Obituary Preview: Evelyn Cassandra Sue Watkins, passed away on April 16, 2024 in Cincinnati Children's Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio. She was born on March 7, 2024 in Fort Wayne to Robert Watkins and Amy Warren.
Evelyn was a shining star from the moment she came into the world. Everyone fell in love with her and the nurses all fought to care for her. She had a feisty spirit and her keen alertness will never be forgotten and she will be loved and missed forever.
In addition to her parents she is survived by her sisters, Brittany Watkins, Samantha Watkins, both of Ohio; Lydia Johnson, Converse; maternal grandmother, Patty Johnson, Florida; aunt Mary Ann Bacon, Florida; cousins, Rick Bacon, Allissia LaMar, Allina Bacon, all of Florida.
She is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Bonnie and Roger Watkins; maternal grandfather, James Johnson; aunt, Kimberly Watkins.
A graveside service will be held Friday, April 26, 2024 at Kendall Cemetery, Miami County. Owen-Weilert-Duncan Funeral Home, Larrison-Martin Chapel, 308 East Marion Street, Converse was entrusted with the arrangements.

Mozelle Ilene Williams - January 28, 1940 - January 01, 2024

Obituary Preview: Mozelle Ilene Williams passed away on January 1, 2024 after a brief bout with pancreatic cancer. Mozelle is survived by one cousin, Joe Thrailkill who resides in the Cincinnati area. Mozelle spent several holidays in the Thrailkill home over the years.
Mozelle was born in Marion, Indiana on January 28, 1940 to parents, Gerald and Lucy Williams. Her parents farmed in the Rigdon, Indiana area and Mozelle attended elementary school in Liberty Township, Grant County and graduated from Fairmount High School in 1958. She attended Taylor University and graduated with a degree in English in 1962. She moved to Hickory, North Carolina and completed a Master’s Degree in Speech Therapy at the University of North Carolina and worked for the school district in Hickory for several years. She was an active volunteer with Young Life during these years.
Mozelle returned to Taylor University in 1973 and served as the hall director for the final years of the Magee Campbell Wisconsin residence hall and then in the new English Hall. She had the distinction of being the longest serving hall director in Taylor’s history. She then moved to Muncie and attended classes and worked at the Christian Theological School in Indianapolis. Her final professional service was as a speech therapist in the Fayette County Schools. Mozelle was a long-time and faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church in Muncie, Indiana. Among other things, she coordinated the Adult Forum and served as Clerk of the Vestry. She was also a member of Grace's chapter of the Daughters of the King. Memorial gifts can be designated to the scholarship fund Mozelle established for the Masters in Higher Education program at Taylor University at Development Office, Taylor University,1846 Main Street, Upland, IN 46989
.

Obituary Preview: Roy Lee Druck, 85, of Converse, passed away in his home on December 4, 2023. He was born on April 20, 1938 to the late Alfred S. and Mable (Harris) Druck.
Roy was a 1957 graduate of Sweetser High School and worked with his family in farming all of his life. He was employed by General Motors and retired in July, 1998 after 34 years of service. He was a member of the General Motors Sympathy Club, UAW Local 977 and Indiana Street Rod Association. In his free time Roy enjoyed classic car shows, loved spoiling his poodles, Luke and Luckie, collecting toy tractors and socializing. He was a laid back man, loved people and had a great sense of humor.
He is survived by his son Bryan L. Druck, Converse; significant other, Kerry L. Druck, Converse; sisters, Joyce Druck, Marion and Alice (Leland) Richey, Swayzee; grandchildren, Mallory (Tanner) Easterday, Benjamin Jones, Alec (Kaitlin) Porman and Evan Porman; great-granchild, Sage Porman.
He is also preceded in death by his daughter, Renee S. Jones.
In accordance with Roy's wishes there will be no public services.

