Betty Parrish - May 30, 1943 - March 31, 2021

Departed: 03/31/2021 (Coos Bay)
Obituary Preview: Betty (Roth) Parrish, loving wife and mother passed away peacefully in her home in Roseburg, Wednesday, March 31, 2021. Betty was 77 years old.
Betty was the daughter of Rex and Verna Roth and grew up in Coquille. Betty was a fourth generation Oregonian of the Coquille Valley. Betty grew up on a ranch that belonged to her family for generations and was a Dairy of Honor in the Coquille valley. During school at Coquille High School Betty was a member of the band and played the saxophone. Betty was also in 4-H and won for a cow named Star and lamb named Honeybabe that she raised and entered into the county fair. Betty met Gene Parrish, also of Coquille, at the Coos County fair in 1960. He fell madly in love with her and followed her around and pursued her until she finally gave in and went on a date with him for the first time. They married March 18, 1961 and were married for 60 years.
Betty loved to garden and landscape. Her yard and home always looked gorgeous with lots of healthy plants that benefited and thrived from her gentle green thumb. Betty was also an expert in herbal and naturopathic medicine.
Betty was beloved by all of her family. She dedicated and gave her life to being a loving, supportive wife, mother and caregiver to her children. She took care of her mother for many years along with her older sister until their passing. She was a beautiful soul inside and out and never looked or seemed her age. In fact people who knew her described her as a “timeless beauty” and no one could ever guess her age correctly when they tried.
Betty was full of love for her family and if anyone needed help it was often Betty that everyone turned to. She was always there to lend an ear and give positive words of support and wisdom when anyone in the family needed advice or just a person to talk to. Her family’s great loss is heavens gain of a beautiful angelic soul the day she passed.
She is survived by her husband, Gene Parrish; daughter, Angela Parrish of Coquille; son, Michael Parrish of Clatskanie, Oregon; daughter-in-law, Katherine (Parrish) Bode of Warrenton, Oregon; son, Daniel Parrish of Coquille; daughter, Karen and son-in-law, George Daskalakis of Forest Grove, Oregon; along with a brother, Roger Roth of Coquille; grandchildren, Alex Crockett of Toledo, Oregon, Ashton Crockett of Coquille, Christopher Parrish of Bend, Oregon, Haley Doney of Warrenton, Oregon, Camilla Moran of Fort Mitchell, Alabama, Sarah Daskalakis of Portland, Oregon, Nikolas Daskalakis of Cleveland, Ohio, Ariana Bender of Rock Creek, Oregon, Jacob Daskalakis of Forest Grove, Oregon; and eleven great grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Rex and Verna Roth; her sister, Rosanne (Roth) Molthu; and grandson, Cody Parrish.

Wilma Lee Utal - November 11, 1928 - April 25, 2017

Departed: 04/25/2017 (Coos Bay)
Obituary Preview: Wilma Lee Utal, loving wife of Matt Utal, died April 25, 2017 at the age of 88 in Coquille after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Lee, as she was known, was born Nov. 11, 1928 to Thelma and William Barr in Burlingame, Calif. She and her parents and three siblings lived in many different California towns during her growing up years. One of her fondest memories was spending summers in Yosemite hiking and swimming.
She attended CK McClatchey High School in Sacramento where she dated Matt Utal who thought they should get married but she declined. During her senior year she met a Merchant Marine home on leave, Richard Thompson, and they began dating and later corresponding when he returned to the service. They were married in March 1946 of her senior year and she joked that she took her homework on her honeymoon.
After graduation, Lee and Ric attended Placer Community College followed by San Jose State University where they both earned an undergraduate degree. From there they went on to graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, Madison where Lee earned a master's degree in history with a thesis entitled: “Senate Isolationists, 1935-1941.” She gave birth to her daughter, Nancy, the same year she obtained her degree in 1955. She and Ric moved to Athens, Ohio where they had another daughter, Linda, in 1959 and then soon after moved to Cedar City, Utah.
In Cedar City, Lee became the head costume designer for what is now the Utah Shakespearean Festival. She also taught costuming and theatrical make-up at Southern Utah University. Lee and Ric divorced in 1963.
In 1965 Lee married Maurice Rigby and moved with him and her daughters first to Akron, N.Y., and then to Salina, Okla., where her new husband became the plant manager for Georgia-Pacific in Pryor, Okla. While in Oklahoma Lee pursued a variety of interests including substitute teaching, photography, newspaper reporting and selling real estate. She and Maurice divorced in 1976 and Lee moved back to the California Bay Area to be nearer to her extended family.
In California, she reconnected with her high school boyfriend, Matt Utal, who at the time was a musician with Les Brown and his Band of Renown and had recently gone through a divorce as well. They were married in 1980 at Matt’s home in Glendale, Calif.
Lee worked as the activities director at Casa Glendale, an assisted living facility, for seven years. She loved writing the weekly newsletter for the residents and planning outings, classes and games. During this time she also took up quilting and painting; beginning in oils and progressing to acrylics and water colors. She surprised everyone with her talent that bloomed so late in life.
Upon Matt’s retirement from Les Brown’s band they moved to Bandon after a former Glendale neighbor moved there and encouraged them to do the same. Lee and Matt spent several years in Bandon before moving to Coos Bay to be nearer to the community of music and art events they both loved. Lee inspired many with her creativity, curiosity and excitement about learning new things – everything from writing poetry to studying Van Gogh’s paintings and letters. In the few years prior to the onset of Alzheimer’s, she spent hours mastering digital photography and the computer.
Lee is survived by her husband, Matt Utal of Coos Bay; her daughters, Nancy and Rick Antle of New Haven, Conn., and Linda and Steve Gerner of Kayesville, Utah; stepdaughter, Melinda Utal of Glendale, Calif.; sisters, Ann and Don Burt of St. George, Utah and Jeanne and Gene Schrepel of Sacramento, Calif.; sister-in-law, Bea Barr of Valdez, Alaska; grandchildren, Elizabeth and Ryan O’Donnell, Benjamin Antle, Joshua Gerner and Laura Gerner; stepgrandchildren, Shoghi Castel De Oro and Pablo Castel De Oro; a great-grandson, Oliver O’Donnell; seven nieces and nephews; and by her former caregiver and loving friend, Margo Jackson, and her wonderful caregiver for the last two years, Lilo Isenburg. A memorial is planned for a later date.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Thelma Barr; her brother, William Wayne Barr; and a daughter, Dorothy Thompson, who died in infancy.
Arrangements are under the direction of Ocean View Cremation & Burial Service, 541-888-4709. Friends and family are encouraged to sign the online guestbook at www.coosbayareafunerals.com

