Shirley Swanson - January 20, 1930 - November 10, 2021

Departed: 11/10/2021 (Manilla)
Obituary Preview: Shirley Rose Schroeder was born January 20, 1930 to William and Rose Schroeder. Shirley passed away on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at Mercy One Medical Center in Sioux City attaining the age of ninety-one years, nine months and twenty-one days. One of three children, she grew up in Manning and graduated from Manning High School in 1948.
She married Richard Arnold Swanson on January 19th, 1951. Ten children were born to that union. The couple lived in Aspinwall for a few years, then on several farms in the Manilla area for a number of years. In 1963 she and Richard built and moved into a new home in Manilla, and she lived there until her passing.
Shirley spent her entire adult life dedicated to her husband, family and faith. In the early family days, they had no indoor plumbing, she cooked meals on a corn cob stove which also heated the house, and she heated water for baths in metal tubs (no water heater). Those issues went away when they moved into the Manilla home, but challenges still existed. She washed clothes for a family of 12 with a washer and a hand cranked wringer, and hung the wash on a clothes line year-round, regardless of weather. She canned several hundred quarts of fruits and vegetables every summer, baked 15 loaves of bread every week, and all this while suffering from anhidrosis - the inability to sweat. Can you imagine the strength it took to work over a hot stove canning food in a non-air-conditioned house on 95-100-degree days, when you can't sweat? There were times Richard would rush her to the hospital to get her cooled down. The next day, she'd be right back at it.
Shirley retained a great sense of humor and a very sharp wit her entire life. She loved to embroider, completing countless projects. She absolutely loved when grandkids and great grandkids would visit. She always hosted events at her home on the 4th of July and Christmas Eve. She was absolutely selfless, and would do without to ensure she had enough money to give all of the grandkids and great grandkids birthday and Christmas gifts.
Shirley LOVED Neil Diamond music, and attended the first of 5 Neil Diamond concerts at the age of 68. Her love of music didn't stop there, as she attended 10 Trans-Siberian Orchestra concerts. She also frequently enjoyed listening to Angie's mid 80's rock-in-roll tapes while doing dishes. Shirley was also an ardent Iowa Hawkeye fan and was glued to the TV for every Hawkeye football and basketball game. She was thrilled in 1985 when she and Richard attended the Rose Bowl to watch her beloved Hawkeyes.
Preceded in death by her husband, Richard Swanson; daughter, Wanda Andreasen; parents, William and Rose Schroeder; parents-in-law, Herb and Irene Swanson; brothers, Laverne and Donald Schroeder; sister-in-law, Katherine Schroeder; and daughter-in-law, Julie Swanson.
She is survived by her children, Dennis (Virginia) Swanson of Glenwood, IA, Becky (Roger) Jepsen of Dunlap, IA, Steve (Carol) Swanson of Manilla, IA, Dale Swanson of Manning, IA, Dan Swanson of Manilla, IA, Rod Swanson of Murphy, TX, Duane - aka Arnold (Lisa) Swanson of Council Bluffs, IA, Gerald (Brenda) Swanson of Manilla, IA, and Angie Swanson of Creston, IA; 18 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Rheta Dwyer - February 19, 1938 - September 11, 2021

Departed: 09/11/2021 (Manilla)
Obituary Preview: Rheta Dwyer, 83, passed from death unto life to be present with her Savior on Saturday, September 11, 2021 at CHI Health Mercy, Council Bluffs, Iowa. As Laura, her granddaughter, said, "She just had the best day of her life." At her passing she was surrounded by her husband, children, grandchildren and pastor. Songs were sung, prayers were prayed, and Scripture was read as grief mingled with joy. Rheta will be sadly missed but fondly remembered. She was the wife of Wayne Dwyer for 62 years and always did what had to be done to help her husband support their family. Rheta was a hard worker. Some of her occupations, in addition to being a homemaker, included: driving school bus, waitressing at Perkins Restaurant, working as a secretary in a land survey office, being an integral part of the annual grape harvest at a friend's vineyard, selling Avon and McNess products door to door, raising and selling produce, as well as baked and canned goods at farmer's markets. For several years, they raised hundreds of chickens and sold eggs on a regular route. In her 60's, Rheta went to truck driver training school, graduated, and obtained her class A CDL so she could go over the road with her husband as a co-driver. It was inspiring to see a 5' elderly woman driving an 18-wheeler. Rheta's best legacy is that of being a believer and follower of Jesus. She became a Christian in her early 30's and never turned back. While living in Janesville, Wisconsin she served with Wayne in Janesville Bible Baptist Temple. After moving to Manilla, Iowa they continued their walk with Christ by joining with the believers at Faith Baptist Church in Carroll, Iowa. As she matured as a child of God, God's love in her was seen in the way she cared for her elderly mother. Her relationship with Jesus manifested in her role as a quiet peacemaker when she became aware of tension between people for whom she cared. Rheta served God by serving others with generous sharing of her talents. She loved crocheting, knitting, and sewing afghans, blankets, stuffed toys, and a couple of special sweaters for people within her sphere of influence. She had great skill in canning and preserving fruit and vegetables raised in the home garden then dispersing them freely to many. Her home baked cookies were famous. Rheta was the forerunner in her family's acceptance of Christ. Now she is the first to meet him.Left to cherish her memories, her husband: Wayne Dwyer of Manilla; children: Douglas Dwyer of Beloit, Wisconsin, Suzanne and her husband Kyle Christensen of Defiance, Iowa and Kathleen and her husband Jim Eaker of Janesville, Wisconsin; grandchildren: Thomas Christensen and his wife Alex, Carrie and her husband Haden DeSpain, Scott Christensen, Laura and her husband Evan McKinney, Hope Christensen, Amie Eaker and James Eaker and his wife Ana; great-grandchildren: Gabriel, Emery, Caden, Memphis and Parker; sister: Janet Stewart of Tennessee; other relatives and friends. Francis Snyder - September 23, 1947 - September 09, 2021

