Mona Howe Pomeroy - August 17, 1935 - October 15, 2023

Departed: 10/15/2023 (Clovis)
Obituary Preview: Mona Howe Pomeroy passed away in Clovis, New Mexico on Sunday, October 15, 2023 at the age of 88, after a courageous battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The trigger for her illness is unknown, since she was never a smoker.
Mona was born on August 17, 1935, the daughter of Melvin and Marguerite (Carter) Howe. In December 1940, Mona and her brother Marshall moved with their parents to Fort Sumner, New Mexico, where her father was the owner and pharmacist at Howe Rexall Drugs until 1974. Mona had her first paying job at the drugstore, serving ice cream and soft drinks at the soda fountain during the summer.
After graduating from Fort Sumner High School in 1953, Mona continued her studies at the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque, where she became a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority (KKG). She graduated from UNM on June 5, 1957 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education. While at UNM, she met the love of her life, Harry Pomeroy, who was working part-time serving meals and washing dishes at the KKG house to pay for his board while studying for his geology degree. She and Harry were married in Fort Sumner on June 8, 1957; together, they had two daughters, Marsha and Suzie.
After their marriage, Harry and Mona lived in Albuquerque and Hatch (NM), then moved to Clovis in 1962 so that Harry could take a science teaching job at Marshall Junior High. Mona chose to be a stay-at-home mother until both daughters were in school, after which, she was a substitute teacher in the Clovis Municipal Schools and study hall aide at Yucca Junior High. She also worked as receptionist/secretary at Johnson Lumber Company. For the last 22 years of her career (1979 – 2001), she was the secretary at Parkview Elementary School.
Mona was an avid reader, and also loved to travel. During her lifetime, she visited all 50 US states and many countries in Europe (mostly on self-guided driving tours during the summer months). She and Harry also enjoyed several cruises to the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, the British Isles, Scandinavia, Russia, Australia, and New Zealand. Her other hobbies included stamp collecting, calligraphy, decorative painting, quilt piecing, and knitting. She was an accomplished baker, creating beautifully decorated birthday cakes for her family, and she was especially renowned for the delicious coffee rings she made by the dozen every year at Christmas time.
Although Mona lived most of her life in New Mexico, she was always interested in the history of Texas (and history in general), due to her parents’ roots in that state. She shared the hobby of genealogy with her husband, and together, they spent many years researching their family lineages. Based on this information, Mona became an at-large member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the El Portal chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mona actively served her community throughout her life. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star (Keystone Chapter #27); past president (1973-74) and life member (since 2002) of the Plains Regional Medical Center Auxiliary; and Director Emeritus (and past secretary) of the New Mexico Academy of Science. Mona and Harry were charter members of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where Mona was an elder and served multiple terms as Clerk of Session.
Mona is survived by her husband of 66 years, Harry Pomeroy; two daughters, Marsha Pomeroy-Huff (Clifford) of Pittsburgh, PA and Suzie Brown (Robert) of Farwell, TX; three grandchildren, Spencer Huff, Emily Brown Pearson (Paul), and Hayden Brown (Mattie); one great-grandson, Reid Pearson; one niece, Malinda Howe Figg; one nephew, Cory Howe (Bobbi); five great-nieces and great-nephews; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Marguerite Carter Howe; her stepmother, Sarah Wright Timm Howe; her brothers, Don Howe and Marshall Howe; and numerous uncles, aunts, and cousins.
Visitation will be at Muffley Funeral Home, 1430 North Thornton, Clovis, on Wednesday, 18 October, 1:00 to 5:00 pm. Internment will be at Fort Sumner Cemetery at 10:00 am on Thursday, October 19, followed by funeral services at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Clovis at 3:00 pm, with Terry Buesgens presiding.
Pallbearers will be Robert Brown, Tony Carter, Cory Howe, Clifford Huff, Spencer Huff, and Paul Pearson. Honorary pallbearers are PRMC Auxiliary members. The family suggests memorial donations in her honor to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, the Rotary International PolioPlus program, the American Lung Association, or the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

