He was the funny, loving, and caring piece of each of us that we needed most, when we needed it most. He loved playing video games with friends and family and taught many of us everything we know about gaming (we all may lovingly debate the champion at GoldenEye and Smash).

Thomas "Tom" Edward Rawe - June 10, 1957 - April 19, 2024

Departed: 04/19/2024 (Ft. Thomas)
Obituary Preview: Thomas “Tom” Edward Rawe, Sr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 19, 2024, surrounded by his loving family, after a heroic 18-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Tom is preceded in death by his infant daughter Catherine Ann Rawe.
Tom was born in Fort Thomas, KY on June 10, 1957 and attended St. Thomas Elementary and Covington Latin School. In 1971, Tom moved with his family to Camp Hill, PA where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Lisa Ann. After graduating from Camp Hill High School, Tom attended Thomas More College in Crestview Hills before transferring to Georgia Tech, where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1979.
Tom and Lisa married in 1978 and moved to Gastonia, NC, where Tom began a 35-year career with Duke Energy. While at Duke, Tom was an innovative and diligent engineer, but his favorite role was serving as Plant Manager at Marshall Steam Station, where he ran one of the most efficient power plants in the country.
Tom was most proud of his role as husband to Lisa and father of TJ and Craig. During his 29 years living in North Carolina, Tom served as the Chaplain of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 11, where he supported many young men, including his sons TJ and Craig, in achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Tom and Lisa loved traveling, and would take their sons on frequent trips to the Blue Ridge mountains, Chincoteague Island, boating on the lake, and camping in the woods. He was an active parishioner of Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church in Belmont, where he served on the Finance Council and Knights of Columbus. Tom was an ardent volunteer, regularly lending his time and handyman talents to organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Catherine’s House, and many other organizations in Gaston County. Even in the neighborhood, Tom was well-known to be the first one there with his tools and a can of beer, ready to tackle a project or lend a hand to anyone in need.
In 2008, Tom accepted a promotion in Cincinnati with Duke Energy as a Vice President and was able to move back home to Cold Spring, KY. Upon leaving Duke in 2012, Tom enthusiastically served as a consultant for EPRI where his years of experience helped improve power plants across the country. Upon retiring, he was even busier as he fully dedicated his time to continuing his lifetime of service to many initiatives in Northern Kentucky. Tom’s proudest project was designing and building raised-bed community gardens in multiple locations to grow and provide food for those in need. He served as a Board Member with Catholic Charities in the Diocese of Covington, and was regularly involved in many of their ministries, especially Parish Kitchen and the Urban Education Center. Tom also served as a Board Member for the Northern Kentucky Children’s Advocacy Center and was a regular volunteer with The Giving Fields. As a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Tom was a member of the Knights of Columbus, regularly Lectored, volunteered weekly with the Spare Time Parishioners, and served on the Finance Council, Parish Pastoral Council, and the Planning Development Maintenance Committee.
Tom dedicated his life to the service of others. Guided by his deep faith in the Lord, and inspired by the life lessons of his beloved parents and grandparents, Tom was ready to support his neighbors and community immediately when they had a need. His greatest dedication was caring for Lisa after her diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis in 1989, for whom he would move mountains, even through the final days of his life.
Tom is survived by his loving wife of 45 years Lisa; parents Edward and Ruth Rawe of Cold Spring, KY; sons Thomas Jr. “TJ” (Jenna) of Gastonia, NC; Craig (Geales) of Atlanta, GA; brother Jerry (Lynn) of Murphy, NC; sisters Mary Rapp (Tom) of Mason, OH, and Barbara King of Crestview, KY; granddaughter Sara Rawe; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends of whom he loved dearly.

Carolyn’s life was a testament to love, generosity, and compassion. She treasured her family and her faith above all else. She was surrounded by the love of her family, but none could compare to the love she shared with Don, her husband of fifty-six years who stood faithfully by her side.
Born January 3, 1935, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Carolyn faced early challenges, losing her mother, Mary Lillian (Smith-Lantry), when she was only seven years old, and her father, William A. Wessels, on September 11, 1966, exactly 24 years later. Her father was her rock and her hero throughout her life.
A 1953 graduate of Mother of Mercy High School, Carolyn maintained close ties with many of her classmates. She worked as a clerk at Prudential Insurance and later as a bookkeeper at Vulcan Supply & Metals before becoming a certified dental assistant for Dr. Jahnke in Cheviot and, many years later, for Dr. Steinbeck, an oral surgeon in Ft. Thomas, KY.
Together with her husband, Carolyn dedicated much of her time to charitable endeavors, notably the Mary Rose Mission, providing hospice care for those in need, fundraising for the people of Grenada, and serving the hungry through their food kitchen in Florence, KY.
Carolyn cherished moments spent reading, having lunch with friends, and most of all, spending time with her five grandchildren, Laura, Josh, Michael, Wessley, and Lucas. However, her greatest joy was the quiet time she shared with the love of her life, her husband Don.
Carolyn’s legacy of faith and compassion will continue to inspire those who knew her.

