Joan Berniece Ewinger - September 18, 1926 - June 27, 2020

Departed: 06/27/2020 (Mt Pleasant)
Obituary Preview: Joan B. Ewinger died peacefully on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at the Danville Care Center, Danville, Iowa.  She was nearly 94.  Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel of Mt. Pleasant, IA, assisted the family with the arrangements.
Joan was born on September 18, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of William and Florence Kann and the sister of Bill Kann, who predeceased her.  She was a precocious girl and an excellent student.  When she was 12, she received a serious head injury when she was hit by a car while riding her bike.  Brain surgery was not as advanced in 1938 as it is today.  It is a miracle that Joan survived.  She had to relearn to walk, talk, dress and feed herself.  The recovery took almost a year.
Joan persevered and graduated from Main South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois.  She went on to Coe and McMurray Colleges and graduated with a bachelors degree to become a teacher. She was working in Peoria, Illinois when she and friends went to a dance.  There she met Roger Ewinger, who was studying at Bradley University on the GI Plan after WWII.  They married in 1950.
Their first year of marriage was spent camping and traveling.  They went across the U.S., even north through Alaska on the Alkan Highway.  They eventually settled temporarily in Palo Alto, California.  They also traveled in Mexico.
Joan and Roger returned after that year to Roger’s farm north of New London, Iowa.  There, the city girl became a farm wife.  They had 3 children in swift succession:  Curt R. Ewinger who died in 2010, survived by wife Susie of Choteau, Montana; Nancy E. Foltz of Belmont, North Carolina, married to Richard Kleinmann; and Scott Ewinger of Danville.
About 12 years after the children were born, the family took months long camping trips to the western U.S. and Canada.  They visited near every National Park, but every trip made a stop in Yellowstone Park, where fly fishing was the main activity.  Joan proudly caught her first fish on a fly rod in the pristine waters there.
As Joan and Roger grew older, Roger stopped being a full time farmer.  They began going to Port Isabel, Texas in the winters where they enjoyed warm weather and social activities with the other “Snow Birds”.  Joan loved to read, play Scrabble, do crosswords, and play Bingo and bridge.  She took daily walks.  After Roger died, Joan stayed in Texas in the winters and returned to Iowa in the summers.
Joan’s greatest joy in life was in the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  There were annual reunions at the farm, and a few family trips after Roger’s death (Yellowstone Park was a memorable one).    Her grandchildren are Winston Ewinger of Missoula, Montana (wife Flanna and daughter Rory); Meredith Ewinger of Van Nuys, California (daughter Owen);  Logan Foltz of Salt Lake City, Utah; Lisa Foltz of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Whitney Buchanan of Appleton, Wisconsin (husband John and sons Jack and Charlie).
Our family is scattered across the country, and we will have a private memorial at a later time. Joan’s ashes will be scattered at the places she loved on the farm, and in the small cemetery in Pleasant Grove, Iowa where there are headstones for Roger and Curt.
The family expresses its gratitude to the Danville Care Center employees who took such loving care of Joan, and to the Hospice nurses.
We respectfully request that no flowers or donations be sent.  If you are so inclined, just say a little prayer for a life well lived.

Obituary Preview: Linda Lou Moyle, 76, of Hopkins, MN, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, IA, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Thursday, May 28, 2020 at Augustana Chapel View.
In accordance with Covid-19 regulations, guidelines for appropriate social distancing and the wearing of face masks will be followed.  Visitation will begin after noon on Monday, June 1, 2020, at Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. that evening.   Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, at Olson-Powell Chapel with Reverend David Plooster officiating.  Interment will be in Forest Home Cemetery.  Gifts of love and friendship may be given to Timber Bay Youth Investment or Muscular Dystrophy Association. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com.
Linda Lou was born on December 27, 1943, in Mt. Pleasant, IA, to Richard and Elloise (Barton) Moyle. A little bundle of joy, she gave Richard and Elloise so much love. Linda overcame many challenges in her life but always had a smile on her face and love in her heart for anyone she met. In 1956, Linda and her family moved to La Crosse, WI, and called this home for the next 35 years. A few years later, Linda became a big sister to Lori Lea and a lifelong bond began. She was the best sister anyone could ask for pouring out the most amazing love and care on her.
Linda attended school and also took ceramic classes at the Y.  Although some things took her a bit longer to learn, she excelled in the world of ceramics. In the early 60’s “Linda’s Ceramics” was born. Along with her mom, Linda started a ceramic shop in their basement. They did it all – poured the molds, painted the greenware, to sell their ceramics at local craft shows. Not only that, Linda taught ceramics to many wonderful people over the years. She was deeply loved by each of her students and built many friendships throughout the years.
In 1990, Linda and her parents moved back to Mt. Pleasant where they lived for the next 27 years. She eventually got her driver’s license and her very own car. Linda began working at Hardee’s, and then McDonald’s where she greeted the regular guests with that infectious smile. You could hear “Hi Linda” from people all over town. Linda loved helping out at nursing homes, working in her garden, and caring for all of her precious pets. In 1991, she became an aunt to “her boy” Nathan. From the first time she held him it was love at first sight and their unconditional love for each other could be seen by anyone who saw them together. Unfortunately, in 2015, she suffered from a stroke that moved her to Arbor Court and then to Augustana Chapel View in Hopkins, MN to be closer to her sister and family. Linda always faced many challenges in her life with grace, hope and determination. Sadly, the coronavirus got a hold of Linda and took her away from us too soon. We hold tight to the fact that she is with her Heavenly Father and no longer in pain, and she is with dear family and friends that went before her.
Linda is survived by her mother, Elloise of Hopkins, MN; sister, Lori (John) Schlatter and nephew, Nathan Schlatter, all of Hopkins, MN; uncle and aunt, Wes and Gerry Barton of Mt. Pleasant, IA; and many, many cousins.
She was proceeded in death by her father, Richard; baby brother, Richard Dale; maternal grandparents, J F and Marie Barton; and paternal grandparents, Frank and Nina Moyle.