Nancy J. Phillips - August 15, 1942 - October 28, 2023

Obituary Preview: Nancy J. Phillips, 81, of Converse, was surrounded by her family when she passed away on October 28, 2023. She was born in Wabash on August 15, 1942.
She was the valedictorian and 1960 graduate of Noble Township High School, Wabash and she continued her education at Ball State and earned her degree as a registered nurse in 1963. While Nancy was studying at college she met Tom Phillips. After a fun and adventurous courtship Tom managed to muster up the courage to ask Nancy's father for her hand in marriage. The couple wed on October 19, 1963 and shared 60 years of love and commitment to one another and the beautiful family they created.
Nancy's nursing career spanned 40+ years in nursing facilities and hospitals. She was dedicated to the patients she served and would also volunteer with parish nursing and church camp as a faithful member of Converse Church of Christ. In her free time Nancy enjoyed scrap booking and had organized all of her hundreds of family photos into scrap books based on family member, friend or special occasion. Nothing was more important than her family and spending time with them. She and Tom were also blessed to have hosted foreign exchange students over the years treating each one with love and a memorable experience.
Nancy is survived by her husband, Thomas E. Phillips, Converse; children, Larry (Susan) Phillips, Royal Center, Indiana; Lisa (Patrick) Baer, Kokomo; Gary (Anne) Phillips, Converse; sister, Joyce Peebles, Wabash; 8 grandchildren, Matthias (Phillisha) Phillips, Jonathan (Abby) Phillips, Caleb (Nikole) Phillips, Derrik (Crystal) Baer, Jared (Halie) Baer, Brett (Caitlin) Baer, Jaden (Sierra Hall) Phillips and Tegan (Daniel Pellegrine) Phillips; 4 great-grandchildren, Jenavieve Phillips, Novaleigh Phillips, Emberlynn Phillips and Emelyn Baer; and Nancy's beloved feline companion, Precious.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert O. Winterrowd and Katherine L. (Sills) Slusser.
Visitation will be held from 4pm-7pm on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 in Converse Church of Christ, 301 East Wabash Street, Converse, Indiana. Obituary Preview: Juanita J. Maple, 91, passed away in Waters of Wabash, Wabash on October 7, 2023 surrounded by her family.
She was born in Jamestown, Tennessee on January 20, 1932. She came to Converse in 1953 where she lived a full and happy life serving others. Juanita was affectionately known as “Granny” to most people and lived up to the name with her generous and caring ways. She was baptized at Converse Church of Christ in 1982 and lived faithfully through Christ ministering to those in need, volunteering her time and donating treasure to help others. Granny was most dedicated to the Samaritan Room at CCC and The Ark Christian Ministries.
Granny quit school at the age of 16 to help her family. Later in her 40's she earned her GED and was very proud of that accomplishment. She worked at General Tire and SCM and kept working well into her 80's doing various jobs around town. Granny was an avid reader and most of all enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was also a member of the Converse Historical Society.
She is survived by her children, Sharon (Anthony) Meredith, Wabash; Patricia (John) Shafer, Swayzee; Dana (Wendy) Biggs, Converse; daughter-in-law, Jennie Biggs, Marion; brother, Leon (Beverly) Garrett, Muncie; sister, Donzetta Towne, Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; 7 grandchildren, Russell Ridgeway, Misty Bolinger, Michelle Lowe, Isaac (Elizabeth) Biggs, Levi (Brandi) Biggs, Anna Biggs and Ezra Biggs; 16 great-grandchildren, Jacob (Sarah) Ridgeway, Nola Ridgeway, Weston Ridgeway, Landon Ridgeway, Max Bolinger, Whitney Bolinger, Harry Bolinger, MaKenna Lowe, Evelyn Biggs, Ruth Biggs, Ezekiel Biggs, Esther Biggs, Gideon Biggs, Phoebe Biggs, Priscilla Biggs and Reuben Biggs; one great-great grandchild, Shepherd Ridgeway.

Visitation will be held from 4pm-7pm on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 in Converse Church of Christ, 301 East Wabash, Converse, Indiana. An additional hour of visitation will be held on Thursday, October 12, 2023 from noon until the service begins at 1pm in the church. Rev. Bruce Cameron will officiate. Obituary Preview: James A. Summers, 93, passed away on September 29, 2023 in Community Howard Hospital, Kokomo. He was born in Howard County on August 8, 1930 to the late James H. and Alberta (Gibson) Summers.
Jim graduated from Jackson Township High School in 1948. In May, 1949 he married his high school sweetheart, Sue Hullinger. The couple enjoyed a wonderful 39 years of marriage until her passing in 1988. Jim worked for General Motors as a crane operator and retired in 1987. He met Phyllis A. Leckron in February 1989 and they were married on June 25, 1989 in a surprise front yard wedding. The blended family of bonus kids and grandkids made for a wonderful 34 years. Jim was a faithful member of Converse Church of Christ where he served in several capacities including deacon. He was also a member of General Motors Sympathy Club. In his free time he enjoyed growing tomatoes and was awarded champion tomato grower. He liked to stay active while at home and wintering in Bradenton, Florida where he participated in all different activities including traveling, camping, shuffle board, bike riding and golf. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and hearing any of them laugh was his greatest joy.
Jim is survived by his wife, Phyllis A. Summers, Converse; his children, Susan B. (Maurice) Cooper, St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands; Stefi L. (David) Simmons, Fort Wayne; Kevin J. She graduated in 1946 from Logansport High School. Geraldean married Robert Bruner on July 8, 1948 and he preceded her in death on March 4, 2014. She worked in the school cafeteria for Converse Elementary School for many years.
In her free time she enjoyed solving difficult crossword puzzles, playing bingo, euchre and scrabble, especially with Bob. She was a strong supporter of the Hostess House in Marion where her euchre club played on Thursdays for years.
She was spunky, funny, quick witted and creative. A loving and devoted mother and wife, she always put her family first. The bond she and Bob had was something rare and special.
Geraldean is survived by her children, Robin Lee Bruner, Fishers; Kathy (Douglas) Schildmier, Greenfield; Beth (Eric) Juliot, Sharpsville; and grandchildren, Sarah (Chris) Bloom; Jenna (Michael) O'Connor; Evan (Jena) Schildmier; Nick (Amanda) Juliot; Madison (Rita) Bruner; Zach Juliot; and niece, Marcia (David) Krathwohl, Elkhart.

