George J. Jace - July 01, 1931 - May 20, 2024

Departed: 05/20/2024 (Ashland)
Obituary Preview: George Julius Jace (nee Jocewicz) was born on July 1, 1931, and died peacefully with loved ones at his side, under the tender care of the staff at The Oaks in Washburn, WI, on May 20, 2024.
A product of the Greatest Generation, George was born in Ashland, Wisconsin, to Eva and Joe Jocewicz and graduated from Ashland High School, Class of 1949. He is preceded in death by his siblings Joe, Bill, Rose, Frank, Ellen, and Harry. George served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1954. George left for school in Miami, but always wondered about this one special Ashland girl named Mary Lewandowski. His heart brought him back to Ashland, where he and Mary were wed and remained so for over 62 wonderful years until her death in 2022. He and Mary built a happy home and family in Minnetonka, MN, for over 50 years before moving back to Ashland to be closer to family.
While in Minnetonka, George—ever the entrepreneur—started “Photo Quick,” a turnaround photo finishing shop that he built up for over 30 years.
Those who had the distinct and unforgettable honor of knowing George are today remembering one of the greatest of men, the kindest of grandfathers, the smartest of businessmen, the scrappiest of maple syrupers, the funniest of fathers, the deepest of pontificators, and the wittiest purveyor of culinary delights - most especially his hot, percolated coffee.
He is remembered by his surviving children Mary, Tina (Brian Miller), Tony (Theresa), and Annie (Eric Heipel) Jace as the wonderful father every child wanted. He cherished the growing family he created with his wife, Mary, and we know that George was always thinking ahead of the legacy he’d leave - seeds he’d plant in a garden he would never get to see. In the last 20 years of his life, George took great delight in and spent countless hours re-establishing his roots in Ashland and caretaking the land at The Inn at Timber Cove and surrounding grounds. To his 14 grandchildren, Eva (Colten Thewis) and Abby Miller, John (Sarah), Tony, Katie, and Olivia Bretzman, Clara (Ennio Piano), Adam, Anna, and Samuel Jace, and Edie (Joe Guy), Penny, Mary and Charlie Heipel - he will be remembered as the man we always looked up to, longed to see, and loved to hug. We’re convinced he coined the phrases “Pshaw!” and “You’re an angel, angel.” But most of all, we admire the legacy of faith he passed down to us and of which he was the paragon, as shown in 1 Timothy 2:2: “ that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”
His great-grandchildren George, Clifford and Byron Thewis, Breckyn and Beau Bretzman, Marialaura Piano, and two others arriving soon—will hear us talking of Biggie Grandpa George for years to come.
George was a true patriarch, and together with Mary, he created an eternal legacy of a family that was blessed and highly favored. He loved us unconditionally - so much so that he may not have ever realized the person we all aspired to be was always him.
