Larry Braxton Dent - May 29, 1940 - November 28, 2023

Departed: 11/28/2023 (Mt. Vernon)
Obituary Preview: Larry Braxton Dent was born to Alma Allyne (White) and Loren Braxton “Jack” Dent on May 29, 1940 near the town of Springlake in the panhandle of West Texas. He was the second of five children. Larry came from humble beginnings, but the strong family values and spiritual faith instilled in him, created a solid foundation that shaped the value system he carried throughout his lifetime. He was committed to his church, his family, and helping those needing assistance.
Early in Larry’s childhood, the family moved from Texas to Roseberg, Oregon, but soon set roots in Salem, Oregon. His work ethic strengthened doing simple rural work, usually picking strawberries with his brothers at small farms. This work ethic spilled into his academic life and allowed Larry to become the first in his family to attend a University. His character and clever mind helped him achieve academic success at the University of Oregon where he also joined the Sigma Chi fraternity. He had many adventures with his fraternity brothers and made lifelong friendships. As the Sigma Chi House Manager, he completed his first real estate transaction when he helped the fraternity purchase their chapter house. He also enjoyed recalling many adventurous stories like a cross-country trip hitchhiking to the annual Sigma Chi convention in Florida with a few brothers or spending the summer logging in Tahoe with his brother Jim. After college, Larry attended Bolt Law School at the University of California at Berkeley. It was here where he met his first wife, Jean Louise Kalbach. After marriage, the two finally settled in Orinda, California, where they raised their two girls, Allison and Ainsley.
Larry worked hard as a corporate lawyer and went on to establish a successful private practice in Oakland and Pleasant Hill, CA. However, his true joy was always found beyond his law career. He had a keen sense for challenge and adventure. Although he continued in various business investments, he found time to explore and grow his hobbies. He developed an interest in flying airplanes and, for many years, he owned and piloted a Sierra Beechcraft single prop airplane obtaining his instrument rating. He then transitioned to boating and soon, yachting became his lifelong passion. He crewed many competitive sailboat racing teams in the San Francisco Bay, even winning the Bay Series Champion title, and enjoyed vacationing aboard many bareboat yachts in the San Juans, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific.
Larry quietly worked to make the world a better place. He retired from his law career in his early 50’s, but retirement did not slow him down. He moved to Anacortes, WA in 1994 where he continued to pursue various business ventures. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and worked to improve any project in which he was involved. In 2012, he assumed ownership of ABC Yacht Charters, which he renamed Crown Yacht Charters. He thoroughly enjoyed serving his clients, especially helping them plan their routes and itineraries, to ensure they enjoyed the best the Islands have to offer. He enjoyed driving his tractors, starting trees (which he called “an act of faith for future generations”), and improving the land. He spent time working in his shop tinkering on anything related to boating or home improvement. He had a talent for drawing maps and diagrams in detail. He was a frequent visitor of local business’ candy jars and free cups of coffee while creating small talk. Larry took great joy in his family and cherished his time at the annual Dent-Nelson family reunions, which he attended without fail. He was a steady force of support and love for his family, his daughters and grandchildren, and his influence and love will be greatly missed.
He is survived by daughters Allison Jeanne Dent Curletto (husband Paul, grandchildren Ava & Bettina (18) and Alessandro (15) of Lafayette, CA) and Ainsley Ann Campbell, (husband Patrick, grandsons Braxton (16) and Darren (13) of Loomis, CA), and long-time partner, Yvette Prado. His three brothers, Jim (Carolyn), Jack (Peggy) and Gary (Mindy) also mourn his loss. He is predeceased by his parents, Braxton and Allyne Dent and his sister Linda Nelson Benson, who embrace him with the Lord.
His Celebration of Life service will be held at Bethany Covenant Church in Mount Vernon, WA at 11am on January 6th, 2024. All are welcome to attend.