Departed: 09/09/2021 (Manilla)
Obituary Preview: Graveside Funeral Services will be at 10:30 AM on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla.
Francis Dale Snyder, age 73, of Manilla, passed away Thursday, September 9th, 2021, as a result of a stroke at the Pinnacle Specialty Care Center in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Francis was born September 23rd, 1947 to Dale Snyder and Viola (Bargenquast) Snyder at the Foderberg Home in Manilla, Iowa. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith as a small child and remained a spiritual person throughout his life. He attended country school in rural Manilla and then elementary school in Irwin. Francis started school in Manilla when the family moved to a farm south of Vail. Francis graduated from Manilla High School in 1966. After graduation Francis spent a year in Kansas City, MO pursuing electrical studies.
Francis' interests eventually led him to employment in the home and road construction industries. He worked at Henningson Construction in Atlantic for several years before joining Western Engineering in Harlan. As Francis thoroughly enjoyed traveling and sightseeing, driving truck for Western Engineering gave him the opportunity to visit many different areas of the Midwest including Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska. He frequently told stories entertaining family and friends of the people he met and the sites he'd seen along the way such as his chance encounter with Sam Walton in Kansas and the fascinating flea market in Tahlequah, OK where numerous bargains could be found on household items benefiting his parents.
Eventually Francis made the decision to leave the life on the road to move back to Manilla so he could help care for Dale and Vi. He bought a small acreage west of Manilla and made several improvements to the property before selling and moving to the family home in Manilla. He assisted his parents by driving them to appointments, making repairs to the home and providing needed care and companionship to both as they aged.
Francis was a skilled carpenter and made benches, bird feeders, piggy banks, picture frames and many other unique items to display in the house or give away as gifts. He loved to write letters and kept a journal for many years. He valued time spent visiting with neighbors, family and friends. Paul Weible - April 09, 1944 - September 04, 2021

Departed: 09/04/2021 (Manilla)
Obituary Preview: Paul Dean, son of LeRoy Bryan and Edith (Cadwell) Weible, was born on April 9, 1944, in Manning, Iowa. He grew up on a rural Manilla, Iowa farm, attended country school and graduated in 1962 from Glidden-Ralston High School. Following graduation, he lived in Omaha and Elkhorn, Nebraska where he was a lineman and construction supervisor for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.
In June of 1969, Paul was introduced to Vicki Petersen by his dad, who had been admitted to the Harlan Hospital following a tragic accident. Vicki was assigned to provide his dad's nursing care the following day. His dad wanted them to meet each other. Paul took her to dinner at Cronk's Cafe in Denison. Just days later, his dad was aware that they did like each other, and sadly his dad passed away only two weeks following the accident. Paul and Vicki became soul mates and were engaged in September. They were united in marriage on January 17, 1970, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Harlan, Iowa. They lived in Council Bluffs, Iowa and then moved to rural Neola where they built a home and started their family. He continued working for the telephone company. In 1977 Paul, Vicki, Angie and Bryan moved to rural Marne where they lived for five years and then settled into their home in Walnut in 1982. Paul became self-employed and established his business A-B Construction, burying utilities in the Walnut, Marne and Atlantic areas. Paul and Vicki moved from Walnut to Marion, Iowa in 2005.
Paul was a hard worker, loved the outdoors, going fishing and attending sports activities when he was able. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and a kind, loyal friend to many. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. Paul loved to shake the hand of anyone he met, and to this day they comment on and remember that firm, strong grip he had. In the 1990s physical health challenges set in, and he courageously battled those health challenges for nearly twenty-five years. Paul accepted the Lord as his personal Savior as a young adult. The Lord gave him his courage and strength to battle those health challenges up until receiving the loving care that Hospice provided, along with the prayers of many relatives and friends, which helped him pass into the Lord's loving arms, surrounded by his loving family, on Saturday September 4, 2021, at St. Luke's Hospice in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Paul is survived by his wife of 51 years, Vicki, of Marion, Iowa; daughter Angela and her husband Casey Jones of Marion, Iowa; son Bryan Weible of Grimes, Iowa; grandchildren: Aryn Jones; Carter Jones; Abby Charlier and her husband Darrin; Callie Weible and Jake Weible; great-grandchildren: Macie, Kinsley and Waylon Charlier; brothers-in-law: Robert E.