Trudy Ann Sowash - April 16, 1948 - September 02, 2023

Obituary Preview: She was born in Peru, Ind., on April 16, 1948 to the late Harry B. and Janet E. (Retherford) Sowash. She was a 1966 graduate of Oak Hill High School in Converse, Ind.
Ms. Sowash lived most of her life in Converse, where she was part of the family harness racing stable and farm for more than 20 years. She was a stockholder of the Miami County (Ind.) Fairgrounds, which continues to host harness racing events. Later she lived and worked in Wabash and Palmyra, Ind., where she made life-long friends who became like family.
Ms. Sowash is survived by two sisters, Joanne (Thom) Young of Campbell Hall, N.Y., and Julie (Gary) Green of Converse, Ind., eight nieces and nephews, many great nieces and nephews, and friends far and wide. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Jeanne Black and Patty McCann, and brother Jerry Sowash.
A Celebration of Life for family and friends will be held at the Tomahawk Restaurant, 2225 Lagro Road, Marion, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 25, 4-7p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
Donations in memory of Ms. Sowash may be made to the Harness Horse Youth Foundation, 2711 Friar Tuck Road, Anderson, IN 46013.

On September 26, 1966 UR married Rosetta M. Woodward and she preceded him in death on May 23, 2000. He worked for Chrysler and retired in 1987 after 35 years of service. UR enjoyed time hunting deer and squirrel and loved fishing on the Mississinewa or in a local pond. He also was an avid reader, he enjoyed watching westerns on tv and playing cards-especially pinochle and poker. UR was a straight forward kind of man never mincing words and he was loved by everyone.
He is survived by his sons and a host of extended family and friends. He is preceded in death by his wife, Rosetta M. (Woodward) Clayborn; son, Jerry Clayborn.
Visitation will be from 11am-1pm on Thursday, August 31, 2023 in Owen-Weilert-Duncan Funeral Home, Larrison-Martin Chapel, 308 East Marion Street, Converse, Indiana.  The funeral service will begin at 1pm in the funeral home with Rev. Donald especially loved riding on his golf cart with his best friend “Bailey” running along side.

Carla worked for Lein Corporation for over 20 years as a powder coater. She enjoyed collecting horses, racing-especially NASCAR and she had a fondness for dachshunds. Spending time with her grandchildren was the most special to her and she looked forward to any time she was able to be with them.

Obituary Preview: Patricia Eileen Young, 80, passed away in Ascension St. Vincents Hospital, Kokomo on March 29, 2023. She was born to the late Philip and Garnet (Watson) Young on March 29, 1943.
Pepper was a 1961 graduate of Swayzee High School and on to work in the health care industry as a nurses assistant. She worked for various facilities in the area including Marion General Hospital, Vernon Manor and local nursing homes. She retired in 1990.She was a faithful and devoted Christian and was active in clown ministry where she ministered to many families and children over the years. To rejuvenate and rest she would often to go Johnson Bible College for retreat time. Pepper was a collector of many things including turtles, stuffed animals. She enjoyed spending time with her family and helping others. She was an active member of AZB sorority and attended Converse Church of Christ.
She is survived by son, Philip J. (Stephanie) Young, Kokomo; grandchildren, Philip Young, Scott Young, Justin Young, Joe Allen and Autumn Ray; great-grandchildren, Alex Young, Lailah Young, Skyler Young, Jace Allen, Kailen Ray, Tea Allen.  She is also preceded in death by siblings, James Young, Stephen Young and Shirley Simmons.
Graveside services will be privately held in Roanoke. The Celebration of Life service luncheon will be held at 12:30pm on Thursday, April 6, 2023 in Converse Church of Christ, 301 East Wabash, Converse, Indiana. Thomas Edwin Smith - November 17, 1932 - March 21, 2023

