Patrick Charles Slusser - July 29, 1942 - May 14, 2024

Departed: 05/14/2024 (Rochester)
Obituary Preview: Patrick Charles Slusser, age 81 of Rochester, passed away May 14, 2024. Patrick grew up in a modest, loving home in Grosse Pointe Park, MI. He was the oldest of eight children: Michael (the late Linda) Slusser, the late Kathy (Jack) Ortman, Mary (Mark) Shantz, Chuck (Sharon) Slusser, Tim (Cindy) Slusser, Judy Love and Brian (Kathy) Slusser. He graduated from Saint Ambrose High School in 1960, went on to receive his Associates Degree in Applied Arts in Industrial Technology and continued his education in Industrial Management at Baker College.
Patrick married Andrea Bury in October 1966. He told his family that the best decision he ever made in his life was to marry Andrea. The couple had two children, Shawn (Amber) and Michelle. Throughout his life, Pat encouraged his children to stretch themselves to attain their dreams. He was a patient and reliable source of strength and wisdom. He lived by the principle that much can be gained by listening rather than talking and he was often the quiet one at a family gathering; enjoying every moment of time spent with those he loved. Later in life, he embraced his role as grandpa and took great pride in all three of his grandsons: Aaron, Brandon and Garrett. They were the light of his life and he treasured them. He taught them to be kind, humble and grateful. As the spiritual leader of the family, he inspired them to grow in their faith in Jesus.
Patrick joined the Army National Guard in 1964, rose to the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged six years later. He worked for Chrysler Corporation for 42 years; first as a Die Designer and then (after training in CAD CAM) as a Die Process Engineer. In 1994, he became a UAW Chaplain and continued to serve in that role for years to come. He had a love of cars and enjoyed attending car shows and watching NASCAR races.
Patrick had an unwavering, positive mindset and enjoyed making a difference in the lives of others and the community. He was very active in a number of volunteer organizations. He was elected President of the Sterling Heights Jaycees in 1976 and served for two terms. During those years, his chapter had the highest membership enrollment in all of its history. He felt an enormous amount of personal satisfaction by contributing to the betterment of his community through the Jaycees.
Patrick was a man of faith and committed his life to being a son of the Lord. He attributed all of the blessings in his life to Christ. He embodied the best of qualities: unconditional love, strength of spirit and an unending generosity. He wanted others to share in the joy of Christ and was an active member over the years in several church congregations including: Spirit Life Christian Center, the Joy Community Church and the St. Jane Francis de Chantel Catholic Church. He had an immense passion for his spiritual work and accepted everyone with an open heart and spent countless hours providing guidance and support at the Gospel Healing House and spreading the word of the Lord as a member of the Full Gospel Business Men’s organization.
He became a Licensed Minister in 2005 and proudly officiated the wedding of his god-daughter Kelly (Leroy) Slusser Kincaid in 2016.

Cecilia Betancourt - August 18, 1931 - April 20, 2024

Departed: 04/20/2024 (Rochester)
Obituary Preview: CECILIA BETANCOURT (1931-2024) Cecilia Betancourt was the heart and soul of her family. Always kind to everybody she met, people loved her. It was very apparent to all who met her that Cecilia was very unique. She is truly loved and surely missed!
Born in small-town Colombia, Cecilia often spoke of a happy life with family and friends. Her father was a fun-loving carpenter and electrician, retiring as the chief electrician at a Medellin brewery, and her beloved mother was the center of their family, albeit with a firm hand. The 3rd of 7 children, Cecilia was admired for her strong character and nicknamed “Ingrid Bergman” due to her resemblance to the legendary “Casablanca” actress. She trained as a corporate secretary in the 1950s and worked for a large textile manufacturer in Medellin.
She was so pretty, in fact, that her future husband, William, was instantly smitten when they met in 1956 during a festival in his village. Cecilia later remarked that she first noticed William’s quiet nature but was also struck by his gentle, loving gaze. They began dating but William moved to Michigan on a residency visa when sponsored by his brother to train and work as a product designer for General Motors. They wrote love letters and visited over the next several years but their future together was uncertain.
In 1966, Cecilia bravely immigrated on a residency visa to Queens, New York, and worked as an executive secretary for Best & Company. The job did not last long because William, living in Royal Oak, Michigan, promptly called her, drove to New York City, brought her to Michigan and married her! Together, they raised 2 sons and doted on their 4 grandchildren. Cecilia loved cooking, baking, gardening, vintage cinema and classical music. She also loved to travel, having visited most US states, Canadian provinces, South American countries and European capitals. A devout Catholic, she regularly attended mass at St Anastasia in Troy and St Mary of the Hills in Rochester Hills. Cecilia loved on all of her family, always sending them home with bunuelos, pan de queso or empanadas. She taught them to make several Colombian recipes yet they were all left with the awareness that their versions would never compare to hers. Her family loved Cecilia’s holiday gifts because she always added their favorite snacks or something very practical like hand sanitizer or moisturizing lotion. In her cute, accented English, she ended every phone call to her family with “I love you very much, please give my hugs and kisses to everyone.”
Cecilia lived an amazing life yet we would have enjoyed a bit more time with her. Please keep her family and friends in your thoughts, then go hug the special people in your life and tell them you love them.

