therapeutic exercise and provide comfort to loved ones after your passing.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the newspaper or platform. Some publications offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge per word or line. Online obituary platforms often provide affordable pricing plans or even free services.

Can I edit an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, it's possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after publication. However, this may depend on the publication's policies and deadlines. It's essential to review the obituary carefully before submission to avoid errors.

What if I want to keep my loved one's obituary private?

If you prefer not to share your loved one's obituary publicly, you can opt for a private or password-protected online obituary. This allows you to control who can view the tribute while still sharing it with close family and friends.

Can I include quotes or lyrics in an obituary?

Absolutely! Including meaningful quotes, lyrics, or poems can add a personal touch to the obituary and reflect the personality or interests of the deceased.

How do I find an old obituary?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries that maintain historical records. Many online obituary platforms also offer search functions for archived tributes.

Can I republish an old obituary?

If you have permission from the original publisher or copyright holder, you can republish an old obituary. Be sure to check copyright laws and obtain necessary permissions before sharing.

What if I want to write multiple obituaries for different audiences?

This is a common practice when there are different groups of friends, family members, or colleagues who would like to remember the deceased in distinct ways. You can tailor each obituary to suit the audience and publication.

Can I include humor in an obituary?

Absolutely! Humor can be a wonderful way to celebrate someone's life and personality. Just be sure to consider the tone and audience when adding humorous elements.

How do I handle mistakes in an already-published obituary?

Contact the publication or platform immediately if you notice errors in the published obituary. They will work with you to correct the mistakes as soon as possible.

What if I'm struggling to write an obituary due to grief?

This is completely normal. Consider seeking support from a friend, family member, or professional writer who can help you craft a meaningful tribute during this difficult time.

Can I include charitable donations in lieu of flowers in an obituary?

Yes! Many families prefer donations to charities or organizations that were important to their loved one rather than receiving flowers. This information can be included in the obituary.

How do I share an online obituary on social media?

Most online obituary platforms provide easy sharing options for social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. You can also copy and paste the link into emails or messaging apps.

What if I want to create a permanent online memorial for my loved one?

You can create a permanent online memorial through various websites that offer this service. These memorials often allow visitors to leave condolences, share memories, and upload photos.

Can I include videos or audio clips in an online obituary?

Yes! Many online platforms allow you to upload multimedia content like videos or audio clips that celebrate your loved one's life and personality.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

This depends on the platform or website hosting the obituary. Some may keep it available indefinitely, while others may remove it after a certain period. Be sure to check their policies before publishing.
