Obituary Preview: Valerie Ann Jones was born on March 25, 1969 to Lynn and Jane (Berkheimer) Jones. She dedicated her life to helping others. She was always a haven of authenticity, virtue and love. She was very close with her large family and enjoyed crafting and cackling with them. She learned from a young age that life was all about living and living loud she did! She LIVED it the best she could for as long as she could. Val was not blessed to have children of her own, but she was lucky enough to find the love of her life in Chuck, who was happy to share his children and grandchildren. Her zest for life lives on through her nieces and nephews who also considered her a mom. In the last days of her life she was surrounded by the love of her extended family and passed peacefully. Val was preceded in death by her parents, brother Scotty, nephew Andrew Fritz, great niece Ava Arnold, her first spouse, Vicki Carnicom, and very recently the love of her life, Chuck Cover. She is survived by her siblings: Ross Jones, Bruce Jones, Carmen Jones, Kurt Jones (Darla), Dawn Keim, Stephanie Ellington (Steve), Jennifer Cook (Richard), Heather Glass (Dan), and Keith Jones (Karen), along with her 13 nieces and nephews, her step children and grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 pm Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at Neidecker, Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1124 Fulton St. Port Clinton, OH where visitation will be held on Tuesday from 11:00 am until the time of the service.

He was born October 30, 1939 in D’Hanis, TX the son of Felix and Maria de Refugia (Mendez) Ortega. He graduated from Hondo High School in 1958 in Hondo Texas and married Dolores Polanco on January 25, 1960. He worked at Standard Products in Port Clinton for 33 years and later worked at Tibbels Marina for several years. He enjoyed working with wood, building a beautiful playhouse for his granddaughters. He also enjoyed watching football and boxing. He was best known for his humor and the stories he would share with his family and friends.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years Dolores; daughter Debora (Dan) Ortega-Carr of Columbus, OH; son: Robert (Hedy) Ortega of Lakewood, OH; grandchildren: Rachel and Rebecca Carr; brothers: Ray Ortega of San Antonio, TX, Miguel Ortega of San Antonio, TX; sister: Teresa Carrales of Pharr, TX. Obituary Preview: Susan "Sue" (Nelder) Graybill, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on April 25, 2024 at her home in Catawba Island, Ohio. She was 74 years old.
Born on June 23, 1949 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Sue was the daughter of the late Anne and Roy Nelder. On October 5, 1968, she married her beloved husband William Graybill, who preceded her in death after 46 years of marriage.
Family and friendships were Sue's greatest joys in life. She had a gift for making profound connections, listening without judgment, and finding ways to nurture those around her. Sue was passionate about gardening, art, and engaging with nature through neighborhood walks and exercise classes around Catawba Island.
While working various jobs over the years, including as a hairdresser and at Gordon Lumber Co. in Port Clinton, Sue's true calling was bringing people together and enriching their lives.
Sue will be deeply missed by her sons Scott (Suzanna) Graybill of Mansfield, Eric (Theresa) Graybill of Huron, and Adam (Megan) Graybill of Hudson; her seven beloved grandchildren Kaylee, Marisa, Ryan, Grant, Gavin, Josh and Blake; her sisters Jane Francis, Carol (Ron) Corvari, Sandy Smith; her brother David Nelder; and her life partner of six years, Ray Smith of Berlin Heights.
Visitation will be Friday, May 3, 2024 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm at Neidecker, Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1124 Fulton St. Port Clinton, where funeral services will begin at 12:00 noon on Friday.

The daughter of Jeff Weaver and Michelle (Macut) Farris. She married Tyler Pravlik in a beautiful “Dream Come True” ceremony on January 13, 2023. She had an adventurous, full of life infectious, personality. Brenna was a Registered Nurse at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, OH since 2018. She always had a passion for helping people. Growing up she was a PCHS cheerleader. She loved hanging out with family and friends. She enjoyed walks with Tyler and Ruby, and had always felt one with nature. She was born with a naturally kind soul and heart of gold. She was always laughing and smiling with her contagious smile that everyone loved. She made everyone feel like family and was always a joy to be around. Car shows with her husband were a favorite activity and she loved anything old or antique with a unique history to it.

