Arvydas Joseph Kiela - September 02, 1944 - May 18, 2024

Departed: 05/18/2024 (Lemont)
Obituary Preview: Arvydas Joseph Kiela passed away on May 18th, 2024 in the University of Chicago Medical Center, surrounded by family.
Arvydas (lovingly referred to as Al), was born on August 31st, 1944 to Emilja and Marius Kiela in Panevėžys, Lithuania. Immigrating to the U.S. in 1959, Al went to attend St. Rita High School and earned his Associate’s Degree at the Chicago Teachers College. Drafted in 1966, he served dutifully in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, driving cargo trucks throughout Europe. He then returned home to start his own roofing business in Chicago, Illinois.
Al’s love of adventure in cars, motorcycles and skiing led to him meeting his wife Vilia on a group ski trip to Aspen, Colorado, where he wooed her with his stellar moves and dashing mullet. They married in August 1987. The decades that followed led to a mutual love of sailing and traveling the world, both as a couple and as a family with their two daughters Andrea and Daina. From road trips across the country to island hopping on chartered sailboats, Al gathered a treasure trove of unforgettable memories and inside jokes that span four continents.
In homage to his homeland, Al donated his time, construction skills and energy to the local Lithuanian community. He was a committed supporter of the Lithuanian Scouts Association, helping rebuild the beach at Camp Rakas, tending to camp buildings, and raising money for the organization.
But for all his adventures, Al took pleasure in the simple joys of life. Tending to his beloved yard and vegetable garden, reading mystery thrillers, telling stories around the bonfire, driving in his treasured Camaro, cooking his mother’s award-winning kugelis, fishing with friends, laughing with his family. Though at times a sore sport, he will be even more sorely missed. Al’s infectious smile, razor sharp wit and indomitable strength will live on through all who knew and loved him.
Al is preceded by his parents Emilia and Marius Kiela and his sister Audrone. He is survived by his loving wife Vilia Sutkus-Kiela, daughters Andrea and Daina, brother Albert Kiela, sister Ausra Kiela, and nephews Alex Kiela, Aaron Kiela and Adam Koob.
Visitation will take place Wednesday May 22nd at Petkus Funeral Home in Lemont from 3:00pm - 8:00pm. Mass will be held Thursday May 23rd at 10:00am at Blessed J. Matulaitis Mission in the Lithuanian World Center in Lemont, followed by funeral services at St. Casimir Catholic Cemetery.

Elena Nijole Jasinevicius (nee Kronas), 89, passed away peacefully at her home in Darien, Illinois on March 29, 2024.
Born to Konstancija and Robertas Kronas on May 3, 1934 in Kaunas, Lithuania, Elena spent her early years with her brothers, Liudas, Balys, Eduardas, and Romas, and sister Stefanija, helping out on the family’s land, where their parents ran a thriving floral business. World War II uprooted them, and she spent her early teenage years in a German refugee camp before emigrating to Chicago in 1949.
She met her late husband of 56 years, Vytautas Jasinevicius, through Chicago’s South Side Lithuanian immigrant community, where they settled and raised their family. Their close group of friends and family loved to sing, dance, play cards and tell stories late into the night. Elena had a long career at Sears Roebuck & Co., delighting her grandchildren with trips to her office on the 75th floor of the Sears Tower.
After moving to Darien, IL in 1986, Elena was an anchor to her growing family, hosting holidays and passing down cherished Lithuanian recipes and traditions. She was active in the Lithuanian World Center in Lemont, and in retirement, enjoyed travel and staying in touch with family and friends around the world. Her beloved pups, Murza and Winston, were never far from her side - especially if she’d recently cooked a favorite meal of Lithuanian sausage and Kugelis.
Elena is survived by her daughter, Sylvia (John) McIvor, sons Vytautas (Rubia) and Paulius (Kirstie) Jasinevicius, grandchildren Alaina, Richard, Renata, William, Tara, and Matthew, and five great-granddaughters.

Čekius rašyti ,,Baltic Jesuit Advancement Project.” Mylinti šeima Dr. Mindaugas Charles Vygantas, beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, physician, philanthropist
and friend, joined his wife Auste in Heaven on March 18, 2024. As a cornerstone of his family and a trailblazer in the Lithuanian and medical communities, Mindaugas touched the lives of countless people during his 86 years of life. Mindaugas was born on October 14th, 1937, in Taurage, Lithuania. His family was forced to flee Lithuania due to advancing Soviet aggression during World War II. He immigrated to Little Shoot, Wisconsin in 1949 with his parents, Herta and Kazimieras, and his older brother Vytautas. Soon after, the family moved to Chicago where Mindaugas attended Saint Ignatius College Prep, Loyola University and the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine, where he graduated as a Doctor of Medicine in 1963. He attended Harvard Medical School for a
Basic Science Course in Ophthalmology 1964-1965. He completed his Residency in Ophthalmology at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1967 and a Fellowship in Retinal Detachment Surgery at St. Joseph Hospital 1967-1968. Medicine was the passion of his life. Dr. Vygantas was a pioneer in the field of ophthalmology, contributing to advancements in the surgical treatment of vitreo-retinal conditions, including macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and others. Dr. Vygantas founded Retinal Consultants, Ltd., that has served Chicago and its suburbs for more than 35 years. Throughout his career, he completed many international service trips to places like Lithuania and Nigeria where he provided instruction to clinicians, as well as ophthalmic care to those in need. By the time he retired in 2017, Dr. Vygantas had become an invaluable resource, mentor and provider to numerous colleagues
and patients during his long and distinguished career. His passion also translated into his love for family – he married Auste Paliokas in 1969 and together they raised four children over the course of a 52-year-long marriage. Mindaugas and his wife had dedicated their lives to Lithuanian causes. They instilled in their children a deep connection and awe of their Lithuanian lineage and history, the importance of preserving their culture and the significance of keeping alive their Lithuanian
heritage. Mindaugas had a deep faith and was a devout Catholic. Thanks to Mindaugas’ perseverance and spirit despite various health challenges in his last decade
of life, his family reveled in the gift of time and never took a shared moment for granted. Mindaugas is survived by his four children, Vaiva (Tomas) Marchertas, Gytis (Jessica), Marius and
Rytas (Laura) and his seven grandchildren, Laima, Andrius, Timas, Stella, Hendriks, Gabija, and Aras. His kindness, tenacious spirit and clever wit lives on in them and he will be missed dearly by all those who knew and loved him.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They can help to notify people of the person's passing, share details about their life and accomplishments, and provide information about funeral services or memorial events.

What information is typically included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral services, memorial donations, or other ways to pay tribute to the deceased.

Who writes an obituary?

Obituaries are usually written by family members or close friends of the deceased, although funeral homes or obituary writers may also assist with writing and publishing the notice.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or website it will be published on. Typically, obituaries range from 100 to 500 words, but some may be longer or shorter depending on the individual's life and accomplishments.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and accomplishments.
