Ludmila Andre - May 10, 1940 - May 06, 2024

Departed: 05/06/2024 (Rahway)
Obituary Preview: Ludmila Andre, 83, born in Kiev, Ukraine, lovingly left this earth on Monday, May 6, 2024, four days before her 84th Birthday.
Mila's life was as big as any of the stories she covered in her 40+ years as editor, columnist and writer for the New York Daily News. Her family's journey to America began during war torn and treacherous times in Europe with stories of death defying train rides, miraculous survivals, and the power of faith.
Mila and her family departed on a train from Kiev, through Western Ukraine, Poland, Austria and Hungary to Germany in May of 1943. War was raging throughout Eastern Europe and beyond. It would be 7 long years of continual migration filled with unspeakable challenges- concentration camps, illness, bombings, kidnappings and hunger to finally reach New York in 1950 when Mila was 10 years old.
Mila worked hard from an early age. She supported her family to put her two sisters through school, sacrificing a formal education for herself to ensure a better life for her whole family. She had a deep appreciation and vast knowledge of books and art, filling her home and surrounding herself with both, always reading, learning and growing.
Fluent in Russian, English, German and conversational in many more, there were few she could not befriend. Mila's talent for joke telling was legendary and indeed there was never one she forgot and would have had no trouble moonlighting as a comedian.
Mila was generous, so generous, always helping those around her in any way she could. She had a photographic memory and could recollect dates and history with remarkable clarity.
To be loved by Mila was to be loved fiercely, with abandon and without condition. Her heart was enormous as was her laugh. It was impossible not to enjoy life in her presence. She understood clearly the preciousness of each moment and never ended a conversation without saying, "I love you".
Mila loved to travel, visit museums, socialize and spend time with her family. She is predeceased by her precious son, Eugene Andre (2018) and adored husband, Rurik Dudin (1995). Surviving is her treasured sister, Galina and her cherished son, Gregory Andre, her beloved nieces, Alexandra, Katrina and Laila, her adored granddaughters, Tatiana Yunker (Robert), Larisa Kupka (Andy) and Natasha Lisojo (Zack). She is also loved by 5 great-grandchildren, Layla Kupka, Olivia Kupka, Brayden Kupda, Abigail Yunker and Dylan Yunker. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
Visitation will be Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Pettit-Davis Funeral Home, 371 West Milton Avenue, Rahway, N.J. 07065.
Services will be held Friday, May 10, 2024 at 1:00 pm in the Chapel of Novo Diveevo Russian Orthodox Church, 100 Smith Street, Nanuet, NY 10954. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Carol and Jerry married in 1965 and together raised their three children, Lori, Terry, and Joe. When their children were growing up, Jerry served as the president of Merrill Park Baseball League and as a Girl Scout Leader.
Jerry worked as a lab technician at Sun Chemicals in Linden for 37 years. He was also an active parishioner of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church / Church of the Good Shepherd in Rahway, New Jersey. He loved Christmas time when the family gathers to celebrate. You could find him in his reclining chair wearing a festive shirt, watching a Hallmark Christmas movie, and listening to Christmas CDs. He would have to start listening right after Thanksgiving to get through the 153 Christmas CDs in his collection.
Jerry was an avid fan of the New York sports teams, the Jets, the Mets, and the Rangers. His collection of memorabilia lines the walls and shelves of his home. Although he was a lifelong fan of these teams, his true sports loyalties lie within his grandchildren. Poppy enjoyed watching and attending softball, baseball, soccer, and basketball games. He was the most spirited fan in the stands at dance recitals, cheerleading competitions, and football games watching the cheerleaders on the sidelines. After every event, you could expect an honest recap from Poppy, and he was sure to keep up with the stats for the season. Poppy will always be his grandchildren’s Number One fan.
Jerry taught us many life lessons we will always hold close to our hearts: through the highs and lows of life, always keep swinging, never strike out looking… and it’s never too cold for ice cream.
Loving husband of 59 years to Carolyn.
Beloved father of Lori (Gerard) Robson, Terry (John) Paulikas, and Joseph (Nicole) Thorn.
Proud Poppy of Caitlyn (Andrew), Lauren, Jill, Brittany, Ashley, Courtney, Connor, and Tyler.
Loving brother of Joan Snyder, long time friend of Adolph and his deceased wife Isabel Oskutis, devoted uncle to many nieces and nephews, and a great friend to many.
Jerry was predeceased by his parents Elsie and Philip Thorn and family members Jimmy and Ina Thorn, LaVerne and Marty Bellet, and Dutch Snyder.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2024 from 2:00pm to 6:00pm at the Pettit-Davis Funeral Home (371 West Milton Avenue, Rahway, NJ 07065). On Monday, March 25, 2024 we will meet at Pettit-Davis Funeral Home at 10:00am, followed by burial at Graceland Memorial Park (1900 Galloping Hill Rd, Kenilworth, NJ 07033).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It serves as a way to share the news of a loved one's passing with family, friends, and community.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries play a significant role in honoring the life of the deceased, providing closure for those who are grieving, and serving as a historical record of the person's life. They also help to notify others of the passing and provide details about funeral services or memorial events.

Who typically writes an obituary?

The task of writing an obituary usually falls to the family members or close friends of the deceased. In some cases, a funeral home or mortuary may assist with writing the obituary or provide a template to guide the process.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also include a brief biography, hobbies, interests, or achievements.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a short paragraph.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some print publications allow you to include one or more photos of the deceased. This can help to personalize the tribute and make it more meaningful.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only the basic facts such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. Check their website or contact their customer service department for specific guidelines and deadlines.

Are there any costs associated with publishing an obituary?

Yes, some newspapers and online platforms charge a fee for publishing an obituary. The cost can vary widely depending on the length of the obituary, number of publications, and other factors.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary as part of their end-of-life planning. This can ensure that their story is told in their own words and provide comfort to their loved ones during a difficult time.

What if I want to keep the obituary private?

If you prefer not to publicly announce the death, you can opt for a private or limited-circulation obituary. Some online platforms offer password-protected or invitation-only access to obituaries.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline varies depending on the platform or newspaper. Online obituaries are often published within hours or days of submission, while print publications may have longer lead times.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, corrections or updates can be made to an online obituary. However, printed publications typically do not allow changes once they have gone to press.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary, consider seeking assistance from a funeral home, hospice organization, or professional writer who specializes in obituaries.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial information in an obituary?

Yes, many families choose to include information about memorial donations or charitable contributions in lieu of flowers. This can be a meaningful way to honor the deceased and support a worthy cause.

How do I find an old obituary from years ago?

You can try searching online archives, visiting local libraries or genealogical societies, or contacting the newspaper where the obituary was originally published.

Can I republish an existing obituary on social media or my personal website?

Check with the original publisher or copyright holder to ensure you have permission to republish the obituary. You may need to obtain written consent or provide proper attribution.

What if I want to create a digital legacy beyond an obituary?

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

Yes, writing an obituary for someone who died unexpectedly or at a young age requires sensitivity and compassion. Focus on celebrating their life and accomplishments, rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their passing.

Can I include humor or personality traits in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous anecdotes or quirky characteristics can help bring comfort and smiles to those who are grieving.

How do I handle sensitive information in an obituary?

If you're unsure about sharing certain details about the deceased's life or circumstances surrounding their passing, consider consulting with family members or close friends before publishing the obituary.

What if I need additional support or resources during this difficult time?

DON'T hesitate to reach out to professionals such as grief counselors, funeral directors, or support groups for guidance and comfort. They can provide valuable resources and emotional support during this challenging time.
