Vin and his two brothers and two sisters grew up in Lordship and attended local schools; he graduated from Bullard-Havens Technical High School, in 1966. About a year later, Vin enlisted in the US Navy on September 19, 1967. He received training as a medical assistant, and he eventually reached the rank of Hospital Corpsman, third class (HM3). For the majority of his active duty, he proudly served on the USS Seattle. He was honorably discharged on September 17, 1971. Notably, during a tour on the Mediterranean Sea, Vin was honored with a Letter of Commendation for helping save the life of a gravely wounded Greek citizen, who had been injured in a severe accident at sea.
While serving in the Navy, Vin married the love of his life, Pat, on September 20, 1969. After returning home, Vin continued his medical training and worked at the VA Hospital in West Haven, CT, and eventually would become an RN, when he graduated from the University of Bridgeport in 1981. During that time, the family grew with the additions of sons Vincent, Jr. in 1973, and Michael, in 1979.
Vin spent most of his nursing career at Norwalk Hospital as an operating room RN, where he worked from June 1981, until he retired in December 2016. During his career, Vin was among the first nurses to be trained and to use the DaVinci Robotic Surgical System, an innovation in surgery first introduced in 2000. For over two decades, Vin worked an additional full-time job as a private duty nurse for an elderly man who was not only a patient, but became a dear friend, until his passing in 2001. Elizabeth K Daley - May 06, 1928 - March 01, 2024

Departed: 03/01/2024 (Stratford)
Obituary Preview: Eizabeth K. “Betty” Daley, 95, of Stratford left this life peacefully at The Connecticut Hospice in Branford on March 1, 2024. The youngest of six children, Betty was born on May 6, 1928 on the east side of Bridgeport to parents who emigrated from Slovakia to start a new life in the United States. Like her parents, Betty was a lifetime parishioner of Saints Cyril and Methodius Church in Bridgeport.
A proud 1945 graduate of Warren Harding High School, Betty worked for the City of Bridgeport for 46 years, starting her career in the Education Department and retiring as the long-serving Administrative Assistant to the City Engineer. City Hall employees relied on her as an extremely competent, conscientious and well-liked personality in the workplace.
Devotion to family was a driving component of Betty’s character. For example, Betty was the primary source of constant care for her parents in their aging years. The light of her life was her only child, Linda, whom Betty helped cope with Type-1 juvenile diabetes. Betty worked two jobs to ensure Linda received the education she deserved; Linda responded by achieving academic and professional success as a Ph.D in molecular biology. After Linda predeceased her at the age of 59 in 2008, Betty’s resilience allowed her to continue her loving attention to members of her immediate family, including her grandchildren, Elizabeth Dill and George Kosturko, her great-grandson, Elliot Dill, and her great-granddaughter, Claire Kosturko. Her devotion did not stop there, however, as she put great time and effort into nurturing relationships with many other loved ones, especially her nieces, nephews and their families. Particular foci of her generosity were her grandniece, Sarah Miller, and her great-grandnephew, Luke Botillo.
Loyalty to her friends also mattered greatly to Betty, whether close by, in another state or in another country. If she couldn’t see a friend in person, she stayed close the old-fashioned way, by calling on the telephone or sending long, handwritten letters. When she could see them, she’d be likely to bring along delicious, home-baked treats. She found joy traveling with friends to places like Slovakia, Cape Cod’s beaches and the racetrack at Saratoga; joining them to shop at Kohl’s or for a movie and dinner afterwards at Frankie’s Diner pleased her just as much.
Betty’s concern for her community never left her. For many years, she took great pleasure reading aloud to children at Hall School in Bridgeport as a dedicated member of the Read Aloud Program, ensuring her popularity with the students by providing treats following the reading sessions. She regularly participated in planning her Harding High class reunion celebrations. And, until the last weeks of her life, Betty worked with the Linus Quilters Program, a group who made quilts for children campers at Paul Newman’s Hole-in-the-Wall Camp in Ashford and for patients at the Connecticut Hospice.
Betty is predeceased by her parents, Vincent and Helen Maco Kasinak, her brothers Andrew, Paul and Cyril Kasinak, her sisters Margaret Smetana and Johanna Wasel, and her daughter, Linda D. Kosturko, Ph.D. She is survived by her son-in-law, William Kosturko, her grandchildren Elizabeth Dill and George Kosturko, and her great-grandchildren, Elliot Dill and Claire Kosturko. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families, all of whom had a special place in her heart.
Friends are invited to attend the funeral on Friday, March 8, 2024 at 9:30 a.m. at Pistey Funeral Home, 2155 Main Street, Stratford and at 10:30 a.m. at Saints Cyril and Methodius Church, 79 Church Street, Bridgeport. Interment at St. Michael Cemetery. There will be no calling hours.