Brian Anthony Connett - June 09, 1960 - March 06, 2024

Departed: 03/06/2024 (Ft. Thomas)
Obituary Preview: Brian A. Connett, age 63, devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, son and brother and friend of many, passed away suddenly on March 6, 2024. Brian Connett was born June 9,1960 to his parents Irvin and Edna (Harmon) Connett. He grew up in Ft Thomas, KY as the youngest of their five sons. The brothers- Ron, Doug, Glenn, Tim and Brian made lots of great childhood memories on Dumfries Avenue and at the family River Camp. He attended St Thomas School, then Highlands High School and finished at Vocational School where he received a welding certificate. This trade served him well as he went onto his first job with his father at the 740 Marina in Newport. He eventually became the Harbor Master, taking care of the boaters and the safety of the Marina. It was at Captain’s Anchorage, the marina’s restaurant, that Brian met Jody. Shortly thereafter, their riverboat romance began…Of course, Brian had a boat, so the rest is history!
Brian moved his business upriver where he built the harbor and docks at the F&N Steakhouse and Thomasville. He started working in the offseason with Jody’s brother Jim, framing houses for local builders. Brian found his true gift as a talented carpenter and a framer and in 1990, he started his own business. He and his crew were sought out by many home builders, gaining a reputation as the “go to guy” on the most complicated projects. Many of the most beautiful custom homes in northern Kentucky were constructed by Brian and his team. His son Tyler joined Brian’s business and continues in his father’s footsteps as a very talented carpenter himself. His work ethic was unmatched and Brian always provided well for his family. Brian and Jody married in 1992. They have a fun love story and spent many weekends boating, water skiing, camping and hanging out with lots of incredible friends. They became parents of two amazing sons, Tyler in 1993 and then Matthew in 1994. Brian loved spending time with Jody and his boys and shared his love of camping, vacationing, fishing, hunting and anything outdoors with them. Many weekends were spent at Berling Creek and at Dan’s farm in Augusta. The guys built an amazing retreat where they made memories to last forever. Hopefully, Matt and Tyler will continue Brian’s passion of hunting, fishing, nature and the appreciation of God’s glorious creation. We will miss Brian’s unpretentious charm, his generosity towards others, his honesty, his integrity and his humor. We will continue to cherish the memories and laughter that Brian brought to his family, his dear friends in this life and those that have passed. Janet "Jann" Marie Hartman - March 12, 1955 - March 03, 2024

Departed: 03/03/2024 (Ft. Thomas)
Obituary Preview: Janet Marie Hartman, 68, of Fort Thomas, Kentucky, passed away on Sunday, March 3, 2024, at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jann and her five siblings grew up in Highland Heights, Kentucky. She loved to brag about being the baby of the family even though she was just six minutes younger than her beloved identical twin sister, Trish. She attended St. Joseph Catholic School, Cold Spring, Kentucky and Bishop Brossart High School, Alexandria, Kentucky. After graduating from Northern Kentucky University with an Associate Degree in Nursing, she was a Registered Nurse for over 20 years at The Christ Hospital. The “career” she loved having the most though, was being a Wife, Mom, and Grandma. Roles she was made to fill. She raised the bar so high. With the most selfless generosity of spirit, she was always ready to help if she could. We cannot count the number of acts of service, loving affection, thoughtful gifts, time, and prayers that she happily gave to everyone she loved. Jann loved to laugh, especially with her twin, when they were often the only ones in on the joke. She had a special place in her heart for animals, especially her daughters’ beloved pets, Penelope and Matilda, whom she adored. She loved all animals so much but had a special love for horses and riding. She would often identify houses as she passed by the names of resident dogs and cats instead of their owners. She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church in Fort Thomas, Kentucky for 40 years. She had a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. She was known for her frequent devotions, novenas, rosaries, and intercessions for anyone who had a need. Whether it was landing a new job, finding love, getting pregnant, or battling illness. She endured her own illness with strength and grace, never losing her joy for life. Jann will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Her mark on this world is great and she leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love and deep, unwavering faith. She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Helen (nee: Snider) Stricker and brother, David Stricker, Sr. Jann is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Alan Hartman; daughters, Alison (Tim) Rymer and Clare (Cory) Van Duyn; sons, Patrick (Elizabeth) Hartman and Colin (Ariel) Hartman; four grandchildren, Luke, Lydia, Isla Rose, and Everett, and sisters, Mary Anne Pinelli, Kathleen (Lee) Vonderhaar, Martha (Matthew Ploucha) Stricker and Trish (Mark) Hunt. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Friday, March 8, 2024, at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 9, 2024, at St. Thomas Church, Fort Thomas, and will be live-streamed at https://stthomasnky.org. Frequently Asked Questions

What is an obituary?

An obituary is a written notice that announces the death of a person, typically including their name, age, date of birth and death, and a brief biography. It is usually published in a newspaper, online obituary platform, or funeral home website to inform friends, family, and community members of the passing.

What is the purpose of an obituary?

The primary purpose of an obituary is to share the news of a person's passing with others, providing details about their life and legacy. It also serves as a way to notify people of funeral or memorial service arrangements, allowing them to pay their respects and offer condolences to the family.

Who typically writes an obituary?

In most cases, the obituary is written by the family members or close friends of the deceased, often with the assistance of a funeral home or obituary writer. The writer should be someone who knew the person well and can provide an accurate and heartfelt tribute.

What information should be included in an obituary?

A typical obituary includes the person's full name, age, date of birth and death, place of residence, occupation, education, military service, hobbies, achievements, and surviving family members. It may also include information about the funeral or memorial service, charitable donations in lieu of flowers, and any other relevant details.

How long should an obituary be?

Can I include photos in an obituary?

Yes, many online obituary platforms and funeral home websites allow you to upload photos of the deceased. This can be a meaningful way to personalize the obituary and celebrate the person's life.

How do I submit an obituary to a newspaper?

Contact the newspaper's obituary department directly to inquire about their submission process and deadlines. Be prepared to provide the written obituary text, along with any accompanying photos or documents.

Can I write my own obituary in advance?