Clifford Thomas McPeak - January 13, 1942 - April 05, 2024

Departed: 04/05/2024 (Rochester)
Obituary Preview: Clifford Thomas “Kip” McPeak January 13, 1942 – April 5, 2024
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Kip spent his youth in the northeast suburbs of that city. He graduated from Kirtland High School in 1960 and went on to get his Undergrad and Master’s degrees in Physical Education at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He later obtained his PhD in Psycho Motor Research from The Ohio State University. Both schools would remain very near and dear to his heart for the entirety of his life. He would often say that his favorite class while at Miami was a Football class - taught by the one and only Bo Schembechler. He remained an avid and loyal fan of the Buckeyes and the Miami Redskins/RedHawks for the entirety of his life.
He was a professor of Physical Education at Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio, and from there was hired as the Executive Director of the United States Volleyball Association at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In that position he traveled the world to be with the men’s teams as they competed globally including to the Olympics multiple times. His last professional posting was as Professor of Sports Management at Alfred State University in Alfred, NY. There he influenced the lives of many young men and women as he taught them how to earn a living from being involved in sports. He retired to Michigan to be close to his son and the rest of his family.
He is survived by people who he loved and loved him back: Matthew & Amanda McPeak, son and daughter-in-law; Tommy McPeak & Aliyah Mercado, grandson & grand-daughter – all of Rochester, Michigan; Jean (McPeak) Pizzi and Richard Pizzi, sister and brother-in-law – of Bloomfield Twp., Michigan; and Judy McPeak & Doug Cannato, sister and brother-in-law – of Charlottesville, Virginia.
He loved all sports from youth to high school to college to professional. He would go in person when he could and watch on TV otherwise. He loved playing cards and was an excellent Euchre player. Beyond that, he loved spending time with his son and the rest of his family, going up north on family vacations, going out to dine at restaurants with great seafood or steaks, and he loved to read adventures. His last year and a half were spent at WellBridge of Rochester Hills, and they wonderfully assisted him with day-to-day care. He continued to love his family and his sports from there and participated in various family bowl pools and March Madness pools as they occurred. Ever the competitor, he won some pools and not others but always actively participated and insisted his bowl selections or basketball brackets would end up being “the key” and that he would win!
He has friends from all over the country with whom he built relationships and tried to maintain contact. They were all important to him. He would often speak of them with a smile on his face as he remembered their shared history.
Kip was a man of family, of strong convictions, and a teacher at heart. He was a man with a ready grin and a twinkle in his eye. He will be much missed by all.
Note: Those wishing to make contributions in his name are asked to consider Go4Graham, www.go4graham.org, an organization he became aware of while living in Colorado. It’s mission is to shred the stigma of mental health issues – focused on physical fitness and activity. Also please consider donations to a Little League organization in your area.

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's often published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They help to notify people of the funeral or memorial service details, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the grieving family.

Who writes an obituary?

The responsibility of writing an obituary usually falls on the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The person writing the obituary should have a good understanding of the deceased person's life, accomplishments, and personality.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the deceased person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, such as date, time, location, and burial details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform it will be published on. Generally, it's recommended to keep it concise and focused on the most important details. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 150-250 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and newspapers allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased person. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and help readers connect with the person being honored.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

The process for submitting an obituary to a newspaper varies depending on the publication. You can usually find submission guidelines on the newspaper's website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Be prepared to provide the written obituary text and any accompanying photos.

Can I write my own obituary?

How long do online obituaries stay online?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform or website it's published on. Some websites may keep obituaries online permanently, while others may remove them after a certain period of time (e.g., one year).

Can I edit an online obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, yes. If you need to make corrections or updates to an online obituary, you can contact the platform or website where it was published and request changes. They may require verification of your identity or relationship to the deceased before making any edits.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is typically shorter than an obituary and only provides basic information about the deceased person's passing. An obituary is longer and includes more biographical details about their life.

Can I write multiple versions of an obituary for different audiences?

Yes, you may want to create different versions of an obituary tailored to specific groups or communities that knew the deceased person. For example, one version might focus on their professional achievements for colleagues and industry peers.
