Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and remember the deceased, while also providing essential information to those who need to know about the passing. They can also help facilitate communication among family and friends, and provide a sense of closure during a difficult time.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, the family of the deceased or a close friend will write the obituary. Funeral homes may also offer assistance with writing and publishing the obituary. In some cases, a professional obituary writer may be hired to craft the notice.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A standard obituary typically includes the person's name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include details about the funeral service, memorial donations, or other relevant information.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Typically, it ranges from 100 to 500 words. Online obituary platforms often have more flexibility in terms of word count than traditional newspapers.

Can I include photos or other media in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some newspapers allow you to include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements in the obituary. This can help make the tribute more personal and engaging.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the necessary information and payment for publication.

Can I publish an obituary online?

Yes! Online obituary platforms like Legacy.com, Tributes.com, or Memoriams.com allow you to create and publish an obituary on their websites. You can also share the link on social media or via email.

Is there a cost associated with publishing an obituary?

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The publication timeline can vary depending on the newspaper's schedule and deadlines. Online obituaries are usually published immediately after submission. Check with the publication or platform for specific guidelines.

Can I make changes to an already-published obituary?

In most cases, corrections or updates can be made to an online obituary. For print newspapers, changes may be more difficult due to printing schedules. Contact the publication or platform directly to inquire about their revision policies.

What is a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of someone's passing, usually including only basic information such as name, age, and date of death. It's often used when a full obituary is not desired or feasible.

What is the difference between a death notice and an obituary?

A death notice is a concise announcement of someone's passing, while an obituary provides more detailed information about the person's life and legacy.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes! Some people choose to write their own obituary as a way to control how they're remembered and ensure accuracy. This can also be a therapeutic exercise in reflecting on one's life.

How do I find old obituaries?

You can search online archives of newspapers or visit local libraries that maintain historical records. Many online genealogy resources and databases also offer access to archived obituaries.

Can I republish an old obituary?
