Donna Lynn Smith - December 11, 1956 - February 18, 2024

Departed: 02/18/2024 (Spokane )
Obituary Preview: Donna Lynn Smith (Robison) (12/11/1956 - 02/18/2024)
Donna Lynn Smith (Robison) was born on December 11th, 1956, in Spokane Washington, to Geraldine Louise Robison, and Charles Dean Robison. She was followed by her two brothers, Jim in 1958, and her youngest brother Ed in 1960. Donna was always a bit of a tomboy. All through her life, she made many friends through her love of the outdoors. In Elementary school, she met the first of her many lifelong friends, Lia Marrazzo, joining the girl scouts with her. Later, in Middle School, she met another lifelong friend Carla Carnegie. They hit it off immediately and played tennis, ran, played music, and sang together through high school. Donna even sang at Carla’s wedding on the Saturday before they graduated from West Valley High School!
Late in high school and into her early college years, Donna joined Explorer Search and Rescue (ESAR), where she made many more friends who she remained in contact with. She also met her husband Mike while playing capture the flag during an ESAR activity. Sometime later, her and Mike attended an ESAR potluck together and brought Earthworm Stew as their contribution to the potluck. It was exactly what it sounds like.
Donna attended Spokane Falls Community College on a volleyball scholarship over the course of several years. Her class schedule reflected her continued interest in art, physical activities, math, and the outdoors. In 1981, Donna and Mike were married in a small ceremony held in the Smith front yard in Clayton, WA. Later that year, the newlyweds moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where they attended Colorado State University. Donna graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology, and some even say that she liked carbon before it was "coal".
They moved back to Washington and eventually had their first child David (Dave), in 1988, followed by their daughter Melissa, in 1993. Donna took on the Herculean task of raising the two children that she would later, jokingly refer to as, her "mental problems, man". She also took charge of the home and farm, whilst homeschooling both “kids," and still managed to get the two into a ridiculous amount of educational and extracurricular activities, all while her husband worked out of town during the week. During this time, she made many, many friends, through the kids’ Home-Link program, church, her hobbies, and the kids’ sports teams. She met her best friend, Laurie Griffen, in 1997 through the basketball team that Dave and Laurie’s son, Derek, played on. Donna and Laurie remained steadfast friends through husbands and ex-husbands, growing children, and cross-country moves. She also made many other dear friends during this time of her life.
In 2006, Donna decided to go back to work again. She worked a brief stint at the famous Clayton Drive-In, before finding a lasting career at the Clayton Post Office. Through this job she reconnected with several old friends, Sandy Hurn and Kim Crahen, as well as made new ones in her community. She loved attending the Clayton Community Church, where she played piano with the choir. She loved being a part of things, and getting to know and love so many people in her town.
In 2017, Donna moved back into her childhood home with her mother and brother Ed after her divorce. She continued working at the Clayton Post Office, and attended church faithfully, becoming a part of many church groups. When she was initially diagnosed with breast cancer, being home gave her support to fight and win her first battle with cancer. Donna was later able to care for her mother as she fought her own battle with breast cancer.
In December 2022, Donna received the news that her cancer had returned. Unlike most people receiving such news, Donna continued to plan for her future, and care for and consider the people around her, even waiting to retire until she felt like her absence would be less of a burden for the coworkers that she loved. In April 2023, Donna finally retired from the post office. She spent her final months in remarkably high spirits. She leaned much on her faith and her friends in her church. She went on several trips with friends, and her daughter. She continued to donate to causes that she believed in and to take care of herself, while still enjoying her favorite blended mochas whenever possible. In her final weeks, she was swarmed with friends and loved ones visiting her in the hospital. It wasn’t long before the front desk staff of the hospital knew her room number by her name, and her name by her room number!
Throughout her life Donna had many hobbies and interests. She loved the outdoors, having had many hobbies including hiking, backpacking, camping, fly fishing, gardening, and photography. She also loved music (it's a Robison thing) and art. It wasn't hard to find her singing, playing her guitar or piano, painting, weaving, drawing, or quilting. She was also a natural mathematician, lover of animals, and could make a mean huckleberry pie. She loved music and mountains, cool rocks and flowers. She was silly, funny, and strikingly innocent. She was a fiercely devout Christian and had a positive outlook on the world that few people can match. She was one in a million. One of a kind. She will be greatly missed by all.
Donna is survived by her daughter Melissa, son Dave (Brenda), granddaughter Jordyn, brothers Ed and Jim, and hundreds of others who were impacted by her bright smile and friendly nature.
Donna’s memorial service will be held on April 13th at 2:00PM, at ONE* Church located at 15601 E 24th Ave Spokane Valley, WA, 99037.

