George O. MORLEY - March 29, 1924 - June 24, 2021

Departed: 06/24/2021 (Ulysses)
Obituary Preview: George Olmsted MORLEY, 97, of Ulysses, PA, passed away Thursday, June 24, 2021 in UPMC Cole, Coudersport.  Born March 29, 1924, in Coudersport, he was the son of Edwin J. and E. Elizabeth Olmsted Morley.  On September 17, 1948, in New Hampton, NY, he married the former Maude A. Morley, who survives. A 1942 graduate of Ulysses High School, he worked as a pipeliner for 30 years and was a self-employed excavator for over 15 years. He was a member of the Ulysses United Methodist Church, Lewisville Lodge #556 F&AM in Ulysses, and served on the Ulysses Borough Council for 32 years.
George was a very social person, who loved life and people.  Everybody was his friend or potential friend.  No matter where he went, he would see someone who knew him.  He enjoyed life and did not want it to end.  There was always more music to hear and learn, another dance, or family event to enjoy.  He was an avid and talented dancer.  Maude and George’s graceful dancing was a delight to observe. Music was George’s life-long passion.  He was blessed by God with a strong, beautiful singing voice.  He used his versatile voice for singing with classical and church choirs, as well as barbershop groups, country music, and calling for square dances.  Known for singing while working on the pipeline, his co-workers nicknamed him “The Singing Pipeliner.”
Family was his other passion.  These two passions became intertwined in 1960 when he taught himself to play guitar.  A family band was formed after he taught some of his children to play the ukulele, guitar, and bass.  Together, Maude and George began to encourage their children to sing and harmonize.  It gave George great pleasure to have the family perform at many events. Well-known for his humor, George was an endless source of entertainment to family and friends.  As the great-grandchildren came along, each would be taught the “fine art” of making faces.  Because of his tutelage in this art form and other silliness, they dubbed him “silly grandpa.”
George spoke often of his idyllic childhood on the family farm in Gold where his older sister, Mary, younger brother, Jack, and he grew up.  Always an excellent storyteller, George would regale his family and friends with story after story about the mischievous escapades that he instigated on Jack and others. George’s most favorite spot in the world was Morley Hollow in the Gold area near where he grew up.  To provide a place where the family and future generations could gather in this beautiful spot, George built a large building called the Morley Pavilion. Family parties and reunions are held here.  Very popular senior dances used to be held here with music being provided by George’s “No Name Band.”
The next favorite place for George was the big white house on the corner in Ulysses, PA.  George and Maude settled here in the summer of 1953.  This house remained the family home for 66 years.  It became known to the family as “Grand Central Station,” when their family grew to ten children.  As the next generations were born, the house was filled with love and laughter as it rocked with the activities and chaos of their ever-increasing family.
Surviving besides his wife of nearly 73 years, Maude, are:  five sons: Bryan (Janine) Morley of Gold, Douglas (Pat) Morley of Gold, Steve (Cathy) Morley of Fillmore, NY, Gary (Rhonda) Morley of Coudersport, and Greg (Joyce) Morley of Lancaster;  five daughters, Sally (Robert) Ferguson of Bradford, Vickye (Michael) Hudson of Gold, Debbie (D. Chris) Haley of Ulysses, Melanie Morley of Coudersport, and Tammy (Ron) Hagar of Mansfield;  21 grandchildren, Andrew (Joanne) Morley, Jessica Morley, Amy (Chris) Quimby, Rob Ferguson, Ryan (Jenn) Ferguson, Matt (Joan) Morley, Jeanne Morley, Jonathan (Leigh) Haley, Nate (Kristen) Haley, Tim (Autum) Haley, Mark (Maria) Morley, Aaron (Vara) Morley, Traci (Paul) Rankin, Kevin (Karime) Morley, Luke (Carrie) Morley, Chad (Beth) Morley, Nikki (Kriss) Morley, Erica (Jake) Bachman, Benjamin (Morgan) Wilson, Josh (Cheyenne) Morley, and Sam Morley;  two step-grandchildren, Alesia (Seth) Blosser and Travis Hagar;  37 great-grandchildren;  a brother, Edwin “Jack” (Beatrice) Morley of Greencastle;  many nieces, nephews, and cousins.  In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his step-mother, Nina Olmsted Morley;  his sister and brother-in-law, Mary (Lou) Dushek;  and great-grandson, Ethan Haley.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It may also include information about their surviving family members, funeral or memorial services, and any other relevant details.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to notify friends, family, and community members of a person's passing, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences. They also provide a permanent record of a person's life and legacy, often including achievements, accomplishments, and personal characteristics.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the deceased person's family members or close friends. However, it can also be written by a funeral home or crematorium, especially if the family is not able to do so.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, interests, and surviving family members. It may also include information about funeral or memorial services, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or online platform. Generally, it should be concise and to the point, ranging from a few sentences to a few paragraphs at most.

Can I include photos or other multimedia in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and some print publications allow you to include photos, videos, or other multimedia elements to enhance the tribute and make it more personal.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper or online platform?

The submission process varies depending on the publication or platform. You can usually find guidelines and contact information on their website or by contacting their customer service department directly.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

The cost of publishing an obituary varies widely depending on the publication or platform. Some newspapers and online sites offer free or low-cost options, while others may charge a fee based on the length of the obituary or the number of words.

Can I edit or update an obituary after it's been published?

In most cases, yes. If you need to make corrections or updates to an obituary that has already been published, contact the publication or platform where it was originally submitted.

How long will an online obituary remain available?

The duration that an online obituary remains available varies depending on the platform. Some websites keep them active for a limited time (e.g., 30 days), while others maintain archives that can be accessed indefinitely.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?

Yes! Many people choose to write their own obituary as part of their estate planning or as a way to reflect on their life and legacy. This can be a meaningful way to ensure that your story is told in your own words.

What's the difference between an obituary and a eulogy?

An obituary is a written notice announcing a person's death and providing basic biographical information. A eulogy, on the other hand, is a speech or written tribute delivered at a funeral or memorial service that celebrates the person's life and shares personal anecdotes.

Can I include humor or personality in an obituary?

Absolutely! An obituary should reflect the personality and spirit of the deceased person. Including humorous anecdotes or quirky details can help bring their story to life and make the tribute more engaging.

How do I handle sensitive or difficult information in an obituary?

It's essential to be honest and respectful while avoiding unnecessary details that might cause discomfort for others.

Can I include charitable donations or memorial funds in an obituary?

What if I'm unsure about certain details or facts in an obituary?
