Joan Ray - January 07, 1930 - September 19, 2022

Departed: 09/19/2022 (Murphysboro)
Obituary Preview: Joan Ray passed away September 19th, 2022 in Fort Worth, Texas.
Joan (Ballard) Ray was born on a snowy January day to Everett (Duck) and Helen Ballard. She grew up in Mt Carbon like most did in the 1930s - walking through the rain and snow miles upon miles to school and doing chores around the house when not at school (a role assigned to her by the Great Depression). In 1947, she went on to marry the love of her life Harry Ray on Christmas Day. They had four children David, Steve, Cheryl, and Thomas Ray. They lived in an amazing house on Westwood Lane. Harry and Joan were known for their 4th of July parties, beautiful landscaping (including flowers galore and produce gardens), and their own big foot sighting in their yard (Looking at you, Big Muddy Monster)!
Joan treasured being a stay-at-home mom for her four active kids and later, caring her 6 grandkids over many summers. Joan looked forward to her summers with her grandkids: visiting the St Louis arch, slip n slides, paying them to pick up gum balls in the yard (back when child labor was legal), making brownies, and introducing them to her favorite soap opera (As the World Turns). Her great sense of style, elegant poise, and kindhearted spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her husband: Harry Ray, sons: David Ray & Thomas Ray, and her sister: Betty Haury. She is survived by her children: Steve (Patricia) Ray & Cheryl (David) Rath. Her grandchildren: Jennifer (Matthew) Brauen, Ashley (Alex) Semerenko, Eric Rath, Brian (Mallory) Ray, Kaitlyn (Chris) Hansen & Jeffrey (Candace) Anyan. And her great-grandchildren: Tyler, Cooper, Vivian, Addison, Tinley, Cora, Andy and Emery. Her siblings Bob Ballard & Mary Lou Poulter and nieces and nephew: Debbie Snyder, Cindy Poulter, Kris McCaskill, Patrick Ballard and Jennifer Fieldhack.
Since most of her friends have beat her to the pearly gates, there will only be a graveside service. It will be held on October 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

Albert Ray Miller - April 05, 1952 - August 05, 2022

Departed: 08/05/2022 (Murphysboro)
Obituary Preview: Albert Miller, 70, formerly of Murphysboro, was taken to his heavenly home on Friday, August 5th, 2022, to join his mama, daddy, and much of his family. He was born April 5', 1952, to Albert Julius and Ida Mae Miller. His mother loved himunconditionally but died at the young age of 55 in 1970 when Albert was only 18. His father, Albert Julius Miller, cared for him single-handedly for 31 years until his death in 2001.Albert used to love to go fishing with his dad. Albert would be saying, "Now daddy, now?" anxious to set the hook. Since his father's passing in 2001, Albert has been in the loving care of his sister and brother-in-law, Gloria and Terry Dokken and has resided with them in Carterville.Albert loved everyone and it seemed like everyone knew & loved him. Often, we would be at anevent, a store, or restaurant (even out-of-state) and someone would call out, "Hi Albert Ray"…it would be his meter-reader, mail carrier, or worker from a previous workshop from years ago. They would come up & talk to him - always glad to see him.Since covid, his activities had been more limited, and he spent many hours watching TV Land (Andy Griffin, Bonanza, & Gunsmoke) and the St Louis Cardinals. One of the things he liked best about traveling was shopping for souvenirs to get t-shirts or caps to show where he had been & postcards to send back home. He enjoyed going to Florida in the winter but was always happy to come back to his workshop and church. He loved his workshop at Centerstone in West Frankfort. He always wanted to go out early to wait for the bus. One activity that he thoroughly enjoyed there was Special Olympics - he had a display case on his wall with dozens of ribbons and medals which he liked to show to visitors.Albert thrived in the love, acceptance, and attention he got at his church and was always eager to go. He knew everyone who acknowledged him. He knew who called him by name, who shook his hand, who patted him on the shoulder, who hugged him, and who sent him get well cards when he was sick. Now, as we are heartbroken at his leaving, heaven is rejoicing at his arrival.Preceding him in death were his brother and sister-in-law, Harry (Betty) Allard, and a special cousin (his life-long best friend) Darrell Verbal. He is survived by two sisters: Dorothy (Bill) Imhoff of The Villages in Florida and Gloria (Terry) Dokken of Carterville, Illinois and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.A visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday August 15, 2022, at the First Baptist Church in Carterville, Illinois with funeral services following at 11 a.m. and interment at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park in Murphysboro, Illinois. The family requests that any memorials go to his church home: Carterville First Baptist Church. For more information, please visit pettettfuneralhome.com

Logan Reed Norton - July 01, 1997 - June 08, 2022

Departed: 06/08/2022 (Murphysboro)
Obituary Preview: Logan Reed Norton, 24, of Maple Park, IL left us to continue his audio career with God on June 8, 2022. We can’t think of a better apprenticeship. As talented as he was as an audio engineer, sound recordist and writer, his father constantly told him there was always more to learn and we understand there are beautiful sounds to be heard in Heaven. Logan was born on July 1st 1997 to John and Karen (Worcester) Norton and he always brought much happiness to all of his family and friends. He was caring, conscientious and quick witted which made him a joy to be around. He loved movies, video games and music. His favorite band was Coheed and Cambria and he could tell you everything about them. Seriously, everything. He graduated from the Illinois Media School in Lombard IL. where he studied radio and television broadcasting. However, he soon found himself gravitating toward the audio field and became a sound recording engineer for feature films working alongside his father. He also provided post audio work for many projects and his work was always exceptional. He was also a very talented writer having written many things including one long form comedic audioplay, and co-writing two feature films with his father. All of these projects will be going into production to continue his legacy. Logan loved being online with his many friends and playing video games deep into the night. He would often wake his parents with loud, shall we say, inappropriate language. When this was brought to his attention his favorite reply was always, “Profanity is the seasoning of sentences!” Who could argue with that? Logan is survived by his mother, Karen (Worcester) Norton, father, John Wesley Norton Jr., three siblings, John Wesley Norton III and his wife Rachel (Brady) Norton, Tana (Rosenberger) Lombardo and her husband Anthony Lombardo, and John Rosenberger and his wife Lori (Alford) Rosenberger. His grandparents were grandmother Donna (Reed) Norton, grandmother Shirly (McCole) Worcester and grandfather Stuart Worcester. There are many, many cousins that he had strong bonds with including Derek Golliher and his wife Kacie (Hill) Golliher, Alexia Jones, Evan Golliher and his fiance Castiel Gattis, Cooper Norton and Annie Williams, Wesley Kari and Amber Kari. His aunts and uncles included Cheryl (Norton) Golliher, Lori Norton, and Cindy (Worcester) Kari. His nieces and nephews are Zachary Lombado, Emma Lombardo, Keagan Jones, Kelton Jones and Estella Golliher, He was preceded in death by his grandfather John Wesley Norton, Sr. who is joyously showing him around the afterlife as we speak. Logan was a very caring person, especially when it came to his mother whom he took very good care of and forged a special relationship with that not even his passing shall diminish. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday June 14, 2022 at Pettett Funeral Home with funeral services following at 12 p.m.. and interment at Walker Hill Cemetery in Grand Tower, Illinois. For more information, please visit pettettfuneralhome, com