Jimmy Wayne Wallace - August 25, 1948 - September 18, 2023

Departed: 09/18/2023 (Clovis)
Obituary Preview: Jimmy Wayne Wallace, age 75, of Tucumcari, NM passed away on Monday, September 18, 2023. Services will be held on Friday, September 22, 2023, from 11:00 AM at the First Baptist Church in Tucumcari, 321 E Center St., with Pastor Rusty Kenyon and Pastor Bob Miller officiating.
Jimmy was born on August 25, 1948, in Ft. Collins, CO to C.L. Wallace and Loraine (McKennon) Wallace. He married the love of his life, Jan Thomas, in the summer of 1969 in Tucumcari, NM. They had three daughters and got to spend 54 wonderful years together.
Survivors include his wife, Jan Wallace. His three daughters and their spouses: Jennifer Wallace Griggs and Tom of Phoenix, AZ; Jana Wallace Rogers and Ernie of Tucumcari, NM; and Julie Wallace Haman and Chuck of Clovis, NM. His two brothers: Johnny Wallace and Joan of Lewisville, TX; and Miles Wallace and Nanette of Amarillo, TX. He leaves behind four grandchildren: Ethan Rogers, Jackson Rogers, and Emma Rogers, Bryce Jimenez and Faith; one great grandson, Klein Jimenez; three nephews and six nieces.
He is preceded in death by his parents, C.L. and Loraine Wallace, and one brother, Don Wallace.
In 1966, Jimmy graduated from Tucumcari High School with honors, making the All-State Choir. He loved to sing, and he could sing beautifully. In the Fall of 1967, he joined the National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1973. He was a member of the NM National Guard Sharp Shooters.
He met the love of his life, Jan, in 1963. She was his best friends little sister. They began dating in 1967 and were married on July 8, 1969. They were married for 54 yrs. It was amazing to watch the love they had for each other. The couple moved back to Tucumcari in November 1972, from Amarillo, Texas, where Jimmy took a job with UPS. He retired from UPS after 31 years of service. His kids always said, "Dad knows everyone in the county because of that brown truck!" They were also not allowed to pray for snow until Jimmy was home on Christmas Eve and then they had to pray it away by the morning of the 26th.
In October of 74, they welcomed their first daughter, Jennifer, into the world. A short 15 months later, in February 1976, they welcomed their twin girls, Jana and Julie. He was the best "girl dad" around. He loved his girls! He, along with a few other parents, started the first girls basketball league for 5 - 6th graders so his girls, who loved the sport, could learn to play before Junior High. During the summer, you would find Jimmy with his family and a whole lot of teenagers at the lake on Saturdays. He taught half of Quay County youth how to swim or water ski.
Sundays belonged to Jesus though. If the church was open, the Wallace family was there. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1980 at FBC Tucumcari. He served for over 40 yrs. During that time, he also sang in the choir, and for a time, led the music. He directed handbells for several years, teaching the uncoordinated, rhythm, and mathematically challenged, to count and many to read music. But what he enjoyed most and did so well was teach Sunday School to High school boys. He did this for over 20 yrs. He loved working and ministering to young people, and he was a father figure for those without.
Some of Jimmys most favorite people were his grandkids, Ethan, Bryce, Jackson, and Emma and, his recently added, great grandson Klein. He loved spending time with them whether it was playing cards, out on the boat fishing, at the disc golf course or even at a Cheer Competition. They loved their Papa - The Man, The Myth, The Legend. When he wasnt trying to drown them at the lake on the tube, he was joking around, riling them up, or laughing and loving them.
Jimmy passed away on September 18, 2023, at his home with loved ones by his side. He taught his family to love, no matter what, to forgive and grant others grace and mercy. He had a gentle soul and a calmness about him only Jesus could give. Although he will be greatly missed, we know he is healed, he is with family, he is with Jesus & we will see him again.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Muffley Funeral Home, www.muffleyfuneralhome.com, (575) 762-4435.