Kayleen was a retired opticion of over 30 years and previously belonged to St. Johns Lutheran Church of Port Clinton. She never met a stranger, was an avid reader enjoying the adventures books offered and was a diamond art expert. She enjoyed meeting with old friends and new people at the Port Clinton Senior Center and was always up for anything. She enjoyed time with family and friends, movies, antique malls, shopping, and large Daiquiries. She was a beautiful person to befriend with her kindness, sassiness, silliness, she was funny and so so smart.
Surviving are her children: Son; Kelly Eugene DiCicco along with his Husband, David Kosar of Portland, Oregon, Son; Tony Alan DiCicco along with his wife, Kara DiCicco of Pemberville, Ohio, Daughter; Angela Elaine Coleman along with her Husband, Johnny Coleman of Stockbridge, Georgia, Daughter; Nicole Marie Crisp along with her Husband James Smith, Jr. of McDonough, Georgia; seven grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren. Kayleen's surving siblings: Alan Walker of Port Clinton, Ohio, Vicky Mostafavi and her Husband Rassoul Mostafavi of Magnolia, Texas and Dale Gensel and his Wife, Patricia Gensel of Bowling Green, Ohio. Obituary Preview: Abigail L. Wilford, 15, of Port Clinton, OH died tragically by suicide Friday, March 29, 2024. She was born November 4, 2008 in Toledo, OH the daughter of Tyson Wilford and Jenny (Eversole) Wilford. Abigail was an eighth grader at Danbury Middle School.
Abigail struggled nearly her entire life with mental illness, though she masked her pain so well to those who knew her. She was always so loving, caring, and supportive to everyone around her. She was active in the high school marching band and the school play. Abigail loved dogs. She would stop every dog owner on the street and ask to give their dog pets and love. On busy days, Abigail would emphatically share a count of every different dog she managed to pet throughout the day. In Abigail’s free time, you could find her riding a roller coaster at Cedar Point or walking around the neighborhood with friends; probably drinking her favorite iced latte or bubble tea.

As well as a whole host of friends, neighbors, teachers, classmates, and more who fell under the spell of this bright, beautiful, and fun girl.

Obituary Preview: Gena Spencer, 66 passed away on March 28, 2024 along with her fiancé Patrick Winke. She was born on November 9, 1957, in Port Clinton. She had an incredible ability to always find love and happiness with her daily life, and her personality was always contagious!! The simplest pleasures in life brought Gena such joy, either with friends and family or with the love of her life, Pat Winke.
Sports were her pastime. She loved the Cleveland Browns, The Ohio State Buckeyes, boating and fishing, but most importantly, was the love she had for her dog, Gracie.
She was the daughter of Claude and Genevieve (Groves)Spencer. For years, she worked at Otto and Urban Flower Shop and always considered it a hobby as she loved flowers and gardening. She also worked at The Beacon newspaper and then finally the Clerk of courts at the PC Courthouse before retiring.
She is survived by her sister Sue Brown, nephew's: Matt (Ruth) Brown, Mike (Ken Pace) Brown, and niece Renee Brown York; great nephews: Nathan (kelley) Brown, Ryan (Ann)Brown, Jared (Brittany Wahl) York and Kiya (Ali) Attar and eight great-great nieces and nephews. Pat was born August 31, 1952 in Port Clinton, OH the son of Albert A. and Margaret T. (Darr) Winke. Pat was a union carpenter working at Davis Besse and also SE Johnson. He was a charter boat captain and
a professional guide on Lake Erie since 1979 offering both sport and ice fishing. His biggest enjoyment was seeing his customers get a big catch. He was an avid fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cleveland Browns. He and Gena rarely missed watching a game and they loved seeing The Ohio State Marching Band perform at Put-in-Bay last summer. He loved their dog,

Thomas "Gibby" Giblin - January 20, 1948 - March 23, 2024

Obituary Preview: Thomas Patrick “Gibby” Giblin, 76, of South Bass Island, passed away peacefully March 20, 2024 while in the care of hospice. He was born January 20,1948 to Mr and Mrs Leo Giblin of Amherst, Ohio. In his early years, he was a history teacher, also working as a prison guard while on breaks from school. He was extremely proud of his degree from Miami of Ohio. He found his way to SBI, a place he called home. Here he will always be remembered as a nomad and handyman; helping many with island projects along the way. He loved to cook. He often bragged about his chicken paprika, saying “I’ll make it for you sometime.”
Gibby was always a joker and charmer. He was quick with a smile or practical joke. He loved to dance with all the girls. His Irish charm was always shining through.

