Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for loved ones, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also help inform others of the passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family members or close relatives of the deceased write the obituary. However, it can also be written by a funeral home, a friend, or even the deceased themselves before their passing.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary usually includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, and surviving family members. It may also include details about their life achievements, military service, or charitable work.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication and personal preference. Typically, it ranges from a few sentences to several paragraphs. A good rule of thumb is to aim for 150-250 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and guidelines. You can usually find this information on their website or by calling their office.

Can I publish an obituary online?

What is the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing someone's death, while a eulogy is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service to celebrate the person's life.

Can I write my own obituary?

How do I find an old obituary?

You can try searching online archives of newspapers, genealogy websites, or local libraries. You may also contact the funeral home that handled the arrangements for assistance.

Can I reuse an existing obituary template?