Dean Metcalf Frisbee - August 24, 1956 - April 24, 2017

Departed: 04/24/2017 (Coos Bay)
Obituary Preview: A memorial service for Dean Metcalf Frisbee, 60, will be held from 5pm- 8pm, Sunday, July 30 at the Lake Theater Café, 106 N. State Street in Lake Oswego. Please bring memories, stories and good cheer. We will raise a glass to Dean!
Dean Metcalf Frisbee was born in Portland,Oregon, August 20, 1956.  He died peacefully at his home in Lakeside, Oregon, April 24, 2017.  He was 60 years old.
Dean was the youngest child of Don and Emilie Frisbee.  He grew up in Dunthorpe, attending Riverdale School and Lake Oswego High School.  Activities he enjoyed were Boy Scouts, skiing and playing in the neighborhood woods.  He attended Southern Oregon College.
Dean had a life of varied experiences, adventures and challenges.  His curious mind led him to learning and talking about history and machines (cars, boats and trains).  He was always repairing or rebuilding a vehicle or two. He worked as a cabbie and a school bus driver.  He invested in real estate.  He also did carpentry and yard work in the small coastal communities where he lived.
Later in life he took up craft arts, ceramics, woodworking and painting.  He recently planned to finish writing a mystery novel and make wooden spinning tops for sale at local craft fairs.
Dean was warm, kind, generous and had an astute sense of fairness. He had several long time friends and companions.  Unfortunately, his mental illness affected his relationships and he suffered private remorse for these conflicts. Dean enjoyed fishing, lake swimming and a good story.  His laugh was contagious. His eyes would scrunch up with delight and his shoulders would shake when one of life’s ironies struck him as funny.  As his cousin Eric wrote, “he saw the world as a mystery to be delighted in.”
Dean lived a life that mattered and his family cared deeply about him.  He was pre-deceased by both Don (2015) and Emilie (2003).  He is survived by his sister, Ann Naymie, and two brothers, Robert and Peter Frisbee and his friend, Susie Henning.
Private cremation rites were held at Ocean View Memory Gardens in Coos Bay.
Arrangements are under the care of Coos Bay Chapel, 541-267-3131.
Friends and family are encouraged to sign the online guestbook.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It's usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

Why are obituaries important?

Obituaries serve as a way to honor and celebrate the life of the deceased, while also providing important information to those who knew them. They help to notify people of the passing, share details about the funeral or memorial service, and offer a sense of closure.

Who writes an obituary?

Typically, a family member or close friend of the deceased writes the obituary. In some cases, a funeral home or obituary writer may assist with the writing process. The author should have a good understanding of the person's life, personality, and accomplishments to create a fitting tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service (if applicable), hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

The length of an obituary can vary depending on the publication or platform. Generally, it should be concise yet meaningful, ranging from 100 to 500 words. Online obituaries often have more flexibility in terms of length and content.

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many publications and online platforms allow you to include one or more photos with the obituary. This can be a great way to personalize the tribute and make it more engaging for readers.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. You may need to provide the written obituary, along with any photos or other materials, via email or online portal.

Can I write my own obituary?

Yes, some people choose to write their own obituary in advance. This can be a therapeutic exercise that allows you to reflect on your life and legacy. However, it's essential to keep in mind that the final version may need to be edited or revised by others after your passing.

How much does it cost to publish an obituary?

Carefully review the obituary multiple times for spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, and factual inaccuracies. Ask others to proofread it as well before submitting it for publication.

In some cases, yes. If you want to republish an obituary on a special occasion (e.g., anniversary of death) or in conjunction with another event (e.g., memorial service), you may need to obtain permission from the original publisher or adhere to their republication policies.

What if I need help writing an obituary?

If you're struggling to write an obituary or need guidance on structure and content, consider consulting with a funeral home director, grief counselor, or professional writer who specializes in obituaries.