James W. "Jim" Warrick - October 24, 1937 - March 12, 2024

Obituary Preview: James “Jim” Warrick, 86, passed away Tuesday March 12, 2024 at ProMedica Toledo Hospital, after a brief illness. Jim was an inspiration to all who knew him and watched him wage a 13 year battle with Parkinson’s. His Parkinson’s was no match for his strength, endurance, and positive attitude and it never held him back. He continued to be an active and very social resident of Port Clinton.
He was born October 24, 1937 in Columbiana, Ohio to the late Everett and Miriam (Detwiler) Warrick. Jim graduated from Columbiana High School in 1955. He then went on to study at Ohio University, graduating in 1960 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He joined the U.S. Gypsum Co. in 1959 as a co-op and joined the firm permanently in 1960 in Gypsum, Ohio. He enjoyed a long career at USG as General Superintendent and Engineering Manager and was a mentor to many future USG leaders, retiring in 2000 after 40 years of service. His first year at Gypsum he met Dotty Fischer in the front office, marrying her on June 24, 1961.
Jim was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, The Port Clinton Yacht Club, Elks, and member of the steering committee that started the Port Clinton Lighthouse. He was an honorary member and official fish fryer for Dotty’s PCHS class of 1954. Jim was a regular at the PCHS morning basketball league, befriending a new generation of athletes. He was a dedicated lifelong Redskins fans, enjoyed attending Port Clinton High School football and basketball games and a huge OSU fan, sporting their logo almost every day.
In retirement, his favorite pastime was traveling with Dotty for over 20 years and spending time with his children and 4 grandchildren, attending their various sports and events.
Jim most recently lived at the Vineyard on Catawba Island. He lived and flourished, at “The Chalet” for the past 2 years, continuing to enjoy his life. Our thanks to the staff at the Chalet for the love and care they showed our dad.
Jim is survived by his children, Barbie(Brad) Price of Cincinnati, OH, Debbie Ballinger of Cincinnati, OH and Jeff (Ray Fridenstine) of Chicago, IL.; grandchildren Meredith Ballinger of Orleans, MA and Graham Ballinger of Cincinnati, OH and Chris (Kayla) Price of Norwood, OH and Jillian (Zach King) Price of Covington, KY, sister-in-law Phyllis Warrick of Plainfield, IL and brother Ken Warrick of Indianapolis, IN and several nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Dotty Warrick, parents, brother Dave Warrick, sister-in-law Janet Fischer and son-in-law Dr. Chris Ballinger.

Tyrus Burgess - January 13, 1936 - March 03, 2024

Obituary Preview: Tyrus W. Burgess, 88, of Put-in-Bay, passed away Sunday, March 3, 2024, at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, Ohio. He was born January 13, 1936, in Detroit, the son of James R. and Eloise (Ruh) Burgess. He graduated from Berkley High School in the class of 1954. He served in the United States Navy from 1955 – 1961 advancing in engine programs when commanders discovered Ty’s aptitude for motors. Later stationed on the USS Washburn he and the engine crew were tasked with repairing two LCM engines for a war games exercise. Successfully completing the work overnight, the team earned the captain’s commendation. Ty kept in touch with several Navy friends, especially George “Toad” Thode.
Following discharge Ty was employed by Art Saunders constructing the golf course at Put-in-Bay. In 1967 he began construction work with Fran Morrow. Afterwards he worked for the National Park Service at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial, retiring in 1996. Ty was exceptionally organized and earned gratitude from the Park Service for safeguarding Perry’s Victory infrastructure during the Blizzard of ‘78. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Skip Duggan Antique Car Club, American Legion Posts 542 and 374, Lake Erie Islands Conservancy, Put-in-Bay Vol. Fire Department and a curatorial advisor for Lake Erie Islands Historical Society.
Ty grew up in Berkley, Mich. with his brother Jim, and close friends Bud Conshafter and Ray Skelton. Ty, Jim, Bud and Ray made many trips from Detroit to Put-in-Bay with Ty’s dad Ralph on his sailboat the Wreckless. Ty’s summers were spent with his beloved grandmother, Katie Ruh on Put-in-Bay and enjoyed a long friendship with neighbors John “Bullet” Borman and John Titchener. Ty’s Bass Islands ancestors immigrated from the Baden, Mecklenburg and Elsass regions of Germany between the 1850s and 1870s. Along with his brother Jim and cousins Susan, John and Roger, Ty was from their fifth generation. His many layers of Metz, Rehberg, Pfistner, Gross and Ruh ancestors are buried on the islands where they made their livings as vintners.

Ted worked for the Miller Ferry for 17 years and also owned and operated Ted’s Tackle on the island for 30 years.