Anthony Darrel Longinotti IV - December 23, 1982 - June 08, 2023

Departed: 06/08/2023 (Spokane )
Obituary Preview: Obituary for Anthony “Tony” D. Longinotti IV The world lost one of the all-time greats when our beloved husband, father, son, and brother Anthony Darrel Longinotti IV died June 8, 2023 after a courageous journey
through cancer. Tony was born December 23, 1982 and grew up in Spokane, WA. His kindergarten teacher pronounced him “a happy boy” and he was that — his constant smile and
warm personality made him instant friends. Tony graduated from Saint George’s School and Gonzaga University. He loved sports and many in the Panorama League remember him. None who saw it will ever forget his
incredible penalty kick that gave SGS their first state soccer championship in 2000. After college and a brief adventure living in Virginia, Tony wisely moved back to the PNW and thankfully met the love of his life, Laura, who welcomed Tony’s very close (some might say overbearing) family, and they married in 2015. Best of friends and loving partners, they soon welcomed daughter Avery and son Wesley. Laura was Tony’s guardian angel throughout his illness, and in times of health, they were able to have many wonderful adventures doing things Tony loved such as camping, travel (including
a particularly fabulous trip to Spain and Italy), and various home improvement projects. (He never met a tool or gadget he didn’t need to own.) Though their marriage was cut
much too short, they have created a lifetime’s worth of love and memories. Tony was one of the nicest, most outgoing people, and during his career at URM, he made many friends he truly loved. We are so grateful for their compassion and caring during his illness, allowing him to work when able and feel like a valuable member of
the team, and showing just how loved he was. Thank you to oncology surgery team at CCNW and the entire care team at Deaconess
10 Tower. You gave us the precious gift of time with Tony, and we are grateful. Tony especially loved his family, and we miss him so very much. Nothing will ever fill the hole he leaves behind. He is survived by his wife Laura, children Avery and Wesley, his parents Laurie Sundstrom and Tony and Patty Longinotti, devoted sisters Pia, Cara and Katie Longinotti, his nephews and niece, his grandfather Charles Pat Lund II, and
many aunts, uncles and cousins.
We love you Pooh. Tony’s wife and parents would like to invite his family and friends to join us in celebrating his too short but wonderful life on Saturday, July 15th, 2023. We will be having a memorial service at St. John’s Cathedral at 3:00-4:00pm, directly followed by a celebration of life gathering at Saint George’s School at 4:30pm - 7:30pm. There will be time for sharing stories, sharing a meal and drinks, and remembering the man we all
miss so much. Saturday, July 15th, 2023 3:00pm – 4:00pm at St. John’s Cathedral 127 E. 12th Ave Spokane, WA 99202

