Charles J. "Chuck-Charlie" Meyer - August 05, 1933 - August 29, 2022

Departed: 08/29/2022 (Pittsburgh)
Obituary Preview: Age 89, of Indiana Twp., on Monday, August 29, 2022, Mr. Meyer was the beloved husband of the late Elsa Hahn Meyer; father of Cynthia McShane (Joseph), David Meyer (Sandy), Timothy Meyer (Vicky); son of the late Charles and Eleanor Meyer; brother of James, Carol, Lorraine and the late Eileen; grandfather of Brianna, Aaron McShane, Virginia Hunter (Ian), Elizabeth, Adam, Emery, Stephanie Meyer.
Charlie was the eldest child of Charles and Eleanor Meyer. Born August 5, 1933 in Pittsburgh and raised in Millvale with his four siblings. He was a High School graduate of North Catholic and was drafted into the Army on June 11, 1953 as Pvt-1. He was Honorably discharged with the rank of Cpl. From Ft. Benning, Georgia May 12, 1955. He received a National Defense medal and a Good Conduct medal.
Soon after discharge, he met his wife of 64 years Elsa (passed October 2021), an immigrant from Germany, at their place of employment; The H.J. Heinz Co. Charlie and Elsa purchased their first home in Millvale in the late 50’s and then shortly after moved to Dorseyville in 1966. They raised their three children there. The neighborhood was, and still is, a close-knit community, even though many of the original residents have moved or passed on.
His parents came from very large families consisting of 14 & 16 children respectively. Having this many aunts/uncles and cousins, there was always some type of activity and fun at the “farm” including: pick up baseball games and 4th of July picnics. The farm was in Shaler, but has since been consumed by homes as it was sold off by his uncles several years ago. As a child and young man, it was one of his favorite places to be. Even with all the hard work associated with picking crops or baling hay, I was told there was always laughter and fun and a cold drink after. Another favorite place was at a camp nestled along the Allegheny River between the towns of Tidioute and Tionesta. The camp was purchased together with his childhood friend, Jim Zeidler. Both families consisting of a total of 7 children, enjoyed the camp for decades. After the children grew and went their own direction, Charlie and Jim, in their retired years, shared almost every summer weekend together. There they enjoyed the rural mountains, and could be often seen fishing together for small-mouthed bass in their hand-built canoe or enjoying a cold beer and hotdog by the campfire. These wonderful times continued together well into their 80’s. The camp still nicely resides in the family with it being sold to one of Jim’s sons a few years ago.
Charlie was a religious man and devout Catholic, never missing a Sunday Mass. He was a dedicated 40-year union employee of Equitable Gas (now EQT). He was also a longtime Fireman of Dorseyville Volunteer Fire Department; which was conveniently located just across the street. He enjoyed hunting and fishing up until late in his life. One of his most memorable and enjoyable times was a pheasant hunt with his two sons in Iowa.
Charlie was known for having a good voice an loved to sing many songs of his era. Even the wonderful staff of Concordia (Cabot), where he lived this past year, always remarked how beautiful his voice and his ability to carry a tune. His time was relativity short at Concordia, but in that time he made many friends with the nurses, aids, social workers and staff. Many of whom came to visit him in his final days even when they were off duty. Charlies loved his family and will be missed by many, but none more than his three children: We find solace in our faith that he is at peace and is with The Lord in Heaven along with many of his friends and family.
Celebrate Mr. Meyer’s life with his family at a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday at Noon at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Glenshaw. Arrangements made by PERMAN FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATION SERVICES, INC., Shaler Twp.