Departed: 07/01/2023 (Mt. Vernon)
Obituary Preview: Robin Nelson Schroder AKA “Rockin’ Rob”
Born January 15, 1976 in Sedro Woolley and proudly raised in Skagit Valley. Joined the Guardian Angels July 1, 2023. Son of Susan Fox. Brother to Rachael, Kelsie, Damascus, Jasper, Ivy. Married Cedar Jamison in February 2000. Proud father to Kalea Rae and Robin Kaitel. Rob’s passion was motorsports. He fulfilled his life-long dream of racing at Skagit Speedway where he was well-loved by the racing community. His fearless zest for two or more wheels brought his family and friends together year after year; his home with Cedar was the gathering place for many, first in Bow and later in Sedro Woolley: they worked as a team to welcome all of those in his “Tribe.”
Rob was a dreamer and philosopher, adventurous and curious about everything. He envisioned, and worked toward, building an “Empire” for his children, a place of security where they had the freedom to follow their dreams. His kindness and generosity left an imprint on everyone he connected with: they remember him as genuine, sensitive, warm and animated, bold and brave. Rob turned dreams into reality and possessed a strong moral compass. He saw life in black and white: the balance, force, and energy in the world made a lot of sense to him. He left a legacy for all of us: Work hard, live fast, live fully, but “Don’t Forget to Stop and Smell the Roses.”

David Bruce Thompson - January 04, 1950 - October 29, 2022

Departed: 10/29/2022 (Mt. Vernon)
Obituary Preview: David Thompson, age 72, passed into heaven late Saturday evening, October 29, 2022, following a heart attack. Born in Bellingham, WA, in January 1950, David was the youngest of three children born to George and Johanna (Gudjonson) Thompson. Their home in Blaine was a happy place, often filled with many of their northwest relatives, including many fun-loving cousins. David attended school in the Blaine school district where he was very active in basketball, football, and track. The district was so small, all the boys were expected to participate in sports so there would be enough players to fill the teams. David spent many childhood summers visiting his sister on the farm in Wisconsin and, later, fishing in Alaska.
David graduated from high school in 1969. That fall, he enrolled in the machinist program at Bellingham Technical School. He completed his apprenticeship at Skagit Steel, working there until 1979 when he began his long career at Shell Oil Refinery, starting first as a machinist and later a maintenance foreman. He retired in 2016 after 36 years.
David met his wife of nearly 45 years, Janie, at a very awkward blind dinner date set up by his aunt Doreen. A couple of months later, he called and asked Janie for a real date. They were married in December 1977. David has two daughters who remember him as a patient, selfless, gentle, and loving father with a great sense of humor. He was a constant presence and positive influence in their lives and encouraged them to “look on the bright side”. He was and will always be their hero and role-model.
David was a behind-the-scenes kind of guy. He was quietly content to use his spiritual gift of service to help wherever he was needed, on both large and small projects. David and Janie joined Emmanuel in 1997 and for many years, “Mr. Dave” served the little ones in Emmanuel’s toddler nursery. One summer many years ago, he took a week-long vacation to help at Vacation Bible School. He was a member of Emmanuel’s security team, where his presence on Wednesday nights was reassuring to both children and adults. David also served his community for 20 years as a firefighter in the Bay View Volunteer Fire Department and for a time as fire commissioner.
The outdoors was his favorite place. He loved hunting, fishing, and a good walk on a trail in God’s creation. After retirement, he loved to spend time outside in his garden and yard; but if a cruise or opportunity to travel called, he was ready to go. Travels with his family spanned Alaska, Mexico, Hawaii, and even South Korea, as well as many hunting and fishing trips with his brother and cousins.
Left to mourn his passing are his wife Janie, daughter Candace and her husband Blake, daughter Shelby and her son Kaidyn, sister Georgia and her husband Gene, several nieces and nephews, and many cousins and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Wesley.
His memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1515 East College Way, Mt. Vernon, WA, on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at 1:00 pm. Donations in his memory can be made to Emmanuel Baptist Children’s Ministries. 1 Peter 4:10  “Each one should use whatever gifts he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms.”

Are there any specific guidelines for writing an obituary for someone who was young or died suddenly?

In cases where someone has passed away suddenly or at a young age, it's especially important to approach the obituary with sensitivity and compassion. Focus on celebrating their life and achievements, rather than dwelling on the circumstances of their death.

What if I want to create a memorial website or page for my loved one?

There are many tools and platforms available that allow you to create a dedicated memorial website or page for your loved one. This can be a beautiful way to share memories and stories with others who knew them.

How do I ensure that my loved one's legacy lives on through their obituary?

A well-written obituary can help preserve your loved one's memory for years to come. Share it widely with friends, family, and community members, and consider creating a memorial website or page to continue celebrating their life.