Departed: 05/02/2023 (Spokane )
Obituary Preview: Barbara Anderson, April 19, 1952 – May 2, 2023
Barbara “Barbie” LaRae Anderson passed away peacefully, surrounded by her closest loved ones on May 2 at the age of 71 after a diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension related to her underlying scleroderma.
She was born in Pomeroy, WA, on April 19, 1952, to Wilbur and Barbara Gingerich. The oldest of six children raised on the family farm, she became the patient, hardworking, practical caretaker that defined her selfless nature her entire life.
In her younger years Barbie excelled in academics, participated in 4-H and became Pomeroy’s 1970 Junior Miss. She graduated from Pomeroy High School in 1970 and from WSU in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She and her sister began their nursing careers working together at Sacred Heart Medical Center.
While in Spokane she met Larry Anderson of Moses Lake, WA. They married in 1975 followed by a weekend honeymoon in Seattle which included a Seattle SuperSonics basketball game. This set the tone for their lives together as sports fans, mostly Mariners, Seahawks, Cougars, Gonzaga basketball and the multitude of sports that her children, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren played.
Barbie and Larry settled in Spokane to raise their two daughters, Shannon and Hayley. Barbie returned to work at Spokane Weight Loss Clinic when her girls were young and later traveled the Palouse country roads every day to serve as Director of Nursing at Fairfield Good Samaritan Center. She finished her career of caring for patients as an instructor for nurses’ aides with the Healthcare Training Center in Spokane.
Barbie was happiest bundled up on the sidelines or sitting in the bleachers cheering for her grandchildren’s soccer, baseball, softball, football, lacrosse, gymnastics, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, tennis, mountain biking, cross country or track meets. Nothing brought her greater joy than being with her family whether it was traditional holiday gatherings with extended family back in her hometown farm community or planning destination summer vacations for her kids and grandkids to share adventures. Larry and Barbie loved traveling and exploring the western United States on annual spring and fall excursions to new places, often enjoyed with friends, and countless trips to San Diego to spend time with their daughter’s family.
Barbie was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her devoted husband Larry, her daughter Shannon (Tyson) of San Diego, their children Dane, Ryder and Rowen, and daughter Hayley (Leo) of Spokane and their children Mia, Khloe and Jase. She is also survived by her five younger siblings, Brad, Kayleen, Ken, Bart, Brent and their spouses and many nieces and nephews.
She took loving care of all of us.
Barbie’s wishes were for no formal services, only a simple gathering to share memories and enjoy family and friends. A Celebration of Life Open House will be held at the home of her daughter on Sunday, May 21, 2023, 2-5pm. Please visit Barbie’s online memorial at pnwcremation.com/obituary for details.

