Jerry Morgan - June 27, 1943 - January 17, 2024

Departed: 01/17/2024 (Okolona)
Obituary Preview: OKOLONA – Sidney Gerald (Jerry) Morgan, born June 27, 1943, in Noxubee county, Mississippi, died on January 17, 2024. He leaves his beloved wife, Susie Morgan of Okolona, MS. Jerry was father to Amy Morgan Myers (Tommy) and Stephanie Morgan Zibby (Mike) and grandfather to Michael Zibby, all of Germantown, TN, as well as a father to Susie’s children Jenny Russell (Dustin) of Okolona, MS and Joey Crane (Mandy) of Pontotoc, MS, and grandfather to Emma Kate Russell, Suzannah Russell, Abbie Crane, and Olivia Crane, all of whom he loved as his own. He leaves behind his dear cousins that were like sisters to him, Martha (Dale) Brooks of Madison, MS and Margaret (Steve) Behrends of Livingston, TX, and numerous friends that he loved dearly, including Bobby Franklin, his right-hand man, and Tommy Redus and Victor Wyatt. He was devoted to his family and friends and will be greatly missed by many.
He was born to Maggie Wade Morgan and Sidney Morgan and lived his childhood years in Brooksville, MS. His father was a farmer in Noxubee county and passed away from a heart attack at an early age when Jerry was only 3 years old. After his father’s death, his mother opened a grocery store in Brooksville and he grew up helping his mother in the store. His mother, her sisters (Ruth Casey and Rachel Betterton) along with their husbands (Ted Casey and Clarence Betterton) raised him, and they were a close family. He adored his mother, aunts, and uncles throughout his life and their influence on his life was immeasurable. He took wonderful care of them in their elderly years until their deaths.
In high school, he played baseball, football, and basketball and was the quarterback for Brooksville High School. At the age of 13, he began working for John Dewey Owings, Jr. at Owings Drug. After graduation in 1961, he attended Mississippi State University for 3 years until he transferred to the University of Mississippi to begin pharmacy school. While at Ole Miss, he joined the Army Reserves. In 1968 his unit, the 173rd out of Greenwood, MS was called up to go to Vietnam. In Vietnam for a year, he drove a fuel truck and credits Gwin Taylor for saving his life when he fell asleep in a hooch during a rocket attack and did not wake up – Gwin came back to get him. The friendships and stories of that time in his life were cherished by him.
After returning from Vietnam, he moved to Memphis, TN and worked at GE Credit where he had a successful career and again, made lifelong friends. Having not finished pharmacy school before leaving for Vietnam, his aunts were influential in his decision to go back and finish. In 1972 after graduating from pharmacy school, he moved to Columbus, MS and worked at Southern Drug Co.
Having inherited an entrepreneurial spirit from his mother and learning about business throughout his childhood as he helped her in the grocery store and working at Owings Drug, he bought Okolona Drug Co. in Okolona, MS in 1974, the same year that his twin daughters were born. He loved that store and every customer (friend) that walked through the door. His customer service attitude was like none other. He was the epitome of a small-town independent pharmacist in the dedication and service to his customers and community.
He was passionate about independent pharmacies and their impact on local communities. He was a founding member of the Mississippi Independent Pharmacies Association (MIPA) where he worked for legislation to protect independent pharmacies to allow them to remain competitive with national chain stores. As in all chapters of his life, he made lifelong friends through the pharmacist and independent pharmacy community.
After selling Okolona Drug Co. in 2015 and ‘retiring’, his entrepreneurial spirit was still at work. In 2022, with dear friends, he opened Westside Pharmacy & Gifts in Tupelo, MS. At the age of 80, he was still attending the Atlanta Gift Market to buy for the gift shop. He loved that part of the business and was well known and loved by many of the vendors he bought from.
He loved Ole Miss football and was a season ticket holder for many years. He enjoyed tailgates in the parking lot outside of Vaught-Hemingway Stadium with friends and family. He loved attending ‘away’ games too and had stories that will surely live on. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Okolona, MS. He loved the community of Okolona and his hometown community in Noxubee county. He lived a life of service and wanted to help others as much and as often as he could. As a business man in Okolona for so many years, he supported and promoted the community and was recognized as Citizen of the Year, and received the Golden Heart Award in 2023. He was a current board member of Three Rivers.
To know him was to love him. His stories were legendary, his laugh was contagious, and his smile lit a room. Similar to his father, he had a first heart attack at a young age, 37, but unlike his father, he survived. He spoke often of the blessing from God for the extra 43 years of life he had afterwards. His friends and family were blessed beyond measure by those ‘extra’ 43 years. His family finds peace in knowing that because of his faith in Jesus, he now enjoys life eternal in Heaven. He will be greatly missed.
A Life Celebration Service will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, January 23, 2024, from the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church in Okolona with his pastor, Rev. H.B. Miller officiating, and words by Rev. Dr. Randy Lewman and Steve Holland. Entombment will be in Chapel of Faith Mausoleum at Lee Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 PM – 7 PM on Monday, January 22, 2024, at Holland Funeral Directors – Okolona Chapel and from 12 PM – service time on Tuesday at First Baptist Church-Okolona. Holland Funeral Directors – Okolona Chapel is honored to serve the family.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 142, Okolona, MS 38860, or to the John Dewey Owings Memorial Scholarship at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy, University of Mississippi Foundation, 406 University Avenue, Oxford, MS 38655.