Michael W Pickering - February 22, 2024 - February 22, 2024

Departed: 02/22/2024 (Stratford)
Obituary Preview: Michael Wayne Pickering, known to all as "Mike," brought an abundance of laughter and warmth to the world during his 59 years of life. He graced us with his presence on October 22, 1964, in Milford, Connecticut, and after living a life full of joy, Mike made his unexpected curtain call on February 22, 2024, in Shelton, Connecticut.
Mike was the kind of guy who could find humor in the plumbing of life—quite literally. After graduating with honors from Trumbull High School in 1982, he went on to become a Master Plumber, a title he wore with pride. He wasn't just any plumber; he was the plumber you'd call not just for a leak, but for a dose of wit while your pipes got fixed. His business, MPSPHC, wasn't just a company for plumbing and heating; it was a hub of chuckles and good spirits, much like its owner.
You could say he hit the jackpot—three of a kind! The birth of his triplets, Alexis , Ashley, and Zachary, was undoubtedly the premier highlight of Mike's life. Along with his bonus child, Mark Acevedo, spouse of Alexis. Mike often joked that the only thing tougher than a clogged drain was raising three kids simultaneously, but he did it with the same skill and dedication he put into his work.
Family was the cornerstone of Mike's world. He was the beloved son of Martha and Carl Coppola Jr., and a brother who could always be counted on for a light-hearted quip or a supportive shoulder. Charlee and James Pickering, Laura Fellows, Carl Coppola III, and David Coppola shared many fond memories with him. Though his sister Holly Flannery had preceded him, her memory brought smiles to his face whenever he reminisced about their shared shenanigans. Mike was also a treasured part of Lisa Ahern's life as they co-parented their incredible children.
Mike's interests were as varied as the items in his collections—each with its own backstory that he'd recount with a twinkle in his eye. He was a maestro of melodies, an animal lover, a history buff who could rival any professor, and a sports aficionado. Whether he was swinging on the golf green, cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles, or rooting for the New York Yankees, Mike did it with a passion that was infectious. And if you ever had the pleasure of chatting with him, you'd know that Mike could tell stories that would make even the most stoic of us crack a smile.
Loving, intelligent, and selfless—these words paint a portrait of Mike, but they hardly capture the full spectrum of his character. He was the kind of person who would offer you the shirt off his back or the last wrench from his toolbox, always with a joke to ensure you parted ways laughing.
Mike's legacy is not just in the pipes he fixed or the business he built, but in the laughter he left echoing in the hearts of those who knew him. He had a knack for making the ordinary extraordinary, finding humor in life's little ironies, and reminding us all not to take ourselves too seriously. As we bid farewell to Mike, let's not say he's "gone," but rather that he's taken his show on the road to a celestial stage where the laughter is eternal and the plumbing is divine. And while we may not hear his laughter or his playful banter down here, look to the stars on a clear night, and you just might find one twinkling a little brighter, winking at you, as if to say, "Keep smiling, the joke's on life."