John R. Crosser - October 30, 1937 - February 09, 2024

Obituary Preview: Former Ottawa County Sheriff, John R. Crosser passed away Friday, February 9, 2024 after a brief illness. John passed peacefully while being cared for at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, Ohio. He was born on October 30, 1937 near Arlington, Ohio, the son of John H. & Agnes J. (Shaw) Crosser.
A 1955 graduate of Arlington High School, he went on to graduate from Columbus Business University. He pursued his professional law enforcement education, graduating with the 1st class of the Ohio Peace Officers Training Council, then from the 35th session of the National Sheriff Institute and the 135th session of the FBI Academy. His passion lead to a lifelong pursuit of professional education.
John served in the Ohio National Guard in the Military Police from 1960-1966 and was honorably discharged earning the rank of E-6, Staff Sergeant. In 1958, he was appointed deputy sheriff in Hancock County, where he served until 1964. In 1966, he was appointed deputy sheriff in Ottawa County, serving until 1980. He was elected Ottawa County Sheriff in 1980, where he served three terms. During those years, the Sheriff ushered in a new era in the county’s mission to “Serve and Protect”. Notably, his insight during construction of the new forty-eight cell state-of-the-art detention facility improved security and working conditions. The facility opened in 1982 when he escorted the first inmate from the old jail to the new facility. Ottawa County was the second Ohio county to implement the e911 system. In cooperation with First Energy and the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station, the state of the art communications center was built and equipped on the third floor of the Detention Facility. During his tenure as Sheriff, his passion for the office he held vastly improved the safety and security of the citizens of Ottawa County.
John was a member and past president of the Colonial Club, and was a member of American Legion Post #113, the Port Clinton Yacht Club, and life member of Elks Lodge #1718. He was a dedicated life member of the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association, serving as president in 1989.
On June 1, 1968, John married Judith A. (Misch) Crosser of Port Clinton, and they enjoyed many years of family camping, travelling with friends, fishing, and escaping Ohio winters at their home in Englewood, Florida.
John is survived by his wife, Judy; sons, Michael D. (Donna Metcalfe) Crosser, Port Clinton, Robert J. (Brenna Hartley) Crosser, Wake Forest, North Carolina; 5 grandchildren, Michelle (Jake) Greener, Jennifer (Drew) Gatliff, Cheryl (Kyle) Kylmer, Abigail (Brian John) Finn, Reid Crosser, and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Judith K. (Crosser) Tesnow.
Friends may call from 3-7 PM Friday, March 8, 2024 at Neidecker, Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1124 Fulton St., Port Clinton. Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, March 9, 2024 at St. John Lutheran Church, 207 Adams St., Port Clinton. She loved flower gardening, rock collecting, watching and feeding birds, reading, and driving her 1929 Model A around the island, but most of all her three grandchildren were her pride and joy.
Her zest for life, smile, infectious laughter, and sense of humor will forever be remembered. Lynne always brought lively fun to any occasion. She will be dearly missed.

He was born December 1,1930 in Everett, Pennsylvania; a son of the late Elmer W. Burket and Marie (Karns) Burket. On August 19, 1952, in Cumberland, Maryland, he
married Dorothy Twigg. She preceded him in death on June 14, 2010. He is survived by a daughter Deborah Navin married to Philip, Woodland, Washington; grandson LTC Sean Navin married to Laura Donahue, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; sibling Ann Mayer, Highland Beach,
Florida and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son: Robert Burket, Jr. in August 1987,
and his sister Mary Lou Porcelli. Mr. Burket was a graduate of Everett Area High School, Class of 1949, where he played varsity football for three years. He served in the United States Marine Corps from 1950-1952. While fighting in the mountains of North Korea during the Korean war with Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, Fifth Regiment, he served as a sniper and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, he attended Stevens Trade School (now known as Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After completing his education as an electrician, he moved to the Cleveland, Ohio area to work at Republic Steel Corporation. He later became a civil service employee for the Nike Missile Defense System in the Lake Erie area,
eventually retiring from civil service at Ireland Army hospital, Ft.
Knox, Kentucky. He was an active member of American Legion Post 542 and the VFW while he lived in Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass Island, as well as a participant in the reunion group of his fellow Marine Corps E-2-5 Korean War veterans. He lived on Middle Bass Island full-time for many years and helped form the Middle Bass Island Yacht Club. He volunteered at the Middle Bass Island State Park marina when it first
opened and enjoyed meeting fellow boaters from all over the country. An avid fisherman, Mr. Burket liked to say he was able to fish full time for longer than he had worked, catching more than his share of
perch, bass, and walleye. Mr. Burket’s family expresses heartfelt gratitude to his team at the Sandusky VA Clinic for years of exceptional medical care. The family also thanks the home health care provided by the staff at Guiding Hands Home Health Services, and more recently, the physician and
nursing staff of Admiral’s Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation center.