Kenneth Arnold Torgerson - July 27, 1933 - April 04, 2023

Departed: 04/04/2023 (Spokane )
Obituary Preview: Kenneth Arnold Torgerson was born on July 27, 1933, to Anna and Martin Torgerson. He was the youngest of their three sons. He grew up on the family homestead four miles northwest of Lambert, Montana. After he married Patricia (Witt) Torgerson, they stayed on the farm, raising their two children, Beth and Lewis.
Ken was an active integral member of the Lambert community. He farmed and ranched almost his entire life. As a teen, he helped build the two-story red barn with his father and two brothers in 1947. The barn still has his brand, Lazy KT -, painted on the door to the hayloft. Ken believed in land stewardship, so he made efforts to take care of the land, working with the Farm Service Agency and the Soil Conservation office on contour farming, putting in a dike, using the savory grazing method, creating an extensive shelterbelt, and other conservationist farm projects. He was honored for his conservation efforts throughout his years as a farmer, starting by receiving the 1964 Outstanding Young Farmer Award given by the Sidney Junior Chamber of Commerce and ending by receiving the 2000 Outstanding Conservationist Award for the Richland County Conservation District. He also worked with AGSCO, becoming their salesman of the month in June of 1977. He was active in the Farmers Union and other farm groups. He supported local co-ops. He was a substitute bus driver for the Lambert School District. He was active in the local Lutheran church. He supported his children’s 4-H projects, including when Lewis decided to raise pigs and when Beth bottle-fed multiple bum lambs and ended up with a herd of sheep. He helped them both with their 4-H steers, which they showed and sold at the Richland County Fair. He loved to tell jokes, and he loved to laugh. He cared deeply for his family, his farm, and his community.
In January of 1955, at age 21, Ken joined the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia until 1957, when he joined the Army Reserve, which he served until his honorable discharge in December of 1962. He loved to share stories of his time in the army, and he kept in touch with many of his army buddies through the years.
He married Patricia Hope Witt in 1960. They had a loving, caring relationship. They celebrated 61 years of marriage together before Pat passed away on April 1, 2022.
In 1976, together with Pat, he bonded the farm and built an alcohol still in order to make ethanol from his wheat crop. They used this ethanol to fuel the Women Involved in Farm Economics (WIFE) Ethanol Convoy that started in Lewistown, Montana and went to Washington, D.C. in 1977, educating senators and representatives about farm issues as well as people along the route.
Ken retired in 2003, the year he had a huge farm auction. Even after retirement, for many years, Ken and Pat would visit the farm to spend time working in the shelterbelt, starting new seedlings and taking care of the more established trees. For ten years, they went to Chandler, Arizona as “snowbirds” for the winter, where he enjoyed spending time with their friends there. Even with his dementia, Ken was always a great table pool player. He was also an ace at playing cards, whatever the game. He played Rummy daily with his daughter almost until the end.
Ken Torgerson passed away in his sleep on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at South Hill Village Memory Care in Spokane, Washington. He was 89 years old. He is preceded in death by his father Martin, his mother Anna, his brothers Mervin and Burton, and his wife Patricia. Family members who survive him include his daughter Beth (Bob Steinauer) and his son Lewis (Teresa), and his four grandchildren: Grant (Emily), Randi, Nicole, and Kendra--who was named in his honor. Kenneth Torgerson was kind and loving, a gentle soul, who will be missed by everyone who knew him.
His funeral service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Pella Lutheran Church (418 W. Main) in Sidney, Montana, with a short graveside service to follow at the Lambert Community Cemetery under the care of Fulkerson Stevenson Funeral Home of Sidney. The reception at Lambert’s Fox Lake Community Center (200 W. Main) will start at noon.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a lasting tribute to the deceased, preserving their memory and legacy.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or crematorium. In some instances, a close friend or colleague may also write an obituary.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), and surviving family members. It may also mention hobbies, achievements, and charitable organizations they supported.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from 100 to 500 words.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a nice way to personalize the tribute and help readers remember the deceased.

What is the difference between an obituary and a death notice?

A death notice is a brief announcement of a person's passing, usually including only the essential details such as name, age, and date of death. An obituary, on the other hand, provides more detailed information about the person's life and accomplishments.

Where are obituaries typically published?

Obituaries are often published in local newspapers, both in print and online. They may also be posted on funeral home websites, social media platforms, and online obituary databases.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and websites offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge a fee based on the length of the obituary or the number of photos included.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, it is possible to write your own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise and ensure that your life story is told in your own words. However, it's essential to keep in mind that your family may still need to add or modify certain details after your passing.

What if I don't want an obituary published?

If you prefer not to have an obituary published, you can make this clear in your will or discuss it with your family. However, keep in mind that an obituary can serve as a way to notify friends and acquaintances of your passing and provide closure for those who care about you.

Can I include humor or anecdotes in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased. Including humorous stories or anecdotes can help celebrate their life and make the tribute more engaging and memorable.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or website?

You can usually submit an obituary through the newspaper's website or by contacting their obituary department directly. Funeral homes often have established relationships with local newspapers and can assist with submitting the obituary on your behalf.

How long does it take for an obituary to be published?

The time frame for publishing an obituary varies depending on the publication or platform. Online obituaries may be posted within hours or days of submission, while print newspapers may take several days or even weeks to publish.

Can I make changes to an obituary after it's been published?

In some cases, it may be possible to make corrections or updates to an obituary after it's been published. However, this depends on the publication or platform's policies and procedures.