Obituary Preview: Thomas "Tom" Edwin Smith, 90, of Madeira Beach, Florida, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023.
Tom was born on November 17, 1932 to Gwendolyn (Rebholz) and Harold Smith in Wabash, Indiana. Tom was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Smith.
Tom graduated from Converse High School in 1950. He joined the United States Army and was stationed in Germany from 1953 to 1955. Upon returning from the army, Tom married his life-long friend and high school sweetheart, Betty Lou Lenon, on June 2, 1956. The two settled in Converse, Indiana, where Tom began farming and raised their three children on the family farm. Tom and Betty called Converse home for 80 plus years. In retirement, Tom and Betty split their time between Converse and Florida for 17 years, before moving full-time to Madeira Beach, Florida eight years ago.
Tom was a member of the Converse United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee. Tom served on the board of the Grant County Soil and Water Conservation Agency, was a member of the Converse Lions Club, and also served as a Boy Scout Leader. Tom had a passion for his family and his career as a farmer. He was an avid boater and fisherman. Tom loved his time with family and friends on the Barbee Chain of Lakes in Northern Indiana, Klotz Lake in Canada, and Offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. Tom was known to always catch the first fish of the day and usually the largest one as well!
Tom enjoyed all sports but was especially interested in college and pro basketball, NFL football, and the Tampa Bay Rays. He and Betty enjoyed walking along the Florida beaches and spending time with their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Tom also had two other important hobbies - gardening and raising ponies for his grandchildren to enjoy.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Betty; three children: Gregory (Amy) Smith of Treasure Island, Florida, Marcia Kay (Jack) Colson of Fishers, Indiana, and Ronald (Lisa) Smith of Sharps Chapel, Tennessee; five grandchildren: Abigail (Itamar) Colson, Seth (Emily) Colson, Emily (Jose) Martinez, Layne Smith, and Nathan (Lauren) Jones; and five great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Cecelia, and Thomas Colson, Aviv Megiddo Colson, and Harrison Jones.
Tom will be deeply missed by his family and friends who loved him dearly. A private service for immediate family will be held in Florida. A burial with military honors will be held at 2pm on Thursday, October 12, 2023 in Converse Cemetery, Converse, Indiana.

Bruce liked to stay busy and was a volunteer EMT and firefighter with the Converse Fire Department and a deputy sheriff. When he wasn't busying himself with work, handyman jobs or volunteering his time he would hit the golf course for some relaxation and fun. His family was very important to him and spending time with them was a priority.
He is survived by his children, Tabitha (Andrew) Nemecek and Melissa (Nathan) Higdon, both of Greentown; Phoenix (Clint) Storm, Kokomo; mother, Shirley (Tibbets) Helton, Kokomo; companion, Cheryl Helton, Converse; like a son, Ryan (Kali) Downam, Ft. Wayne; brother, Gary (Missy) Helton, Converse; sisters, Sandy (Jeff) Emery, Galveston; Brenda Shockley and Barb (Bob) Davis, both of Kokomo; grandchildren, Rebekah Guthrie; step-grandchildren, Sara Higdon, Samuel (Emily) Higdon, Joshua Higdon, Spencer Nemecek, Alexander Nemecek; sister-in-law, Marie Helton, Texas. Bruce was from a very tight knit family and also had several special uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

We will miss this wonderful,  strong woman who loved the Lord, her family, and friends. She enjoyed socializing and attending weddings, graduations, reunions, and gatherings.  Joann persevered through caring for a special needs daughter and raising three boys as a single mother. A life well lived as a good and faithful servant.

After that she worked as a nurse recruiter for St. Joseph Hospital in Denver, Colorado. During retirement she served as a mentor to high school students striving to achieve scholarships for college.
Diane had a passion for watercolor painting and gardening. She also taught piano for several years and loved playing classical music and popular Broadway tunes. She had a one-of-a kind personality and she made friends easily wherever she went. She was loved by so many for her radiant smile, kindness, her infectious laugh and quick wit.
She was also preceded in death by her sister, Judy; brother, Johnny; daughter, Joanna.

Evan was active in the agriculture community farming all of his adult life and was often referred to as the Feed Mill Manager for Maple Acres Feed Mill. In his free time Evan enjoyed model airplane building and flying, riding his Harley Davidson, cooking and he especially liked smoking meat and barbecuing. He was also a fan of the Indianapolis Colts and Purdue Boilermakers. Evan was a hard worker and dedicated to everything that was important to him.
He is survived by his daughters, Stefanie M. (Alex Lamble) Bashore and Samantha J. (Kyle) Fouts, both of Kokomo; siblings, Kathryn L. (Jim) Moseley, Clarks Hill, Indiana; Steve A. During her ministry she officiated many weddings and funerals and believed that her gift to couples and families was showing love and spiritual guidance in the happy times as well as the sorrowful times. Maria enjoyed working word puzzles, crocheting, cooking and baking. Poncho would bring Maria apples when he worked for the orchard and her homemade apple desserts were her signature along with her homemade tamales. She loved her family, was a giver of love to all and will be missed greatly by all who knew her.
